Since I'm feeling particularly shameless, here's a few previews of upcoming stories I'm working on:

From "The Mummy":

"For the record," said Sharon, "I haven't forgotten that you touched the display."

"Got it," said Marcus.

"I may still get you fired. I haven't decided yet."

"Got it," he said again. "So what's the deal? Did the other museum seriously not know they had a mummy in this thing?"

"This didn't come from a museum, it was a private collection. And yes, I would guess that they never knew. Very likely they never opened it. But that still doesn't explain how it got in there."

Marcus circled it. "Maybe it's Usermontu?"

"Couldn't be, they'd have checked when they recovered the coffin. And this style looks all wrong for a Rammeside-era embalming anyway. I mean, that's just a preliminary guess, but look at the quality of the-"

Marcus jumped back. "Jesus Christ!"

Sharon looked up. "What?"

"It moved!"

She frowned. "Don't be silly."

"I just saw its hand move, look!" Marcus pointed. He'd gone pale, and his voice was trembling.

"It was a trick of the light,” said Sharon.

"But I heard something move in the sarcophagus before I opened it, and now it just did it again. I'm telling you, I know what I saw!"

"Look, ignoring the very obvious fact that he's dead, his bones would crumble to dust if there was so much as the slightest pressure-"

She stopped. Something had grabbed her wrist.

Marcus was hyperventilating. His pointing finger shook. Sharon's blood froze. Whatever it was felt leathery and dry. I don't want to look, she thought. I don’t want to look.

But she looked anyway.

From "To Hell on a Fast Horse":

Suddenly Mallory was there, charging up the steps from her room behind the bar. She was dressed in her nightgown and hugging a blanket around her shoulders. "What in the hell is going on - oh my God!" she said.

"Since when do you have a God?" said Amelia.

"You killed him, you killed a man, in my place!" said Mallory.

"No, I didn't," said Amelia. "That one was dead already. Now you, you I wouldn't mind killing here." She turned the gun on the other woman and pulled the hammer back. Mallory's eyes widened. The Colt was empty of course, but she guessed Mallory didn't know that. Probably couldn't count that high.

Amelia led Mallory downstairs at gunpoint and made her empty the cashbox into a bag, then corralled her into the storage room. "I'm taking your favorite horse," said Amelia as she barricaded the door. "We'll call it my back pay."

The storm was still howling outside, but Amelia preferred riding through it to staying here with Tom Miller's twice-dead corpse. She put on her best coat and shook Mallory's white mare awake. It would take Mallory a while to break that door down, and by the time she roused the sheriff from his evening drunk Amelia would be halfway to the border. And after that? Somewhere else; anywhere else, so long as it was as far as possible from the place that Tom Miller’s body was supposed to lie.

"You must want something," said Darius. He leaned in, just a little, and the legs of his chair scraped the floor. "When you woke up this morning, didn't you feel there was anything missing from your life?"

"Yes, "said Luc. "I mean, no. I mean, it's hard to put my finger on."

Darius smiled. "This sounds promising."

Luc watched the cell phone woman walk away; the fit of her pink jogging shorts was very apparent.

"Well, it's just, it's my wife, you know?" he said. "I've been married for four years. Have you ever been married?"
"No, but I'm familiar with the institution."

"Don't get me wrong," said Luc, gulping his coffee too fast and burning himself. "I love my wife. She's amazing. And I love our life together, and our daughter, and our house. Everything is-"

"Perfect?"

"Yes. It is. It really is. But I feel like I'm missing, I don't know, excitement? Adventure?"

"Exoticism, maybe?"

"Yes!" said Luc, his voice going up an octave. "That's it exactly."

"Well, I can help you with that, but that's not a wish," said Darius. "You need to be more specific. What is it that you want, exactly?"

Luc looked at him. He looked desperate and hungry around the edges. "Is there such a thing as a bad wish?" he said.

"Well, there's such a thing as a stupid wish," said Darius. "But bad, as in morally bad? I don't think so. Wishes are like dreams, or fantasies; there's nothing wrong with wanting something."

"But what if what you want hurts someone?"

"I'll make sure it doesn't. As best I can, anyway." Darius waved a hand. "Come on Luc, stop beating around the bush. Make a wish. See what happens."

Luc took a deep breath. "Okay then. All right." He licked his lips. "I wish..."

Well, I've given up trying to get the formatting error fixed on this one, so I guess I just have to live with it. It's terrible what loneliness can do to a person, and to anyone unlucky enough to be around them:

"Man Nor Beast."

Since music is usually such a big influence on what I write, I like to single out one song to accompany each story. It's not necessary to listen to it, but it helps with atmosphere:

"Burn" by the Cure.

I took a trip to a museum a few months ago, and this is what came of it. I certainly hope the staff don't mind:

"The Mummy."

Since music very often informs what I write, I like to pair stories with particular songs. You don't have to listen to the song if you read the story, of course, but it's good for atmosphere:

"Strange Little Girl", by the Stranglers.

And for anyone curious, here is the actual mummy the story is based on. The anecdote about its unexplained arrival is actually true, for the record.

I just posted my CAW10 entry, "Phantom: A Love Story." Since the theme of this challenge was simply being the best, I chose the most ambitious project that I had on the back burner. It was a hell of an undertaking and I hope the results hold up.

Since music is a big part of my inspiration (and is particularly important to this story), I like to pair individual stories with related pieces of music. It's not necessary to listen to the score, of course, but it helps set the mood. Accompanying "Phantom" we have "Moonlight Sonata".

I’m shamelessly promoting two stories this time that share one common feature. The main female character in each is a high school teacher but the story similarity ends there.
The first is titled The School Spinster Takes A Chance and is my first character driven, dialog heavy actual romance story. Word of warning - it is long and takes awhile for the “action” to start. Story is over 20,000 words (46 ms word pages). May take some time to read, especially for slower readers. Take your time and enjoy! Tags include romance, consensual sex, oral sex and older female/younger male.
　
The second is titled Principal Johnson Is Hard On The New Teacher and has no socially redeeming qualities at all. It does come in a shade under 6,000 words so it is a quickie though .
Tags include (but not limited to) interracial, blackmail, male domination, bondage, reluctance and non-consensual sex. It’s a hoot.

Welcome; that is one thing we may want to consider doing is with any great story stumbled across in the main site, post a link and comment to it here in the forum as well. ALSO PM the author, as in the case of ROOM who is a new author on the site, to let them know.

New authors not really aware of the forum stories area may get really lost or discouraged in the main site meatgrinder.

The first series in ongoing and the second series is more about setting a scene where the unusual is normal and almost anything can happen. It will most likely be used for short stories with characters that aren't interconnected to each other more often than not. The staff came together from an entire group of players in a game that we ran years ago.
