Ohio Secretary of State Jon Husted, facing heavy criticism over uneven voting hours that appeared to benefit Republicans, Wednesday ordered all 88 county boards of elections to stay open the same hours this fall.

Husted’s directive ordering all election boards to standardize their schedules after early absentee voting begins Oct. 2 sets up the first election in Ohio history with uniform statewide hours.


But while Husted’s order mandates limited extra evening voting hours, it will prevent boards from opening on weekends as many did in the 2008 presidential election, when tens of thousands of Ohio voters cast early in-person absentee ballots.


Husted, a Republican, apparently acted to quell a growing national controversy over disparities in voting hours that seemed destined to give the GOP a significant edge in November. He had been widely attacked since The Enquirer reported 10 days ago that he had cast tie-breaking votes blocking extra voting hours in major urban areas that traditionally favor Democrats even as Republican-leaning counties extended their hours.

On Friday night’s episode of “The Rachel Maddow Show,” the MSNBC host explained that the state’s last three days of early voting, traditionally a time when churches and other urban community groups mobilize voters, have been canceled by Jon Husted, Ohio’s Republican Secretary of State. And that will mean longer lines in Democratic-leaning cities come election day.


President Barack Obama’s campaign has sued to overturn Husted’s decision, which he justified to a conservative radio host by saying, “We’re not 7/11.”



As if that weren’t enough, the times for polls to be open during early voting has also turned into a partisan meltdown, with Republicans supporting extended hours and weekend voting in conservative-leaning areas, but closing them early and restricting them to just five days a week in more liberal communities.


“Each county’s election board in Ohio’s 88 counties is evenly split between Republicans and Democrats,” Maddow explained. “In counties that tend to vote for the Republican candidate, like Warren and Butler counties, where John McCain won in ’08 by big margins — in those counties, Republicans and Democrats on the elections boards are voting together to allow early voting on nights and weekends. So that means more voting in Republican counties.


“But in the counties that tend to go Democratic, like Cuyahoga and Franklin and Summit, where Barack Obama won by huge margins in 2008, the Republicans on those election boards are voting against early voting on nights and weekends. And guess who gets the break for the tie votes in those counties?”


None other than Jon Husted.



“He is personally intervening to make sure there are fewer early voting hours on nights and weekends in Democratic counties, while there are more early voting hours on nights and weekends in Republican counties,” Maddow concluded.

Actually there was a discussion about FOX's ratings in another thread. They cater to the conservative market. No one else does. So basically the ratings are split between Fox and not-Fox. Naturally Fox is the highest because they really don't have anyone to split their conservative audience with. So CNN, CNBC, MSNBC & CurrenTV split the non-conservative viewers. MSNBC goes for the progressive viewers and has the highest ratings of the 4. CNN tries to be balanced. CurrenTv goes for the liberal audience as well, but they have so few viewers they're not really a major competitor for anyone. Then of course, there are people that just watch broadcast news.

In a word, YES. It is almost impossible to be a truly objective reporter. Even if the original report is objective it must go past editors and producers before getting published or broadcast. What the public sees might look quite different than the original report. This happens on both sides of any story.
