What formats do all you writers around here use?

Personally, I write by hand mostly, then type it up in notepad.

I type everything in word, and try to edit it there before I post it here. But I usually wind up having to edit some more after it's here.

I'm probably going to switch to word at some point, though I'll probably stick with plain text. Trouble is, I've been doing all my formating by hand (to fit with submitting in txt format) so I'm not sure how to undo all that.

I don't think the format makes any difference at all.. Nor does the computer, nor the typing skill.
An obsever of my photography " Boy! you must have an expensive camera"
My reply, "Well no, but Hemingway did not have a word proccesor either"
MY advice: Write in what ever way you can put your ideas in record the quickest. First draft, forget spelling and grammar, just get the idea down..
Then go back and polish the idea, then go back and spell and do the grammar bit.. (also edit out the trash, extra words)
My sister edits all my non-fiction, (she is in Calif, I an in GA. ) and we work with two different systems, plus editing the text on an email.. I use Word Perfect, and she uses Microsoft Word.. and I am sure there are several more that would work as well.. But it must have spell check what ever it is... Ha

depends on where I am. If I am away from the computer, then it's what everp paper I have there. If I am at my computer, then it's one of my 3 writing programs.

No wonder you don't have enough stories posted, Ashley Barbie! Sweetie, a really good story today is better than a perfect story next week. So get to work and let's see it!

Seriously, I totally understand your post. Every time I read something of mine, I want to tinker with it. It never stops.

I write using Microsoft Word, 8 pt font (small, yes, but it works for me).

As far as the actual writing, I usually write the first draft with very little interference. I don't usually work with outlines unless the story is really complex from a structural standpoint. 3,000 words a day, every day until it is finished. After I spend a few weeks away from the story, I go through the raw production track, look for basic parts that need to be fixed as well as elements that work and ones that don't. Once that happens, I write a clean second draft and then a polish.

And then buff, another coat of wax, buff again, lather, rinse and repeat.

Let me state up front that I stole this. But it works for me now and has for almost twenty years.

I just write. If I do not know the capital of Stanistan, I just type cleveland and keep on banging away. Writing is hard, it hurts, sometimes it feels like giving birth through my fingertips. I hate it 90% of the time. So when it is working, I just try to get the hell out of the way.

I take my time once I am done. I'll go back through pretty quickly and knock off the high points. Then I'll leave it for a day or so, rinse and repeat. I try to read it through and edit three times over a week or so before I post it. It does not always work that way (I knocked 'Tina' out from start to finish in 2 hours), but Thats my goal.

Keep writing.
