I did not lose anyone in the shooting but I did know a few of the people involved and one of them is still in critical care at the hospital. I agree with some of the intelligent comments made. We should not take away gun rights, but they should be regulated better. For instance the selling of guns at gun and knife shows which are so abundant in Colorado. As well as there should have been something in place to warn people that one person was buying so much ammunition in such a short time span. I also agree that if people in the audience would have been allowed to carry a gun that someone could have tried to get a shot at this person to slow or stop him. And there was an on-duty police officer stationed outside of the theater as there are at almost all of the major movie theaters across the Denver area. That is the reason the police responded so quickly because an officer was there and called in on top of all of the 911 calls. But this tragedy can happen anywhere and a similar event will happen again somewhere else. But the government needs to get on the ball with regulation and enforcement of those regulations to make it safer for all of us that are not trying to destroy the world.

Our suffering at the hands of these mass shootings doesn't only stem from lack of adequate gun control; it comes from the fact that we do a horrible job in treating those with mental diseases, and don't do nearly enough to prevent them from hurting others.

Does anybody remember Seung-Hui Cho, the Virginia Tech killer? Close to a year before he killed 32 people, he had been found to be "mentally ill and in need of hospitalization", but instead of committing him, the judge handling his case recommended he be treated as an outpatient, a status which, among other things, allows one to buy guns; it certainly was the case in Virginia.

I'll bet dollars to roses that this one was originally branded as a potential danger somewhere along the line as well, but slipped through the cracks just like Cho.

david koresh was flagged because they saw the ammo purchases were more than personal use numbers (normaly no more than 100 rounds per month) and his gun purchases were way above what the state of texas allows

also look to that more the fault that needs to be allocated to the theater he opened a fire door and no alarm was sounded?? he parked his car behind the theater near a fire door in a restricted area and noone questioned it????

stop blaming this on mental illness and guns this was a matter of 1 individual that made a choice

I hate to tell you this but when a friend of mine was shooting competitively, he and his peers were burning through between thirty and fifty thousand rounds of ammo per year. Sometimes even more. they would shoot so much that they would have to replace worn out pistols and rifles as often as twice a year. Its not at all uncommon to see non competitive people who use up as much as a thousand rounds per month and at one point I was going through over a thousand rounds per month. As it is I run through about three hundred rounds a month. Sure, there are a lot of shooters that only use a few boxes of ammo a year, but there are an awful lot of people who shoot competitively and use a lot more ammunition than this guy bought, and even people who dont shoot competitively. Large ammunition purchases are in fact very common. Thats why so many outlets sell ammo by the case (between 500 and 1000 rounds per case) I have about two thousand rounds in my home right now. And lets not forget about people who handload, which includes most, but not all competitive shooters.

Then there are the class three firearms owners out there. For those who dont know what class three firearms are, they comprise a group of weapons that require that the person first be federaly registered to own them and then each weapon must be federaly registered and may only be transfered between a buyer and a seller through a federaly licensed dealer and there is a federal tax stamp ($200) that goes with each weapon. Class three firearms are machineguns, submachineguns, short barreled rifles and shotguns as well as a host of other weapons such as breach loading cannons, grenade launchers and so forth. It is in fact legal to own just about anything you want as long as you have th right paperwork.

Class three firearms however are regulated federaly and require extensive background checks and every detail must be adhered to. But if you happen to live in one of the many states that allows class three firearms ownership such as Oregon, and you happen to own a selective fire Uzi or a belt fed machine gun, you are understandably going to use up a whole lot of ammunition in an extremely short period of time.

Just a quick little factoid about class three firearms...of all the fully automatic weapons in the U.S., less than half are owned by the military, police and government agencies. The rest are privately owned by regular people. There have been since 1963 exactly two incidents involving legaly owned class three firearms in the U.S. and one of them was commited by a police officer who took issue with his ex wifes boyfriend in the mid 1970s. I have long been a proponent of a system like the federal firearms system for managing who gets to own ANY firearm because the system has worked and worked very, very well. And for those who think the government has been intrusive or somehow obnoxious about people owning these weapons, I have never heard anyone complain that Uncle Sam has ever gotten in their face about buying a gun or ammunition.

Large ammo purchases arent a red flag. Buying several firearms in a short period isnt a red flag either. What is a red flag is someone who has never owned a gun befor buying large lots of both ammo and weapons. Thats a red flag that deserves some attention. And under the federal firearms rules it would have recieved the attention it deserved.

It was also stated by the police that he bought the guns from the shop in person over a couple of months.

but I've not kept up to date with where their investigation is at so maybe they've changed their statements recently.
