Help! I was all set to buy a Kindle and now Microsoft announces a partnership with Barnes & Noble, regarding the Nook. Most important - if you own a Nook is there a way to buy Amazon books for it?

As you know, I use the Sony Reader. As far as I've been able to determine; all of these ereaders are proprietary. Nook for Barnes & Noble, Kindle for Amazon, Sony for Sony (but the Sony, while somewhat limited in available ebooks, can read MS Word files as well as pdf's). For available books, Amazon is the winner, but I still love my Sony.

Amazon (bookstore) = Kindle (e-reader) = Mobi (ebook format)

If you buy a Kindle, you cannot use it to read books from other bookstores. Likewise, you can't read books you bought from Amazon on other readers.

Sony and Barnes & Noble both use the Epub format, but they use incompatible digital rights management schemes, so for instance you can't read a book you purchased from B&N on a Sony reader.

DRM-free books can be found from various sources, some free (e.g. Project Gutenberg), some not free (e.g. Baen), some not exactly legal (I'm talking piracy). But for most books you will have to choose your bookstore and understand that you will NEVER be able to transfer those books to any other device except the one associated with that store. In other words, you're stuck with your choice forever, unless you want to buy your entire library over again later.

Honestly, buying an ebook reader is nearly as big a decision as buying a house. I know, I know, I'm being cynical.

There are ways around the limitation, but it involves using special software to strip out the DRM, which I won't discuss here. If you're interested, you'll have to do your own research. And you didn't hear it from me.

On a more positive note (and since I'm in such a shameless mood), on that other site where I've uploaded my stories, I've included both Mobi and Epub versions, all DRM-free. So if you're interested, you can read them on pretty much any ebook reader on the market.

Probably not a contender in the price range of these others would be the iPad. Though I have only bought books through the Apple store, it's my understanding that there are apps for amazon and for the other available, probably free, that allow you to buy books from either/any. iPad is obvious more expensive, but then again, it is far more than a reader. I have two.

Yep, iPad apps can make it pretty universal, but the big booksellers keep introducing things to "encourage" you to buy their books (by making other things more difficult). Most libraries have e-books that can be downloaded to nearly any format, but, again, Amazon and others are trying to make it difficult (at the same time they're selling libraries these e-books) because they can charge a bundle for individual sales (someone said yesterday the 50 Shades of Grey e-book is up to $50!)

I'm no closer to a decision. I don't think I would utilize an iPad to it's fullest extent. I use a computer all day at work and have a laptop and desktop computer. I don't even want internet on my cell phone.

Microsoft just announced a partnership with B&N Nook. A small group I've participated with is planning on publishing a Halloween book for ages 14 and up on Amazon. I would really like a copy of that book, to proof I am part of a published entity but the Microsoft/B&N partnership is sort of drawing me in.

OMG I use the net on my phone at least twice daily, during my epic 90+ minute commute to and from work.

Along with having a quick peek on here and another forum, I also catch up on the days world news, as well as my friends via Twitter & FB etc.

Each to their own, but I am addicted to mobile 'net - it fills in some of the three hours I spend each day on buses.

Incompatible formats, insane prices, intrusive DRM, vendor lock-in, and they wonder why some people just prefer to pirate.

Not that I'm encouraging piracy. I'm totally against it. So what if the companies refuse to sell media unless it only works on one device that will be obsolete in five years? Don't you know that every time you pirate, you're taking money away from a CEO that would otherwise help them purchase a new mansion every three months? I mean, it's hard work thinking up new ways to keep their customers from enjoying their products. After a long day of suing grandmothers and buying politicians, don't they deserve to go home to a nice new ten-million-dollar house?

And let's not forget about the CEO's kids. If too many people pirate, little Johnny might not be able to live off the interest from his trust fund anymore. He might even have to go out and get a job, or worse, go without the coke and hookers! He's only twenty-two! What kind of a monster would have a little kid like that thrown out in the street to fend for himself? Won't somebody please think of the children?

I've had an old friend staying with me for a while - it's been lovely having her here, we've been having fun drinking wine, giggling and reminicing about 'the old days' but it's also nice now that she's gone back to the land of pork scratchings, curries, orange chips & Richief

So it's back to XnXX for me (Hi y'all!) and from tomorrow back to writing my CAW!

We aren't particularily good at 'Fast Food' in this country, so many other nations do it so much easier and better than us (and I speak as one who has worked for nearly twenty years, most of which was in catering).

However, our ethnic restaurants and takeaways are (mostly) of a high standard, especially the Indian ones.
It may well be due to our historic cultural and political links to those countries, with the former British Empire and latterly The Commonwealth.



As far as the compy goes, I have suddenly realised that the deadline is looming in the middle distance, and I have an awful lot of work to do.
After tonight I shall put down the Chardonnay and get stuck in to typing up all my ideas....

By knowing in my head who my characters are I know how they like to make love, I write by that. I don't know if that helps at all. One of my favorite authors on this site once said spend a paragraph describing each action your making. I don't know if that helps either.

That's good. there are too many people who like to bring people down and tell them how to write their stories. I personally like the ones that have a lot of story to them. Just because it's as sex site or sex story doesn't mean it has to be wall to wall sex. For example I love the story "Game of Inches" it is pages of stoy with paragraphs of sex in most instalments. I think it's a brilliant story and I'm glad to see he didn't let the negative people out there convince him it needed more sex.

I think that is a good idea. The story is the important part. I find myself making the characters first and let them tell me where the story goes. If sex happens okay but sometimes getting to the sex interferes with the story. You need to be able to let your readers feel,see, touch, smell what the characters do.

Hi everybody!

I've been busy with Real Life stuff for the past week or so, which sadly meant I was unable to take part in CAW 11 which I'm quite sad about.

However, it does mean I have a story part-written, which will sit alongside my part-written non-entry for the Christmas CAW of last year and also my part-written story for CAW 5 (which was my own CAW!).

There's a pattern there

Anyway, I'm looking forward to catching up on all the goss... I'm off to GD now to see what's happening!
