I have to agree with Don though I have gotten into the habit of using "Nominate" as others have. Though I think in my own case its because I distrust my own judgement.
We have a list so that people don't have to scroll through 32 pages to get their authors. I may quibble with one of your sentences: "We have a STORY REVIEW thread to say we LIKE a writer or a story." actually this thread is for the writers that one's for the stories. there seems to be a bit different mindset over here than over there. over here its perfectly acceptable to say "hey guys you got to check out so-and-so he/she is such a good writer if you like [insert genre here] stories." where as over there something that succint doesn't motivate (me) people to read the stories... I think the term 'review' implies something more than the term 'recommend'. and of course a recommendation doesn't have to go through nomination, seconding, and voting a recommendation just is.
That thread also has a quick review thing made by me and I'll try to keep up with it like once per page but I've been in a bunch of other stuff recently (however if DC wants to hijack that responsibility/honor/hassle he's more than welcome to it, my own attempt seemed amateurish).
and on a quasi unrelated note don't you think finishing off your posts with "Get with it!" might strike some as incindeary, or even dickheadish... some of the time you say somethings like that and I don't think you mean it that way I'm just pointing it out.

This thread is a listing (ergo: list) of writers who have, for one reason or another, been recommended by readers for the entertainment of their peers. They have been found to be worthy of recommendation and recommendation only.

If anyone wants to set up a championship of authors thread, that is their business. This thread is for recommendations - not consensus.

As for the Story Review thread - have you ever read a 'review' in the newspaper (or TV guide)? A review is what you think of a story. It could even be a bad review.

Review - good or bad story and why you think so.

Recommendation - someone wants others to read stories from this author so they may also enjoy.

I am with Ejls and Don on this, but please avoid being drawn into a petty argument, when you already know the truth about the thread.

And to Elaken, if you wish for a more diplomatic nomination system, then go right ahead and make a new thread, it will likely be a success, but do not presume to convince others with claims on how something has "Morphed", when it has been stable for the last year, longer then many of us have been on this site.

Can you point out when it morphed exactly?

Not to be funny, but when I arrived here I read every page of this thread with great interest and it is, always has, and always will be, a thread to recommend writers who you enjoy. I myself have made three recommendations, those three names were never seconded and some have even stated that they've read, and not enjoyed the writings of those I've placed on the list.

While I personally do see being on the list as a "prize" and wear the lovely sig badge you sent over to me with pride, I don't see myself as the member of a group of writers who are above an beyond those not on the list. I'm just lucky enough to have caught Don's attention on the forum and received a recommendation for my very first story. Do I feel pressure to make sure all the stories I submit live up to that standard? Yes. Do I always pull that off? No... But that's life.

It's about who's been found to be entertaining and arousing by someone, who feels that writer may appeal to others. It's not about who's the best.

My mistake, I appologise Don. To be honest, I rarely come here other then to make recommendations. I prefer to stumble across the hidden gems myself, it makes them a little more surprising

You are correct in all. The list says nothing about who is best or even better. It's just a list.

I think I must be confused. I read the first few pages of this thread when I first came here, and then i skipped to the last few pages. It seems to me that it HAS morphed into something of an honor, which you, yourself say it is. And in fact, there are several writers who are now sporting this logo. If it is simply a list of writers who have caught the eye of someone, then why even bother with a list? The simple truth of the matter is that EVERY writer on this site has caught the attention of at least ONE person, no matter how bad of a writer they are. So, eventually, if this thread keeps on with nothing more than a recommendation, it seems to me that eventually every single writer on this site could potentially wind up on this list. If it's not about pointing out the best of the best, then why bother? i don't want a list of 'recommended' writers that is full of shit stories simply because one person thought they were good.

And right now I'd say that about 90% of the writers on this list suck and that 90% of the people who recommended them wouldn't know a good writer, or story, if it bit them in the ass.

But that's just my opinion.

I agree with you and I love erotica, I have to go to the Story Site so I don't have to browse through the insest or beastality. I avoid coming to this section of the forum due to the majority of the stories dealing with subjects I do not agree with.

The original purpose of the list was to provide a list of links. The contents of the thread distilled down to just the names of the authors that people enjoy reading and where to find them. In fact, it was originally just something I came up with for myself to give me a set of bookmarks to the stories that I might want to come back and read later. I figured others might appreciate those same bookmarks, so I posted it. The list is not the purpose of the thread, but simply a byproduct.

Yes, we'll congratulate people for "making the list" but really we're just congratulating them for having a fan. The thread would continue just fine without the list itself.

Yes, sometimes the recommendations are vague, and I have to make a judgment call. I've left people off the list that were mentioned because the person who mentioned them didn't really sound like they were endorsing them. And sometimes people recommend an author from a single story, which I think is a little premature but nevertheless I include them on the list. Would I mind it if people were a little more "official" in their recomendations? Not at all. But I don't think there needs to be an extended process for getting on the list.

If there were, I'm afraid I would have to resign as de facto keeper of the list, because I wouldn't want that responsibility. Occasionally reading back over the recent threads and looking for endorsements is fine. Counting them up to see if they reach a certain threshold or making sure the recommender dotted their i's and crossed their t's is just too much work.

In short, I will keep maintaining the list of all writers who have been recommended in this thread as long as it's appreciated. If someone wants to make a competing list with more rules, I have no problem with it. I just don't think this is the place. Another thread, perhaps?

I'm sorry, are you being forced to read those stories that you don't like? Is this some form of insane dictatorship where you free will and right to click away from something you dislike has been taken away from you?

You cannot please all of the people, all of the time.

Some people will love, some will hate, others just won't react at all, but I think everyone on the list so far has enough of a "fan base" to be worthy of being recommended to the masses.

I doubt the whole writer base will end up on the list, simply due to the fact that those that find the shit stuff (and I mean really fucking awfully written) to there tastes, probably don't come on the forum anyway, and certainly not into this section.

A portion of our readers (don't know how many. I assume more than 50%. And not my readers but everyone elses) view the stories through the stories site. So they won't see your sig unless they go and search for you on the forum, which makes the sig addy a little bit useless. But it is effective for those who roam the forums looking for wank material.
