but the fact that the father was "trying to scare" the kid should tell authorities that that person is irresponsible and should not have kids or firearms
No doubt that the father is an idiot, but unfortunately competency test are not issued before insemination is permitted.

When I was a kid, the Daisy BB gun was out of reach for my parents, as were the Crossman pellet guns (which were rifled), so my dad bought me a .22 single shot Stevens rifle, with a peep-sight, that I used for years as a varmint hunting with my older brothers. We got enough per Woodchuck pelt from dairy farmers and the taxidermist, to pay for our ammo, with a little left over.

Adult Charged After 4-Year-Old Girl Accidentally Shot By 2-Year-Old Brother

A 4-year-old girl was reportedly shot in the foot on Monday by her 2-year-old brother who found a gun under the couch in the living room of their Memphis, Tenn. home. The boyfriend of the children's mother has been arrested and charged with child abuse and neglect and reckless endangerment with a deadly weapon, WMC-TV reported.

The children were playing with the gun, which was left under the couch by the boyfriend, Charles Sanders, according to the station.

Sergeant Mickey Keaton of the Shelby County Sheriff's Office told the television station that the young girl "wasn't severely hurt, so we're thankful for that."

Keaton suggested the use of gun locks and secure storage to prevent such accidents.

"They're your children," Keaton said. "It's up to you to keep them safe."

89-Year-Old Florida War Vet Stands His Ground

The decorated World War II veteran and jeweler shot a would-be robber six times.

The 89-year-old man behind the counter at Lake Park’s The Jewelry Exchange might have looked like an easy mark, but a would-be robber found out Saturday he’s anything but.

When an armed robber came into the store around 3 p.m., Arthur M. Lewis was up to the challenge. The jeweler grabbed his attacker’s gun and pulled out his own, the Palm Beach Post reported. The two wrestled for a bit, firing shots at each other, but when the smoke cleared it was the robber on the ground with four shots to the chest and two other bullet wounds.

Lewis, the paper reported, was grazed by a bullet on his arm, but was otherwise OK.

Although hit, the robber was able to get up and flee the store, prompting a manhunt, according to the Sun-Sentinel.

The man was eventually caught when his getaway driver sought help from the Boca Raton Police Department in getting him to a hospital for treatment.

The would-be robber was taken to Delray Medical Center. The driver, Raven Simone Hill, 23, was booked into jail on a charge of armed robbery for driving the getaway car, the Post reported.

That robber has been identified as Lennard Patrick Jarvis, 44. He faces felony charges once he’s released from the hospital.

Lewis, an army vet who served in the Pacific Theatre, isn’t the only Floridian to stand his ground recently. On Sunday, Melchisedec Williams, 50, of Tampa shot an armed teen who broke into his Tampa home. The intruder turned out to be Williams’ own nephew. The teen, armed with a knife, failed to identify himself to the legally blind man, who was in fear for his safety, Tampa police said.

Check out the Palm Beach Post’s full story on Lewis.

Crewmember On TV's 'COPS' Shot Dead By Police While Filming

Police shot and killed a crewmember of the show "COPS" who was filming an attempted robbery on Tuesday night, according to Omaha police.

Sound technician Bryce Dion was killed by "friendly fire" by police responding to a local Wendy's, police chief Todd Schmaderer said in a press conference Wednesday.

The robbery suspect -- later revealed to have been wielding an airsoft rifle, a type of recreational gun that fires non-lethal plastic pellets -- was also shot and killed by police fire.

"COPS" had been filming in Omaha since June. Dion and the show's cameraman were embedded with the police unit and followed the officers at the scene Tuesday night, according to police.

Schmaderer said the "very dramatic video" captured by the show's crew will serve as evidence in the investigation of the officers involved in Dion's shooting.

"The video footage was recovered and is evidence in the investigation," Schmaderer said.

He added that in his view, the "COPS" footage justified the officers' conduct on the scene.

"Based on our viewing of the footage, the officers had no choice but to respond in the way they did," Schmaderer said.

Mother of boy who brought gun to school sentenced

PORT ORCHARD, Wash. (AP) — The mother of a Washington state boy who brought a gun to school that went off in his backpack and critically wounded a classmate will spend more than a year behind bars.

Jamie Lee Chaffin was sentenced to 14 months Friday in Kitsap County Superior Court. She initially faced third-degree assault charges but was eventually prosecuted for unlawful possession of a firearm. She was convicted of forgery in 2007 and barred from owning or accessing weapons.

In February 2012, the gun that Chaffin's 9-year-old son brought to the city of Bremerton elementary school fired inside his backpack, injuring 8-year-old Amina Kocer Bowman. She had multiple surgeries and spent more than a month in the hospital.

The boy told investigators he took the gun from a dresser at the home of his mother's boyfriend, Douglas Bauer, because he was afraid of other students. Chaffin did not have custody of her son, who lived with his uncle.

The boy and his siblings testified that there were other firearms in Bauer's home that were not locked away.

Chaffin agreed in 2012 to testify against Bauer in exchange for the assault charge being dropped. She also agreed to plead guilty to unlawful possession of a gun, but her sentencing was postponed while Bauer's case wound through the courts. Her punishment moved forward after the state Supreme Court ruled in July that the third-degree assault case against Bauer could not proceed.

Bauer watched Chaffin's sentencing Friday. Her attorney, Michael Clark, sought less than the 14 months recommended by prosecutors, saying she could not care for herself and was dependent on Bauer, leaving her with few options despite knowing guns were in the house. But Judge Leila Mills imposed the full year and two months.

"I'm not finding there's anything to justify or excuse this behavior," Mills said. "You were under orders not to have a firearm. It was a direct violation."

Chaffin declined to make a statement in court, saying, "I'm not very good at speaking out loud with this many people around."

Neither her attorney nor Bauer offered additional comment outside the courtroom.

Earlier this month, the Bremerton School District agreed to pay $900,000 to the family of the injured girl. Bauer's homeowner's insurance said it would pay an additional $300,000 in the legal settlement.
