For something new, I've started trying out indie games a lot recently. They have a good labor of love feel to them most of the time, and since they are digital distribution they are also inexpensive.

I had read about them for years before buying any, it was a charity thing called Humble Bundle that got me to grab some finally and I am glad I did. Most of the good ones are available through Steam, which is convenient if you already have some Valve products and an account. If you hate that thought, you can also get them direct from the game companies themselves.

Now, some actual GAME names.

The Binding of Isaac - An old school NES style game, patterned on the Legend of Zelda. One life, restart it all when you die, collect powerups, hearts to restore life, and battle rooms of monsters as you work your way down. Each level has a boss to fight to move on. The story is where it gets creepy, definitely not for the kids.

Hamilton's Great Adventure - A nice puzzler, you and your parrot must navigate each level triggering switches and planning routes over breakaway floor tiles to get to the end of each area. Higher scores for racing through and getting it first try, but most levels let you ponder for quite a while if needed.

Osmos - This one would never get on the EA or Activision list, but it is a blast to while away minutes or hours. You are a little round cell thing floating in an arena of other cell things. Most levels have one instruction, Get Big. You can absorb smaller cells and will be absorbed by bigger ones. Each one you absorb makes you grow, and once you reach the size required you can move to the next level. Easy to learn, hard to master.

VVVVVV - Rescue your friends after your spacecraft crashes and you are all scattered around. This one is straight out of Commodore 64 land, blocky sprites and SID style music included. Original Mario Brothers type gameplay, navigate from one end to the other of a level using jumps and the ability to change gravity to avoid obstacles.

Okay, so if you like old stuff GOG.com has Ultima 4, and both Worlds of Ultima games based on that engine for free right now.

I just finished it a couple of hours ago and i totally agree with you.It is THE best game of this year.Loved the intensity, clever use of in-game motion comic style cut scenes and the distortion given to it to highlight max's mental state,Shoot dodge and bullet time, its designing and everything.
But above all what i really liked it, is its advance AI and near perfect realism which makes you believe that you are actually playing something real and not just any other video game.

Hahaha i totally agree with you and i am rather a little bit optimistic regarding red dead revolution, because red dead series is meant to be a western genre and for me revolution only means the civil war.And it will be impossible for them to replace or to sideline John Marston. Lets see what happens.

All i know is one thing, that rockstar has certainly raised the bar and the level of expectation for third person shooters genre which can pose problems for rival companies and to themselves.

I was jazzed to see that Kickstarter got funding for Wasteland 2 and Carmageddon Reincarnation. Those are two of my favorite franchises that have been rotting in publisher hell since no one wanted to take a chance on them.

Oh, and I want to go on record, Elder Scrolls Online is a bad idea and I want it to fail. Leave me some single player RPG goodness, dammit!

I've been sucked into the VG world since I was 4 and played Super Mario Bros./ Duck Hunt on NES (which was all brand new at that time). Its been a lifelong love affair since. I kind of grew up with video games, and what I mean by that is I was so young when NES was out, and kept up with the new consoles as they came out through the years.

Currently playing Twilight Princess and Final Fantasy XII. Stuck on TP, so mainly focusing on FFXII right now.

I've been a gamer since the Atari 2600. I've got the 3 big systems, but mostly I play the 360. I don't play a lot of online games, unless I personally know the people I'm playing with, that way I don't have to deal with the annoying kids who play CoD.

I have a bunch of retro games and each year between Thanksgiving and Christmas, My roommates and I play those. Stuff from the Atari 2600, the NES and games like that. Mostly we do it for the laughs of how bad the graphics are. Or the bad midi music and computer voice. "Red Wizard need's food badly."

I do like what games have become, and interactive movie, with some really great voice work (ok, some suffer from bad acting, but that can make it fun)

Who else is waiting for Halo 4?

ok, you mentioned the evil of Dunk Hunt. Were you one of the many who shot the dog as it laughed at you?

Haven't played the second one yet, but I loved the first one. It has those great moments where you turn an something is right behind you, just watching you. Very creepy.

One of these days I need to play and finish Oblivion and Skyrim, plus the Mass Effects. Just too many games and I have the attention span of a puppy on coffee.

So I just got Beat Hazard, and am discovering I like bullet hell shooters too. I suck at them, but I like them. New video card should be here today, so I can finally get back to gaming out of a tiny window! Yay!
