CAW 12 - The Story Writing Phase

Sounds like we are going to have some wonderful entries in CAW 12, I am looking forward to the stories, each should be beyond compare, though I do see myself as fortunate if I even make the top ten with a single vote.

Oh well, tis as they say:

It was the summer of 1869. It was the summer of my life ending in India…

Of course, walking around in India, reading a book, can make life a bit complicated when you do not hear the trumpeting of an elephant who has decided the banana in your hand smells delicious...

From what I've seen, I'd better get busy. I was away for a week, I worked 11pm till 7:30 am, and then made the 75 mile drive home. I've now been awake for about fifteen hours, so I should go to bed.

But NOOOOOOOOOO. I'm pretty sure I'm going to work on my half-done story for a while. Oh, well, if I don't like what I have so far, I can use an idea a friend gave me to change the plot-line. Or I could modify the idea I had in my head for my next non-CAW story. Or I could maybe make an idea I dreamed up sitting in my hotel room this week.

Should I open the doc and work on it?

No, I should go to bed. I don't have to be responsible about anything for the next thirty-one hours. I'll sleep some time. ** goes to My Documents folder "Unfinished Shit" and opens document, filename "Healing". **

Hey WSF good to see you back again.

Thanks for the helpful push you gave me before you left, I did finally decide on an idea for my CAW entry and I've already begun.

In starting my CAW I finally pushed through my writers block I'd been having due to some things going on at home and got back to work on TSB too.

Thanks for the good advise it helped me figure out what I needed to do.

I can't wait to see what everyone comes up with for this next CAW but it's could be the best yet.

That is the best part of writing, when your characters begin to tell you the story and you simply write down what they are saying, that's when you know its working.

Aaaand...there. First draft is finally done.

My work has been getting notably longer of late. Stories that I expect to be short hit the 10k mark before I realize it, and often go over. And whereas in the old days (which is to say, a year ago) I could take a 10k first draft and expect it to be pared down to 9k or 8.5 upon revision by removing extraneous words and tightening up phrasing, lately even major revisions shorten story length by just a few hundred words.

Technically this is all a good thing for me, since "writing short" has long been a problem. I can never write a book because I just can't ever stretch a single idea out that long; my various attempts have all been disasters because they end up being clipped, terse, and sporadic. So it's actually quite an accomplishment for me to take a single plot and, without even having to try, run with it for...17.5k words. That's something I could never have done in the past.

Of course, it poses certain practical problems now, particularly if I expect anyone to, ya know, read it.

I'm not convinced that length is the issue when getting people to read a story. My longest story, 25,000 words, is also by far, by very far, my most well-read one. I think the real determining factor for readability is good writing, good plot, good characters, you see the pattern here. The final part of that equation is matching up what you write with the expected audience.

Do you think if Chaucer, Shakespeare, or Tolstoy wrote erotica here on this site that they'd achieve any higher acclaim than the rest of us? I doubt it. Want an example outside of yourself? Take Clarise. She writes high-level English, so high that despite my being reasonably well-read, I have to consult a dictionary for most every paragraph. Yet, she garners few if any votes here when she enters a CAW. Why? Her writing is perhaps too high-level for the average reader here.

Look at the lady who has won more than anyone here. She writes at a nice level, makes you feel like you are there, in the story, and her characters are quite memorable. And her sex scenes smolder. You WANT to finish her work.

Just my 2 cents, pal. I'll be reading your 17.5k.

Don't worry; it's nothing bad. It's just that summertime seems to always end up busier than I had planned, with vacations, visits from friends and relatives, and all the activities that seem to suddenly pop up when I least expect them. I'm finding very little time when I can sit down and write. Hopefully by the time CAW 13 rolls around, things will be back to normal.

My original idea was turning out to be too "sappy and crappy". It was a tear-jerker romance between a guy who was drafted in '69 and went to Nam, and the girl he left behind. History-based tragedy/romance/sex story wasn't working.

Sex isn't required at all in these Challenges, but history shows that PG-rated stories don't do well in a porn story forum competition.

If you're going to have sex in your story, whether it's romantic or ugly, a build-up is always good. Who's doing what to whom? Where? Why? Maybe it's just me, but I like to have at least some of those questions answered before the first orgasm.

Controversial? As long as you're not violating any forum rules, be as controversial as you like. Rape, murder, torture -- there are lots of people who like reading about that.

Wherever you go with your story, don't worry about too much intro. A lot of readers want to know stuff about your characters, so they can appreciate the naughty parts more.

Its funny you said 2369 the story I was working on for this challenge is taken place in 2269 a hundred years into an ice age. Its just with what I want to do with the story, would take me months to write it all out, with me describing everything for it to make sense. Even what I haven't even put on paper I don't see a sexual scene yet. I know its not required, and I might not even add it in if I ever finish it, but this might end up being a novel. Well only time will tell.

I know what you mean HCB I have a concept I'm working on that I don't know if I can write in the time limit. I'm not used to writing with any boundaries as far as time. I'm doing my best but I've been busy so I hope I don't have to bow out of this competition, I hope not.

I too am having a hard time trying to work out where to place a sex scene without it feeling added in for the sake of a sex scene. I might not have a full blown sex scene but only some innocent kissing and touching.

I can't wait to see all the entries as the reading part last time was great.

Inspiring word WSF but if one might refer one to the mandatory paragraphs which one happens to have with one by a stroke of good fortune,to wit:

It was the summer of '69. It was the summer of ________.

One cannot help but be drawn to the word sand.And for this one sand is either a beach or a desert and given it was an "unmerciful display" the decision went with desert.

It seems to have fostered some "out there " concepts; mine was twelve members of the Youth Group of the Church of Eternal Hope (six pairs of boy girl) leading the way to a spot by a river somewhere in Arizona where the new church is to be built- An Oasis in the desert. And it followed particularly the fortunes of the last and least of the girls, one Esther Peabody who, not surprisingly, hated her name and everything about herself but who does, nevertheless, as happens in my stories somewhat predictably I must admit, fall in love.

Anyway good luck (sincerely) to those who are writing for this challenge.

Honestly, if writers of the class we have on this forum are unable to incorporate two paragraphs into a story then they're not really trying or else we are on the point of shutting down. Nothing wrong with the theme, Horse. If anything, perhaps it leaves too much leeway to interpretation and the warm weather is draining people of ideas.

Speaking for myself if I don't make the dead line for the competition this time it has nothing to do with your conditions. I had my two paragraphs figured out within minutes.

My issues stem more from the summer obligations and the fact that I probably don't write like most people. I tend to write a whole bunch of pages on different stories all in a short time then my brain will kind of short circuit for a while and I can't write anything for days or weeks sometimes.

I was like that in high school too. My old creative writing teacher used to give me a lot of space. I used to play Tetris on the school computer during class and the other students would get upset because he didn't allow anyone else to play games.

When asked why I was given special treatment, he once replied "Because it's how he thinks, when he gets going again he will write three times the amount of work needed to pass this class. Now if you want to do three or four times the required work then feel free to play." none of the other students ever chose that option.

I unfortunately still work that way. I wish I could sit down and write something every day and make it work but it's never been so and right now I've had so much going on my brain is in pause mode.

I really want to get my story done for this CAW because with you, Horse, and Daddycums out of this competition I'm hoping maybe for a second or third place finish!
