They are in essence a daytime soap opera that has a tortured male lead, a virginal female lead some half assed sex = 99% of romance novels.

The beauty of these books are they are easy to put down, you can read with half your brain still asleep or hung over....

I will be reading the book during my vacation in August. So I might come back and change my "review", but I doubt it.

I haven't read it and won't. But I do not begrudge the 22 million copies she has sold.

I think on the Story Site I've developed a bit of a rep as a "disgruntled author" for ripping commercially successful books like Twilight and Hunger Games. But there is a difference. Those two books have been published and promoted by the brick and mortar establishment (Scholastic Books, for the latter!!!) and have been marketed to children as literature, to boost sales and spillover into a marginally literate adult mainstream market. That is why I rip them. For the hypocrisy, and the sheer audacity.

As to E.L. James? Shades has arisen all on its own, from the online fanfiction cesspool. I won't read it, because I'm not into that sort of thing, but I wish her sincere congratulations and all of the success she can get out of it.

I guess I didn't realize, maybe super naive on my part, that these books were being heralded as literature. I thought they were what I called when I was young... "fun reading". Are schools not pushing the classics anymore? One of my favorite books was "The Count of Monte Cristo". So much in fact that when I was in a restaurant and there was a monte Cristo sandwich, I ordered it.

I have to say I liked the book more than the sandwich!

I haven't read any Twilight, Hunger Games or Harry Potter books and I truly have no desire to see the corresponding movies.

Maybe I am just getting old. . The "teeny bopper" books/ movies/ movie stars just seem incredibly stupid to me. If a girl doesn't know how to get out of a car without flashing her crotch to everyone.... There is no help for the young.

Oh he'll, I'm turning into the cranky old lady on the street!.

There have been rumors of this being on the fast track for a motion picture. It is rumored that Emma Watson is in negotiation for the female lead.

When you look at the actual ratings, it turns out that the vast majority give it 5 stars OR 1 star. Zero stars isn't an option So it's one of those love it or hate it books. This is from one of the reviews:

"About half way through the book, I looked up the author to see if she was a teenager. I really did because the characters are out of a 16 year old's fantasy. The main male character is a billionaire (not a millionaire but a billionaire) who speaks fluent French, is basically a concert level pianist, is a fully trained pilot, is athletic, drop dead gorgeous, tall, built perfectly with an enormous penis, and the best lover on the planet. In addition, he's not only self made but is using his money to combat world hunger. Oh yeah, and all of this at the ripe old age of 26! And on top of that, he's never working. Every second is spent having sex or texting and emailing the female character. His billions seem to have just come about by magic. It seriously feels like 2 teenage girls got together and decided to create their "dream man" and came up with Christian Grey.

Then come the sex scenes. The first one is tolerable but as she goes on, they become so unbelievable that it becomes more laughable than erotic. She orgasms at the drop of a hat. He says her name and she orgasms. He simply touches her and she orgasms. It seems that she's climaxing on every page.

Then there's the writing. If you take out the parts where the female character is blushing or chewing her lips, the book will be down to about 50 pages. Almost on every single page, there is a whole section devoted to her blushing, chewing her lips or wondering "Jeez" about something or another. Then there's the use of "shades of". He's "fifty shades of @#$%% up," "she turned 7 shades of crimson," "he's ten shades of x,y, and z." Seriously?
I'm in the middle of reading this book now and I have to say this is pretty accurate. I got it for free and I hate to put the author down but I'm very glad I didn't pay for it.

I liked the Story Of O but it was too far out there for me. I could never understand why she was so committed to Rene when it seemed obvious he could have cared less. It just irritated me. As far as graphic sex, I liked Panic Snap by Laura Reese. She explores many of the same taboo stuff and perhaps even a little more.

I couldn't get through the whole book! Too many spelling errors! She repeats a lot of her statements as well.. I don't know. It was as if she was trying too hard to be visualizing. Soo many errors! where was her editor!!??

I've downloaded it to my iBooks, however I'm having a serious struggle trying to get through the first book. I normally read forensic novels so this is very different. I downloaded it because all my friends were raving about it, I must admit what I've read so far does not fill me with great hope for the rest of the book.

I've read all three books.

They weren't very well written, and the storyline had it's issues but I found the books entertaining.

My main issue with the book is the fact that it's all about how she got him to change his ways from being dominant. It also uses the excuse of his trouble childhood to explain his need to be dominant. Not all people need a reason, or some deep psychological issue to enjoy being dominant in a sexual relationship!

Also, the books started to get rather repetitive. They would fight, she would get in trouble, and he'd save her, and they'd fuck.

I wouldn't recommend them to everyone. There are much better erotic novels around!

50 Shades of diarrhoea, would be a more correct title.

I haven't read it - it sounds like the kind of thing that would make me cringe...it'll be like my literary Titanic

OMG hilarious!

I'm also in the boat of heard it's poorly written and will therefore skip it. In the age of Facebook, Twitter and how connected we all are, shit spreads like wild fire so much faster even if it's scheiße. Anything can go viral.

Ocht, she told me! It's nothing to be ashamed about. Well, only the fact you're reading such a shite book.
