Calling All Writers, Chapter 24 – An Affair to Remember

The English language is not the easiest thing to learn. We have these words that although are spelled differently, are all pronounced the same (red, read; too, two, to). Take the word “affair”.

Affair – noun
* anything done or to be done; anything requiring action or effort; business; concern: an affair of great importance.

* affairs, matters of commercial or public interest or concern; the transactions of public or private business or finance: affairs of state; Before taking such a long trip you should put all your affairs in order.

* an event or a performance; a particular action, operation, or proceeding: When did this affair happen?

* thing; matter (applied to anything made or existing, usually with a descriptive or qualifying term): Our new computer is an amazing affair.

* a private or personal concern; a special function, business, or duty: That's none of your affair.

* an intense amorous relationship, usually of short duration.

* an event or happening that occasions or arouses notoriety, dispute, and often public scandal; incident: the Congressional bribery affair.


* a party, social gathering, or other organized festive occasion: The awards ceremony is the biggest affair on the school calendar.



Your challenge, should you choose to accept it, is to write about an affair that was remembered. Perhaps it’s one that is thought of fondly. Perhaps it’s one remembered with fear or sadness. Perhaps it is an affair that was kept buried for years, but a chance experience floods your main character with memories.

The rules are simple. All entries will be anonymous. You may enter one solo entry, but if you wish to write a second, you must utilize a partner. Entries will be submitted June 20 and 21. Please PM me when you’re ready to submit and I will send you the email address to use.



Anonymous means just that. Only you, your writing partner, your proof reader and I will know who wrote which story. No campaigning allowed. The reading period and number of votes will be dependent on the number of entries.



So you see? You have nothing to fear but fear itself. You know you have a story inside you, so write it. Come on, I double dog dare you.

My initial reaction?

 

Hmmm. Okay... This is going to take some thinking.

I've never had an affair, but I've beet to affairs. I think an affair of this sort should be quite the affair! So my affairs should be in order before this affair, you know... to keep everything fair.

I think I just forgot my own middle name!

 

Intriguing.

Writing about an infidelity or love affair seems too obvious--but writing about one of the less provocative definitions of the word seems like it's not making the most of the opportunity. As usual, you want something that departs from the theme (or the most likely interpretation of the theme) juuust enough to be interesting but not enough to lose focus. That's how I like to do these things, anyway. This will require a little finesse.

 

Well, I was right about the affair, but not the definition.

 

Just to make sure, this one doesn't have to be real, unlike the last CAW. Though I'm assuming you could use reality if you wanted.

 

Idea forming. Must resist. Cannot lose track of writting in other stories. Must resist. Resistance is futile. You will join the collective.

 

I just got two interesting ideas after a quick Googling with the right search term. Not sure I'll use them.

 

Now this one sounds like something fun.
Writing about a few different kinds of affairs... And a kinky twist.

 

Damn, am good guy no affairs to fit theme, the CAW needs my weirdness to keep it super interesting *sigh*, got nothing H E L P ! ! ! !

 

Remember, an affair doesn't have to be sexual. A party is sometimes called an affair. So is a theater or movie premiere, a music or arts festival, a fund-raising dinner, even an awards ceremony. It could be a fantasy, cybersex, or a memory. An affair could be a swearing-in ceremony for a new mayor or cop, a decoration ceremony for a war hero, or the coronation of a queen. People approaching the end of life should tidy up their affairs. Diplomats deal with affairs of state, and corporate giants deal with affairs of business. Criminals and terrorists target those same affairs. There are guards, staff, and sometimes pickpockets at formal affairs.

Give it a couple days. This can be a pretty broad theme.

So far ideas hasn't been a problem for me, I've got a few strong contenders, and a list with nine ideas (some of them very tenuous).

I've never collaborated on a story, anyone want to work with me on a second?

 

Wow! I have been racking my brains till they hurt. So far there are zero ideas coming my way!

Ugh! Guess I will have to wait and see if inspiration will strike!

...for the CAW. I have no idea myself what I will write about, but I love the concept.

Correct Stex, this can be pure fantasy. Now, if any of you experienced a cheating spouse, then by all means use that as inspiration. And for others of you, perhaps your last state affair at the White House might fit in.

 

I tend to avoid the wrods "cheating" and "affair" when referring to how I met the wife. So I'll avoid that theme this time.

I think three of my ideas are going to get written whether they're entries or not. I don't know what it is about the CAW it just gets into my brain and won't let go.

 

I see the CAW is still alive and kicking.

(BOWS LOW TO EJLS(though knowing the dirty old man that is me, I am probably trying to look up her dress) nice panties by the way) That comment coming from you is a breath of fresh air to a man about to asphyxiate in a near vacuum. To the other dirty old gentleman, (you know the one with 40 ideas but HE doesn't have a single one) I thank you for the encouragement I finally LIKE what I am writing I no longer doubt, though at present I have only written 2 stories these last few weeks been sick in bed when home coughing so much ribs hurt. I took many's advice months ago and tried the CAWS. Though I am not a top caliber writer yet, like many said I am keeping at it at least my spell check is working now lol
