Any image of the destruction that was caused by the dropping of the atomic bomb on Hiroshima, should make anyone think that this must never happen again...

I've recently become a bit of a fan of Georgia O'Keefe. I quite like her "Cow's skull with calico roses" piece for the beautiful simplicity

And thanks for all the contributions, some very haunting and thought invoking pictures.

"The Clockmaker"

I really like this painting. I believe it's because of the strong industrial feel of the piece. It also speaks of time being deconstructed.
Ivan Vasilievich Kliun, who is Russian, painted it in 1914.

Maybe it is representing the dichotomy of the human mind, the yin and yang, serenity and anger, the fact that behind the quiet calm exterior could live the angry killer.

Just a thought but what the fuck do I know.

Default "I Told You So" by Ed Miracle

About 15 years ago, I noticed a painting at a pub in Washington D.C., depicting a ship sailing off the edge of the Earth. I later found myself thinking about it, regretting that I did not get any information about it, and not even remembering the name of the pub. (‘Twas one of many!) I was disappointed that I had no luck identifying it on-line, either.

Then, about 5 years ago, I was given Thomas Friedman’s book about economic globalization - The World Is Flat - and guess what picture was on the cover?

Since then, I’ve seen a few different versions of that painting - different colorizations and, in one version, one ship has already gone over the edge, with another soon to follow.

Sometimes that painting makes me consider how often we believe only what we can see or what has been “proven” to our satisfaction, and how many beliefs have a way of evolving over time. It reminds me that different cultures often have different beliefs - seldom is one entirely “right” and the other entirely “wrong” - but, in this case, it amuses me that most Greek philosophers dismissed the idea of a flat Earth by the first century A.D. but, as late as the 17th century, most Chinese still believed that it was flat.

Recently, the picture has made me think of how people handle catastrophe and mortality in different ways - fighting the inescapable right up to the bitter end, accepting one’s fate calmly and offering little resistance, or any number of scenarios in-between.

Don’t you just hate it when stuff makes you think?

When I was younger I treated art as a purely visual medium and thought that people who stood there espousing their views of what they see in the picture as pretentious assholes, now I can stand and look at paintings and think, some make me happy others sad, some just leave me cold, but they make me think which I think is now a better way of looking at art, but I still think the people who stand their espousing their views of what they see as pretentious twats.

Looking at you flat earth pics made me think almost instantly where does all the water come from. Odd.

No, I'm not saying don't think or say what you see, maybe I should have said. "Those guys that strike a dramatic pose and speak ,like a ham actor performing Hamlet, with a voice that carries as far as he can make it. "Yes and what the artist is trying to say here that if you sail your ship to close to the edge you will fall of, or, to put it more succinctly be careful what you do in life it is dangerous"

I see adventure and discovery is sometimes dangerous, as well as thinking where does all the water come from.

Then you're gonna LOVE this shit.

Years back, I visited the Museum of Modern Art in NYC, where one whole wall was taken up by a canvas that was painted blue - that's it - just blue. Like if you took a roller and covered a wall in your house with blue paint.

Now I (of all people) appreciate sarcasm, but it was hanging in an art museum! I'm so glad they hang a little card identifying each piece... the name of this piece is... wait for it... "Blue".

And here's the buffoon who explained it:

"Monochrome abstraction—the use of one color over an entire canvas—has been a strategy adopted by many painters wishing to challenge expectations of what an image can and should represent. Klein likened monochrome painting to an "open window to freedom." He worked with a chemist to develop his own particular brand of blue. Made from pure color pigment and a binding medium, it is called International Klein Blue. Klein adopted this hue as a means of evoking the immateriality and boundlessness of his own particular utopian vision of the world."

I just love the idea of storms and to capture them on cmaera is amazing they make you want to explore the world in new ways.

I also have a soft spot for pictures done by Anne Geddes.

I saw this recently - it's "Couple By Sea" by D.C. Newman Collins.

Though it's not a particularly sad scene (their facial expressions aren't visible), it immediately reminded me of a song by The Clancy Brothers and Tommy Makem ("The Dutchman", written by Michael Peter Smith), which manages to be both sad and romantic at the same time.
