The nonballer does not come from the mean streets, he actually comes from a nice suburb, he will now say it is being encroached by bad areas, but the issue is he grew up in a nice area with both parents and spent some of his school time in a catholic run fee paying school and not always the local public school, he can't play basketball to a high standard, he is not the tough kid he thinks he is, he is exactly what he rants against and his only outlet is XN and rap music.

At 23/24 he is still in school when his peers are all working, the highest paying job he has had is flipping burgers, and the way he seems to be heading it will peak at "do you want fries with that".

One thing I will say though is that our suburbs are nothing like your suburbs. Your suburbs are outside of cities filled with mostly suburban sprawl. Our suburbs are directly outside of gritty neighborhoods in one of the hardest cities in the US or Canada, and by that I mean like less than ten miles at most, even the nicest suburbs on this side. We don't build sprawl in our fucking cities. My suburb would be inside of the city if we made cities as large in area as you do out there. I've been trying to drive this point home for awhile now. You don't know shit about things out here. We have some of the richest neighborhoods in the US directly outside of some of the most dangerous ones. That's the way shit works around here.

Coming up in a shitty rough neighborhood is not something to boast about. It's something that you reference when having a discussion, it's something that you look back on when you're trying to understand people who are still going through it and it's something that you use to drive yourself forward.

I don't think the fact that I know what cereal with water tastes like, or what it's like to sleep in your winter hat because there's no heat, makes me any more worthy or legitimate than someone who grew up with two parents, a white picket fence and a college fund. I'm genuinely happy for anyone who gets to enjoy a carefree childhood. After all, that's the way childhood should be.

I've been the victim of racially charged attacks. I've been called a stupid white bitch and beaten til I was bloody. Despite the things I've seen, the things I've had done to me, and the things I've taken part in, I still know that others would trade lives with me in a flash. Somebody always has it worse.

It's not about dwelling on what you don't have or complaining about minorities getting your share, it's about looking forward to what you're gonna get and working damn hard to get it. I get a fucking million dollar feeling when I think about how good I'll be able to make life for my future children. Suburban sprawl may be ugly and boring to look at, but safe neighborhoods are a premium idea as far as I'm concerned.
