So being a guy who frequents the gym I was wondering, what is it like to be a woman in a gym?
I've been told it can be awkward because you're just there to work out and it's annoying when guys are still checking you out or trying to hit on you, but as a guy it doesn't really happen to me, so I'm just curious.
What are your thoughts?

I was just thinking the same thing OP. I toured a new gym in the neighborhood Friday,..and it was flooded with gorgeous women of all ages. I could hardly concentrate on what the rep was telling me. All, and I mean ALL I could see was the tight black spandex that goes to the mid thigh or to the calves,..wrap around curvy bodies. I myself go there to train and blow off alot of work stress. But it is hard to focus when some women "don't intentially" present themselves the way men look at them. I don't blame women for being upset at the gawking guys. But when you're beautiful, with or without sweat,..with or without makeup,...you're a heavenly sight to behold and I admire them. Not gawk or stare,...just smile on the inside and say WOW!

Fair enough. And thank you very much for the lovely image. But what about if you're dressed in between? A lot of the girls my age wear more spandex. So say, what if a girl is wearing spandex shorts or yoga pants with a regular t-shirt?

Besides the whole not being able to concentrate thing this is exactly how I feel. It doesn't matter what clothing you wear, hell wear a mumu for all I care (though I don't advice it for exercising). Well, I work in a small private health club/gym where I teach yoga. In every - and I mean EVERY - gym I've ever been in, men are constantly checking out women...and pretty much every woman gets the eye regardless of her age or the way she dresses for her workout. Of course, women dressed like my friend Kimiko here obviously get more attention than others.

I totally agree that it doesn't seem to matter that much what you wear. Most of the guys at my gym are fairly subtle about these things, but I still catch them pretty often. They look at women a lot older than I am, too.

As for the woman who teaches yoga classes at my gym...I probably check her out more than the men do.

glad i do not have such problem , gyms here are either all men or women , it is more comfy that way actually , u can focus on ur workouts , showing everyday not afraid some lady will check out how much u left , or how unattractive ur body is

The weight room in our gym is a male dominated area both men and women check each other out in the other common areas (mostly glances) What pisses me off is the blond twat who comes there with a friend and goes out of her way to catch the men's eyes and attention by asking for help in our weight area. It's not that I wanted to show I was tough, but in some cases if I thought a girl was checking me out I'd have a boost in confidence. That confidence serves as a distraction for the amount of weight I'm moving and also adds into the belief factor.
I gambled in those instances and ended winning, and sometimes I don't. You have to pick yourself up and use it as motivation.
Sometimes you just have to go for it, whether the weight is heavier than what you've previously lifted or not. If you never strive for anything beyond what you're used to then you won't see real progress. I think this anecdote about Bruce Lee describes it better than I ever could:

Sorry to revive an old thread (my own at that) but I thought that it pertained to the subject.
I've recently taken up a yoga class and as I expected, I'm one of only a few guys in there. This doesn't bother me in the least bit, but I feel like a lot of girls are stealing glances at me. Like I said it's probably me just being vain or whatever. But I'm up at the front of the class and I swear I feel like I have eyes on me. Even the instructor looks a little bit longer than she does at the other students.

I can understand that. I would never want to interrupt anyone's workout.
