She is a very lucky person to have survived the attack, but one who paid a huge price.

I've been wondering if congresswoman Gabrielle Giffords was going to run for re-election and while this is not an official announcement it does appear Giffords is planning to seek re-election.

I hope so. I bet she's pretty much unbeatable right now.

Apparently Representative Gabrielle Giffords has changed her mind.

Gabrielle Giffords Stepping Down From Congress

Gabrielle Giffords will step down from Congress this week, according to a Youtube video posted to her account.


"I have more work to do on my recovery, so to do what is best for Arizona, I will step down this week," she said.



Giffords has served five years in the House. Last January, her term was disrupted when she was shot in the head at a public event in Tuscon. She has spent the past year undergoing intensive physical and speech therapy.


According to the Arizona Daily Star, she will submit her official letter of resignation to House Speaker John Boehner and Arizona Gov. Jan Brewer. Brewer will then schedule a special election to fill Giffords' seat for the remainder of her term.



The AP reports that her resignation is expected to take effect on Monday.


In the video, she asserts that she remains committed to public service.

Jared Loughner, Accused Tucson Gunman, Expected To Plead Guilty If Found Mentally Competent

TUCSON, Ariz., Aug 7 (Reuters) - A 23-year-old college dropout accused of killing six people and wounding 13 others, including then-U.S. Congresswoman Gabrielle Giffords, in a Tucson shooting rampage last year was expected to plead guilty on Tuesday if a judge finds him mentally competent, a person familiar with the case said.

A federal judge has set a competency hearing for Jared Loughner for 11 a.m. local time in U.S. District Court in Tucson, to be followed by a change-of-plea hearing if he is found fit to stand trial.

Giffords, an Arizona Democrat seen as a rising star in the party, was holding one of her regular "Congress On Your Corner" events at a Tucson supermarket in January 2011 when she was shot through the head at close range. The six people killed in the shooting include a federal judge and a 9-year-old girl.

A source close to the case has told Reuters that Loughner, who is charged with 49 criminal counts including first-degree murder, is prepared to change his plea to guilty. A not guilty plea was entered on his behalf last year.

Ironically, if he hadn't plea bargained he could have gotten the death penalty.

There are some of us who think that he should not be alive today.

Sure tenguy because don't believe in justice; just revenge.

But most of the victims supported life in prison instead of the death penalty especially considering Loughner's mental state.

Sarcasm noted. But the irony that still jumps out to me is it was not an armed citizen that stopped the carnage. It was an elderly woman that slapped a fully loaded clip out of his hand before he could reload.
