When I was little in Texas, my grandmother would regale me with tales of the Civil War (That is the right name, you DAMYANKEES!) which she got from her mother, and maybe from her husband. He was born in 1868, and she was born in 1885.

To her it was as fresh as the Battle of the Boyne in 1649 is to the Irish.

I remember about the scorched earth policy in the march through Georgia, and other things.

I guess she would have been mortified at my interactions with the "damyankees" in my life.

And YES, I did finally overcome the Southron (deliberate) bias against the, uh, notwhite folks.

Then of course since this was Texas; Texas History was required where we were all brainwashed about TEXAS WAR OF INDEPENDENCE. Texas was a recognized republic internationally for TEN years, and the capital was Washington-on-the-Brazos initially, but moved to Austin, TX.

Some Texas who moved to Nevada thought it would be a good idea to have the state capital in the middle of the state, so he founded the town of Austin, NV, right there. It never went very far.

I am actually an ADMIRAL in the Texas Navy because I contributed to moving the battleship Texas to the San Jacinto Monument Grounds. However, I much prefer EMPRESS, thank you!

A proper Southerner refers to that war as the War Between the States, or the Second American Revolution, or the War for Southern Independence.

I don't have military service either. But as an outsider looking I've never seen anyone except a couple nutcases fail to follow the orders they were given.

And if that included securing military bases and suppressing insurrection in the Southern States the hard way I don't think they would have a problem.

One of my historical regrets is that the Union did not make better use of the Henry Rifle and the Gatling Gun. The Henry Rifle was an early forerunner of the Winchester Repeating Rifle. The Gatling Gun was the predecessor of the machine gun.

The Gatling Gun was not patented until 1862, but the Henry Rifle was available at the beginning of the Civil War.

The intelligent and thorough use of the Henry Rifle and the Gatling Gun would have enabled the Union to win the war much earlier by annihilating the Confederate Army.

actually, no, the Gatling gun wasn't the predecessor of the machine gun. a machine gun uses some of the energy generated by the cartridge being fired to operate the mechanism of the gun. the Gatling, on the other hand, uses an external source of power to feed ammunition into the gun, turn the barrels, and eject the spend casing. that's why a Gatling can operate at a much fasted fire rate (multiple thousands of round/minute) than a machine gun (hundreds of rounds/minute).

I do not disagree with you, btw, about how these innovations could have been used to shorten the war, but one thing is constant in the military mind: generals are always ready to fight the last war. in this case, they drew most of their training and tactical ideas from the European armies that had fought in the Napoleonic War. that the weapons had changed radically, from smooth-bored muskets to rifled guns that could hit and kill several times further out, was one major factor in why the Civil War played out the way it did. that same 'hide-bound' attitude towards innovation was also the main reason why the Henry rifle and the Gatling gun never saw more than limited service. to change that, you'd have had to change the thinking of the military leaders, and good luck with that one, then or now.

A friend of mine who owns a gun collection, and who loves guns as I do not told me that the U.S. Secretary of War during the Civil War opposed the use of the Henry Rifle and the Gatling Gun because they would waste bullets. Everyone in the North who lost a loved one in the War should have petitioned for his dismissal. It is better to waste bullets than soldiers.

The Henry Rifle and the Gatling Gun could have greatly reduced casualties in the North. By annihilating the Confederate Army they would have made Reconstruction easier. With few surviving Confederate veterans there would have been few to join the Klu Klux Klan.

You are correct in pointing out that rifles during the Civil War had greater range and were more accurate than muskets during the Napoleonic conflicts. Nevertheless, the military still had the attitude, "don't shoot until you see the whites of their eyes." Consequently, opposing forces frequently got so close that they could hardly miss.

Historically the really great generals were the ones who had a technical advantage over their enemies and who knew how to use it. For Alexander the Great this was the Greek phalanx plus cavalry men riding horses. The Macedonians probably learned that from the Scythians. The Persians used chariots. These were pulled by two or three horses. If an archer hit one of the horses he stopped the chariot. A cavalry man on a single horse was more maneuverable and presented a smaller target. Alexander the Great never lost a battle.

Genghis Khan had several advantages. One of them was the fact that everyone in the Mongolian Army fought on horseback. This gave the Mongolian Army far more speed and maneuverability than any other army at the time. There were three branches of the Mongolian Army: the heavy cavalry, the light cavalry, and mounted archers. Another advantage was the composite bow. This was more powerful than any other bow in existence, but the cross bow. Unlike the cross bow the composite bow did not have to be loaded on the ground. A third advantage was that the Mongolian Army was a meritocracy. In other armies officers were usually chosen from the aristocracy.

German success in the beginning of the Second World War was due to the fact that German generals had a better grasp of the use of tanks and air planes than their enemies.

During the War in the Gulf the United States did understand the advantage of precision guided munitions, and knew how to use them properly. During the Wars in Afghanistan and Iraq the United States made the mistake of assuming that the Afghans and Iraqis would welcome foreign soldiers as liberators. Americans are not good at occupying hostile populations that are willing to fight back because we are not ruthless enough.

The Mongolian Army did not have that problem. I am not sure how this could be estimated, but I have read that during the Mongolian conquests thirty percent of the Chinese were killed, and the population of the world declined by ten percent. The Arab world never recovered from the Mongolian conquests. Mongolian aggression ended the golden age of Arab civilization.
