I just found out that the rating system in the forums prevents double submissions (or changing your choice for numbers of stars); is a similar procedure in place on the story site?

Yes. You can only vote once per story and can't change your vote once it is cast.

In past voting, many forum regulars held their votes to the very end. Some to see which way the voting wind was blowing... some to vote for the front-running story and some to vote against it. Some missed their chance to vote by waiting too long (and said so).

With this anonymous voting there is really no reason to wait. Just read the stories and cast your vote.

I put in a vote for Wee Hector's "The Girl in the Photograph", as I thought it had a mature, well-realized narrative voice and an appealing ambiguity about what sort of story it wants to be. There were other good stories to consider, but I made my decision based on which one I thought was most au courant.

What I meant by ambiguity was that the story is a bit of a tease about what sort of story it wants to be; the way it sets itself up it could be a ghost story, a tragic romance, a story about social alienation, or even a psychological profile. It could be an example of magical realism, or it could just be a story about point of view. The resolution refuses to cop to one explanation or another, and so it ends up rather nuanced in its particular way. I had criticisms of it too, which I mentioned when I commented on it, but I no story is perfect. Except "Yertle the Turtle".

Well here we are in the finishing straight. The result is 24 hours away and the tension is hotting up. Great idea to keep the voting secret as several voters have announced their choice on here, while others may have Pm'd the writer but I would reckon the majority of voters have kept it secret.

Normally, any of the entries would have been virtually guaranteed a place in the top three but this time we have a reduced field of the highest class. Whoever wins this CAW will certainly be well worthy of their victory. Who will win? I don't know but I would not be surprised if someone totally unexpected comes out on top.

I think it is counted as bad luck to wish someone well in the theatre so to all those who have taken part "Break a leg!"

I voted. I always have a tough time with this process, reading everything, rejecting some entries pretty easily, and whittling away at my list until there's one clear winner. This time, not one story fell out of competition easily. Not one. As Wee Hector says, every entry in CAW #11 would have gotten a podium finish in most of the other CAWs.

Narrowing it down to four took a lot of soul-searching, and finally, I made my decision. I'm glad I don't have a clear picture of how any of the stories are doing, other than the posts on here and a few PMs. Hell, most other types of voting are secret, whether it's for fourth grade class president or President of the United States. I, for one, like the fact that CAW voting is secret this time.

About breaking a leg -- this place is theater, isn't it? Sometimes, it's a XXX-rated movie house, sometimes it's a soap opera, sometimes it's theater of the absurd, but the theater analogy is a good one.

I'll bring a box of Sharpie markers to the awards ceremony for those who want to sign casts.

Hey, CAW SOP! Since all sixteen of us will be at the awards ceremony, we should know the dress code. Black tie? Office? Dressy casual? Clothing optional?

I too just wanted to tell everyone "Break a leg!" I agree with everyone who has said that this CAW has had some of the best written stories I've read on this site so far. It was an honor to submit my writing among some of the most talented people here!

As in all things only one can come out the top winner but I think everyone brave enough to put themselves out there won something else too, they won respect. When starting out as a writer the best thing you can hear is someone tell you they like your work, it can make all the difference in deciding to continue writing or not.

This is actually a surprise win, not because there's anything wrong with the story, but simply because, judging by the comments of those who actually stated who they were voting for, I thought several other stories had the advantage.

I'm glad that the prize goes to the author who put in the extra effort to not just write a great sex story, but to focus on the presentation too.

Let that be a lesson to us all. Hard work pays off.

As DC said, you obviously put a lot of work into the presentation of this story, but I still maintain that it was a strong contender because of the text and the story, rather than the presentation.

Did your forum presentation help? Of course! But it was the story that earned the votes.







Hmmm. Horse wins with an illustrated story in a Challenge with a picture for a theme. Does that mean I'll have to perform music to win if you choose a song for the theme of CAW #12? I'm doomed!

@ ejls -- Thank you for hosting a brilliant challenge. The changes you (CAW SOP) brought to the voting procedures kept this a fair and honest challenge, free from most of the bullshit that has surrounded recent CAW events, and the theme you chose inspired fifteen great stories. And mine.

Interestingly, with all the talk about the hidden writing on the picture, no one focused on that in their story. Does anyone have any idea what it says?

Horse may be the best, but to me, all the other writers also won by being in one of the best CAW's yet. It was .hard. for me to pick a winner out of this fine collection of liturature. Despite some of the criticisms that some of the stories did not have enough sex, the emotions and desires came through in the writing.
