A woman I know sent me some pics. Her kid is on there.

I can't quite grasp the size of this fucking thing. I get lost trying to imagine the piles of $100 bills it takes to build and run one. Amazing. It's a damn floating air base, a fucking TOWN on water.

It's fucking cool is what it is! I would much rather they use it for a basketball game than for launching airstrikes any day.

I have Navy friends in San Diego and have been on the Vinson a couple times and it truly is an incredible site to see and is a Nimitz class "Super Carrier". Equipped with Gym's to workout, shopping kiosk's and movie theaters and is really like a small city with well over 5000 personnel. I liked this comment the President made at the game.
Quote:
'The tide of war is receding and in just a few weeks the long war in Iraq will finally come to an end,' the President said in his remarks. 'My fellow Americans, our troops are coming home.'
Vice president Joe Biden and his wife Jill Biden co-wrote an editorial piece published Friday where they marked the monumental nature of this year's ceremony since the Obama administration announced that all troops in Iraq home in the coming months. 'Next month, we will end the war in Iraq, bringing all of our troops home by the end of this calendar year. In Afghanistan, our brave forces are transferring responsibility to the Afghans.
Footnote: This is the same Carrier that Bin Laden's sorry ass was thrown from, for his sea burial

2 of my favorite teams, but NC edges MSU out (and in the game, too...)

Apparently wantsomefun, padiddle, Ump and myself do.

It's a novelty to have sporting events in odd locales like this and outdoor hockey games and worth a look ......... and your post was unprovoked.

Exactly what I was going to post. Glad you beat me to it. Same goes to Amas-Veritas for her post directly beneath yours.

This is an awesome thing in my opinion. However, I don't want it to become an annual thing or at least not the same way most annual things go in the world of sports. This was about the vets, not the players or the teams and I want the emphasis to stay on the vets.

I just don't want it to become "Who's playing in the Carrier Classic this year? So and so needs to step it up in the Carrier Classic, etc." This is really the least we can do for our vets and we need to continue to make sure the focus stays on them.

Anybody watch the concert afterwards? I thought Five for Fighting picked the perfect songs of theirs for the situation.

Baller, I totally agree about the emphasis staying on the vets and not becoming a new promotional thing. I didnt watch the concert and only whatched a few minutes of the game because Im a girl and well, basketball just isn't as fun to me on tv. What with my womens ADD and such. I am glad the vets enjoyed themselves though. As a Marine wife and Air Force Brat I know how hard they have it.

Well said. The focus was that it was Veterans Day.

John Ondrasik(Five for Fighting) is a very talented musician and has a bunch of great tunes, and yes very fitting for the occasion. Love the hockey analogy in his title.

Forgive my ignorance but do the vets get any other major celebration like this for them usually? (Besides USO I mean) I honestly don't know and if not then I think they definitely should.

Concerts, a football game, a baseball game, a hockey game, etc. to add to the basketball game would be a start. They could even do it all on Veterans Day or over the week/weekend of it.

And honestly, it was a pretty bad game. Both teams shot for shit. There were some great moments at times though, like Harrison Barnes just flat out going off at times.

As for the pic.. well in JPT's defense, I think it's kind of impossible to not like a pair of big tits combined with a pair of lips facing back at you. But I think that might've been what you were going for in that pic

Right ......... can a thread really be derailed when a beautiful set of tits drops by to post, let's just say the thread takes a breather.

I actually think they get little things here and there. For example I know both Jeff Dunham and Ralphie May have done private base shows strickly for the military/vets only as do some singers/bands. They also get showings of specific movies before they hit the public.

Glad my lips and assets are so well like round here

Right yeah, I meant more along the lines of a big event like that game or like a concert where it's multiple acts, like the kind of events they do on the 4th in Philly and elsewhere for everyone with multiple bands. It just seems to me like the second they get home, all of the big shows of appreciation stop (outside of the areas where the particular soldier(s) is coming home to of course). It's great to have USO tours and things for when they're actually at war but we should be doing more to honor them when they come back home in my opinion. I figured/was hoping that we already were.

I have a feeling air wouldn't be the only naughty thing JPT wants to take in when your avi happens to pop up

Okay, that was the last one. I'll leave the innuendo to you two now :P

I agree about the doing more when they come home thing. I fear though that at times it is a publicity stunt with the Vets as props but an agenda of ratings and money are the real focus. I too believe that at times the lack of public kindness shown to returning Vets is due in part from the "bad taste" the people have for the administration of the day, and that is unfairly taken out on our brave men and women that volunteered btw and did it without a second thought and is always selfless. I have nothing to back that up though and it is just my opinion. Regardless, they have my admiration and respect as well.

as a whole events like this do call attention to active, reserve, and former members of the military community but also turn it all into a fucking circus
that money could have been better spent to educate soldiers and thier families in economic survival and the treatments for PTSD
the VA is not sufficiently funded to handle the current case load and there are no plans to increase such funding

carriers are massive but it takes the actual soldiers to fight the wars
