I guess I am afraid that if I ever achieve happiness; I will not know who I am or what to do with myself. At the same time, being sad has led me to a life of depression, self-isolation (which is why I spend a lot of time on chat sites,) and panic attack; which are the absolute worse...

It has gotten progressively worse with time. Medications help, but I don't always take them because they make my head feel strange; and I feel as though I can die instantly at any moment...

I remember breif moments of happiness; but no true happiness. Do you know why I am afraid to walk over the Brooklyn Bridge?? I fear I may have a panic attack and instantly jump off of it. Is that normal...??

Yes, that is incredibly normal. I have had the urge to jump off high places since I was a Kid as have millions of other people.

I suppose you never had a panic attack?? It is sheer terror! Due to traffic, we got stuck on the GW Bridge last year for over an hour. At about the 45 minute mark, my girlfriends had to hold me down so I would not jump out of the car and run across the bridge to land...

It is not a fun experience; and my shrink has been unable to cure my fear. I just wish I was not so fearful at times. I also panic when the elevator stops at my floor; and for those 2 seconds, I have to wait for the doors to open. At times I think they will not. So now, I take the steps...

Why would your shrink want to cure your fear? He/She wouldn't get paid if they fixed you, it makes no sense at all.

You describe symptoms of life, nothing more. We all have voices in our heads, they are what kept us safe for thousands of years.

You just need to sort out when to listen to them is all.

If you go on youtube, and type in 'the bridge' they have a documentary on people jumping from that bridge!! So many people jump; that they had set up 24 hour cameras. My friends often think I am going to jump; but I would rather jump in front of a train ~ much more efficient...

Depression is a medical condition, like diabetes or high blood pressure. Just like those two, it can be treated (your results may vary ), and just exactly like those two, it can ruin or end your life if it's left untreated.

If what you have said is accurate, you could benefit from help. It sounds like you're already seeing a doctor, but if the meds he gives you don't work, or have unpleasant side effects, you, as the patient, have the right to request other treatment from your doctor, or to go find a new one.

You may also benefit from a support group. Google what you think is "wrong" with you or the diagnosis your shrink gave you.

Do it. You'll be surprised at how easy it is to "deal with" being healthy.
