I know it sounds silly, but BS&T was originally intended as a serious jazz/rock fusion band. Listen to some of their work on the first 3 albums and it comes out. Their version of "Symphony/Sympathy for the Devil" has a lot of good stuff, and "Sometimes in Winter" sounds a lot like the Evans composition mentioned above. As a kid growing up on Rock in the '60s, BS&T was my introduction to jazz.

Louis Armstrong was my intro to jazz. But, still, I grew up listening to Chicago and BS&T.

Do you mean that ending on "Spinning Wheel" where they play the German folk/blues song on the flute called "Ach Du Lieber Augustine"?

How High the Moon
Les Paul and Mary Ford
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=lJRyZfIUa0I&NR=1

This song has standard chord changes that many jazz players like to improvise on. Even rock players like Jimi Page dig Les Paul's guitar playing on this tune.

*laughing* No, but that was pretty funny. I think it was a steam calliope!

They added a countermelody to Satie's original melody. If you listen to both of them you'll hear it.

Stella By Starlight
Anita O'Day
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=8UZ0xqdP2rw

This song was originally written by the composer Victor Young in the 1940s for a ghost movie called "The Uninvited". It was originally an instrumental piece for the piano. It eventually had words added to it and also was turned into a bebop standard.

I like the Springfield version better than the Krall version, probably because I grew up listening to it. I also like the Bacharach instrumental version with a mellow trumpet below. The music finally starts one minute into the video clip.

Mercy, Mercy, Mercy

This is the original version Joe Zawinul wrote when he played with Cannonball Adderley Quintet. Later, the Buckinghams made this song a hit record by adding lyrics.

One of the best things I have seen/heard in my life was Dave Brubeck at the Blue Note in NYC...He was amazing. His age showed as he was helped onto the stage...the minute he started playing it was like he was 20 yrs old again...wow!
