"Classic" Movies

Just asking a question....What do you think are classic movies....What do you consider to be Timeless......It can be far past or present.....it is up to you


For the first I would put down as a Timeless Classic, my personal favorite movie of all time....

1. Francis Ford Coppola's The Godfather Part 1

I heard they are doing a remake, I am nervous about this do to the Films popularity when It came out.

I thought David Boreanaz was rumored to play the lead. I know there were other books written about the Crow movie franchise, and if they find the right person the movie will propel the film to success.

yea Seeing how it was Brandon Lee's Last role and how he did a great job....it will be compared to it alot....so hopefully they do good, The writer is supposed to be great and such and the Lead isn't announced yet.....i think if they have a big budget....I would pick Johnny Depp. He loves kind of out there parts...I think this would be good for him, But alas I know it won't happen

To me, a "classic" movie is one which 1. was popular in its time, both by the average movie-goer and the critics, 2. is still popular today, and 3. is expected to be popular until the medium dies.

Of course, no one knows about 3, but having 1 & 2 under your belt is a good indication. The problem arises when new movies are called "instant classics" and so on when they haven't stood the test of time, simply because they haven't had the opportunity.

Comedies that joke about current events can't really be "classics" because the next generation of viewers can't be expected to get the jokes in quite the same way as the first generation. Same goes for horror movies where the fear is heightened by the times (movies that play on Cold War fears don't fly nearly as well today, for instance).

Keeping all this in mind, it becomes difficult to pick "modern classics." That being said, my pick for classics that everyone can watch and appreciate would be

Bill & Ted's Excellent Adventure, and Bill & Ted's Bogus Journey

I was raised on science fiction, so Enemy Mine is my classic. I even followed up on that movie with the book which takes place after the movie. I'm 27 and I feel ancient because every one I have talked to have knew a book was made after it, but I knew of it because of my dad.

Chagrin's answer is the best I've seen.

While there is no correct answer to this question, since it is too relative and too personal, if you want a "classic" definition of what is "classic", it is any movie that has "STOOD THE TEST OF TIME"----in other words, NO MOVIE THAT IS CURRENT CAN BE CONSIDERED CLASSIC , but if in 20-25 years, it is still held in generally high regard (not just by YOU or three other people), then in may be considered classic.

In other words, just because YOU like Ernest Goes To Camp, does not mean that it is a classic film.

Meet John Doe-EXTREMELY relevant today, eeriely so.

The Sound of Music-THE family movie of all time

Star Wars-Episode four "A New Hope" (1976) the movie that started it all. George Lucas at his very best. Spawned five highly successful sequels/prequels. An Arthurian legend in space.

Tora, Tora, Tora-THE definitive Pearl Harbor story-told from both sides, without grandstanding, revisionist history, or any excessiveness.

The Longest Day-Star Studded doesn't begin to describe this true telling of the D-Day invasion. Thirty "A List" actors worked for scale in this flick, along with the "A List" German and French actors/actresses.

Titanic (199-This is THE definitive telling of the tale. Personally, I could've done without DeCaprio as I despise him and he nearly ruined this flick for me.

Fast Times at Ridgemont High-THE definitive high school movie-only the fashions are dated, but the themes are timeless. Oh yeah, and two of the most perfect breasts ever onscreen. You couldn't make this kind of movie today as 18 year olds playing 15 year olds in sex scenes-illegal.
