Eureka (stylized as EUReKA) is an American science fiction television series that premiered on Syfy on July 18, 2006. Since then three and a half seasons have aired, and a fifth is currently being filmed. Season 4 continues on SyFy on July 11, 2011. The show is set in a fictional town called Eureka, Oregon, in the Pacific Northwest inhabited almost entirely by geniuses and scientists. Nearly everyone in Eureka works for Global Dynamics, a huge advanced research facility responsible for the development of all major technological breakthroughs in the last 50 years. Each episode features a mysterious accidental or intentional misuse of technology, which the town Sheriff Jack Carter then solves with the help of town scientists. Each season also features a larger story arc that concerns a particular major event or item.
The series was created by Andrew Cosby and Jaime Paglia and is produced by Universal Media Studios. The season one original music was composed by Mutato Muzika and season two and three were composed by Bear McCreary. The executive producers of the current season are Paglia, Charles Grant Craig, and Thania St. John. While initially lacking in strong critical acclaim, Eureka has been a popular success, averaging 3.2 million viewers during the second half of season three.[1] In 2007 Eureka was nominated for the Emmy Award for Outstanding Visual Effects for a Series and won the Leo Award for Best Visual Effects in a Dramatic Series.[2] In the United Kingdom on Sky1 the show is known as A Town Called Eureka although it is also shown under its original name on the BT Vision platform.[3] It was announced on August 17, 2010 that the show had been picked up for a fifth season of 13 episodes. Eureka takes place in a high tech fictional community of the same name, located in the U.S. State of Oregon (Washington in the pilot) and inhabited entirely by brilliant scientists working on new scientific advancements. The town is operated by a corporation called Global Dynamics (GD), that is overseen by the United States Department of Defense. The town's existence and location are closely guarded secrets. U.S. Marshal Jack Carter stumbles upon Eureka while transporting a fugitive prisoner (his own rebellious teenage daughter Zoe) back to her mother's home in Los Angeles. When a faulty experiment cripples the sheriff of Eureka, Carter finds himself quickly chosen to fill the vacancy. Despite not being a genius like most members of the town, Jack Carter's ability to connect to others, his simple but effective ideas, his above average intelligence in practicality, and his steadfast dedication to his work repeatedly saves Eureka, and sometimes the entire world, from one would-be disaster after another. Dont miss the rest of Season Four every Monday at 8pm Eastern Time on the SyFy Channel.

Syfy Channel launched its brand new line of Monday night original dramas this week, drawing an average of more than 2 million viewers over three hours and growing its audience hour-to-hour.
New superhero drama Alphas premiered at the top of the pack, ratings-wise, while Eureka and Warehouse 13 returned with strong numbers — despite some year-to-year erosion. Eureka began the night with the start of the back half of its fourth season, picking up an estimated 2.02 million viewers (Live + Same Day) in the 8 p.m. time slot and a 1.5 average household rating, according to Syfy. (Check out our sister site, SciFi Stream, for a full set of interviews with the Eureka cast!) The series has already been renewed and is currently filming its fifth season in Vancouver. At 9 p.m. Warehouse 13 returned for its third season, with 2.34 million viewers and a 1.74 rating. Syfy capped off the night with the premiere of Alphas at 10 p.m., averaging 2.52 million viewers (a 1.84 rating) for its 90-minute premiere. That’s the strongest original series premiere Syfy has had since Warehouse 13 bowed in 2009. (Not coincidentally, it’s also the first original, scripted drama since then to premiere in the summertime.) But the move to Monday wasn’t all flowers and candy for the two returning shows. Eureka‘s premiere was down 10 percent from last summer’s finale, and 20 percent from the season premiere last July (Fridays). Warehouse 13 dipped 2.5 percent from September’s Season Two finale, and 21 percent from last July’s premiere (Tuesdays). The new Monday night line-up is the first time (that we can remember) since the Friday night line-up of Stargate SG-1, Stargate Atlantis, and Battlestar Galactica that the cable network has stacked three original, scripted dramas on the same night, which surely helps retain audience members from one hour to the next. Syfy’s strategy in recent years has been to spread out its original programming to cover more nights of the week. The big premiere numbers demonstrates not just viewers’ love for these shows, but further proves that Syfy’s original dramas perform markedly better during the less competitive summer season — especially when they aren’t airing on Friday nights. Later this week, Syfy will premiere unscripted originals Ghost Hunters and Legend Quest (series premiere) on Wednesday, followed by the second season premiere of scripted Haven on Friday. Since that show enjoys the post-wrestling time slot, we’ll be very interested to compare Haven‘s ratings with the new Monday night block next week.

Syfy Channel’s returning dramas gained a little ground in the ratings last Monday night, but newcomer Alphas shed some viewers. Here are the numbers for Syfy’s original dramas for the second week of the summer season.
In its second week Eureka gained 7 percent, up to 2.162 million viewers (Live + Same Day). Warehouse 13 won the night with an impressive 2.457 million viewers for its second episode of Season Three. This is a 5 percent improvement over the July 11 premiere). Finally, Alphas capped off the night with 2.225 million live viewers — still strong, despite a drop of about 12 percent from the series premiere. In its season premiere at the end of Week 1, Haven picked up 1.884 million viewers. (WWE drew 2.552 million that night as Haven‘s lead-in.) This is the show’s best performance since mid-season last summer, and 11 percent better than the first season finale. UPDATE: In its second week Haven slipped slightly to 1.837 million (down 2 percent), but held steady with a 0.5 rating in the adults 18-49 demographic.

Not every show can live forever … but is Eureka‘s time drawing near?
Deadline reported this week that Syfy Channel is planning to wrap up the show with a very brief, 6-episode sixth season. Season Five is currently filming 13 episodes, while Season 4.5 airs new episodes on Monday nights. If the network keeps up its summer scheduling for the show, that would put the final run of episodes in the summer of 2013. It’s a long way off — but, still, it’s hard for fans of any show to know that it’s all coming to an end. On the upside, however, it means that the network is giving the writers plenty of time to bring the story to a fitting conclusion and not cut it off mid-sentence — the fate suffered most recently by Stargate Universe and Caprica. Syfy hasn’t confirmed the report, though programming exec Mark Stern issued the following statement: Bruce Miller and Jaime Paglia have brought a creative vitality to Eureka that has kept it fresh and inventive. Although we do not have a commitment beyond six episodes for the sixth season, we are hopeful that this will not be the end of the franchise. This may mean that it’s just too early for a final decision to have been made on the series. After all, the network still has the rest of Season Four and all of Season Five to air, and check out the ratings numbers. On the other hand, if the decision really hasn’t been made yet, you’d expect the network to simply say so. The other possibility, then, is that Syfy could be planning for a spin-off of the show, perhaps including one or more characters crossing over to a new environment. Eureka was the network’s highest-rated original series when it premiered in 2006. So what happened? Ratings are still pretty strong. Last summer the show premiered to 2.52 million viewers, and concluded with 2.25 million. This summer’s premiere was down a bit at 2.02 million people (Live + Same Day). Over 2 million viewers is a very nice number, especially compared to those original shows that air during the more competitive fall and winter seasons. SGU, Caprica, Sanctuary, Being Human … none of them have approached the 2 million figure in the last year. Nevertheless, Syfy has an embarrassment of riches during the summer: Warehouse and newcomer Alphas are outpacing Eureka on Mondays. Haven, on the other hand, has been anchoring Friday nights with around 1.9 million viewers. Certainly Eureka could do better in the Friday 10 p.m. time slot. But it’s also an older show, and one of the sad realities of TV production is that, the older a series gets, costs go up while ratings trend downward. It’s almost certainly premature for Syfy to be talking “sequel” in public. They did that earlier this year for a hopeful Warehouse 13 spin-off, only to have the show’s producer state publicly that no deal was done and they’d only just started preliminary discussions. (Deadline also reports that Syfy is poised to renew Warehouse for a fourth year.) If it is the end of the road for Eureka, fans have a lot to be thankful for. It’s had a nice, long run; the end is still far away; and, best of all, the writers won’t be blindsided by a ratings-hungry network and will be able to give the characters a happy ending.

I just read that this season is the last season they are not making a season 6 and that sucks. SyFy always ends the good shows early. First Stargate Universe now Erueka. I love both shows and now they are ending or are gone

there is still a Season Five of Erueka that hasnt aired yet until next Summer. Stargate Universe was a great show. SyFy let us hanging with alot of questions on Universe and along with the other two Stargate shows. Plus SGU was starting to get good but like in that article they were showing Universe at the wrong time instead of doing it in the Summer like it used to be for SG-1 and Atlantis.

The little town with big secrets is about to lock its gates for good. Syfy has announced that the show’s fifth season, currently filming in Vancouver to air in 2012, will be the last for Eureka.
It’s something of a surprise, considering the show has continued to deliver decent ratings numbers — just over 2 million viewers (Live + Same Day) in the four episodes that have aired since the start of Season 4.5 last month. But shows do get more expensive to produce the older they get, and the ratings are down from last summer’s average of 2.37 million. Deadline reported last week that the network was considering a shortened, 6-episode sixth season, to give the writers sufficient time to wrap up any dangling story threads. Season Five will consist of 13 episodes, and will finish filming in just two weeks. But this week Syfy gave the execution order, dropping the idea of the wrap-up … though they do insist that the series will have “a satisfying end.” The network issued the following statement: After painstaking consideration, we have had to make the difficult business decision to not order a season six of Eureka. But Eureka is not over yet. There is a new holiday episode this December and 12 stellar episodes set to debut next year, marking its fifth season and six memorable years on Syfy. The 2012 episodes are some of the best we’ve seen, and will bring this great series to a satisfying end. We are very grateful to Bruce Miller and Jaime Paglia, their team of incredible writers, and an amazing cast and crew who have consistently delivered a series we continue to be very proud of. We thank the fans for their support of this show and know they will enjoy its finalseason in 2012.As the opening hour for Syfy’s Monday night block of originals the veteran show is rating lower than its lead-outs, Warehouse 13 (2.27 million) and Alphas (2.18 million). But it’s usually considered a good thing that a night of programming builds in the ratings, rather than losing viewers from hour-to-hour. All three series have been tracking far and away higher than any of Syfy’s fall and winter shows, which face stiffer competition from other networks. Syfy cancelled Caprica in October, with the show turning in fewer than 800,000 live viewers on Tuesday nights. Stargate Universe followed in December, after averaging just north of 1 million. But Being Human and Sanctuary were renewed after just under 1.5 million. The network’s lowest-rated original, scripted drama for the summer season is actually Haven, which has averaged 1.89 million viewers on Friday nights. During the non-summer months, the post-wrestling timeslot has actually made for bigger numbers. (WWE Smackdown is Syfy’s highest rated program, with between 2.5 and 3 million viewers every week.) Five seasons on Syfy Channel seems to be about the max, the tipping point at which production costs outweigh the benefits of good ratings. The cable channel has never kept a scripted drama in production longer than this, with Stargate SG-1 and Atlantis getting five years each on the network, and Battlestar Galactica and Farscape both finishing at four. Enjoy those new episodes of Eureka while you still can! The series airs Mondays at 8/7c on Syfy.

The show is an average US sci fi, it is pretty formulaic with not many original plots, worth watching but nothing to rush home for.
