Well, I'm really into anthroponymy so I'm going to say that Son of Sam refers to the name Sampson, which is a first name derived from the English surname of the same name, meaning "Son of Sam". It's not as popular as other "son" names, such as Jackson or Mackenzie.

Perhaps the most beautiful theory ever devised by man from one of the world's most brilliant minds, Professor Albert Einstein.

A theory of physics it is actually separated in 2. Special and General Relativity. They explain the laws of gravity into more detailed forms.

Special Relativity concerns spacetime. broken down further:

the laws of physics are the same for observers moving at the same time and pace.

the speed of time is constant and insurmountable

General Relativity talks about the effects of gravitational fields. they bend light....the greater the gravitational field the slower the speed of time!!!! (wrap your head around that) gravitational forces are affected by speed of the observer.

The Knights Templar were the most powerful order of the 'holy knights' that were created after the success of the First Crusade. Their primary mission was to defend the Christian pilgrims on their way to Jerusalem, and after that, defense of the Kingdom of Jerusalem. The Knights also created Europe's first banking system. Sadly the wealth they gathered made them a target of European kings, and in the mid (or was it late?) 13th century, almost all the knights were imprisoned for life or executed by the king of France on false heresy and blasphemy charges, and their assets seized.

Jule
06-29-2009, 05:23 PM
From the British point of view:
The Bubonic Plague is also knows as black death. It spread across the world, starting from East Asia, and reached England in June 1348, Scotland in 1350.
Within one year, one-third of the population of England and Wales were dead. By 1350, only 2.5 m people were left in England.
If you survived the Bubonic Plague, you experienced positiv effects. The Plague had created a labor shortage and a corresponding rise in wages.Serfdom disappeared as employers competed for scarce workers (law of supply and demand). Houses were built in stone rather than wood, glass windows were used. A bit like the economic miracle in post war Germany.
The nobles did not like the new-found prosperity of the poor, so they introduced a poll tax which later led to the Peasant's Revolt (1381)

The last of the Sioux Indians had decided to give up and be escorted by the US army to the Indian refuge in Nebraska. they were to have met at Wounded Knee Creek in North Dakota and be disarmed. For some reason this already tense situation exploded into a pointless battle because of miscommunication and hundreds of people died.

Wow, cool coincidence

The Prostestant Reformation and Martin Luther are inextricably linked after all, he initiated it.

Martin Luther was a German Monk we spoke out against the Catholic Church. His main qualm had to do with the Catholic's practice of accepting money for the forgiveness of sins. Martin Luther thought this to be unjust and against the true teachings of Jesus. He said that any baptized Christian who confesses and begs forgiveness for his sins should be redeemed... among other differences. He penned the 95 theses document where he spoke out against the papacy and the church and distributed it around Europe. he had to go into hiding. his teachings inspired both the peasant war and the Protestant Reformation. A very bold man for the times.

Cinderella is French for "little ashes" and is the name of a fairy tale character who lives with her horrible stepmother and stepsisters, ends up going to a ball with a pumpkin coach, losing a glass slipper, meeting Prince Charming, and living happily ever after. At least in the happy version.

btw, what else was I supposed to day about anglepoise lamps? that they are art deco style and very popular lamps with a unique design and flexible neck? that they are collector pieces and can perform the duties of both light provision and decoration?

wtf is your obsession with these bloody lamps?

Julius Caesar

Possibly the most popular and recognized Emperor of Rome. A very flamboyant man who seized many new lands for the empire. The first emperor to have his bust on a Roman coin. He was assassinated by the Senators of his own court.

Ghengis Khan

Ghengis Khan - son of khan of the Wolves - a Mongol tribe. Second son - according to legend (or the book I'm reading) he killed his older brother after his father died and his first bondsman declared himself khan of the tribe and left the mother, four sons and baby daughter to die in the North (of whatever country it is he lived in). He brought together to Mongol nation, all the tribes fighting the Tartar army under one banner, and totally decimating their number. He took in wanderers, banished from family tribes and turned the men into warriors, and gave their families security within his tribe. I'm waiting for someone to finish the second book - and I might update then!! *grin*

Ghengis was a tribal warrior - the story I'm reading, kind of a biography of sorts is totally brill!! I've nearly finished the first book, which takes you up to when he was eighteen - and commanded the largest fighting tribal army in the history of the Mongol Nation!! He was fearless and I think I've got a crush on a dead man

Merlin - magician in the legend of King Arthur and the knights of the round table. He was probably based on a magic man, who cured ailments by using local knowledge of herbs - and he may also have been an astrologer, reading the future using the position of stars etc. He had a white beard, and of course wore a dress with stars and moons on - Oh!! And a pointy wizards hat and he would have drunk ale by the flagon!!

P.S I notice that everyone forgot to mention that Ghengis Khan and the Mongols had the largest empire (by shear conquered land mass)in the history of the world. they came right up to the doorstep of Europe after hacking and slashing their way across the almost the entire continent of Asia.

He was probably the greatest conqueror ever born.

Uncle Sam was the nickname of a man who worked as a quartermaster in the US army. Since goods were stamped property of US, he was jokingly accused of claiming everything for himself, Uncle Sam. The cartoon Uncle Sam was, I believe, first drawn by Thomas Nast, who is also responsible for the appearance of Santa Claus.

One of my fave books. It follows the Mutiny on the Bounty. It's about the trials and tribulations of the 18 men, including Captain Bligh who were cast a sea on small boat and left to fend for themselves. I think some survived for 3 months before being rescued. they ate everything from sea gulls to raw turtle flesh to survive. in the end they had no choice but to resort to cannibalism. a fantastic and gripping read.
