A full slate of games Tuesday that saw Boston continue their winning way as they beat LA 3-0.

Toronto broke their losing streak with a win over Carolina 2-1.

Philly is on a nice winning streak as well and took out Washington 5-1.

Vancouver lost to Columbus 2-1 in a SO.

Montreal has won their last 2 games with a 5-3 win over the Islanders since acquiring Thomas Kaberle from Carolina.

Nashville took out Calgary 2-1.

Winnipeg beat Minnesota 2-1 ... which is no easy feat.

Colorado put one in the win column with a 4-3 win over San Jose.

Over winners were NJ, Dallas, Detroit, and Ottawa.

Just a footnote to the Vancouver , Edmonton and Boston fans.

The odds on favorites to win the 2012 Stanley Cup are currently:

Vancouver at 5/1
Boston at 8/1
Philadelphia at 9/1
Detroit at 12/1
Chicago at 15/1

And Edmonton btw is still a longshot at 50/1

Those numbers will change a bit as I post the full board soon.

Anyone that wants to put their money where their mouth is might want to actually put a few bucks on their team with a futures bet while the odds are high for some, as the payout will be a lot higher than if they are near the top of the standings come playoff time and their odds shrink.

Disclaimer: ... that is only my opinion and I do not know where such a thing could be done nor would I do such a thing.

Check out the stick handling skills of this guy Thomas Jurco, a top NHL prospect. The move to turn the goalie inside out at :49 seconds is totally sick, and the skill after that is incredible.

Winnipeg is doing well too with a 14-12-4 record and is 6-3-1 in their last 10 ... with 32 points right behind Montreal.

Hockey Canada has started to make cuts to the 42 man roster at training camp in preparation for the World Junior Hockey Championships and Canada will be hard pressed to put together a team that will challenge for Gold with only 4 players returning from last year as most NHL teams will not release players to play the tournament. Most Countries are in the same boat though and have the same problems so it is pretty much a wash.
Seven players cut from Canada's world junior squad

I already made my wager and it will pay off but as you said, "I do not know where such a thing could be done nor would I do such a thing". I do know that bets haven't closed yet but the closer it gets to the end of the season the less it pays out.

Wings vs. Preds tonight Anyone else wonder why Jimmy Howard is still just a write in for the all star ballot? Kinda annoying to me considering he is having a really good year including the most wins of any goalie in the NHL. Just a mini rant that I thought I would share

Another reason why we need many more women at hockey games.

I feel for you sweety but the problem with balloting is that goalies don't normally garner a lot of votes unless they stand out of the crowd and stand on their head night after night to get noticed outside of the city they play in and Howard has done well this year and even started the season with a shutout against the Ducks. Detroit unfortunately is not a well liked team around the league after having swept the ice with their opponents for so many years to bring home the Cup plus the fact that they have exited the playoffs early in each of the last two years. Chin up though, there is still time left for votes.

Well that was fast, TB just beat Calgary early in OT 5-4. Flames suck.

Shitty news for me and any other Flyers fans ... Chris Pronger is out for the rest of the season and his career looks to be over.

Flyers 4-3 winners over the Habs.

Just a thought but I could see Jerome Iginla (Calgary Flames) fitting into a Flyers Jersey quite nicely.

Blehhhhh I know, they were up 3-1 and blew it by letting Nashville score 3 unanswered goals. A bad penalty and a weird ass bounce and they lose the game I hate Shea Weber too...yuck.

I know the Wings are not very well liked around the league so it is understandable about Howard. Plus this is his first full year he has been consistently good so perhaps next year he will actually be on the ballot instead of just a write in.

As a female hockey player, I appreciate your efforts to further womens hockey

Women's hockey rocks.

Howard will get his time to shine one day in an allstar game but take comfort in the fact that he is a great backstop that has his Redwings tied for 5th overall with 39 points this season and is only getting started.

Good luck guys and I wish you all good health ... but I'm not giving up any of my "rabbit's feet", lol.

WTF ... sad to see that I am not the only one that gets bad news second hand.

Quote:
MONTREAL -- The Philadelphia Flyers came off the ice after a 4-3 win against the Montreal Canadiens on Thursday night feeling pretty good about themselves -- until the media walked in the dressing room and informed the players that their captain, Chris Pronger, would miss the rest of the regular season and playoffs with a concussion.

The team made the announcement during the first period of the game and coach Peter Laviolette was informed of the news just prior to the opening faceoff, but the players had no idea and were somewhat shocked to hear it from reporters.

Shitty for you though is that Vancouver has always been considered a contender and as such has low odds so a big payout isn't in the works but still a nice payday should it come in plus you get the Cup.

I had to say the "don't know" thing as one of my conditions. That seems to be working quite well, lol.

I would like to start my day off on the thread by saying a big "Congrat's" to Phil Kessel of the Toronto Maple Leafs (formerly with Boston) who today is celebrating five years to the day of being cancer free after a battle with that terrible disease. I know his cousin David Cross of the Calgary Flames and have heard nothing but good things about this "standup guy". Last year Phil was the last player picked for the all-star game which he was named the MVP and awarded a brand new car that he donated to a Cancer charity to further research. This year he leads the balloting.

He is tearing up the scoring race this year and is a shining star both on and off the ice. Good on ya Phil.

Most Canadians love Florida to bask in the sun but for the Calgary Flames, they would rather forget being there and dropped their second game in 2 nights in Florida to the Panthers in a SO 3-2 after losing to Tampa Bay the previous night in OT.

Buffalo over Toronto 5-4

Ottawa over Pittsburgh 6-4

NJ over Dallas 6-3

And Chicago over Anaheim 4-1.

Minnesota and Chicago are tied for the overall lead in the standings with 44 points, Philly is third with 43 followed by Boston with 41 and Florida with 40 points.

Fan balloting is well underway for the 2012 All-Star game and every vote counts people.

A new poll asking if fighting should be banned in the NHL has found that 60 % say yes and 40 % say no. Of the 60%, 73% of the women polled said yes (stick to cooking and cleaning then) and the frogs in Quebec were most against it.

Scrapping is a part of hockey as is high emotion during a game and to take fighting out would mean to take emotion out ... newsflash, that isn't going to happen.

This is just my opinion but I think that far to many Goalie's are being "run" this season so far and that needs to change quickly to protect these guys more. I think Tim Thomas of Boston is fair game though, lol.

Aren't they just the best ... and I love the one that said "put it in my five hole Sidney", lol.

The Sabres are doing well and with a 16-12-3 record are currently tied for 6th in their conference with NJ and Toronto but are 4-4-2 in their last ten and need to step it up.

Not bad for a team that declared bankruptcy a few short years ago and almost folded. Danny Gare is still one of my favorite players and I still remember him when he played for the Calgary Centennials before being drafted.

While I do love to cook & am a female...I definitely think fighting should be kept in hockey. Shows the passion of the players & sportsmanship. Any guy willing to take & give punches for their team is a true player in my book.

On a slightly related but also unrelated topic I am also a fan of making checking legal in womens hockey. Checking is a part of the game & it is stupid that men can do it but women can't. Any girl who can't take a hit shouldn't be playing hockey because hockey is a PHYSICAL game!!! A girl can dream...

Wow ... a woman that likes to cook and loves hockey. Will you marry me.

They have experimented with contact minor hockey but at younger levels, the bones are still developing and a bad hit or fall can severely damage the body going into adulthood and "it's not lady like" at the junior women's level supposedly. Unless you make the pro's sweety, you might be SOL but you are welcome to skate with our men's team where we have contact hockey but be careful what you wish for ... it might just come true.

On a sidenote to that, Hayley Wickenheiser (Canadian National Team) played with the Philadelphia flyers in 2 training camps and I once saw her flatten a guy into the boards and lay him out ... fuck we had a good laugh and Bobby Clarke joked about giving her the spot of the guy she dropped (I won't mention his name out of shame).

Ouch ... Boston kicked my Flyers asses 6-0 today.

Nine games under way right now and Was/Col, Edm/SJ have late starts. Will update scores as they become relevant.

PS ... the 2012 Outdoor Winter Classic is only 2 weeks away with NYR/Philly

Habs fire Martin, name Cunneyworth interim coach

Quote:
MONTREAL - Montreal Canadiens general manager Pierre Gauthier made a bold move Saturday morning, firing his head coach and personal friend Jacques Martin and replacing him with Randy Cunneyworth.

For Cunneyworth this is his first NHL head coaching position.

"I met Mr. Martin very early this morning," Gauthier said at a news conference Saturday morning. "I can tell you I didn't sleep much last night."

Gauthier said he has been concerned with how the Canadiens had been playing during the past few weeks, a period during which the team has been treading water with a record of 4-4-4 since Nov. 19.

"The primary reason is that the team is not performing as well as it should," Gauthier said. "Especially in the last few weeks, we didn't really know what was coming out of the box, the way we were losing leads and losing games.

Cunneyworth will be taking over behind the bench as interim coach for the remainder of the season, while Larry Carriere, an assistant to Gauthier, will become an assistant coach.
I wouldn't unpack my bags just yet if I were you Randy.

Vancouver and Toronto are still tied at 1-1 at the end of 1 even though nhl.com says it's 2-1 Van. 2 goals have been disallowed and both goalies are standing on their heads so far.

NJ is up on Montreal 1-0 after 1.

Pittsburgh is up on Buffalo 4-1 after 1.

Detroit is up on LA 4-1 after 1.

Anaheim and Winnipeg are locked 2-2 after 1.

Just a note for Jets fans ... Teemu Selanne (Anaheim) made his return to Winnipeg tonight and the place went nuts and gave him a standing ovation that lasted for a few minutes. They love him there from his Jets days back in the 90's

Pittsburgh is running away with the game with a 6-1 lead over Buffalo after 2.

Detroit is doing the same up 6-2 on LA after 2.

NJ and Montreal are tied 3-3 after 2. Maybe the new Habs coach might start with a win.

Winnipeg is up 4-2 near the end of 2.

Vancouver is up on Toronto 3-2 after 2.

NYR and Phoenix are tied 1-1 after 1.

Just a note on the classy move the Devil's organization made last night. They retired #27 from Scott Niedermayer before the game. Scott is a class act and gave a lot of good seasons to the NJ Devils.
Quote:
NEWARK, N.J. -- Scott Niedermayer spoke with the same type of grace with which he played.

On a night in New Jersey that belonged to him and his No. 27, Niedermayer took several minutes out of his speech to thank so many people, including many from the Devils organization, both alive and deceased, to the training staff, former teammates, ex-coaches, the evening's MC, Mike Emrick -- and his family, even the one that housed him when he first came to New Jersey in 1991 as an 18-year-old.

At the same time, the Devils did all they could to thank Niedermayer, making Friday night at Prudential Center all his as they sent his No. 27 up to the rafters to join Scott Stevens' No. 4 and Ken Daneyko's No. 3 -- not to mention the Stanley Cup championship banners from 1995, 2000 and 2003 that the three of them helped to win.

Other than immortality for his number, the Devils gave Niedermayer a mountain bike, a Tiffany's crystal engraving of the banner that went up to the rafters, a framed No. 27 Devils jersey, a fully loaded 2011 Lincoln Navigator, and the opportunity to speak to the fans that chanted his name on so many occasions at the Meadowlands from 1991 through 2004.
