If you really live in Michigan, it's no wonder - even though the unemployment rate is hovering around 9%, the better jobs there have slipped away and are being replaced by lower-paying, low-skill and un-skilled labor jobs. How far are you prepared to move to find decent work?

If you had a chance to move out of state (not too far away) to earn between $85,000 - $120,000 for a season or two, would you do it?

Are you and your son's mother still together? What's her employment situation? Maybe all of you should move. Do you have friends or family that live in a state where employment is better? Anyone you could stay with until you get on your feet? Move to an area that has good public transportation. What kind of work are you looking for? What kind of experience do you have?

Yes that's good money but I'd have to be guaranteed my uncle moved half the country away for a job opportunity and two years later the company shut down

A lot of times when it comes to jobs I either have too much experience or not enough it's a bitch when you're over qualified for a job

Check on the oil fields. I have a secure job now but I was laid off 3 years ago for about 8 months I thought about picking up but I got this job. If I did get laid off again I would try to find a job at the fields. Check indeed dot com for jobs too.

Yeah, "fracking" is hot right now. There are lots of jobs for strong me4n that don't mind hard physical work. They're doing it in northern Michigan.

Check out oilfield jobs where the boom is on such as North Dakota or Pennsylvania. And especially look at the drilling contractors (the actual drilling rigs). Most of those jobs are over $30 per hour and you work a week on (staying in camps provided by the contractor) and a week off.

Some of the rigs in North Dakota are working two weeks on and two weeks off just because of the distance they have to travel from several states away.

But anyway you work your hitch at the rig, and stay at the camp and then when you get days off you just go home until its time to go back to the rig.

True but if you want to get into the fracking you better hurry because the oil and gas companies are lying about how much and how bad fracking pollutes ground and well water but they can't lie forever and its about to catch up with them.

Oh, I totally agree, but this guy is young and if he works hard and saves his money for a few years, he could use the money to go back to school and study something that he wants to do that has more longevity. Even without the pollution problems, they're already having trouble storing all the natural gas that they're getting through fracking.

Suggestions to find a job
1) Get off the web. Monster.com et al are a waste of time unless you want lots of spam.
2) Network. Tell your friends, family, former co workers, strangers, you are looking for work.
3) Get professional help with your resume. Try the state employment office; they generally offer decent advice.
4) BUG your state employment office; who's hiring, who is growing, what the hell is going on? Do not let them direct you to their job search engine. See item one above.
5) Hit every local, county, and state government career site; every one will have a page for jobs. Government is about the only one hiring in Michigan.
6) Hear a rumor a company is hiring? Check out their competitors; chances are they are as well. Check out their web pages for a careers tab.
7) Network.
network
9) network

Did you know something like half of all new openings are never advertised in public forums? They get filled by networking people who hear an opening is coming up and get in line first.

What kind of training do you have? What work have you done? I recently semi-retired from mechanic work for halliburton and they are always looking for mechanics. Top pay for top talent I was making over $80hr but I was getting hazard pay because I agreed to work in the middle east.

No, no I've seen this before. I went to school with a guy that was so gifted he got into the Montana School of Mines. But he'd been putting himself through school by roughnecking every summer. Then he got in a hurry and come consultant offered him a job for $300 a day and he dropped out.

And there he is stuck in that job he loves and only making $3,000 per day today.

One more thing about the oilfield.

If you're not capable of pouring someone else's clean piss in cup at the right temperature (94 degrees) without getting caught you probably don't have the necessary skills to begin with.

But anyway you can bet on being piss tested a lot.

Do not wait for obumbnuts to make the environment good for job creators, if you do you will never work again.

He has actually gotten rid of jobs that will never come back, and people are working part time because there are no full time jobs.

If we have this ass for 4 more years we are done.

What is the matter Throbbing? Did your check from the government come late?

Just see if you still get Federal Assistance after four years of Republican rule.

Niether the Democrates or Republicans are good for the country. This country will keep going down hill till we get working class men in office.

I like the Democratic Party that existed from 1932 to 1964. It was dominated by Ivy Leaguers, but they were motivated by noblesse oblige.

In the Democratic blow out of the election of 1964 the Democrats had mandates to avoid war with the Soviet Union and to preserve the basic reforms of the New Deal. Unfortunately, the Democrats exceeded their mandates by expanding the welfare system, while making punishment less severe for criminals. The black ghetto riots that began in 1964 required harsh responses. Unfortunately, too many liberal Democrats were sympathetic.

This is funny! A lazy welfare troll like stumbler giving job advice.

The unemployment under Obama is much worse than what is being reported.

But it's just another example of the big failure that is Obama....

I had that problem years ago so I went into business for myself. You can start a small service business on the cheap in many instances and grow as you go.

You don't need no stinking job.

Yeah, I feel you. I'm in grad school, so it's hard for me to find anything since I can't work full-time--and even part-time is kind of a stretch. One thing I'm sure people are already aware of but that I can't stress enough is how useless staffing agencies are. You go in, you do a pointless typing test, and fill out all your info again despite the fact they already have it, and after waiting for about 20 minutes with your hands folded, somebody calls you in. They ask the most general questions, and go through the same script even if you are inquiring about a specific job. And then, in all likelihood, you never hear from them again. Monster.com is especially littered with nothing more than ads from staffing agencies. Who even knows if those jobs exist.

I also don't necessarily think furthering your education is your best bet. I'm in law school and the employment market for lawyers is at its all-time worst. So many people are graduating without jobs, or even job prospects. Unless you're in the sciences, for many, grad school, is a waste. *hope that doesn't happen to me*
