B.C. man recounts shocking moment when sea lion snatched girl

A young girl appears to be unharmed after she was suddenly snatched by a sea lion and pulled into the water in Richmond, B.C.

Local resident Michael Fujiwara managed to capture the incident on video footage that has already been viewed online more than two million times.

Fujiwara tells CTV News Channel that he was recording the sea lion when a group of people, including a young girl in a dress, arrived and started feeding it bread crumbs.

“All of a sudden, the sea lion jumped up, grabbed her by the waist and just dragged her down into the water,” he says.

A man who Fujiwara believes is the girl’s grandfather immediately jumped into the water and rescued her.

Fujiwara says he tried talking to the people, but they seemed eager to “move away from the area as soon as possible.”

Fujiwara says the girl, who looked about five or six, seemed unharmed.

“She wasn’t crying or anything,” he said. “She was really shaken up though.”

Fujiwara says sea lions are a common sight in the area, adding “I do not want to get near one anymore.”

    Signs warn against feeding

Robert Kiesman, chair of the Steveston Harbour Authority, says there are signs warning about the dangers of feeding the animals.

Kiesman says his staff regularly see this type of “mindless behaviour” and he hopes the video will educate the public about the risks.

He says it is illegal under federal law to feed marine mammals.

“We’re not SeaWorld here,” Kiesman adds. “They shouldn’t be doing this.”

On a somewhat related topic I watched a report about a 40 foot sperm whale that was stranded in a dock over the weekend until rescuers played underwater whale sounds to guide the whale back into open water ...

I saw that last night. In the brief video clip I saw, the little girl was sitting down on the edge of the dock with her back to the water when the seal jumped up, grabbed her by the clothes and pulled her backwards into the water. I didn't see her feeding them.
It was frightening though, poor little girl. I'm glad she's okay.

    "Sea Lion" not Seal lol.

But ya that Gorilla thing was even more scary and tragic that they put it down. The new exhibit is reopening though more safe.

It's not the worst idea I have heard, have you seen all of the shark stories lately of them coming right to shorelines full of swimmers. All of these laws protecting sea wildlife is allowing them to grow in numbers and get more brave as they come into what is now "human territory" ...

A South African big game hunter died after being crushed by an elephant cow that had been shot on a game reserve in Zimbabwe at the weekend. Bad news, good news.

You made a couple really important observations here. One being the Sea Lion grabbed her by the clothes but did not actually bite her. And that was no accident. Even with wild animals as huge as that Sea Lion their jaws and bite are precise enough to bite thin cloth without biting actual flesh.

But your crucial observation is that those people were not feeding the Sea Lions. The problem, however is lots of other people do feed the Sea Lions there, and this Sea Lion became frustrated that he wasn't g3etting fed and his dragging the girl into the water was simply his way of saying hey you better feed me.

And that is always the problem when humans feed wild animals. They get habituated to it and expect it. But they always wild animals not pets and remain dangerous.

Poetic justice at its best. And this is the second one I have heard about lately. It wasn't too long ago another big game hunter in Africa got killed and I think eaten by a Crocodile.

And who knows maybe someday Karma will also catch up to Eric and Donald Trump JR. when they are hunting in Africa which they have done often in the past. But probably not now that they are under Secret Service protection. How could the Secret Service protect them from falling elephants and hungry crocidles?

You may have seen something different but it was a piece of bread in the water from a tourist that first alerted the sea lion as it came toward the dock to scoop it up.

The sea lion then motioned toward the child while she was looking in the water and it snapped at her outstretched hand after that they all started laughing and then when she sat with her back to the mammal it did the grabbing part and it was more playful than vicious as it could have cut her in half had it wanted.

Not a observation as you called it but an actual feeding and attack.

You are correct but there is no blame to be put on the kid as she is exactly that, a young kid that doesn't know better. The fault lies with the parents and other adults in the area that thought it was funny to feed a wild mammal right under a do not feed wildlife sign ...

You could very well be right. I have not watched the entire video and only saw and heard what was on the news. And the parent's claim they were not feeding the Sea Lion. But that is something they just might not have wanted to admit.

Somebody was feeding it. It's early in the full video. They don't call them Sea LIONS for nothing.

The "hero" that jumped in to save the kid said that they WERE feeding it as did others in attendence and you can see the sea lion gobble up the bread before looking right into the kid's eyes.

It boggles my mind how many times we see people stop their cars on the highway and say "Oh look at the cute bears" and other wildlife as they start getting out of their vehicles to approach them. What kind of dummy thinks Winnie the Pooh is real LOL ??? Those are probably the same people that roll down their windows while driving through a wildlife park in Africa, full of lions and other "cuddly" creatures ...

Was a lucky bit of camera work.
Actually quite hilarious once you'd seen it all and the girl unharmed
    Grandpa was the hero.

    Stupid humans

There's never been a shortage of sharks in close proximity to humans.
but there's rather more humans in their water ,
    with rather better observational abilities.

In our harbour we used to swim all the time , never worried about sharks at all.
(Attacks very rare , none known in this area)
Yet riding round , for mustering , it was very common to see large sharks cruising in the harbour , 12 - 15 footers , including hammerheads.
Also often saw them when commuting in dinghy's

One day the old man and I looked down into a shallow corner of a long white beach , less than half a mile from the houses ,
white sand , crystal clear waters ,
And there were 165 grown sharks basking in water from nothing to about 10 feet deep.
    Amazing.
just very lucky timing , but heard has been observed again more recently

Commercial fishing , we see them all the time , in close in waters , and hook all sorts .
    Bronzies , blues , mako , tigers , hammerhead , threashers , white pointers , black tips , you name it ,
    we often don't know ,
just cut the trace n let em go..
Or aboard , over the side as quick as possible , specially tigers.
They is meanest mothers on deck.
    Carpets the funniest.
    7gill the most placid

I should have said off the east coast of the USA as there are videos every day now of more and more sharks encroaching on beaches. I could see how in Oz and NZL it is normal.

I remember swimming up to a wire netting (barrier) set up on a beach there once years ago that they use to keep the sharks at bay ... That might have just been a private beach thing though and don't know if that is common there ???

I usually dive on the side the sharks are lol. Only ever seen one in front of me and it was not a big one thank christ.
