I wouldn't call this place a safe haven, more like a den of iniquity.

I have some German in my family line. Does that count?

Define "real" German. Just because I wasn't born there doesn't make me any less German.

That is a question for baller, the font of all knowledge on Europe.

At a guess a real German is a person born within the borders of Germany, or West Germany and East Germany between 1945 - 89, and holds a German Ausweiss.

But I could be wrong and await Her Baller to correct me by including the Sudaten land, Austria and East Prussia.

So I must not be a real "German" because I was born in the US, to parents who were "German", but born in the US, to parents who were "German", but born in the US, to parents who were "German" and born in Germany. Interesting. Does that make me a "fake German". Maybe that makes me nothing at all. Maybe I don't really exist because I'm a nobody.

So if a real pregnant "German" woman is shopping in Paris and goes into labor and gives birth there, it must mean that her baby is not a real "German". If you follow that way of thinking.

That makes you German-American but you can't say that because it's not politically correct.

No it works the same way as the British Forces, my son was born in Germany but was registered as English on his Birth certificate.
If the parents register the child as French then that is what he will be, but if they register him as German born abroad then it will be German, confusing but it is the way I think it should be done.

As for your self you are a US citizen of German heritage, where I am English of Irish and Welsh heritage, but I will always be English.

I've owned 5 Volkswagons over the years. I'll bet that Jamie can't make that claim. The first one was a 1960. All of the informational stickers were only written in German.

I think that is the definition of being an American. Not German to be honest. You have German heritage but it's not your nationality. I would say you are 3 generations away from being a German.

I find that a lot of Americans do the same thing to be honest. Baller for example thinks he's Irish, and he hates the English. I have one grandparent that is Irish born and bread, and still lives there. Which actually makes me more Irish than Baller, I still don't think of myself anything other than English. Despite only one of my Grandparents being born in England.

It still makes me a real "German", in my opinion. I'm sure there are people living in Germany that consider themselves real "Germans", but their heritage would argue that fact. I probably have more German blood than some of them.

I consider myself German. Yes, I'm a US Citizen, but I am a German.

I don't believe the question implied citizenship. I take offense to being told I am not German when in fact, I am. You can't say I'm not when the bloodlines I come from argue that fact. It doesn't matter where a person is born - it's their blood. Am I supposed to say I'm American? That can imply Canadian or Argentinian.

But if we are going to keep going back generation after generation to define a nationality, why not call yourself African. After all, that is where everyone's heritage fundamentally begins. I believe it's only Americans that tend to do this, maybe it is because your country is still young and calling yourself American only provides a couple of centuries of history to relate to.

If I was to move to America, become a citizen, marry someone that 3 generations ago was from Britain and have children. My children would be American, they might have an English dad, and some English heritage, but they wouldn't be English kids.

I don't think it comes down to blood, I think it comes down to experiences, you are who you are based upon what you do, where you are brought up etc.

I don't mean any of it in a disrespectful way though. Just offering an opinion. I'm not necessarily right. Just saying it how I see it.

But fine, based on that definition, I'm basically nothing. Because there is no country of America. There are North and South continents that contain countries (Canada, United States) and then all of the South American countries. According to people who do not live in the United States, apparently we lose all of our heritage because of where we live.

Thanks.

Good luck trying to explain that to Americans of African decent even though none of their family members have set foot on African soil in over 150 years.

The same holds for people coming here from Mexico.

Is that because you feel we're all ignorant? Oh yeah, we don't have any history so of course we've never heard of anyone elses.

I was trying to agree with you. Most of us here have heritage in other countries. The Africans and Mexicans seem to be the only ones who can claim that heritage.

What does it say on your birth certificate. Place of birth USA, nationality US Citizen, that then makes you a US citizen.
I think people tend to call you Americans because of the last word in the name of your country and United States of Americans looks and sounds stupid.
Your bloodline may be of German origin but your place of birth and registration of birth makes you a US citizen.

I don't know why people are finding this hard to understand. You're 4th generation American(USA) therefore you are an American. You're heritage is German but that is not what you are, German is not the nation that defines you. By your logic I could define myself as an Anglo Saxon, or a Norman, or maybe a Celt or a Roman, but I don't, I'm British or English, not Anglo Saxon. Just like you are American not German. The only difference here is time scale. The fact of the matter is you're not the same as a 'real' German. i.e. someone born and raised in Germany.

Thedean, if you have paid any attention while you were wasting bandwidth here since 2005, you would have been able to find out how many Germans are here.
The pure definition of lazy.
You embarrass all Germans!

From which America am I an American? I am a United States citizen, not an American citizen. Why is it hard for you to understand that?

A previous poster said "real German". That poster did not say citizen and did not say national. By heritage, I am as much a German as that person. I take offense to anyone saying I'm not. Can you tell? I happen to be very proud that I"m German. Apparently, some people don't think I qualify.

If my parents are Japanese and I am born in Hamburg, that does not make me a German. It makes me Japanese - certainly not white, anglo-saxon protestant. If I"m born in the middle of the ocean on a Norwegian cruise ship, does that make me Norwegian?

Interesting. Does that make me a "fake German". Maybe that makes me nothing at all. Maybe I don't really exist because I'm a nobody.

So if a real pregnant "German" woman is shopping in Paris and goes into labor and gives birth there, it must mean that her baby is not a real "German". If you follow that way of thinking.
Funny thing though...if a baby gets born in France, even if on a plane over France, it automatically gets French citizenship...and when it turns 18 they´ll want him for the Army too

Crazy French!

The pure definition of lazy.
You embarrass all Germans!
Not very orderly of him...I agree

Maybe now but not in 1960. That car was all German.

@Jamie. French cars? They don't exist in the US and haven't been imported here in years.

The last Renault was imported to the US in 1989. French built or badged cars have never sold well here.

Maybe. Maybe not. I had an MG and loved it but couldn't buy parts at the time. Lots of German and Japanese cars here and Volvo seems to be doing rather well here, too. The Chinese don't seem willing to build a car to our pollution standards so there are no Chinese cars here. I doubt the Russians would have a chance in our market.

I didn't think you meant me personally. What I want and can't buy here is a car that will consistently get over 45 mpg without being a hybrid.
