That is what hockey is all about ... seriously, we all need to get back out for some street pickup games. The one in the Parka isn't to hard to look at either.

Update:

Pho 1 LA 0 ... final

7 games in the NHL tomorrow and the trade deadline is just 11 days away.

Quote:
Why haven't there been any big trades yet?

There have been a couple of big trades this season, but they came earlier in the campaign. To this point, the only two deals where contending teams added someone for a future return are Chicago picking up Brendan Morrison and New Jersey obtaining Alexei Ponikarovsky from the Carolina Hurricanes.

The biggest reason there haven't been many trades yet is parity. There are 27 teams either occupying or within eight points of a playoff spot with somewhere around 25 games to go. If a team is eight points out right now, it has a very small chance of actually reaching the playoffs. But there is a chance, and general managers are trying to give their guys a chance to swing either way -- either keep winning to stay in it, or lose and fall out.

In previous seasons, a lack of salary cap space available was a big issue. That is much less of a problem this month -- lots of teams have room, but finding GMs ready to give up on 2011-12 has been problematic.

5th is not necessarily a bad place to be, but they are STILL not playing as a team (which got them both TO the Cup and to WIN the Cup last year) and way, way too many defensive lapses.

Thomas is back to his "old tricks" of playing poorly if he doesn't get enough action or if he gets too much action. It is impossible to ensure that he gets exactly 9 or 10 shots on goal per period.

We lost to Red Deer. No fights but lots of penalties, at least not 19 like last time.

As dangerous as the ice surface is for a wreck ... just getting there can be a challenge at times.

Toews uninjured in one-car accident Thursday

Thursday, 02.23.2012 / 3:27 PM

Quote:
Jonathan Toews was involved in a car accident Thursday morning in Chicago but was not injured, the Blackhawks said in a statement.

"Jonathan Toews was in a minor one-car collision in downtown Chicago this morning while driving himself to the United Center. He was not injured," the team said in the statement.

The local CBS television affiliate in Chicago first reported that Toews' car was involved in an accident in The Loop at the intersection of Lake and Garvey. An eyewitness at the scene said Toews left in an ambulance.

Toews is currently out of the lineup for the Blackhawks with an upper-body injury. He missed Tuesday night's game against Detroit and will not play tonight against Dallas.

"He's progressing," coach Joel Quenneville said of Toews' upper-body injury on Thursday morning. "I guess we'll say that's where we're at."

Canucks try to snap Wings' home streak, nab first

Quote:
The stakes could not be much higher for a regular-season game when the Vancouver Canucks visit the Detroit Red Wings on Thursday (7:30 p.m., NHLN-US).

Vancouver, the defending Western Conference champion, sits just two points behind Detroit for the top spot in the West and the League itself. Then there's the matter of the Red Wings' League-record 23-game home winning streak being on the line.

With a 20-10-2 mark, the Canucks bring the League's best road record into the game.

Along with great plot lines, the game also has intriguing subplots.Two-thirds of one of Vancouver's top forward lines are natives of the Detroit region -- Ryan Kesler (Livonia, Mich.) and David Booth (Detroit).

Just a note : Alberta is taking on Quebec right now in the Scotties Woman's Curling Championships (Alberta leads 4-2 in the 6th) and the winner gets the right to face Manitoba with the winner of that one taking on the waiting BC team. All in preparation for the World Championships in Lethbridge Alberta starting on March 17th, 2012.

Good on both teams and they deserve to be there ... have fun.

As for Hockey Night in Canada ... that is reserved for those of us that will be at the Saddledome in Calgary to watch the Flyers kick some Flames asses in less than 2 hours.

Update: Alberta defeats Quebec in Women's Curling 7-4 to move on to the semi-finals against Manitoba and they are on the ice as we speak. The winner will play for Gold tomorrow against BC.

Just wanted to mention Rick Hansen who was honored before the game tonight between Calgary and Philadelphia. Rick is a National hero to many for his "Man in Motion" wheelchair journey around the world to raise funds for spinal cord research.

Quote:
He embarked on his Man in Motion World Tour on 21 March 1985 from Oakridge Mall in Vancouver. Although public attention was low at the beginning of the tour, he soon attracted international media attention as he progressed on a 26-month trek, logging more than 40,000 km through 34 countries on four continents before crossing Canada. He returned to Vancouver's BC Place Stadium to cheering crowds of thousands on 22 May 1987 after raising $26 million for spinal cord research and quality of life initiatives. Like Terry Fox, he was hailed as an international hero.

There is no love lost between these two teams and it has been showing all night with a couple scraps and some seriously hard hitting on the boards. Calgary just scored on a penalty shot but Philly came right back to tie it 4-4 with 6 to go in the 3rd.

Notice "Kipper" taking a well deserved rest on the ice in the background during the scuffle, lol.

It took 10 shots in the shootout but Matt Read potted the winning goal to lead Philly to a 5-4 SO win against Calgary just now.

I have mixed feelings though as I know a bunch of the guys on the Flames team but a good win all the same ... Calgary still gets 1 point so not a total loss.

A girl at the Canucks game last year got a lifetime ban from the games or was it the arena for showing her breasts during a game. Don't you recall that?

Canucks Flasher Rocks Our World

Quote:
Moving Vancouver up several rungs on the “best sports city in North America” ladder, an enthusiastic Canucks fan flashed her breasts by the penalty box during their Western Conference Finals game against the San Jose Sharks last Wednesday. The show of (unsupported) support was accidentally televised nationwide over the Canadian Broadcasting Corporation.
Despite a few angry emails about the incident, which occurred during the third period of Vancouver’s 7-3 win over the Sharks, the CBC has no plans to institute a tape delay of future games. Video of the “fantastic” flash, as well as still pictures of the fan, have since gone viral on the Web.
It wasn’t my wife, I’ll tell you that. I didn’t see it. I don’t know what to say. I was playing hockey.
- Canucks captain Henrik Sedin
Fans in Vancouver have long found creative ways to express their support, and to harass opposing team members in the penalty box. Though the infamous Green Men have, sadly, been banned from Canucks games, we like this new trend, and would encourage other fans of the fairer gender to get involved.
In case you’re interested in the actual hockey results, Vancouver is poised to win the finals, leading the Sharks 3-1 in the series, which continues tonight at Rogers Arena. The Western Conference Champion will go on to face the winner of the Eastern Conference Finals for the Stanley Cup. The Boston Bruins lead the Tampa Bay Lightning in that series 3-1.

7 games in the NHL today with 3 complete and 3 underway, with one later tonight ... but first:

Congratulations to Alberta for a 7-6 victory to win the Scott Tournament of Hearts over BC in Curling, and getting the opportunity to represent Canada at the World Championships in Lethbridge next month.

Oh dont count your chickens yet, we still have 4 games left here at home. They have been off the last few weeks. I was really disappointed the last few games however they are showing a lot more discipline this year. Saturday well 2 scores in the final minute was rediculous and we only had 4 guys on the ice as a penalty was called for a guy who fell and hit the net. wtf. Ranford had words with the ref and got a 10 min penalty. Vanc got lucky is all I can say.

Nick Foligno of the Ottawa Senators heard that Boston could use a little help with their goaltending tonight so he decided to lend a hand ... or a face anyway, lol.

Pho 2 Van 1 ... SO
SJ 1 Phi 0

Not a big surprise that Phoenix beat Philly last night since the Coyote's are the hottest team in the league right now and are 9-0-1 in their last ten games and are currently tied for 9th overall with the Flyers.

Vancouver continues to hold top spot overall with 88 points, Detroit is 2nd with 87 and the NYR round out the top 3 with 86 points.

20 games left (less for some) in the regular season and then time to start the long road to the Cup again. April 7th is the last day of the regular season with all 30 teams playing.

Want to see what a wasted hockey ticket looks like ... look at the stunned broad on the phone (to the left) during a play in the corners in the Vancouver/Phoenix game last night and she isn't even aware that there is a hockey game going on.

The blonde to her left has that "I wonder what it would be like to be in the middle of them" look.

Some great moves at the trading deadline for the Bruins! Unless everyone GETS healthy and STAYS healthy AND start to play even to 80% of their potential, those moves will pretty much guarantee that the Bruins stick around in the playoffs for five games in the first round.

Normally I would say you are getting the playoff jitters but in this environment there is so much parity in the league that no team is guaranteed anything at this point. Look at some of the lesser teams that have started to gel as a unit and are steadily moving up the standings. The only team in the Eastern conference that stands out are the NYR that are 9 points ahead of second place Boston and Pittsburgh with 77 points each. If there is a weak link in that conference, it would be 8th place Washington but otherwise it will be a tough job to win a series for any team.

The western conference is a bit more lucky and there are 4 teams running away with points right now and 4 lesser teams that are beatable. Vancouver will have an easier time moving on then will any East team ... as it sits right now.

Vancouver's worst enemy will be to get past Detroit to make it out off the West by the way they are playing right now and those 2 are the cream of the crop in the west but throw St. Louis and Nashville in there too, although if the playoffs started tomorrow, the team playing Phoenix would have their hands full.

Very good observations, JPT.

As much as I hate to say it (I'm only typing, but I'm gagging), the Rangers defense right now could get them to the finals with little sweat. The only thing that I see stopping them would be the same type of injury-wave that has overtaken the B's.

A Vancouver-Detroit Western Division final is shaping up as classic right now.

Gotta run to work.

Later.

Portland beat up on Kamloops last night 5-2 in Portland.

KAM:T. Bozon (06:20 2nd), M. Needham (17:10 3rd)

POR:O. Gabriel (01:35 2nd), S. Bartschi (03:16 3rd), O. Gabriel (03:30 3rd), J. Morrow (11:11 3rd), M. Noebels (18:05 3rd)

Kamloops plays Everett tonight in Washington.

Tri City has moved into 1st place overall with Portland in 2nd and Kamloops in 3rd ... the 1st round for Kamloops, Tri City and Portland should be a cakewalk though.

Detroit took a pretty big hit with injuries too and are without Datsyuk, Ericsson and Lidstrom right now. Vancouver is basically at full strength right now, banged up but still playing.

Boston like you said made a couple blueline additions that take the pressure off the early return of Boychuk. Savard is out for the season and Horton and Peverley are still out indefinitely. New York Rangers are healthy.

Damn ... Phoenix is playing with half their roster on the injury list and are still 9-0-1 in their last 10 games. They lost 5 guys in the last 6 weeks.

Odds of winning the 2012 Stanley Cup ... as of February 13th, 2012:

Boston Bruins 5.50 to 1
Vancouver Canucks 6.50 to 1
Detroit Red Wings 8 to 1
New York Rangers 10 to 1
Pittsburgh Penguins 10 to 1
San Jose Sharks 11 to 1
Philadelphia Flyers 12 to 1
Chicago Blackhawks 14 to 1
St. Louis Blues 16 to 1
Washington Capitals 21 to 1
Los Angeles Kings 25 to 1
Nashville Predators 25 to 1
New Jersey Devils 33 to 1
Toronto Maple Leafs 40 to 1
Florida Panthers 50 to 1
Ottawa Senators 50 to 1
Dallas Stars 60 to 1
Phoenix Coyotes 75 to 1
Minnesota Wild 80 to 1
Tampa Bay Lightning 80 to 1
Buffalo Sabres 100 to 1
Colorado Avalanche 100 to 1
Montreal Canadiens 100 to 1
Calgary Flames 125 to 1
Winnipeg Jets 125 to 1
Anaheim Ducks 300 to 1
Carolina Hurricanes 500 to 1
Columbus Blue Jackets 500 to 1
Edmonton Oilers 500 to 1
New York Islanders 500 to 1

Obviously the last 2 weeks have made that list a lot different but the numbers are still being crunched and a revised list will be posted shortly. An interim revision has:

Vancouver 9/2
NYR 11/2
Detroit 6/1
Boston 15/2
Pittsburgh 9/1
Philadelphia 13/1
St. Louis 13/1
Nashville 15/1

I'm surprised he didn't stay on the ice with his head down til the crowd left. What would you expect from a guy that only makes 3 million dollars a year.

9 games in the NHL last night:

Bos 4 NJ 3 ... OT
Mon 5 Min 4 ... SO
Phi 6 NYI 3
NYR 3 Car 2
Win 7 Flo 0
CBJ 2 Col 0
Cal 4 Pho 2
Van 2 StL 0
Buf 1 SJ 0

In the WHL ... Kamloops beat Everett 3-2 on Wednesday

KAM:M. Needham (13:28 1st), B. Ranford (18:19 1st), B. Gaudet (07:55 2nd)

EVT:R. Petryk (04:55 3rd), J. Winquist (19:23 3rd)

Edmonton 3 Kootnay 1
Calgary 5 Swift Current 4

Tri City plays Portland tonight and this will be the game to watch standings wise along with the Kamloops / Kelowna game.
