Default Molenaar dramatisation

http://www.hawkesbaytoday.co.nz/news/19siegetv/1420873/

i have just finished watching the molenaar dramatisation on tvnzondemand and i was laughing throughout most of it. my favourite part was the crux of the entire situation when the police were getting shot at nearer the beginning, make of that about my character what you will.

i was thinking though, what purpose does this screening have? was it educational at all? was this really meant to be entertaining? how did tvnz get access to the same home where the gunman molenaar made out his shooting? someone or a family must have made a tidy sum of money from tvnz to allow filming in what appears to be the same house and property.

did any other new zealanders here watch it either online or on television?

for the non-new zealanders, jan (sic?) molenaar was a man who killed one or two police officers after a search warrant was executed in his home in a city called napier on the east coast of the north island in the autumn/winter of 2009. i had just bought my first xbox 360 around that time!

Well as a Napier resident and someone who was nearby when the shootings happened I don't see much to laugh about. I bet the family of Const Snee (sp) also don't see much to laugh about either.
I haven't seen said show but from what I have read of the intentions of the makers, it was intended as an educational / informative piece covering various aspects of how / why the siege occurred, how Jan got hold of the firearms he used, and more importantly ( to me ) the effect it has had not only on the local community but nationwide as well.

I also feel I should point out that it was known by the police and wider community that J. Molenaar had serious issues mentally and that very little was done about it ( Either to help him or avoid trouble community wise ).

but didn't most of us already know? i watched it almost entirely except the end as i didn't have time and i had to do something else. i think it was almost an accurate re-creation except len snee was neither maori or polynesian. plus there were other little things throughout that were never said and could have never happened as well during the re-enactment, just silly.

That is called dramatic license and happens all the time in recreations. Usually they make up what happens/said behind closed doors. They also combine minor characters into one to insure that things are continuous, etc.

Here in NZ I'd say a large portion of the population would yes, but Remember that this show is also intended for a much wider audience than just us kiwi's and outside of NZ probably didn't anywhere near as much background information as was shown here.

i read on the tvnzondemand website in the shows description (but what happened to be a more brief description about molenaar) that he hated the mongrel mob and in the re-enactment he is riding a motorcycle dressed in such a way that suggests he is a gang member himself. this was one thing that wasn't made clear; if molenaar was in a gang himself, which? certainly whether any hate for the mongrel mob wasn't a motivation for what he did? is it even true? maybe he was part of the mob all along? why is that even important anyway?

i also looked up the house on google maps before i watched the show and it has pictured a black nineties bmw parked outside the house.
