Leda and the Swan is a story and subject in art from Greek mythology in which the god Zeus, in the form of a swan, seduces or rapes Leda. According to later Greek mythology, Leda bore Helen and Polydeuces, children of Zeus, while at the same time bearing Castor and Clytemnestra, children of her husband Tyndareus, the King of Sparta. In the W. B. Yeats version, it is subtly suggested that Clytemnestra, although being the daughter of Tyndareus, has somehow been traumatized by what the swan has done to her mother (see below). According to many versions of the story, Zeus took the form of a swan and raped or seduced Leda on the same night she slept with her husband King Tyndareus. In some versions, she laid two eggs from which the children hatched.[1] In other versions, Helen is a daughter of Nemesis, the goddess who personified the disaster that awaited those suffering from the pride of Hubris. The Pequot and their traditional enemies, the Mohegan, were at one time a single sociopolitical entity. Anthropologists and historians contend that sometime before contact with the Puritan English, they split into the two competing groups.[5] The earliest historians of the Pequot War speculated that the Pequot migrated from the upper Hudson River Valley toward central and eastern Connecticut sometime around 1500. The Dutch and the English, from Western Europe, across the Atlantic Ocean, were also striving to extend the reach of their trade into the interior to achieve dominance in the lush, fertile region. The colonies were new at the time, the original settlements having been founded in the 1620s. By 1636, the Dutch had fortified their trading post, and the English had built a trading fort at Saybrook. English Puritans from Massachusetts Bay and Plymouth colonies settled at the then four recently established river towns of Windsor (1632,) Wethersfield (1633,), Hartford (1635) and Springfield (1636.)

 

I left the Pacific NW and moved to New Mexico for over 3 years. The Navajoes are the largest tribe in the SW with a land base in Arizona crossing into New Mexico. They have their own language, police, courts, and local government. They were used in WWII against Japan as " code talkers ". The language of NM is old Spanish. The nonnative population mostly are descendants of the Spanish settlers of the 1500's.

 

Pumpkin Pie.... I had me some pumpkin pie yesterday. I guess there was some miscommunication. We brought two big pumpkin pies, and of course so did everybody else. Then to top it off, our daughter also made two of them along with the main meal.

Thanks, My wife and I had a wonderful feast, she is a great cook, and I help out when I can. Thanksgiving isn't really about Pilgrims and Indians. Hell it wasn't even celebrated for many many years. It is a time for realizing how fortunate most of us are. We do not have any children, so for years the wife and I have had bachelors and a few bachelorettes over for the feast. When we were younger we once hosted over twenty five people. Those that could brought food and everyone helped with the dishes. The next day most of us went to the rifle/pistol range and left momma home alone, which she claims is her favorite part of the whole deal. A clean house and plenty of leftovers. Hope the best for all in the coming year.
