Patrick Troughton... Troughton, who began acting as a teenager in the mid-1930s, joined the Royal Navy at the outset of World War II at 19. He served throughout the war and received several decorations from combat situations. After the war, in 1945, Troughton returned to acting, mainly in plays although he had a minor role in the Disney/Robert Newton (Long John Silver) production of Treasure Island in 1950. Troughton portrayed The Doctor in 21 adventures over the course of 3 seasons.
Unfortunately, in the infinite wisdom of the BBC, the masters and prints of the great majority of Troughton-Doctor stories were destroyed in the early 1970s as part of a "housecleaning" project. Some of the missing episodes and stories were reconstructed through the discovery of tapes from workers, fans, and episodes sent overseas. Sadly, after 30 years of trying to find sources for the missing programs, it must be concluded that 14 of the 21 Troughton-Doctor stories are gone for good, leaving only 7. "Tomb of the Cybermen", "The Dominators", "The Mind Robber", "The Invasion", "The Krotons", "Seeds Of Death" and "War Games". 0000a1.jpg

Howdy umpire, great thread, big 'Who' fan. I was born midway through the first Jon Pertwee story, 'Spearhead From Space'. Dunno if you already knew this and were going to mention it, but the reason we never saw the Troughton to Pertwee regeneration is because at the end of 'The War Games' (Troughton's last story) no-one had actually been cast at that point to replace him.

Scientists there, attempting to stop the encroachment of glaciers, are using an 'ionizer' device to melt the ice, which has revealed a race of ICE WARRIORS that had been frozen there for at least 5,000 years...

The leader of The Ice Warriors, named Varga, reveals that they are part of a Martian invasion force sent to earth hundreds of years before. The Ice Warriors' civilization on Mars was dead and they had planned to colonize earth...The Doctor, of course, had to defeat them....

Intending to blow up the human base with a sonic cannon from the Ice Warriors space ship, the Ice Warriors also steal a key component of the human 'ionizer' that they could use to activate their power-drained vessel.
The Doctor discovers their plan, turns the sonic cannon on the Ice Warrior ship itself. And BANG, BOOM! No more Ice Warriors! (until they return in a later story...) 1.jpg

JAMIE & THE DOCTOR COULD PLAY EACH OTHER'S FOILS INTERCHANGEABLE, BUT THERE WAS ALWAYS A SENSE OF REAL AFFECTION BETWEEN THEM.

Frazier Hines returned as Jamie 14 and 16 years later in the stories "the Five Doctors" and "The Two Doctors".
