A good story for me has to be descriptive. A good writer can make you feel like you're actually there. You can see in your mind what's happening & smell, taste, & feel what the characters do.

The writer should have knowledge of the genre they are writing about so that it doesn't come off as ridiculous to someone who is.

Correct grammar is important. Makes the story flow smoothly. I don't know anyone who likes to read the same few lines over to understand what the writer is trying to say.

That's all I can think of at the moment. Hope it's helpful.

That's a good question, Mike, I am sure your are going to get a lot of answers.
Rain's advice seems sound to me. I like stories that have at least a little originality. Good luck, and write well.

I like stories that have a good story, I hate stories that are sex for sex sake. I want there to be a reason that they are fucking like rabid bunnies, I really like it if it's the first time they got together and one was madly in love... I love sentimental crap.

Proof reading and taking your time helps with the mechanics. Not being boring helps with the ratings. Most readers are here looking for something specific so you need to now your niche.

A few things actually: Writing skills, originality and continuity if its a series of a short stories. You need to have good writing skills (e.g. spelling, grammer, vocab, paragraphing), a good sense of originality (something that sets your story apart from everyone else e.g. writing style, storyline, etc.). Continuity comes by only when writing a series, a set of stories that develop with each chapter without it being all over the place. If you can make it all make sense instead of random, you've satisfied the continuity issue.

Practice makes perfect. Keep writing and everything will click soon enough. :D

Hi Mike.. Thought I'd stick my two-penniesworth in here..

When I write a chapter of a story, I always have the first sentance of the next in my head..

Don't finish stories leaving loose ends. There has got to be a finish, to a chapter, a paragraph and even a sentance..

Try not to repeat yourself too often in a chapter.. limit the amount of time you use names/descriptions of things.. ie 'He wandered away from the crowd hearing a voice calling his name from around the corner. He turned back to survey the crowd again, wondering, fleetingly, if he should tell the crowd he was going...' I am use a thesauraus all the time when writing, my trusty companion..!!

Having only written the one story on here, I have to echo Sibboh's advice above. You need to have an idea of what story you want to tell, where it is going and where it will finish. You can pad out all the middle bits once you know what you want to say.

Mine was a bit different as mine was down to actual events, but if you are creating something entirely from fiction I would get an idea of what you want to say, how you want to start and how you'd like to finish, and go from there.

Good luck.

If anyone here can tell you what to do to make a succsessful story, then
they are probably making a living at it already.

The only thing you will learn here is what NOT to do.... but thats half the
battle isint it??

Learn how to discribe the working parts of sex, without using the same
works OVER and OVER and OVER and OVER and OVER !

I think the best stories here somehow engaged my emotions rather than
JUST my nethers!

Looking forward to reading yours!

Ps.(Im no pro, so take it for what its worth)

At it's lowest level you merely need an idea and spellcheck. But if you want to write something that people will enjoy reading you need a few more things.

I personally like to have a few solid ideas for what I want to do ahead of time and then fill in the gaps between them as I go along. You need time and patience, sometimes I'm lucky if I get a paragraph down in a night, other times I can get pages done, so be patient. And always in the back of your mind be thinking about what you can do next. Write something that you would want to read and something that makes you happy.

These are just a few things but really just don't limit yourself and use spellcheck.
