why do a lot of people put the word 'THE' in front of some countries ?

examples.

if i were going to Australia I would say i am going to Australia.
but if i were going to netherlands i would say ' i am going to THE netherlands'

nobody would say 'i am going to THE spain' but they would say 'i am going to THE ukraine.'

they are all countries so why the word THE in front of some of them ?

why ? random thought.
