Just been on the news, NASA have been tracking the storm.

Just starting here and my Roof isn't in the greatest shape ever...

Nevermind I was going to replace it this year anyway.

I hope Stephanie Abrams from the Weather Channel gets assigned to cover the story there.

She looks great in a wet T-shirt.

I think we actually get more tornadoes than the States, they're just not very big ones

The Midlands are often hit by tornadoes, but as SMC says, they are very small in comparison to those in the US

Does that mean not much damage is done to the area it hits or that the storm only hits a small area?

That question makes sense in my head, but I'm not sure if it does to you....?

We had a nasty one go through Kings Heath, Moseley and Sparkbrook a few years back, I actually saw it flash through the local park as I sheltered from the rain. Then I had to get home, shower and rush up to make sure my Local had survived, luckily it had.

I will have you know that if a Tornado rips through the center of Birmingham it could literally do hundreds of pounds worth of damage.

fuck off you fool, everyone knows that joke is referring to the Dudley earthquake.

@NEW most of the tornadoes that come through the Midlands hit in rural areas, so a few sheep get disturbed and the odd milk maid, occasionally they hit the cities and cause what would be classed as minor damage compared to the town killers you get over there.

Yes, sorry I was mistaken.

I did hear that an entire street burned down, a local estate agent said that the property values had increased by 20%

Good luck to all of you across the pond. I happen to live in an area that rarely gets storms like that. Our ravages usually come in the winter. Please make sure you've thought to get what you need before the power goes out. We'll be thinking of you.

Does England have a warning system? I don't live in "tornado alley" it's in the Midwest, but I do know they have sirens specifically to warn residents.

Tens of thousands of pounds worth of improvements!

If a tornado ripped through, say, Easterhouse in Glasgow it would be given a Nobel Peace Prize for services to humanity.

No warning system here Lady.

since ya'll were ta;ling about tornadoes,
i was in wichita falls, texas. april 10 1979, and seen this live,
killed 53 people i believe, knocked out power for a week, was 1/4 mile wide, f5, stayed on the ground for around 15 miles, started at the edge of town, and lifted on the other side.
an extremely bizarre day. there are more on youtube.

What people forget is that those "once-in-how-often" statistics are about how often on average we'll get them, over a long period of time. They assume that because we had one in 1987 there won't be another until 2487, which is stupid. We could have one next week.

Large, dangerous tornadoes are so rare in England, that the cost of repairing the damage they cause when they do happen, is far less than the cost of building and maintaining a warning system.

We don't have measures in place to last for bitterly cold winters or very heavy snowfalls, for the same reason. It's cheaper to deal with two or three random days' of disruption, than to have systems in place that would prevent that disruption. (Particularly since in England, heavy snow might fall in late November, early April, or anywhere in between!)

We have areas in the US that are flood areas....they are rated as 50 year flood, 100 year flood and 500 year flood....

what this means is NOT...every 100 years there is a flood...BUT every year there is a 1 in a 100 chance it will flood....

seems the same as you posted about storms...

Exactly so; but in the UK just as in the USA, stupid people will think that it does mean the former, and that if a 1-in-100-year event occurs today, there won't be another one for the next 100 years.

We do have the same system for flood areas, but I don't live in one.

I think the only warning system we have is the "Broadmoor" alarms to let locals know if a dangerous psychotic as escaped the hospital.

This thread has gone a little wonky - on my subscription feed, it tells me there's a new post by Old Tool that remains unread - but when I click on the thread, there's nothing

Edit - found it after I posted. The way I'm set this was a new page, but I couldn't see it when I scrolled to the bottom of the previous one. Strange.......
