Sensible Discussions?

How long does it take for a thread that starts off being a sensible, intelligent discussion to decend into a squabble between spammers and trolls?

I've had a good look through the threads and it seems the answer is 'not very long at all'.

Can anybody tell me why?

Having had a good look through the threads I can see where you're coming from. I can accept poor grammar, bad spelling and the like, but what I cannot abide is people who make moronic posts just for the sake of spoiling it for others. That really, REALLY pisses me off!

at times i do use poor grammar and misspell words and i do not use puncuation
i have never attacked anyone without provocation and i do not enjoy doing so
there are many here that feel that they have the right to blast anyone whose oppinion differs from thiers
and for them normaly it try to overlook it but if it directly aimed towards me i do react in kind

for me gun control is a hot issue because i am a marine corps vet and am an active shooter, but i am responsible; the cahnces of me killing people out of anger or a demented rage are nill

and no i do not trust any person in politics i dont care what party they are representing, i have relatives in the senate and i know that they are corrupt; my 1st wife was related to the bush family and even she said they were all idiots

perhaps the real reason is the loss of personal responsibilty

We need to improve the quality of discourse here. The members of my Friends' List and I can't lift the standards without more assistance.

Unfortunately, many prospective posters with well endowed minds and excellent taste take a brief look around. They are sickened by the crude vulgarity and inferior intellectual standards that too often reign here, so they never come back.

The debate seems to have been sidetracked into one on whether we should have 'intelligensia' site, which is not at all what I was advocating.

I would like to see threads on interesting, sensible subjects be allowed to progress without the flaming and stupidity that has spoiled so many threads before. So many people here ARE interesting, have had interesting experiences and have interesting opinions, views and ideas to share with the forum community.

I wonder, though, how many are with-holding those aspects of their character and personality because they feel it's just not woth their effort because of the 'moronic minority' who spoil things?

Most of the time it's fun to just fuck around on here calling each other fuck tard, but it's also nice to participate in the odd intellectual exercise or friendly debate. But you have to be careful who you debate with, you never really know who you're going to offend. I will of course vote for Obama too. He is not the Second Coming of Franklin Roosevelt I wanted. Nevertheless, to paraphrase Donald Rumsfeld: you don't get to vote for the president you want, you get to vote for the president you have.

I would rather have an incompetent affirmative action president with the right intentions than a highly competent vulture capitalist who was born rich, and became much richer by firing people, appropriating their incomes, and avoiding taxes.
