Whitey, unfortunately, I have no 'links'; I am an LP/CD guy.

I will ay, for starters, that I regularly cue up Eric Alexander's "Wives & Lovers" track from the New York Calling album...

I didn't know Diana did a concert with a full orchestra. Burt Bacharach wrote some excellent tunes.

Flamenco Sketches
Bill Evans, Miles Davis, et. al.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Tpvpyb-PXM0

From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

"Flamenco Sketches" is a jazz composition written by American jazz pianist Bill Evans. It is the fifth track on Davis' 1959 album Kind of Blue, the best-selling jazz record of all time, and an innovative experiment in modal jazz.
The song has no written melody, but is rather defined by a set of chord changes that are improvised over using various modes of the major scale of each tonality. Each musician separately chose the number of bars for each of the modal passages in his solo. Davis gets credit for the song form, but Evans is credited with the opening 4-bar vamp over Cmaj7 and G9sus4, which is the opening theme to his ballad improvisation "Peace Piece." Because of the presence of this vamp, "Flamenco Sketches" is usually played as a ballad. The modes used in "Flamenco Sketches" are as follows:

I was looking for a youtube of Dianne Reeves singing "One For My Baby" in the movie "Good Night and Good Luck"...but alas, I can't find one.

That entire film score is classic 40s jazz...marvelous!

Check out the Flamenco Sketches song, it starts out the same as Peace Piece, except the bass player plays the left hand part for Bill Evans.

The playing in the left hand is very reminiscent of Satie's Gymnopedies, but the improvisation in the right hand provides a clear distinction. I love Satie, by the way...one of the Gymnopedies was played at my wedding.

Goodbye Pork Pie Hat
Charles Mingus
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=MS7ob...eature=related

Mingus, a great jazz bass player, wrote this beautiful song in memory of Lester Young (aka Prez) who was the lead tenor saxophonist for Count Basie before he went solo. He ended his own life by drinking himself to death.

I read somewhere that Sinatra recorded this song not too long after he broke up with Ava Gardner. It is said he did the recording in a single take, and left the studio in tears. You can hear every drop of anguish in his voice.

I'm going to have to look into more of Satie's work. I'm mostly familiar with him from his time with Blood, Sweat, and Tears.
