I'm glad someone put up a thread about this because its a pretty big deal I think. And I know we've had rovers on Mars before but not like this one. And not for the express purpose of trying to find evidence of life.
I'm kind of excited to see just what all they can come up with.

I remember when we landed on the moon, watching Neil Armstrong step out onto the lander pad, and thinking what a great thing we had accomplished.
After Apollo though it wasn't new territory or new progress, just doing the same stuff around and around and around. Now, this is something new. Maybe we'll finally get back to really exploring stuff. Reminds me of my first trip to Xanthidia. Talk about exciting!

On a more serious note. Here is a pic of Curiosity Rover suspended on it's parachute minutes before landing as taken by the Mars orbiter HiRISE. Imagine the math involved calculating the landing sequence to occur just when HiRISE would be over head to snap that pic.

I for one am impressed that NASA managed to get that thing down in one piece. The Rube Goldberg system of entering Mars atmosphere and landing was way too complicated compaired to other successful landings. I was shocked to hear that the new rover didnt turn into a trash strewn crater on the Martian lanscape with little wheels sticking out of it. I would say well done but it seems more like they just lucked out more than anything else. And this time they didnt get confused between feet and meters. An important step forward in the safety of future Martian missions.

We will get there soon one day. Robert Zubrin, well over a decade ago built a working prototype device that takes carbon dioxide from the atmosphere (95% of the atmosphere on Mars is CO2 by the way) pressurises and stores it (at the same temperatures found on the Martian surface) mixes it with a small amount of hydrogen (which you would have to take along) in the presence of a nickel catalyst to make methane and water, which are then easily separated. This is an exothermic reaction and therefore requires no energy source to fuel the reaction. The prototype then used electrolysis to produce oxygen which can be cooled and stored and the hydrogen is recycled to continue the reaction with the carbon dioxide. When it is time to come home Methane + oxygen is a pretty damn good rocket fuel. This could be sent ahead many years before the mission, Instead of the astronauts having to sit around on Mars waiting to build up a supply.
This prototype uses extremely simple technology, it is not doing anything magical. In fact Zubrin built it and he is not even a chemical engineer.

.......Shooter thought it might be fun to visit Curiosity and play a little joke on the people of Earth. He was going to put Curiosity on blocks and see how long it took the engineers to figure it out.
But when he got there a Martian cop was demanding to see Curiosity's license and registration. It seems spinning donuts is frowned upon on Mars. Shooter is pretty sure Curiosity was going to be towed to the impound crater. So Shooter came back, but he may try again later.
