People don't choose to become atheists. You can't help what you do and don't believe. There are millions of atheists that want the idea of god to be true, but cannot bring themselves to believing in it.

Not unless you have faith. And lets face it, faith should be defined as "The suspension of disbelief", because that is exactly what it is. You have faith by closing off the rational part of the mind and believing in something that you have no evidence for.

If there were evidence for a divine personal entity that cared about every waking and sleeping second of your existence, then you wouldn't need faith. Faith would be obsolete if we could categorically prove the existence of god.

I don't have faith in anything, I don't believe things are true, or believe things will work merely because I want them to.

 

Faith without religon

I'm of the opinion that creatures that are not self aware have infinite faith . They have no ability to question their existence. They just live in the moment. We humans seem to have a deep seated need to believe in a father figure. An entity who wields control over those things in nature that are threatening to us and cause us anxiety. The more threatened or worried we feel, the more likely we are to seek solace in an external controlling force beyond our own control. Those who say you need a religious life to be a moral human being are patently absurd. Empathy is universal to most species on earth. Religion is a pacifier, designed by humans to comfort and alleviate fear because we are self aware. I'm also of the opinion that those without religion tend to be self assured and more willing to face the potential risks of living on a very dynamic planet.
