Wiped out on his bike, shattered his spine, has virtually no feeling or muscle control from mid-thigh down.

He drives a race car with hand controls. Does pretty well with it, too. And he WILL kick your ass out on the track if you think you can intimidate him.

He wrecked one time at a track where he was not well known. His crew had helped him get from his wheelchair into the car, had strapped his legs down on special padded supports (so they wouldn't get injured by flailing around in the car), and had sent him on his way. Things got a little dicey, and he wound up hitting the wall hard and tumbling down the track. When the medics got to the car, the driver said, "I can't feel my legs!" Of course, that had been true for about eight years at that point.

Nice payback to the people who said he had no business in the sport as a "crippled" man.

From the way you describe it I take it he is a road racer?

Most of those cars are stick shift.

What hand control set up does he use?

What car does he race?

The yelling "I can't feel my legs" after a wreck I told a friend I would yell out the same thing if we were to get in a wreck one night.

About the relationship/dating stuff y'all were talking bout earlier...from my experiences all that competition has 2 legs advantage is horsecrap. Know this guy in wheelchair gets all the girls and he never pulled the pity/disabled card. Just like with any 2 legged creatures, confidence goes a looong way....right lioness?

He drives one of these (note: this is NOT his car). They race on dirt oval tracks running a 600cc crotch rocket (sport bike) engine. Most have a 6-speed transmission, but the clutch is on the shifter anyway, so he just needs hand controls for the throttle and brakes.

By the way, the guy has two kids with the woman he married AFTER he was paralyzed. Guess some things still work.

^^^That is pretty sick for him to drive a Outlaw car.I don't keep up much with circle track stuff so I don't know much about them other than big boys running V8 make north of 700 horsepower.And in that small lightweight of a car that is moving.


What series or class does he run in with that engine?

And especially with our conditions because so many look down in life when they are put to this test in life.

I have had MS for 20 years and I can confirm your observations about the problems we have with disability and women. You are in fact invisible or discounted sexually. There are exceptions but few and far between. We lust just as much as nondisabled people.

just got disablity...to make a long story short...spinal meningitis at 23 month,feet grew bad high arch and high instep...at 18 years old doc fixed feet, did not last now can't walk right no balince at all...in pain 24/7...doc ordered m s contin 30 mg 2 times a day not working but alot better...feet for a grown men you know ave rich size...me left foot is 6.5 eeeeee and right foot 4.5 eeeeee....right leg getting bad with age I'm only 48 years....will need wheel chair soon use one for like musimes...

not in a wheel chair yet...disabled in nov 2011....feet are bad...no store has my shoe size...everything is because of my back.... can't put right flat on floor at all....so no balince....

Like nikkitassassin said. Getting around in a wheelchair is not all that bad. Once you get one you will find it easier on yourself. It could also help out with your pain with less pressure on your feet and back. Don't wait too long to get one.

"Typical", healthy people sometimes are clueless at best or fucking rude at worst. I have learned to walk away from many fights, but I do tell the person he/she should be greatful they aren't in my shoes.

On the other hand I have seen people come to my defense, aid, support me out of pure kindness.

The stigma issue is still very much apparent with any mental illness, and I can bet that you have had people move away from your son once you tell them he is autistic, for some reason they think it is catching, cancer has the same affect on some people.

You are so right... Unfortunately for my husband, one of those stupid people was his best friend's wife. They grew up together, best men in each other's wedding, etc. etc.
