Between an incompetent beneficiary of affirmative action with good intentions, and a competent vulture capitalist with bad intentions, we do not have much of a choice. Nevertheless, Obama has maintained a slight lead in most of the polls for most of the time.

My guess is that most voters have the sense to realize that as bad as things are, they would get worse under Romney, especially if he has Republican majorities in both houses of Congress.

For Romney and the people he cares about the economy is not the job market, but the stock market. A fairly high rate of unemployment benefits the people Romney cares about because it means that they do not have to compete for employees.

Maybe they do, but not me. I could live with NASA giving pro bono satellite time to the green movement and all those worthless Congress-funded shills at that the National Academy of Sciences.

But I have a problem with the way we mothballed our one and only manned orbital vehicle and handed out pink slips without an alternative.

Politicians lie because when they tell the truth they lose elections. In his acceptance speech at the Democratic National Convention in 1984 Walter Mondale said it was necessary to raise taxes. It was. He lost by a landslide.

The United States faces serious problems that lack easy or obvious solutions. It may well be the case that the U.S. economy will contract no matter who does what. A politician who told the voters that would suffer the same fate as Walter Mondale.

Romney lies when he says he cares about employees. For vulture capitalists like Romney employees are not assets; they are expenses.
