Pinellas teen charged after accidentally shooting friend

Detectives in Pinellas County have arrested a 17-year-old boy after he accidentally shot his friend in the back with a handgun at a residence in Seminole.

Teenage victim accidentally shot by friend

Deputies: suspect was already on probation, now faces multiple charges

Victim was hospitalized with serious but non-life threatening injuries

The incident occurred at about 11:15 p.m. on Saturday, Jan. 14 at 11439 60th Terrace North.

When deputies arrived, the victim and three other male juveniles were found at the residence. According to reports, the victim informed deputies that he had been accidentally shot.

He was transported to Bayfront Medical Center for serious, but non-life threatening, injuries.

Detectives interviewed the other minors at the scene. According to reports, they believe the teens had been smoking marijuana when the suspect started playing with a handgun.

The weapon was accidentally discharged, and the bullet struck the victim in the back.

Detectives say the handgun, a Beretta .45 caliber, was reported stolen during a residential burglary that occurred in Seminole on December 9, 2016.

The suspect – who we’re not naming due to our crime guidelines – was already on probation for a possession of a controlled substance charge

He was charged with one count of delinquent in possession of a firearm, one count of delinquent in possession of ammunition, one count of culpable negligence, one count of resisting an officer without violence, and one count of felony violation of probation.

Greenwood teen found shot to death in back of vehicle

GREENWOOD, Ind. – A teenager was found dead in a vehicle in Greenwood early Sunday morning.

Greenwood police said they found a 16-year-old male dead in the back seat of a car around 1:30 a.m. in the 2000 block of Jaden Lane in the Pebble Creek Subdivision.

Officers believe the teen died of a single gunshot wound to the head.

While investigators were on scene, two teens, ages 15 and 16 arrived at the Greenwood Police Department with their parents, stating they witnessed the incident.

The pair identified the suspect as 18-year-old Isaac Stinemetz of Greenwood. Both teens said Stinemetz and the victim were arguing when he pulled out a gun and shot the victim once.

Stinemetz was arrested at his home by police.

During questioning, he admitted to shooting the victim, police said, but he claimed he thought the gun was unloaded.

Stinemetz told police after the shooting, he and two other juveniles panicked and fled the scene. The gun was dropped into a nearby storm drain and was later recovered by police.

He is currently being held without bond on the charge of reckless homicide, a level 5 felony.

Police have not released the name of the victim.

Police: 12-year-old boy shot in face at Pennsylvania shooting range

HALFMOON TOWNSHIP, Pa. - Pennsylvania State Police said that a 12-year-old boy was shot in the face at a state shooting range in Central Pennsylvania.

Officials said the incident happened at the Pennsylvania Game Commission’s Scotia Range in Halfmoon Township, located in Centre County.

Two men seriously injured in gun accident at Koko Head shooting range

KOKO HEAD (Hawaii News Now) -

Two men were were treated for injuries at the Koko Head shooting range just before 1 p.m. Sunday.

An EMS report says two men, both age 25, suffered serious injuries when a gun apparently exploded near the area they were standing.

One man suffered injuries to both hands, the other sustained injuries to the face.

The two were taken to a nearby trauma center where they have been stabilized.

And I say in advance I have probably already posted many of these same gun accidents and will probably continue to do so. But nobody can report GunFAILS like David Waldman so I consider it well worth my time and trouble.

So, maybe 2017 is a good time to try this again. It’s been a while since I was last able to publish a GunFAIL list. We’ve gone on hiatus before, but as with the last time, I never stopped keeping the raw lists. And neither did the TSA, which reports a 28 percent increase in the number of guns people “forgot” they were carrying through airports in 2016, smashing the record previously set in 2015. Last year, of course, smashed the previous record (with a 19 percent increase), set in 2014. And 2014 had seen a 22 percent increase over 2013, which had seen a 16.5 percent increase over 2012, which had seen a 17.9 percent increase over 2011, which … well, you(LINK REMOVED)

The new year presents us a new opportunity to pick it up again, since the FAIL never stops. Besides, New Year’s Eve is one of the two annual big nights for one of the cardinal sins of GunFAIL: celebratory gunfire.

This week’s list, covering the first seven days of the year, identifies 20 separate incidents of celebratory gunfire-related GunFAIL, including two fatalities and another 10 injuries. In fact, we saw our first child under 15 years of age accidentally shot to death just six minutes into the new year. Eighteen people accidentally fired their weapons into the homes or property of neighbors. Sixteen people accidentally shot themselves. Six people accidentally fired weapons they were cleaning, and five people accidentally shot family members. In other words, a pretty typical week, with the added bonus of hundreds of people across the country still not getting the message that firing their guns in the air is a spectacularly bad idea.

Unsurprisingly, Texans were among the top offenders in the celebratory gunfire category, and as if to put an exclamation point on the need to dial it back, this time they accidentally shot a sitting state legislator. Will the NRA will allow legislators to send a sternly worded letter to reckless gun owners? Will the NRA allow legislators to say there even is such a thing?

Sadly, we also saw that other annual event: someone being accidentally shot with a brand-new Christmas gun. This time, an 11-year-old North Carolina boy showing off his brand-new shotgun cost us the life of his 6-year-old cousin.

Below, you can review the GunFAIL findings for the first week of 2017.

(LINK REMOVED), 1/01/17: The community is in shock after a New Year’s Eve party turned deadly for a small child in Limestone County. A five-year-old girl was fatally shot Sunday morning at a party on Buckskin Drive in Athens. Fidel Rodriguez Canchola, 34, of Buckskin Drive in Athens was arrested in connection to the shooting, which the Limestone County Sheriff’s Office said was accidental. Canchola, known as Rodriguez, was booked into the Limestone County Jail on a charge of criminally negligent homicide, a class A misdemeanor. He is being held on a $5,000 bond. Deputy Stephen Young, public information officer for LSCO, said Sheriff Mike Blakely and Investigator Lance Royals located Rodriguez at his home at 7:20 AM Sunday. “At 12:06 this morning, deputies responded to a residence on Buckskin Drive, where the victim had been shot once in the chest,” Young said. “She was pronounced dead at Athens-Limestone Hospital.” Young said about 30 people were at the residence for a New Year’s Eve party. Initially nobody in the group said they had seen or heard anything except gunshots coming from down the street, Young said. Investigators recovered several .22 caliber shell casings at the scene. After interviewing those on the scene, investigators were able to determine that Rodriguez had allegedly fired several rounds in the yard toward the ground when the girl walked out into the line of fire, Young said. Rodriguez had left the scene, apparently on foot, before deputies arrived, according to Young. “When he realized what happened, he got scared and ran,” Young said. The .22 caliber revolver was recovered on the other side of a fence at the location. Rodriguez was arrested at his home Sunday morning without incident. “While every accidental death is tragic,” Sheriff Blakely said. “It’s especially difficult when you lose a young child. The sad thing is that incidents like this are 100 percent preventable with a little common sense.” The LCSO is reminding the community that while we all like to celebrate during the holidays, common sense should prevail. “Firearms are not fireworks. They should never be used when alcohol is consumed and all proper safety precautions must be taken.”

(LINK REMOVED) 1/01/17: An Ensley woman has a bullet hole in her ceiling and she says celebratory gunfire could be to blame. Rosie Harris and her husband who were home at the time. She says it happened just as people were ringing in the new year. She's been living in her Ensley home for about 15 years and nothing like this has happened before. She says the bullet came through the roof and into her home, piercing the sheetrock and then landing on the floor of her house. She said the sound was loud and it really scared her. She immediately called the police. The scariest part for her: she was headed to her bedroom passing her hallway, narrowly missing the room where the bullet landed. "Like a big bam, like someone shook it. It was a big bang noise and the sheet rock from the top of the ceiling had fell to the floor and I kept saying, ‘What was that?’ And I looked down on the floor and there was the bullet," Harris said. Harris said she plans to have someone come out to see if there's any more damage to her home. She says, at the point, she is against any celebratory gunfire on holidays as things can go terribly wrong.

(LINK REMOVED) 1/01/17: Police say a 12-year-old child was accidentally shot in Atlanta on New Year's Day. A spokesperson with Atlanta police said units responded to the incident around 12:30 AM after the child's 38-year-old uncle unintentionally discharged a .357 handgun. Police say the uncle was shot in the hand, while the child was shot in the chest, although not through the chest cavity, according to authorities. Police say both victims were in stable condition before they were taken to the hospital.

(LINK REMOVED) 1/01/16: Police say celebratory gunfire is to blame for stray bullets that went through a woman’s home. Bullets went through a home on Fledspar Way in south Fulton County around 2:00 AM Sunday. Homeowner Pamela Shirley said she heard four sets of gunshots. “I was so scared. Everybody was so scared. We wouldn’t turn the light on, and I’m like, ‘Boy these people are crazy,’” she said. Fulton County police were out Sunday collecting shell casings. Channel 2’s Matt Johnson went to Shirley’s home and she showed him where the bullets hit the wall and pierced her china cabinet. Shirley said none of the four people home at the time were hurt by the gunfire. “Anybody could get killed and I consider myself lucky,” she said. Shirley said she wants people to think twice before recklessly firing their guns. “Be careful. You never know. Innocent people will get caught in the craziness,” she said. Fulton County police said the search for whoever pulled the trigger is ongoing. Police warn celebratory gunfire can be a misdemeanor offense and carry a $1,000 fine.

(LINK REMOVED)1/01/17: A Georgia family is thankful to be alive after a stray bullet went through their roof and into their kitchen seconds after the start of 2017. The Turner family lives on Cougar Court in Hephzibah, Georgia. They sent WAVY sister station WJBF pictures of the hole in their roof. Family members say they heard celebratory gunfire in the area during New Year’s Eve. Just after midnight, they heard a loud bang in their kitchen. That’s when they noticed the hole in their roof and the bullet on their kitchen floor. Two members of the family had just left the kitchen minutes earlier while they were getting a snack. Investigators took the bullet as evidence and are trying to figure out who shot it. Deputies say if you shoot a gun into the air, you could be charged with a misdemeanor and face a fine of $1,000, or worse if someone is injured or killed.

(LINK REMOVED)1/01/17: Officials say a Colquitt County man is dead after he was struck by a stray bullet during celebratory New Year’s Day gunfire. The incident happened at 12:15 AM in the 100 block of Yates Lane. Officials with the Colquitt County Sheriff’s Office said Alonzo Cortez and his friends were talking and drinking in the front yard when he suddenly fell to the ground. Cortez died after being airlifted to a Tallahassee hospital. No arrests have been made.

(LINK REMOVED) 1/01/17: Two men were injured over the weekend when they were shot by celebratory gunfire, the Hillsborough Sheriff’s Office said. The first incident happened about 9:10 PM, Saturday (Dec. 31). Terry Wayne Snyder, 55, was riding a bicycle on Deerfield Street when he felt a sharp pain in his leg at the same time he heard fireworks in the area. Snyder was taken to Tampa General Hospital where, deputies said, he was treated and later released. The other incident happened about 12:09 AM Sunday (Jan. 1). Jesus Garcia-Renteria, 22, was standing in the front yard of 6010 First St. in Wimauma watching fireworks when a bullet struck him in the arm. Witnesses at the scene said they had no idea where the shot came from nor did anyone see any weapons. Renteria was taken to Tampa General where he was treated and later released, deputies said. Crime Stoppers of Tampa Bay is offering a reward of up to $3,000 for information that leads to the identification and arrest of the unknown suspects involved in these two cases. (LINK REMOVED) 1/01/17: Not long after leaving the scene of the fire-starting, Chitwood and his driver hurried to a home where a woman had accidentally shot herself in the hand while cleaning a gun. A domestic disturbance had occurred, deputies were told, and the woman’s husband had left the house. On the scene, multiple patrol cars and other first responders, including the Deltona Fire Department and an EVAC ambulance, created a scene for neighbors as flashing blue and red lights lit up the night. The woman’s husband was subsequently located as he walked in the darkness along North Normandy Boulevard near Epic Theatres of West Volusia. After Chitwood questioned him, the man was allowed to go; Chitwood said the man was not facing any charges at that time.

(LINK REMOVED) 1/01/17: Police believe a stray bullet may have struck a man in the head. Aurora Police Chief Nick Mets says at midnight, a driver stopped at a red light near I-225 and Alameda. That's when a bullet came down through his sunroof striking him in the head. The chief wants to use it as a reminder for people to not shoot guns in the air on New Year's. Chief Metz also says the person who was shot is expected to survive.

(LINK REMOVED)1/01/17: A Boulder man was accidentally shot in the chest after the gun his friend was playing with went off after the two had returned from a night of partying this weekend. Boulder police were called to Boulder Community Health's Foothills Hospital on New Year's Day after a 23-year-old male came in with a gunshot wound to his chest. Police said that the man and a friend had been out clubbing overnight and came back to a house in Boulder and started playing with a gun. The gun then accidentally went off, hitting one of the men. Boulder police spokeswoman Shannon Cordingly said he is expected to survive the gunshot. Cordingly said the incident is still under investigation and police have not yet determined if any charges are warranted in the case.

(LINK REMOVED) 1/01/17: At least five men were shot in separate incidents early New Year’s Day, including a victim who told cops a stray bullet struck him inside his Brooklyn home, police sources said. The 46-year-old man said he was sitting in his 12th-floor Sutter Avenue apartment when heard gunshots just after midnight, and then felt a pain in his arm. He then realized he had been shot in the arm, he told cops.

(LINK REMOVED) 1/01/17: The Clark County coroner’s office has identified the woman police say was killed in an accidental shooting in the central valley early New Year’s Day. She was 22-year-old Maryann Nabil Rosail, of Anaheim, California, the coroner’s office said Tuesday. Metropolitan Police Department homicide investigators determined Rosail was in a parked car in the 3700 block of Cambridge Street, near South Maryland Parkway and East Twain Avenue, with three other people about 4:30 AM Sunday when a gun was accidentally fired inside the vehicle. She later died at Sunrise Hospital and Medical Center, police said. The cause of Rosail’s death was a gunshot wound to the side. The coroner’s office ruled her death a homicide. Metro spokesman Danny Cordero said Tuesday that no arrests have been made and that after an investigation the Clark County district attorney’s office will determine whether criminal charges will be filed.

(LINK REMOVED) 1/01/17: A mother driving home from a late-night church service with her two children was struck by a stray bullet early New Year’s Day. LaShawnda Pratt's finger was shattered by a bullet 15 minutes into 2017. After undergoing surgery Sunday morning, Pratt now has pins in her pinky finger. "I had just left church, me and the kids,” Pratt said. “And the bullet just hit the car out of nowhere – the front windshield." Pratt said she had just taken a left off Dabbs House Road onto Nine Mile Road and was headed towards the interstate when she heard gunfire. The young mother said she threw up her hand and basically caught the bullet when her windshield shattered. "I tried to keep as calm as possible, because I’ve got young kids and I didn’t want to scare them,” Pratt said. “So I kept as calm as possible and drove to [VCU Medical Center].” Pratt believes the random gunfire came from Creighton Court where officers were spotted later in the day Sunday. Pratt said she hoped police can find the gunman. "Just stop shooting on New Year’s," Pratt said. “I got a registered gun and I don’t go out and shoot just because I can." Pratt said after the initial shock of what happened to her wore off, she thought of young (LINK REMOVED) Capt. One Richmond police officer on patrol(LINK REMOVED)a photo showing the number of calls coming in for random gunfire just after midnight on New Year’s. The seven-year-old boy was killed after he was struck by celebratory gunfire on the Fourth of July in Chesterfield County in 2013. Pratt, who is out of work and trying to heal, said she never imagined something like this would affect her family.

(LINK REMOVED)1/01/17: After days of warnings about celebratory gunfire for the new year, people are finding bullets and bullet holes in some pretty scary places. The bullet hole through the window of Adam Murnan’s Uptown home is clear in daylight, but around four in the morning, he didn’t know what had happened. “I kind of blacked out. It was pretty terrifying, but we called 911, and they came pretty quickly,” Murnan said. He was asleep when he woke to a pain in his lower right leg. “A friend of mine actually eventually saw the little copper or brass coloring of the bullet. The other friend saw the hole through the window and the curtain,” Murnan said. His x-ray shows his shattered bone. Dallas Police would only say the case remains under investigation, but Murnan is convinced the bullet came from someone firing a gun into the air to celebrate the new year.

In Oak Cliff, Milani Arguelles said the same thing caused a bullet to come through the ceiling of her bathroom. “I saw the hole, and I was like Holy Cow that is a bullet hole through my house. Happy New Year. There’s a bullet hole through my house,” Arguelles said.

(LINK REMOVED)1/01/17: n Jerry Serrano’s northwest Fort Worth yard, he said a bullet out of nowhere bounced off his shoulder just after midnight. “One of my friends, he says, hey you got a hole in your shirt,” Serrano said. His doctor told him he was lucky, but Serrano wonders what would have happened if he had been standing a little to the left. “He told me too, you know what, you’re just a couple of inches from your head. Now you’re head’s a different story. It hits your head, your brain could be sensitive, and it could do something to it,” Serrano said.
[*](LINK REMOVED) 01/01/17: Two people were injured by celebratory gunfire overnight, police said. One man, Jorge Leal, said he and his wife were hosting a neighborhood party last night when his friend Pedro was hit. He and his friend were standing near the street when the clock hit midnight - and Pedro was hit by a bullet. "[He] said, 'Hey, I feel something', and I said, 'What happened'," Leal said. "He took off his shirt and he was hit... I saw the bullet right there, there was a hole right here." Pedro was bleeding badly and they called 911, Leal said. "I was nervous because my kids were outside, everybody was outside," Leal said. The bullet narrowly missed his friend's heart, Leal said. Pedro was released from the hospital this morning. It's not the only injury from celebratory gunfire. A state representative from Hidalgo County was injured overnight. He is doing okay, officials said.
[*](LINK REMOVED) 1/01/17: A Texas lawmaker is lucky to be alive after an apparently stray bullet hit his head during a New Year's celebration early Sunday, authorities said. State Rep. Armando "Mando" Martinez, D-Weslaco, said his wife had just given him a kiss shortly after ringing in the new year with family and friends, and the next thing he knew, "it felt like a sledgehammer hit me over the head." A bullet fragment had just punctured the top of the south Texas legislator's head. Martinez said he had just stepped outside a home in a rural neighborhood north of Weslaco when he was hit. Martinez, 40, was transferred to the neurosurgical unit at Valley Baptist Medical Center in Harlingen, where surgeons removed the bullet fragment. The fragment had penetrated his skull and lodged itself into the dura mater, the top layer of the brain, doctors told Martinez. The fragment appears to be from a .223 caliber round, said Martinez, who spoke to CNN by phone on Sunday while recovering at the hospital. "Had it gone any further, I don't think we would be having this conversation," Martinez said. Hidalgo County Sheriff Eddie Guerra said Martinez's survival was nothing short of a miracle. The sheriff's office is investigating the shooting, and investigators "have reason to believe that (Martinez) was hit by a stray bullet," county sheriff's office spokesman JP Rodriguez said. "There is no evidence to indicate he was targeted," Rodriguez said. "It was a miracle last night. I was given another chance at life and I'm grateful for it," Martinez said. Martinez was elected to a seventh term in November and scheduled to take the oath of office January 10.
[*](LINK REMOVED)1/01/17: Police are investigating after a woman was hit by a bullet while party goers were ringing in the new year on Sixth Street Saturday night. Victoria Rocha, 35, was transported to University Medical Center Brackenridge with a gunshot wound to her leg. Rocha tells KXAN she and her fiance had just parked minutes before and walked down to 6th and Brazos. She sat down on a bench across from the Driskill Hotel to rest her feet, and called her son at 12:03 AM to wish him a Happy New Year. “As soon as I hung up the phone we heard a loud bang out of nowhere,” said Rocha. “At the time I didn’t realize I was hit.” When she tried to get up she could tell something was wrong. “It was kind of numb and I could feel it burning like a hotness to my leg,” said Rocha. Austin Travis County EMS rushed her to the hospital where Rocha says doctors removed a 45 caliber bullet that had traveled from the front of her left thigh to the back. Austin police said they believe it was a falling bullet that came from someone firing a gun into the air nearby “I’m just left with why, I don’t understand,” said Rocha wiping tears from her eyes. There are currently no suspects in the case and detectives are expected to be reviewing video footage to see if they can spot the person who pulled the trigger. A HALO camera is on the corner recording around the clock and and providing a live feed to Austin police. The Driskill Hotel also has surveillance cameras. The head of security tells KXAN APD looked at their footage, but didn’t see much. Officers stationed at the hotel, along with employees at nearby bars say they didn’t see or hear anything either other than a loud crowd in the packed street. “Not a way to start the year, but thank God it wasn’t worse,” said Rocha. “I really hope that they find the owner of the gun or that somebody comes forward.” In the meantime, the mother of four will be home recovering and is unable to go back to work until her leg heals. As the clock struck midnight, celebratory shots were fired and homes were hit by stray bullets. “We were just sitting on the couch watching a movie and we heard this bang.” When Stephanie Swanson’s husband went to look, he found a bullet hole in their sliding door. The two began to panic as their three young children were sleeping soundly upstairs. “There was a moment there of 15 minutes, where we weren't exactly sure how to keep them safe,” Swanson said. Police believe someone sent a celebratory shot into the air 5 blocks away from their Hyde Park home. “I'm so thankful that it went through this window and not the bedroom window on the second floor. It easily could've been in my sons bed.”

Jamie Moore came home to find a bullet hole in her ceiling and a bullet fallen right next to her 4-year-old daughter’s favorite spot to play. “Makes you think twice about where you live, if you're safe in your own home,” Moore said. On an evening that is supposed to be all about celebrations with loved ones and finding a fresh start, two metro moms are ridden with what-if’s and unsettling anxiousness that they can’t shake. “When you fire a gun into the air, sure it's fun for the moment. Until you are the one who is responsible for a bullet going through someone's bedroom window,” Swanson said. “We get to go to Home Depot and buy a new door and we're fine. So many parents, that's not their reality. A few minutes of fun on New Year’s Eve is not worth that ever.” If you’re caught shooting gun within city limits, you’ll be charged with a misdemeanor.
[*](LINK REMOVED)1/01/17: People who live on the ninth floor of a building at Ninth Street and Baltimore Avenue in downtown Kansas City were just about home a few minutes after midnight Sunday when they heard fire crackers or gunshots. Entering their loft, they found three windows shot out and a bullet lodged in the drywall of their bedroom. There were three more bullet hits in the brick exterior of the building. Theirs was just one of 156 reports to Kansas City police of shots fired just after midnight Jan. 1, the result of people who felt the need to shoot a firearm to celebrate the new year. Theirs was the fourth police report taken in Kansas City in 2017. Police are getting really tired of this. “For 10 to 15 minutes after midnight (on New Year’s), it sounds like a war zone,” said Sgt. Mike Foster of the property crimes division at the Kansas City Police Central Patrol, adding that it puts officers on edge. There were eight reports of property damage believed to be caused by celebratory gunfire on New Year’s night in the Central Patrol alone. Many, if not most, celebratory shooters fire up into the sky, but those bullets still have to come down somewhere. Eleven-year-old Blair Shanahan Lane was killed by such a bullet on the Fourth of July in 2011, in east Kansas City. The man convicted in her death, Aaron Sullivan, served 18 months in prison. In the case of the loft shooting, however, the bullets came from a high-powered rifle at a more or less straight angle, leading police to believe they originated from another high rise about 400 yards away. Foster said police are still investigating, but they have witnesses and have identified a person of interest. “It could have been ugly,” Foster said. “They might have been having fun, but what they did was really dumb. It was dangerous. We’re really investigating this. We’re taking this case seriously. We’re going to bring somebody in and find out why they did this.” Foster suggests that next New Year’s, people pop a bottle of bubbly instead of popping off a gun. “Don’t do it,” he said. “It’s not worth it.”

It happened just after midnight New Year's Day when neighbors apparently fired several celebratory gun shots. The first day of the new year almost became the last day of Jammie Fuller's life. "I started hearing 'bang bang bang bang', and all of a sudden I felt something I thought hit my headboard," said Jammie Fuller, Ferguson homeowner. Fuller found a bullet had torn through her bedroom wall and lodged in the bed frame. "If it had been higher, it would've struck me in my bed sleeping," said Fuller.Fuller said just after midnight, shots of celebration rang out across the street. "There were just guns being shot, and it sounded like a war zone. Neighbors are shooting up other neighbors homes and allowing that kind of celebration," said Fuller. Fuller said this is not even the first time her home has been shot up during a big holiday. There are other bullet holes in her home - including one from a New Year's Eve a few years ago, which shot through her patio window."Every New Year's, every Fourth of July, you might be shot in your own home," said Fuller. In the middle of speaking with her, Fuller pointed out the sound of gunshots in the neighborhood. A sound becoming all too familiar, and the main reason she plans to move. "I want to live in a neighborhood take care of neighbors. I can't deal with it anymore," said Fuller. Fuller says the police have pinpointed the home the shots came from, but no charges or citations have been issued at this point.

On Sunday January 1, at approximately 1:30 AM, the Oak Hill Police Department (OHPD) received a call regarding a male with a gunshot wound to the head. Officers responded to 128 Bingham Street in Oak Hill. According to Oak Hill Police Chief Donald R. Arbogast, officers arrived at the scene and found 24-year-old Michael Hickman of Oak Hill inside of the residence with a gunshot wound to his head. Reportedly, he was conscious and alert and was transported by Jackson County EMS to a local hospital and was later flown to a Columbus hospital. As of Tuesday Hickman was listed in stable condition Arbogast stated. "At this time, it is believed that Mr. Hickman’s injuries were the result of a self-inflicted gunshot wound from an accidental discharge of the firearm he was handling," explained Arbogast. The Jackson County Sheriff’s Office and Madison-Jefferson Fire Department also responded and assisted at the scene.

The bullet struck Kyle Berry, a resident of the 4000 block of Jason Avenue, in the leg, according to a police report. Police were called just after midnight on Jan. 1 when he went to the Johnson Memorial Health emergency room. Police searched the home to make sure the bullet hadn’t left the property. Berry told police he was carrying his 9mm handgun and dropped it accidentally. He had already removed the magazine, and didn’t know that a bullet was in the chamber, he told police. Just after 8 PM, Monday deputies from the Reno County Sheriff’s Office and EMS were dispatched to 2203 Nickerson Blvd. on the west side of Hutchinson for a 15-year-old that had been shot in the chest with a shotgun, according to a social media report. It appears that two teens, including one who lived there and a friend that was visiting, had been out shooting shotguns earlier in the day. Coliseum Blvd. Police at the scene told NewsChannel 15 someone apparently accidentally pulled the trigger of a gun as it was being passed around a party at the motel. A man in the room was shot in the head, but the injury was not life-threatening. According to a Fort Wayne Police report, an officer nearby heard the shot ring out and saw people scatter into the motel’s parking lot. A woman then came to the officer’s squad car and told him someone had been shot, the report said. As the officer approached the motel, he saw a man holding a black “Ak-47 style rifle” and walking northbound near two rooms with open doors, the report said. The officer ordered the man o drop the gun, and he did, the report said. The man – identified as Christian D. Myers – was placed into custody. Inside Room 123, officers found a man identified as Tyler Eddington laying near a bed bleeding from his head, the report said. Police found another gun inside the room, along with apparent marijuana, the report said. Officers also found a bullet hole in the west wall of the room and holes on the outside of the wall and the inside and outside of the stairway wall, according to the report. Investigators identified at least two witnesses, and one woman went with detectives to police headquarters to make an official statement, the report said. Court records show Myers was charged Tuesday with criminal recklessness.

The boy’s mother, Jennifer Ruiz, 29, of Lamesa, has been arrested and charged with “endangering a child,” Lamesa Chief of Police Dale E. Alwan Sr. said on Thursday. He said the charges against Ruiz are a result of “her refusal to seek medical attention for the child.” An arrest warrant also has been issued for Benny Vela, 28, of Lamesa, charging him with “injury to a child” in connection to that same shooting incident. “Vela remains at large and is evading law enforcement,” Chief Alwan said on Thursday. Officers with the Lamesa Police Department first discovered that the boy had been struck by a shotgun blast more than 13 hours earlier, according to information from the police department, while they were investigating the drive-by shooting that had been reported about 6:40 p.m. in the 1600 block of North 8th Street. About 12:50 AM Tuesday, Jan. 3, officers requested an ambulance be dispatched to 1615 North 8th Street in regard to the boy’s injuries. The boy was taken by Medical Arts Hospital EMS to the local emergency room, Chief Alwan said, but later was transported to a Lubbock hospital where he was admitted.

Bernalillo County Sheriff’s Office Public Information Officer Felicia Romero said around 2:45 PM deputies received a shots-fired call on the 100 block of Cynthia Loop in the northwest Albuquerque. According to the criminal complaint, when they arrived, they found a 61-year-old male with a gunshot wound and another man, uninjured, saying that he had shot his best friend. Life-saving measures on the victim were not successful, Romero said. The male victim was identified as 61-year-old Charles Ulery. According to the criminal complaint, John Bennett, 46, and Ulery had returned to Bennett's residence in the 100 block of Cynthia Loop after driving around town selling jewelry. Bennet told deputies that he exited the truck and Ulery's girlfriend got into the truck, as she and Ulery were going to leave. Bennett said he reached into the cab of the truck to retrieve his shotgun which he had been carrying around for protection due to threats against him and his girlfriend. In the complaint, Bennett told authorities that he had reported these threats to law enforcement. Bennet told deputies that he put the shotgun under one of his armpits with the barrel facing forward but was unsure of how exactly he was holding. Bennett said that he somehow managed to unintentionally fire the shotgun, striking Ulery in the face and killing him. Bennett said Ulery was either in the driver's seat or near the door of the driver's side. According to the criminal complaint, when the weapon fired, it recoiled and struck Bennett in the face, causing laceration and bleeding. In the complaint, Bennett also told deputies that he knew he shouldn't have been carrying the shotgun and that he was not knowledgeable in how to handle firearms. Bennett is charged with involuntary manslaughter and is being held on $5,000.00 cash or surety bond.

The Silver City police responded to a home in the 1200 block of 40th Street at 1:21 on Tuesday afternoon for a request for an officer. When police arrived, a woman came running out of the home with blood on her hands and neck, saying her boyfriend was inside. Police found the victim, 24-year-old Randy Iler, lying on the couch with an open wound to the left side of his head. There was a black pistol on the floor next to the couch. The officer began to put pressure on Iler’s open wound and waited for EMS. Police interviewed Iler’s girlfriend, who told them that Iler was sitting on the couch holding the gun in his hand. She said he usually holds his firearm and pulls the trigger but usually the safety is on. She said Iler was getting ready to leave and go pick up a friend and take them to Walmart and he had the gun pointed toward the ceiling and pulled the trigger and the gun went off. She said when the gun went off, that’s when she noticed his wound. EMS arrived on scene and advised that Iler would need to be airlifted to the El Paso Trauma Center. Silver City Police Chief Ed Reynolds said the incident is still under investigation. Reynolds said Iler was in critical condition in an El Paso hospital. Deputies were called out to a residence in Pinetown around 6 PM on Tuesday, and first responders said they found 6-year-old Victoria Whitehurst had died of a gunshot wound. The Sheriff’s Office said Victoria was visiting the home of her 11-year-old cousin and a 12-year-old girl, who are not being named. The boy was showing the two girls a shotgun he got for Christmas when the gun went off, struck and killed Victoria and injured one of the family dogs, deputies said. The dog suffered minor injuries and was taken for medical treatment, the Sheriff’s Office said. Those who have visited the family said the 11-year-old is distraught. “He’s a good boy,” said neighbor Kaliff Moore. “But, phew, I just can’t imagine how the family is now. We just need prayers up there for them.” Jennifer Gray, a family friend, said Victoria and the boy were close. “They got along great,” said Gray. “They were more like brother and sister a lot of the times because, you know, Victoria was here a lot.” Neighbors are in disbelief and want the community to remember the little girl whose life was cut short. “We’ve all gotten to know Victoria,” said Gray. “She was here a lot, so we all got to know and love her.”

The shooting happened about 6:45 PM Wednesday, Jan. 4 at the officer's home along Bigham Road in Waxhaw. According to the sheriff, Officer Jeremy Ferguson's 2-year-old son found his off-duty gun and fired a shot. The bullet hit Ferguson's wife, but she is expected to be okay. Trent W. McCullough made the call and reported his friend, George Ely, had suffered an accidental, self-inflicted .45 caliber gunshot wound to the abdomen, according to deputies’ reports. “Units responded in reference to a gentleman that was shot in the stomach,” Sheriff Todd Corbin said. “They initially came in as a self-inflicted gunshot wound.” After speaking to McCullough, Corbin said he learned the wound likely was not self-inflicted. A press release from the sheriff's office noted that evidence indicated "the shooting was not an intentional act, but it was also not self-inflicted." “I actually interviewed Mr. McCullough and during my conversation he was overcome by the grief that his friend was injured,” Corbin said. “He admitted that he didn’t mean to shoot his friend." An injured man was not all the sheriff’s office encountered. Detective Sgt. Bill Duncan obtained a search warrant for the residence following McCullough's arrest. Deputies recovered drug paraphernalia and firearms during a search of the house. “It was a marijuana grow operation,” Corbin said, referring to the drug paraphernalia. The firearm used to shoot the victim also was recovered from the home, where the sheriff said McCullough does not live alone. Corbin referred to the residence as a family home, but declined to elaborate. “We were able to canvass the area and recover all the trace evidence (including) the shell casing,” Corbin said. McCullough still was awaiting his bond hearing as of Thursday afternoon. He is charged with reckless homicide, a third-degree felony punishable by nine months to three years in prison.

Deputy Chief Brian Levesque said the gunshot went through the wall of one home and entered a neighbor's home on the same side of the street. Leonor Drive is a small street between Slocum Road and Alpha Street. No one was injured in the incident, he said. It occurred shortly before 6 PM. The man was cleaning a HNK 9mm when it discharged, according to Levesque. The Standard-Times learned of the incident when a reader messaged the newspaper on Facebook about it. Levesque said the gun was "negligently discharged," and not "accidentally discharged." He said a gun owner must make sure the gun is empty before cleaning it. He declined to identify the addresses of the house where the gun was discharged from and the second house that was struck by the gunfire. "It went through the house and went into the other house," he said. There were no arrests in the incident, he said. Levesque said the man, whom he would not identify, has a license to carry a handgun. The license is currently under review by the Dartmouth Police Department's Firearms Division.

Milford police say Shauna Lambert, 50, who works at Cincinnati’s District 2, was intoxicated when she dropped her gun inside a theater at the Rave Cinemas around 9:30 PM. Cellphone video shot by witness Robert Dunaway shows the moment Lambert was handcuffed inside the Rave Cinema. “What she did could have accidentally killed somebody. When she dropped the gun, you go to pick up a gun, you're squeezing your hands. You could accidentally pull that trigger, accidentally shoot myself or my father, my mother,” Dunaway said. Dunaway started rolling after the commotion died down. Moviegoers watching "Rogue One" panicked when someone saw the weapon and yelled. “There was a battle scene going on so all you heard were gunshots. I just kind of stood and watched until everything cleared up,” Dunaway said. Other video clips show Lambert lying across several seats. People inside the theater were holding her down before police arrived. Some claimed Lambert had been acting odd from the moment the movie started. “She seemed a little strange, then once the movie started, she stood up a couple times and then started to grab towards my fiancée who was right beside me,” witness Tory Peterson said. Lambert has a history with alcohol, police said. She was charged with an OVI in Blue Ash last April, officials said. She pleaded to a lesser charge of recklessly operating a vehicle. Some hope this latest incident at the Rave Cinemas is a wake-up call. “The whole situation is bad, it just has to stop. She needs to probably have a job where holding a gun is not part of her job,” Dunaway said. Cincinnati police say Lambert could face disciplinary action. She faces charges of possessing a weapon while intoxicated and inducing panic, authorities said.

An officer secured a tourniquet to slow bleeding and an ambulance transported him to Trumbull Memorial Hospital and later to St. Elizabeth Youngstown Hospital, police said. Provonozac told police he was sitting with his legs cross and was about to clean his firearm when it discharged. Officers found cleaning supplies out. The Smith and Wesson semi-automatic handgun was found on the bedroom floor with 15 live rounds in the magazine and one round in the chamber. Police said it appears to be an accident. The gun was taken to the police station for safe keeping, the report states.
[*](LINK REMOVED) 1/07/17: A 23-year-old man is recovering after his father accidentally shot him with a handgun, according to South Windsor police. Police said they were called to a home on Gail Lane around 9:50 AM Saturday for a reported shooting. When they arrived the resident told them that he accidentally shot his son in the stomach with a 9mm handgun while showing off the weapon, police said. The victim was conscious and alert when police arrived and was taken to Hartford Hospital for treatment of a gunshot wound to his lower abdomen. Officers interviewed other family members on scene and it appears this was in fact an accident, police said.
[*](LINK REMOVED)1/07/17: Believing the weapon he was holding was unloaded, a child accidentally shot a man Saturday afternoon, police said. The 42-year-old man was shot by a 12-year-old boy inside a home on Griswold Street Jan. 7, said Jackson Police Deputy Chief Elmer Hitt. At about 4:30 PM, police were called to Henry Ford Allegiance Health to investigate a report of a gunshot victim who was brought to hospital by his wife, Hitt said. According to the victim and a witness at the scene, the man and his wife were visiting his mother at the home where he was shot. The man had a personal firearm with him, which he said he was showing to others at the home, Hitt said. The man told police he believed he unloaded the weapon and sat it down, Hitt said. Sometime later, a 12-year-old boy at the home --believing the weapon was unloaded -- picked it up and pulled the trigger, firing a single round at the man striking him in the abdomen, Hitt said. The man was taken to the hospital by his wife where he was treated and listed in stable condition, Hitt said. The weapon was legally owned, and he had a valid concealed weapons permit at the time of the shooting, Hitt said.The case has been forwarded to the Jackson County Prosecutor's Office for review.
[*](LINK REMOVED)1/07/17: A Medford man accidentally shot himself in the leg at The Holiday Inn on Saturday night, according to Springfield police. Sgt. Rich Charboneau said the 23-year-old was in a hotel room at 919 Kruse Way with six people when he unholstered his gun around 9:15 PM to disassemble the weapon—a process that also involves pulling the trigger. The man later told police from the emergency room at Sacred Heart Medical Center at RiverBend that he’d forgotten, however, to eject the bullet from the chamber before he fired the gun. The bullet went through his thigh, but missed any major arteries and the bone, Charboneau said. The gun was seized for safe-keeping, but Charboneau said the man would be able to reclaim the weapon at the Springfield Police Department. No charges were filed in connection with the incident.
[*](LINK REMOVED)1/07/17: Just found this while going through police reports looking for the newest ones published with narratives: A 17-year-old girl showed up in a hospital emergency room on Saturday afternoon with a gunshot wound. East Precinct police were dispatched. They talked to the victim’s boyfriend, who they found “pacing outside the emergency room.” The report says he told them it happened in his car at 27th SW and SW Cambridge. He and his girlfriend were in the car with friends of his; one friend, he said, had a gun and while saying “something similar to ‘we’re going to be brothers for life’,” racked the slide on his pistol, and it fired, going through the front passenger seat and through the girl’s chest. They drove to the hospital. Police talked to the girl just before she was taken into surgery and reported that “she made statements consistent with the gunshot being accidental.” They found a bullet hole, bullet, and blood in the car, which was impounded. Police later met with the man whose gun fired; he was arrested and booked into the King County Jail for investigation of assault.ADDED 9:54 AM TUESDAY: We now have the probable-cause document from the 18-year-old suspect’s bail hearing Monday afternoon. He is a Rainier Valley resident and was released on personal recognizance. The document says that he told police a different story about the gunshot – that he got into the car, noticed a gun on the floor, picked it up with the intent of throwing it out the window, and that, he said, was when it went off. He said he then gave it to his brother, who also was in the car, and told him to get rid of it, adding that he doesn’t know what happened to the gun. He has no criminal record in online statewide files.

GunFAIL CCXXVIII

We’re back again, and just to clear things up for you non-Romans, this is the 228th week that I’ve been collecting GunFAIL stories. Not all of the weekly compilations have been published, mind you. But I’ve never stopped collecting them, and I’ve got the overflowing drafts folder to prove it, in case you’re ever interested.

The second week of 2017 brought us more of the usual: 20 people who accidentally shot themselves, 11 accidental gun fatalities, 7 minors accidentally shot, 5 people accidentally shot by family members or significant others, 3 hunting accidents, 3 people accidentally shot by someone cleaning a still-loaded gun, 2 people who accidentally shot themselves while holstering or unholstering their weapons, etc., etc., etc.

Among the stranger stories from the week, we found yet another legislative GunFAIL, as New Hampshire state rep. Carolyn Halstead became the second New Hampshire legislator to catch our attention by dropping a loaded firearm during a committee hearing. (The first, former-Rep. (LINK REMOVED) ended 2016(LINK REMOVED) for drug possession with intent to distribute, and attempted (LINK REMOVED) charges. Because he’s a law-abiding citizen and whatnot.) Rep. Halstead was reportedly “mortified” at having knocked her gun out of its holster in a crowded hearing on the merits of full-day kindergarten. Luckily the weapon didn’t fire and no one was hurt. But if the subject of arming school teachers ever comes up for a hearing, I hope she’ll reflect on her own experience.

We also have an entry this week from what turned out to be a gun enthusiast literally in his mom’s basement. Nothing terribly wrong with that, of course, but things went south when he accidentally fired his gun up through the ceiling, and shot his mom while she was sleeping in bed, upstairs.

Lastly, the story that inspired this week’s title, which sounds more than a little sketchy. I’m not sure how many meat-packing plants operate this way, but out at Yoder Meats in Yoder, Kansas, they got hold of a buffalo to be slaughtered, and decided to do it by climbing a ladder and trying to shoot the animal with a rifle, over the side of a trailer. The buffalo, not interested in standing still for it, jostled the ladder and caused the rifleman to shoot another nearby employee, instead. No word on the other employee’s status. He probably survived, but if not, I’m sure he was delicious.

(LINK REMOVED), 1/08/17: [Photo caption: Teachers describe Brock Blick as a model student.] An 11-year-old boy has been fatally shot during a hunting trip in northern Tennessee. Adams Fire Chief Ray Brown says the boy was shot in the side by a 20-gauge shotgun. Robertson County Emergency Management Services Assistant Director Russell Gupton says the boy was accidentally shot Sunday afternoon at the Three Feathers Hunting Preserve in Cedar Hill. It is unclear how the shooting occurred or who was with the boy at the time. He was not immediately identified, and no charges were immediately filed. Gupton says initial reports indicated he was 12, but records from Robertson EMS say the child was 11 and lived in Clarksville. Three Feathers’ website says the preserve specializes in private hunts for game birds.

(LINK REMOVED), 1/08/17: A 21-year-old man was arrested Sunday afternoon after he accidentally shot himself in the leg with a gun he was allegedly attempting to steal, according to a police report. When police arrived in the 2000 block of Caddo Circle, they found the man lying on the ground with blood-stained pants. According to the report, officers found a revolver near a white truck with its door slightly open. The report said the gun and truck belonged to a 70-year-old man who lived nearby. After he was taken to the hospital, the suspect told officers he was walking down the street looking through the windows of vehicles. The man opened the unlocked door of the white truck and found the gun in a tan holster between the seats, the report said. The man picked up the gun, fumbled with it and dropped it against the side of the vehicle, he told police. The gun fired and a bullet hit him in the leg. The man told police he staggered to a neighboring yard to lie down and called 911 because he wasn’t sure if he had been shot. He was later arrested on a charge of burglary of a vehicle and theft of a firearm, the report said.

(LINK REMOVED), 1/08/17: A Flordell Hills man was charged Monday with assault in what police called an accidental shooting of his 14-year-old nephew at the Sugar Pines apartments in north St. Louis County. Jordon L. Henderson, 20, of the 7000 block of Roslyn Drive, was charged with second-degree assault. His first name is spelled Jordan in some records. He was jailed on a $50,000 cash-only bail. The shooting was about 7:45 PM Sunday in the 3500 block of Sugar Crest Drive. Charges say Henderson "playfully pointed a handgun at victim and pulled the trigger multiple times without the gun going off." At one point while pulling the trigger, however, the gun fired and the boy was hit once in the abdomen. The boy, identified in court documents by initials D.H., was taken to a hospital and is expected to survive. Authorities initially said he was 13 but now say he is 14. Charges say Henderson admitted shooting his nephew.

(LINK REMOVED), 1/08/17: Riley County Police say a woman is accused of criminal discharge of a weapon for an incident that led to evacuation of a Manhattan apartment complex. Authorities say Kelle Kerr, 22, accidentally fired a gun during a reported pipe burst incident early Sunday at the Highland Ridge Apartments. The Manhattan Fire Department was responding to a fire alarm call when police received the gun shot report. Officers then found a suspicious device in an apartment, and evacuated residents until the bomb squad could investigate. Police determined the device was actually a realistic prop and police say the fire alarm was set off by a burst pipe.

(LINK REMOVED), 1/08/17: Police in Springfield say an incident in which a woman was sent to the hospital with a gunshot wound to the head was accidental. No one was arrested or is facing charges after the 30-year-old woman suffered the injury at home in the 1400 block of Columbus Avenue around 8:30 PM Sunday, according to the Springfield police report. The victim’s live-in boyfriend told officers he was hanging his coat up on a rack when the gun, a silver Cobra .22-caliber handgun, fell out of a pocket, struck the floor and discharged a round, according to the report. The victim was standing about 5 feet away and the bullet grazed her head, according to police. Police determined it was an accident. The victim was taken to Springfield Regional Medical Center for treatment of the injury.

(LINK REMOVED), 1/09/17: A Bethlehem woman is facing a host of weapons charges in connection with an accidental shooting that occurred Monday afternoon near Yosko Park in the city. Melanie F. Santos, of the 800 block of Atlantic Street, is facing weapons charges after police found a handful of guns in her vehicle while investigating the shooting. As a convicted felon, the 24-year-old is prohibited from possessing any firearms. She’s currently in Northampton County Prison on a parole violation awaiting her preliminary arraignment Thursday afternoon. Bethlehem police were called to St. Luke’s University Hospital in Fountain Hill shortly after 3 PM Monday to investigate a report of a gunshot victim. The victim told authorities that he was shot in the leg in the area of Atlantic and East Fifth streets by a man he knows only as “T,” according to court records. The man told police he was shot accidentally by a revolver-style handgun and driven to the hospital by his girlfriend’s relative. When police responded to the area of the reported shooting to locate a crime scene, officers spotted a woman later identified as Santos standing at a car parked in the 800 block of Laufer Street, according to records. Santos ran from the scene and was eventually caught after a foot chase through backyards in the neighborhood, according to records. A resident in the 800 block of East Fifth Street reported finding a revolver in his backyard, one of the yards through which police chased Santos. Authorities discovered a fully loaded Ruger .357 stainless steel revolver along with a baseball cap Santos dropped during the chase, police said. Inside Santos’s car police found a Marlin 30-30 rifle with a scope, a Marlin .308 rifle with a scope, a Ruger Single Six .22 caliber revolver, a Remington 7mm hunting handgun, ammunition and several rifle scopes. Investigators said the Ruger discovered inside the car matched the gun description provided by the gunshot victim. Police also found paperwork in the car from the Northampton County adult probation department belonging to Santos. A records check revealed she was convicted of a felony count of criminal trespass and a misdemeanor count of false imprisonment. Police also learned that the silver Hyundai belonged to Santos’s sister and that Santos put her own license plate on the vehicle and routinely had been driving it. Santos faces five counts each of prohibited possession of a firearm and carrying a firearm without a license, all felonies. Court records make no mention of the man who allegedly fired the shot.

R(LINK REMOVED), 1/09/17: A Saylorsburg man accidentally shot himself in the leg, while he was cleaning his gun, according to Pennsylvania State Police. Troopers responded to the 100 block of Tittle Road in Ross Township, Monroe County on Monday. The man was cleaning his Kel Tec .22 Magnum pistol when it discharged into his leg, according to police. He was taken to the hospital. Police are still investigating the incident.

(LINK REMOVED), 1/09/17: A Boston Police officer’s gun accidentally went off while he was chasing three suspects wanted in the armed robbery of a convenience store Monday night, Boston Police said. Police say three men held up the Alfa Express Gas Station on Washington Street just before 8:30 PM Monday. They said one of them was armed with a gun, and presented it during the robbery. An officer was nearby at the time and quickly responded. While he was running after the suspects, his gun discharged, firing one shot. Boston Police Chief William Gross said the discharge was accidental in nature. Nobody was hurt during the incident. The officer whose gun went off was taken to the hospital as a precaution. “The officer did a great job,” Chief Gross told reporters at the scene later Monday night. “He’s by himself, he’s facing three suspects, armed, and he still pursued them.” The suspects got away, running down Washington Street. No arrests have been made. Police said there were customers in the store at the time of the robbery.

(LINK REMOVED), 1/09/17: Alexander City School and law enforcement officials are investigating a Monday incident where a student brought a gun to the middle school and it accidentally discharged while another student was looking at it. Alexander City Schools Superintendent Dr. Darrell Cooper said that no one was injured and it doesn’t appear that the student meant any harm. “We are very fortunate that the result wasn’t much worse,” Cooper said. “We are still investigating, but in talking with the students involved it doesn’t appear that he had any intentions of doing any harm. “At this time, indications are that a student brought a small-caliber handgun to Alexander City Middle School. In showing the gun to another student, as that other student was reaching into the backpack to pick it up and look at it, the gun discharged.No one was hit, injured or harmed.” Cooper said that the Alexander City Police Department was called to the scene and responded immediately. Both of the students who were involved were removed from area and detained. Police department officials indicated that the school resource officer was on scene during the occurrence of the discharging of the firearm and took possession of the firearm and placed two juveniles into custody. The incident happened just before 1 PM, officials said and at 2:10 parents began received calls from the system’s phone alert system to inform them of the incident. Many came to the school to check on their children. The schools system and the police department posted alerts on its social media platforms quickly. “We wanted to get the information to parents as quickly as possible to dispel any internet or social media rumors that may be circulating,” Cooper said. “We will take immediate disciplinary action and the police will handle the investigation as far as charges. This is something that we take very seriously and while it doesn’t appear that there was any intent to do harm, the safety of our students is our main concern. “We have zero tolerance for weapons on schools grounds and appropriate action will be taken to minimize the chances of anything like this happening ever again.” Due to the age of the students, no names were released.

(LINK REMOVED), 1/10/17: A juvenile has been arrested on a count of negligent injuring after an 11-year-old walking to his friend's house in the 1100 block of Shilo Street in Baker was shot in the right hand Tuesday, police said. The perpetrator was pulling the weapon out of his pocket when it went off, accidentally injuring the victim around 3:20 PM, said Baker Police Chief Carl Dunn. The victim was transported to a hospital for the non-life threatening injury, Dunn said. Dunn said both juveniles, the victim and the perpetrator, were familiar with the weapon. The victim had photo of the gun on his phone, Dunn said. "They really shouldn't have had access to a pistol anyway," Dunn said, adding that he did not know the age of the juvenile who was arrested. Police have not yet recovered the weapon and do not know who it belonged to, Dunn said. Dunn said late Tuesday night that officers took a number of people into custody for interviewing around 8 PM to determine who was at fault. Police continue to search for the weapon, Dunn said.

(LINK REMOVED), 1/10/17: A 66-year-old La Pine man died early Tuesday of an apparently accidental self-inflicted gunshot wound, Deschutes County sheriff’s deputies said. Deputies and La Pine Fire medics were dispatched at 3:47 AM to a home in the 15000 block of Greenwood Drive on a reported gunshot wound, deputies said. They located James Glenn Overby on arrival with the apparently accidental, self-inflicted gunshot wound. Life-saving efforts were attempted by medics, but were unsuccessful, and Overby died at the scene, deputies said. Sheriff’s detectives arrived later to help in the investigation, which also involved the district attorney’s and medical examiner’s offices.

(LINK REMOVED), 1/10/17: A Corona Police Department officer accidentally fired a pistol at a security guard's car early Tuesday, Jan. 10 authorities say. The security guard was not struck by the single round, according to a news release issued Tuesday evening by the department. Police spokesman Sgt. Paul Mercado said the officer has been placed on paid administrative leave. The officer, along with other officers, responded to a construction site in the 2700 block of Palisades Drive after receiving reports of a suspicious vehicle, the news release said. Not realizing that the car was occupied by an on-duty private security guard, the officers approached the car. That's when one of them unintentionally shot one round at the car. The round went through the front passenger-side door and stopped inside the car's "front passenger area," the news release said. The security guard was in the driver's seat. No arrests were made or citations issued, the news release said. The security guard was interviewed and released. The Police Department's Detective Bureau is investigating the shooting with the assistance of the Riverside County District Attorney's Office.

(LINK REMOVED), 1/11/17: A child is dead after his sister accidentally shot him with a parent’s gun. Police say the shooting happened around 5 PM Pacific time Wesnesday at a home in Chowchilla, California. They say the young girl, who was under the age of 6, somehow got hold of the gun and shot her 1-year-old brother in the head. Officers told KSFN that the mother was home at the time. She is a 16-year veteran of the California Department of Corrections and Rehabilitation. Police Lt. Jeff Palmber says this tragedy was preventable. “Well obviously, the young child was able to have some sort of access to a firearm. That’s still part of the investigation. We’re not sure exactly how everything transpired,” he said. “Most kids are very curious, and if things like that being left around are obviously a huge danger.” It’s unknown how the child got the gun. So far, no charges have been filed.

(LINK REMOVED), 1/11/17: A woman in Foxhome, Minnesota suffered an accidental gunshot wound to her stomach Wednesday morning and had to be flown by air ambulance to Sanford Hospital in Fargo for treatment. The Wilkin County Sheriff’s Office received an emergency call at approximately 9:19 AM Jan. 11 about the accident. The victim, Samantha Pazdernik, was at a residence at 3562 320th Ave. in Foxhome. She appeared to be attempting to put the handgun into a holster when it fired, a release from the sheriff’s office states. Pazdernik is currently in Sanford Hospital in stable condition. In addition to the Wilkin County Sheriff’s Office, rescue responders included Foxhome Rescue, Breckenridge Ambulance Service and Sanford Air Medical.

(LINK REMOVED), 1/11/17: The Raleigh Police Department says a 44-year-old man has died after accidentally shooting himself while getting out of a car in the 6500 block of Creedmoor Road Wednesday morning. It happened around 8 AM. Investigators have not identified the man, but coworkers identified him as Andy Moore - the CEO of networking company Iasis and a father of two. Police say there are no signs of foul play.

(LINK REMOVED), 1/11/17: An adult male has died after accidentally shooting himself, according to Covington Police Chief Lee Harmon. Harmon said the man was planning to go target shooting with his brother when the incident happened inside a Regency Courts apartment. The man, whose identity has not been released, died after being transported to the hospital. Chief Harmon said there were five people in the house when it happened, three adults and two children. The incident remains under investigation. UPDATE: The Miami County coroner’s office identified the man who accidentally shot himself on Wednesday as David Gargrave. He was 33 years old.

(LINK REMOVED), 1/11/17: A 22-year-old city man who was wounded in the 4th Ward on Wednesday night got some bad news while he was being cared for at a hospital. The man, Keith DeVita, ended up being arrested and charged with illegal weapons possession and violating a law that bans convicted felons from having guns, police said. It turns out DeVita’s wound was self-inflicted; he accidentally shot himself in the leg, according to the city's police director, Jerry Speziale. The incident happened at an apartment building on Governor Street at about 9:55 pm, police said. DeVita was taken to Saint Joseph’s Regional Medical Center for treatment, and is currently in stable condition, Speziale said. He is also in police custody, according to the director. "The men and women of the special investigations unit are extremely well-versed in their abilities to see situations for what they are, and anyone that believes they can fool them is fooling themselves,” Speziale said. Police did not disclosed details of DeVita’s previous conviction.

(LINK REMOVED), 1/11/17: A McComb man is being transferred to University of Mississippi Medical Center after being shot in the arm in a hunting accident this morning, according to a Lincoln County Sheriff’s Department spokesman. Jerry Blackshear, 65, was struck in the left forearm by a bullet from a .308-caliber rifle around 6 AM. Chief deputy Johnny Hall said Blackshear was at a hunting camp on Reeves Road in southern Lincoln County. “He had his rifle on his rack on his four-wheeler. He grabbed the gun off the hunting rack, and it wasn’t on safety,” Hall said. “It went off and hit the lower part of his arm, his elbow.” Blackshear apparently grabbed the gun by the barrel. He used his phone to call for help and was taken by ambulance to Southwest Mississippi Regional Medical Center. Lane Ball of the Mississippi Department of Wildlife, Fisheries and Parks said the incident is a reminder to hunters to be safe. “When you’re on a four-wheeler, there’s no reason to have your gun loaded,” Ball said.

(LINK , 1/11/17: Perry County sheriff's deputies arrested an Old Appleton man and his girlfriend Wednesday after he accidentally shot himself in the shoulder in a Delta church parking lot Tuesday, deputies said. The Perry County Prosecuting Attorney's Office charged Eric S. Lindsay, 25, with first-degree burglary, stealing a weapon, second-degree burglary, misdemeanor first-degree trespassing and misdemeanor theft of less than $150. His bond was set at $5,000 cash or surety. The prosecuting attorney also charged Heather A. Bacon, 32, of Perryville, Missouri, with second-degree burglary, misdemeanor trespassing and theft of less than $150. Her bond was set at $5,000 cash or surety. Cape Girardeau County sheriff's deputies were alerted to a woman who ran screaming from a parked vehicle about 10 PM at Amen Center in Delta, according to a probable-cause statement filed in the case by Perry County sheriff's deputy Michael J. Schamburg. Cape Girardeau County sheriff's deputy Zach Snyder found Lindsay with a bullet wound in his shoulder while sitting in the front passenger seat of a 1997 Mercury Grand Marquis, Schamburg wrote. Snyder retrieved a Springfield Armory 9 mm handgun below Lindsay's seat and determined Lindsay shot himself, according to the statement. Snyder ran the gun through a database and discovered it was stolen, Schamburg wrote. The gun was reported stolen Jan. 5 by a woman living in the 200 block of Apple Creek Lane, in Perryville, Schamburg wrote. She said the gun was missing from her top dresser drawer after she noticed a draft in her house from an open window in her living room, according to the statement. Schamburg wrote he observed pry marks on the bottom part of the widow. The victim later discovered several rolls of quarters, dimes, nickels and dollar coins missing from her residence, according tot he statement. Neighbors in the 400 block of Apple Creek Lane said Lindsay and Hooper stayed with them Jan. 2 but left Jan. 3, and a footprint in the snow matched one of Lindsay's as described by a neighbor, Schamburg wrote. Lindsay admitted when he was interviewed by deputies Wednesday he broke into the residence in the 200 block of Apple Creek Lane, according to the statement. He said he stole the handgun and a cash box from the bedroom and a Coca-Cola and water from the refrigerator, Schamburg wrote.

(LINK REMOVED), 1/11/17: Grandview High School was placed on an external lockdown Wednesday morning. At approximately 8:55 AM a gun was discharged accidentally in a P.E. locker room, according to the school officials. They said all students are safe and no one was injured. The school said students were evacuated from the area and held in their classrooms while police were called to investigate. “The safety of our students and staff is our top priority,” said Sheba Clarke, public relations coordinator for the school district. “Currently an investigation is in process and student discipline will take place according to board policy and statute.“

(LINK REMOVED), 1/12/17: A Kansas City motorist told police he was shot and robbed of his wallet early Thursday when he tried to give money to a person who appeared to be homeless. Officers were called to a hospital around 12:30 AM on a reported shooting. The victim told officers that he was driving in the area of 23rd Street and Topping Avenue when he stopped for a red light, police said. The motorist said a person who had a sign and appeared to be homeless approached his vehicle. The victim pulled out his wallet to give the man some money but the pedestrian reached into the vehicle and tried to take the motorist’s wallet. The men struggled over the wallet. The victim grabbed his pistol. He accidentally shot himself in the leg during the struggle. The pedestrian ran away. The victim was later taken to a hospital in a private car where he was treated for an injury that was not life threatening.

(LINK REMOVED), 1/12/17: A New Hampshire lawmaker says she's "mortified" after her loaded gun fell onto the floor during a public hearing on the merits of full-day kindergarten. Republican Rep. Carolyn Halstead, of Milford, says the gun fell off her waistband as she rushed to take her seat Thursday at a House Education Committee meeting. She says her backpack caught on the gun as she took it off. It did not go off, and observers say the hearing carried on without disturbance. Halstead says she quickly put the gun into her bag. It's not a first-time occurrence at the Statehouse. Former Republican Rep. Kyle Tasker dropped his gun during a 2012 committee hearing. It's legal to carry guns on the Statehouse grounds. Halstead says she is licensed to carry her gun concealed.

(LINK REMOVED), 1/12/17: A woman suffered serious injuries after a shooting Thursday morning in Williamsburg. Police say they responded to a reported shooting around 9 AM on Mt. Morgan Road and found Natasha Archer on the ground. She was shot in the shoulder. Archer was flown to the University of Tennessee Medical Center for serious injuries where she is stable. Police say the shooter is Chris Creekmore, but it may have been accidental. Nearby Williamsburg Independent School went under lockdown for a short time after the shooting. Police have not arrested anyone.

(LINK REMOVED), 1/12/17: A man working with a contracted road cleanup crew along 1-10 was hospitalized Thursday afternoon after a gun he found in a ditch discharged. How the gun went off is still being investigated, said Leon County Sheriff’s Office Spokesman Lt. Grady Jordan. The man is in stable condition. How the gun ended up in a ditch on the shoulder of the east-west highway is also being investigated. Even as LCSO investigators lined the westbound highway around midday, officials were trying to determine what led to the shooting. Jordan said the crew, contracted to pick up trash for the Florida Department of Transportation, found the gun. The crew's conversion van was roped off inside the crime scene tape erected by investigators. LCSO detectives photographed the scene and marked evidence in the ankle-high grass while the crew of about a half-dozen sat waiting.

(LINK REMOVED), 1/12/17: Tempe police have identified the woman who died after being shot in the chest Thursday night as 21-year-old Kathrina Durham. Durham was taken to the hospital in critical condition after she was shot by her live-in boyfriend, Bryan McCartney, 25, at their apartment near Kyrene and Elliot roads, according to Sgt. Josie Montenegro, a Tempe Police Department spokeswoman. Police said McCartney grabbed his gun when someone who he didn't initially recognize knocked on the apartment door. After realizing it was just another roommate, police said McCartney was "in the process of making his gun safe" when it discharged and hit Durham. McCartney was arrested and booked into jail on suspicion of manslaughter.

(LINK REMOVED), 1/12/17: A 19-year-old man was arrested Tuesday after he accidentally shot himself in the leg while on a break from his job at a Colorado Springs car dealership, police said. At about 1:49 PM, police were called to a dealership on the 700 block of Automotive Drive. The employee, Daniel Starkman, was allegedly handling his personal handgun alone in his car when he inadvertently discharged the weapon, said Lt. Robert Weber of Colorado Springs police. Starkman was taken to an area hospital. He was arrested on suspicion of prohibited use of a weapon, served court papers and released, Weber said.

(LINK REMOVED), exact date unknown: People in the Montana Vista area tell KFOX14 bullets continue to hit their houses. But for one homeowner, its finally hit too close to home. "We were asleep. I didn't hear it but she did and what it was a big bullet that went right through our window. Our living room window,” Gerardo Garza said. Garza, who has been living in the Montana Vista area for 20 years said bullets have been hitting his home forever the last 10 years, but this year it's gotten a lot worse. "Unfortunately, we keep asking the authorities what they are going to do about it and they say there's nothing they can do about it," Garza said. Sheriff's deputies told Gerardo that the bullet came through the double-pane glass window at head level through the double pain glass window. If somebody had been in this room at the time, they could've been killed. "My main concern is my family,” Garza said. “This, the property, is no big deal. I can buy the window. If they hit one of us, it'd be a different deal." El Paso county commissioner Vince Perez knows this is a problem. He's trying to get no-trespassing signs approved so deputies can try and bring an end to the issue. He says current laws on the books aren't helping fix the issue either. "The key component is tougher enforcement,” Perez said. “But we can't have that tougher enforcement if law enforcement doesn’t have the tools to move forward with the case and that has really been the difficulty." Perez hopes a change to the state law can be made to help those people like Garza. "Here's the proof that people are shooting into our houses. It's not right, man,” Garza said. “This is just not right."

(LINK REMOVED), 1/13/17: What started as a roadway altercation ended in shots fired along Caviar Court on Friday night. Officers responded shots fired in the 3800 block of Caviar Court at around 11:39 PM. After further investigation, police found that the shot was accidentally fired during an fight between two men. Apparently, one of the guys involved felt slighted in traffic, so he followed the other person home off Caviar Court and began to fight him in the front yard. The driver was cited for misdemeanor harassment for following the other individual home. Police are still unsure as to how the gun got brought out during the fight. This is an ongoing investigation.

(LINK REMOVED), 1/13/17: A West Des Moines man accidentally shot a handgun through a basement ceiling and struck his mother who was sleeping upstairs, according to a news release. Gage Kyran Mauk, 21, of West Des Moines, was arrested after he called 911 on Friday morning, saying he accidentally struck his mom, 43-year-old Jennifer Mary Carter. He told investigators he was "manipulating" a handgun in the basement when it shot off at their home in the 300 block of 18th Street. The round traveled through the basement ceiling, through the bed his mom was sleeping in and struck her. Carter suffered non-life threatening injuries and was transported to a hospital. A search warrant was conducted at the home, and Mauk was charged with reckless use of a firearm causing serious injury, possession of schedule I narcotics and two counts of possession of schedule IV narcotics. Mauk was charged with two counts of possession of a controlled substance first-offense in October.

(LINK REMOVED), 1/13/17: A 10-year-old Carthage girl died on Friday night at Mercy Hospital Joplin after suffering what police said was an apparent accidental gunshot wound. Carthage police were called shortly before 2 PM Friday to a home in the 1000 block of James Street, where they found the girl unconscious. Officers "rendered aid to the 10-year-old female juvenile victim until Carthage Fire (Department) and Mercy EMS took over," police Chief Greg Dagnan said. The child was taken by ambulance to the hospital, and Carthage police said in a statement issued at 7:30 PM Friday that she was in critical condition. By 8:30 PM, they had received word of her death, Dagnan said. Dagnan said Saturday that “all the evidence and interviews we’ve done so far point to” an accidental shooting. Three minors of various ages were present in the home at the time of the incident; like most districts in the area, Carthage had closed its schools on Friday in anticipation of Winter Storm Jupiter. Dagnan declined to comment on whether any of the other children were involved in the incident. The handgun involved originated in the home, but police have not yet determined to whom it belonged, Dagnan said. Dagnan said his department will not release the girl’s identity or the owner of the handgun until Monday, when he expects an autopsy to conclude that the death was a "tragic accident." Dagnan declined to elaborate further on the circumstances of the shooting until the autopsy had been completed. The department continues to collect evidence and interview people involved in the incident. (LINK REMOVED), 1/13/17: A Campbellsville woman died Friday afternoon at a Bell Avenue residence from a gunshot wound the Campbellsville Police Department says was probably accidental. Taylor County Coroner Daniel Cook pronounced Mindi Keith, 33, dead at the scene of the shooting on 212 Bell Ave., according to a Campbellsville Police Department report. Police say the shooting took place shortly after 3 PM on Friday. While the case is still under investigation, the police at this time believe the shooting was accidental; an unnamed person was cleaning a firearm when they shot Keith, the police report says. An obituary stated that Keith, a member of Robinson Creek Baptist Church, was a cashier at All Star Truck Stop and had spent time volunteering as a Girl Scout leader. She was married to Randy Keith. “She loved all animals, but especially her fur baby, Hooch,” according to the obituary. “Although Mindi had many things she enjoyed, spending time with her daughter, Rebecca, was number one.” Her funeral was on Tuesday at Parrott & Ramsey Funeral Home.

(LINK REMOVED), 1/14/17: Authorities say a man accidentally was shot while trying to help kill a buffalo at a south-central Kansas meat-processing business. The Reno County Sheriff’s Department says Duane Helms of Moundridge was wounded in the leg shortly before 12:30 PM Friday at Yoder Meats in Yoder. Authorities say Helms was assisting a Yoder Meats employee in trying to shoot a buffalo so the animal could be butchered. The sheriff’s department says a Yoder Meats employee with a rifle was atop a ladder, trying to shoot a buffalo confined in a trailer, when the animal turned, jarring the ladder and knocking the employee off balance. That’s when the rifle discharged, shooting Helms. The department did not immediately disclose Helms’ medical status Saturday.

(LINK REMOVED), 1/14/17: A 70-year-old man accidentally shot himself in the leg last weekend at a firing range in Fall River, police reported. The victim was transported to Rhode Island Hospital with what was described as a non-life-threatening gunshot wound to one leg, Fall River police Lt. Ronald Furtado said. The incident occurred around 11:30 AM Saturday at the firing range at 1 Adirondack Lane. Furtado said several Fall River police officers were at the range when the victim shot himself. Furtado said the victim was either holstering his weapon or removing it from the holster when a piece of clothing became stuck to the firearm, causing the accidental discharge. Police officers at the scene provided first aid until paramedics arrived and transported the victim to Rhode Island Hospital, Furtado said.

(LINK REMOVED), 1/14/17: An accidental shooting at a Corona-area gun range left a man dead on Saturday, Jan. 14, sheriff's officials say. The shooting occurred just before noon at Raahauge Shooting Enterprises, 14995 River Road near Corona, said Riverside County sheriff's Deputy Mike Vasquez. Responding deputies found an adult male suffering from a gunshot. He was transported to a local hospital, where he was pronounced dead, Vasquez said. The gun range was closed for the afternoon while the Sheriff's Department conducted its investigation.

Emergency responders from local fire departments are rushing to meet the pickup. The Humboldt County Sheriff’s Department is also responding to the incident. UPDATE 9:35 p.m.: The ambulance met up with the pickup carrying the wounded man and is now transporting him.

(LINK REMOVED), 1/14/17: Reno police say a local man has been arrested in the apparently accidental shooting of another man in a hotel room. Police say detectives determined that 23-yar-old Deandre Richie was handing the firearm early Saturday morning when it discharged, fatally wounding the victim in the chest. Police also say that although there was no altercation or malicious intent by Richie to shoot the victim, he was arrested on suspicion of involuntary manslaughter as well as possession of a stolen firearm and carrying a concealed weapon. Richie remains jailed and it's not immediately known whether he has an attorney who could comment on the allegations. The victim's identity was not released.

(LINK REMOVED), 1/14/17: Deputies responded to a call about a shooting incident around 11:15 PM on Saturday at a house located at 11439 60th Terrace North in Seminole. Detectives with the Crimes Against Children responded to the scene to investigate after a 17-year-old victim was reported with a gunshot wound from a handgun, along with three other male juveniles. The victim was sent to be treated at the Bayfront Medical Hospital. 17-year-old Jacob McMann told deputies that the shooting happened as a result of a home invasion robbery attempt and that the juveniles did not know who shot the victim. After detectives had an opportunity to talk to the juvenile witnesses, it was discovered that the teens had been smoking marijuana and McMann was playing with the handgun when he accidentally pulled the trigger. Deputies also discovered that the gun used was reported as stolen following a home burglary in the area on December 9. McMann was also on probation for possession of a controlled substance, according to the Pinellas County Sheriff's Office. McMann has been charged with multiple charges, including delinquent possession of a gun and ammunition, negligence, resisting arrest via obstruction, and a felony count of violation of probation. Detectives are investigating for further details.

(LINK REMOVED), 1/14/17: A typical hunting trip turned into a nightmare on Saturday for one Upstate man. Sheriff Taylor of the Union County Sheriff's Office confirmed that a man from Union, South Carolina was wounded during a hunting trip accident in the area. Family of the victim says the man was shot in the abdomen, thigh and lower part of his back. They say it was a 12-year-old boy who accidentally shot the man. According to the victim's Mother- in-law, they were all quail hunting on the his land when the incident happened. The victim's family says that he was taken first to Union Hospital before being transported by EMT to Spartanburg Regional Trauma following the shooting. Luckily, Sheriff Taylor said the victim's injuries were non-life threatening, noting that had already been treated at a hospital and released.

(LINK REMOVED), 1/14/17: Police believe a 21-year-old Kankakee man accidentally shot himself in the leg early Saturday morning in the northeastern part of the city. Riverside Medical Center informed police at about 1 AM that a man had been shot in his upper left leg. The patient said he had been shot not far from his home. Jay Etzel, investigations commander of the Kankakee Police Department, said evidence suggests the shooting was self-inflicted. Police have not recovered a firearm, and the victim does not have a registered FOID card. The investigation is ongoing.

(LINK REMOVED), 1/14/17: Toledo police have arrested a 19-year-old man accused of shooting and killing a 14-year-old Thursday night. Officers were called to the 1500 block of East Broadway, near Oakdale just after 7 PM. According to police, Dominique Alexander, 14, had been shot at least once. He was taken to St. Vincent's Hospital where he later died. During the investigation, officers arrested Leonard Temple, 19, a friend of the victim. He's charged with reckless homicide, child endangering and tampering with evidence. Though, police charged Temple with reckless homicide, they know he didn’t plan it and don’t believe he wanted to do it. But what he was doing at the time when the gun went off was wrong. “More of an unfortunate set of circumstances than anything else,” Lt. Joe Heffernan said. “Yet again, we have another young life lost because of an unsecured gun in the home and falls in the wrong hands and is mishandled, and now, we have a 14-year-old dead.” Police are still working to determine who was the owner of the gun and why it was unsecure and left within reach of Temple. Alexander was an eighth grader at East Broadway Elementary School. A TPS spokesperson says grief counselors are on hand at the school for students and staff. Temple is currently being held in jail on a $500,000 bond. He will be back in court on Jan. 17. Regardless of the answers police are looking for, Alexander is the third, young life lost in Toledo within a month, after a gun has been left out in a home. It is the second homicide of the year for the city of Toledo. The police department recently purchased gun locks and are working to have an event to get them out to those who need them. Police said the trio broke into a home around 11:30 PM Saturday in the 6800 block of Parish Road. Authorities said during the attempted robbery, one of the teens accidentally shot himself in the leg. He was taken to UC Medical Center from the scene. His condition was not immediately available. The two others were arrested.

According to the Defiance County Sheriff's's Office, Matthew Lawson, 21, 1000 Ralston Ave., accidentally shot himself in the leg with a firearm, at around 4:30 AM at 1507 Mustang Drive in Noble Township. He was taken by the Defiance Fire Department to ProMedica Defiance Regional Hospital before being flown to Toledo Hospital with a non-life threatening injury, according to a sheriff’s deputy. Lawson was listed in “critical” but stable condition Saturday night. No charges were filed.

(LINK REMOVED), 1/14/17: A Crossville man has been charged in the shooting death of a woman in his home early Saturday morning. Michael Dale, 26, got in an altercation with another man inside his home on the 1000 block of Old Mail Road in Crossville. During the fight, Dale fired a shotgun inside the house. Projectiles from the gunshot went through an interior wall, hitting and killing 21-year-old Kelsey Nicole Brady in the next room. Dale is charged with aggravated assault resulting in death, reckless homicide and aggravated assault. As of yesterday, Dale was being held in the Cumberland County Jail on $200,000 bond. The arrest was the result of a joint investigation by the Tennessee Bureau of Investigation and the Crossville Police Department.

(LINK REMOVED), 1/14/17: A Tishomingo County boy is recovering from what appears to be an accidental gunshot wound. The Tishomingo County Sheriff’s Department was called to the North Mississippi Medical Center–Iuka on Saturday about a person who had been shot. After talking with family members, deputies discovered that the juvenile male and a brother had been target shooting with a 9 mm pistol. When the victim attempted to disassemble the weapon, he accidentally shot himself in the abdomen. The victim was transported Le Bonheur Children’s Hospital where he underwent surgery and was listed in critical condition. The incident is being treated as an accidental shooting, and no charges are being filed at this time.

(LINK REMOVED), 1/14/17: A Valdosta man has been arrested after allegedly shooting a man and then accidentally shooting himself during an altercation at a liquor store Saturday night. At approximately 9:40 PM, Lowndes County E-911 received a disturbance call for service at a local business. Employees with the “Hill Street Booze” (414 E Hill Avenue) reported that two subjects were arguing and that one possibly had a firearm, said Lt. Adam Bembry with the Valdosta Police Department. “Uniformed patrol units with the Valdosta Police Department were dispatched to the incident location to investigate. While en route, a report of shots fired was also received through the 911 dispatcher,” Bembry said. “Patrol units arrived on scene but did not locate any injured subjects. Witnesses advised that possibly two subjects had been shot but were no longer on scene.” Investigators reportedly learned that the victim had been transported to the Emergency Room by a friend. VPD Detectives and Crime Scene Technicians with the Valdosta/Regional Crime Lab responded to the scene to assist in the investigation, Bembry said. “Through the investigation, it was learned that the offender, Leroy Brown, got into a verbal altercation with a customer in the store. The customer attempted to leave the premises to avoid Brown; however, detectives determined that Brown pulled out a pistol and shot the subject in the arm,” said Bembry. “Witnesses to the incident attempted to physically restrain Brown after shooting the customer. While they were struggling over the gun, Brown’s gun discharged a second time, striking Brown in the leg.” Brown was reportedly found at a private residence shortly after the altercation with a gunshot wound to his leg. He was taken to the Emergency Room as well for treatment and then booked into the Lowndes County Jail on multiple charges, reports stated. Leroy Brown, 58, now faces charges of Aggravated Assault (Felony), Aggravated Battery (Felony), Possession of a Firearm During the Commission of a Crime (Felony) and Criminal Damage to Property (Felony). “The Valdosta Police Department commends the citizens who attempted to restrain the offender in this case from continuing to discharge his firearm in an attempt to commit further violence. The witnesses in this case who assisted Valdosta Police Officers while investigating are also recognized,” said Bembry.

(LINK REMOVED), 1/14/17: 23-year-old Rio Grande City man was arrested over the weekend on two active warrants following his treatment for a self-inflicted, accidental gunshot wound in the men’s room of the Jaguars Gold Club. Juan Trevino reportedly gave Ector County Sheriff’s Office authorities a false name during his account of what happened Saturday night at the club. Trevino reportedly claimed a Hispanic man he argued with at the parking lot shot at him twice, leaving him with a gunshot wound to his left thigh, Sgt. Gary Duesler said Tuesday. But a sheriff’s official went back to the Jaguars Gold Club, reviewed several pieces of surveillance footage and found nothing that corroborated what Trevino told authorities. A spent bullet casing from a .38 Smith & Wesson gun was found in his clothes and Trevino reportedly told sheriff’s authorities later that he didn’t want to say anything further because he was under the influence, Duesler said. At some point Trevino reportedly told authorities that he accidentally shot himself in the bathroom and that one of his cousins he attended the club with dialed 911, Duesler said. A sheriff’s deputy Saturday said that a witness tried taking Trevino to the hospital but apparently got lost and ended up near an industrial site at Proctor Avenue and Cargo Road. Trevino was taken by ambulance to Medical Center Hospital for treatment of his injury and was released. Trevino, 124 Woods Brothers Road, was arrested on one warrant out of Hidalgo County that revoked his probation on a charge of driving while intoxicated. The second warrant was out of Cameron County on a burglary to a vehicle charge, Duesler said. Trevino was being held Tuesday at the Ector County Detention Center on no bond for either of the two warrants.

Dallas homeowner in shootout with attempted armed robbers

A Dallas homeowner found himself in the middle of a shootout with attempted armed robbers Saturday morning.

Terry Morgan was fast asleep in his Oak Cliff home on Lea Crest Drive when he was startled from bed by a rattling noise at his front door.

When he looked at his home security monitor he saw two men at his front door, one of them armed.

"I immediately jumped up, and grabbed my weapon, and came here and aimed my weapon towards the door because I thought they were on their way in," said Morgan.

Man expected to survive after shooting himself amid standoff with Putnam sheriff’s deputies

A standoff between a gunman and Putnam County sheriff’s deputies in Bardin came to an end Friday evening when authorities said the man shot himself in the shoulder.

The 65-year-old man, whose name has not been released, was taken to Orange Park Medical Center, but he’s expected to survive, according to a Sheriff’s Office spokesman.

Authorities do not anticipate the man will be charged, Capt. Hancel Woods told the Times-Union.

Police: 4-year-old shot, killed while playing with mother's boyfriend's gun
Boyfriend originally told police boy hit head on table, APD says

AUBURNDALE, Fla. - A 4-year-old died from a gunshot wound Friday evening, the Auburndale Police Department said.

Police said they responded to the 100 block of Lakeside Hills Loop in Auburndale around 10 p.m.

Officers said they were originally told that a 4-year-old boy had hit his head on a table and was badly injured. Upon their arrival, officers and arriving emergency medical responders found the boy, Avion Weaver, with a gunshot wound to his cheek.

Weaver was transported to Arnold Palmer Children's Hospital, where he was later pronounced dead.

Officials said the investigation revealed that Weaver was in his family's apartment apparently watching television alone while his mother's boyfriend, Demeko Robinson, 26, was outside in the parking lot with friends.

Shortly after 10 p.m., Robinson went into the apartment and found Weaver heavily bleeding, police said. Neighbors reported hearing what they thought sounded like a gunshot around the same time.

"It is apparent that Avion found Robinson’s loaded pistol and while handling it, he accidentally shot himself in the face," Auburndale police said.

One dead after weekend shooting, Bowling Green man arrested

BOWLING GREEN, Ky, (WBKO) -- A man was arrested Sunday after a shooting in a restaurant's parking lot.

The Bowling Green Police Department was called to Greenview Hospital at 8:34 pm, where 22-year-old Victor Rangel Orozco died from a gunshot wound to his torso.

Witnesses said the shooting took place in the parking lot of the Puerto Vallarta on Scottsville Road.

James Garcia, 21, told police an unknown person had shot his friend, but later changed his story and admitted he was sitting in a vehicle behind Orozco looking at a handgun he was trying to buy from him.

Garcia led police to a trash can on Woodhurst Drive where he had thrown the gun away. The gun's serial number had been removed.

Garcia was arrested and charged with manslaughter 2nd degree, tampering with physical evidence and possession of a defaced firearm.

TWIN FALLS — A Twin Falls man has been arrested and charged with involuntary manslaughter in the Thursday-afternoon shooting of a woman at the State Apartments on Second Avenue North.

Brandon S. Smithson, 26, is charged in the death of roommate Katrina D. Budden, 20, of Twin Falls. Police officers were dispatched to 232 Second Ave. N. for a reported shooting and found Budden inside the apartment building with a gunshot wound to her head.

Budden was taken to St. Luke’s Magic Valley Medical Center, where she died from her injuries. The Twin Falls County coroner scheduled an autopsy for Monday.

Police say two neighbors were in Budden and Smithson’s apartment when the shooting happened. The group was sitting and talking when Smithson offered to show them his other roommate’s guns. The first was an AR-15 rifle; the second was a Remington shotgun.

“…when Smithson came back into the living room, he racked the shotgun and suddenly shot Budden as she was sitting in the chair,” an officer wrote in court records. One of the neighbors told police Smithson dropped the shotgun on the floor and began screaming that it was an accident.

Smithson told police he was holding the gun at his waist when he racked open the shotgun and checked to make sure the gun was empty, then closed the action and pulled the trigger. The gun went off, and a round struck Budden in the head.

“Smithson said he dropped the shotgun on the floor, called 911 and tried administering first aid to Budden,” court records say. “Smithson said he had done the same sequence in the past, and after racking the gun, he would pull the trigger and hear the metal click.”

He told police he was sure the gun was empty.

For the life of me I cannot understand how someone shoots themselves while trying to clean their gun. Because not only should someone always check to see if a gun is loaded if they are cleaning it the part that needs to be cleaned is the action and they would have to open the action to do that and if it was loaded it would be clearly visible. But none the less it seems to happen all the time.

The incident was reported in the 6800 block of Chambersburg Road around 4:40 a.m.

Initial reports indicate a man was cleaning a gun when it discharged, and shot him in the hand.

A man accidentally shot himself in the hand while cleaning his gun at a Greenwood home early Thursday.

Police were called to an apartment in the 900 block of Kings Mill Road in Polo Run Apartments just before 1 a.m. where a man had accidentally shot himself in the hand, according to the Greenwood police report.

The man told officers he had accidentally shot himself while cleaning his gun, the report said.

The officer treated the man’s wound and then emergency workers took over treatment, the report said.

Another kind of gun accident that is far more common now is law enforcement people accidentally shooting themselves. And studies attribute the increase in accidents to law enforcement switching over to semi-automatic pistols. Especially Glocks which only have a safety on the trigger.

OSHP trooper injured in accidental shooting

HEATH, OH (WCMH) — An Ohio State Highway Patrol trooper shot himself in the leg Wednesday while at the Heath Police department, according to the Highway Patrol.

The shooting happened around 7:30pm Wednesday at the Heath Police Department at 1287 Hebron Road.

According to a patrol spokesperson, the shooting happened while a trooper was attempting to holster his service weapon.

The Trooper was taken to a Columbus area hospital by medical helicopter. His injuries were described as non-life-threatening.

It was a hell of a week for accidentally shooting yourself. Seventeen people pulled that old trick, between January 15-21. Nine kids were accidentally shot. Four people accidentally shot family members. Three cops or security guards made the list. Three people had gun accidents at the range or otherwise target shooting. Two people accidentally shot themselves while cleaning their guns.

This week’s title tells the tale. A federal contractor providing traffic control and security support during inauguration week accidentally shot himself in the leg while on duty on the 1200 block of Pennsylvania Avenue, NW. But how do you like this for bureaucratic red tape? The security officer in question is an employee of Protective Security Services, a contractor to the Federal Protective Service, the police division of the National Protection and Programs Directorate of the United States Department of Homeland Security. Anyway, he accidentally shot himself in the right leg, which is one of the constituent components of the ambulatory appendages division of the human body.

Thankfully no one was hurt in an incident in Franklin County, FL, when a parent arriving to pick up a student after school accidentally fired a weapon inside the car. Guns are prohibited on school grounds, but I’m sure this law-abiding citizen only brought the gun along as protection, in case of encountering an armed criminal.

The week also saw some considerably more serious tragedy, including yet another “I thought there was an intruder!” story that ended in the death of a 48-year-old wife and mother from North Carolina, accidentally shot and killed by her husband when she returned home from a night shift at work earlier than expected. And a “good guy with a gun” story also went wrong, this time in a Jared jewelry store in Henderson, NV, where a security guard fired his weapon at an armed robber, but missed and instead killed a store employee.

It happened around 8:30 PM Sunday, Jan. 15, in the 7100 block of West Canal Boulevard. Shreveport police say four juvenile males were playing with a gun when the incident occurred. The victim was taken to University Health Hospital where she is listed in stable condition. The identities of the juveniles have not been released. Shreveport police are currently investigating the incident.

Justin Blinsky, JPD night-shift supervisor. Alcohol was likely a contributing factor, and no arrests have been made, he said. At around 2:15 AM Sunday, Stutsman County Communications Center received a 911 call from an individual who was present at the Christmas party who said he witnessed someone showing a rifle when a round was accidentally fired and went into the ceiling, Blinsky said. When the 911 operator requested more information the line disconnected, he said. It took several minutes for police to find where the call originated from, and around eight officers from JPD and Stutsman County Sheriff's Office arrived on scene at around 2:39 AM, he said. The caller left the premises prior to officers arriving to the scene, Blinsky said. Officers went inside to investigate and ensured no one was in need of medical attention, he said. Knowing that a firearm was involved, officers took precautions to secure everyone until the building was declared safe, he said. A search warrant was obtained for the premise and statements were taken, he said. “During the course of the search warrant, evidence was seized and a rifle was located,” Blinsky said. “We believe that just one round was discharged.” Evidence shows that the rifle was likely directed upward when the round was fired, he said. There is no reason to believe that the round went anywhere else but into the ceiling, he said.

An EMS report says two men, both age 25, suffered serious injuries when a gun apparently exploded near the area they were standing. One man suffered injuries to both hands, the other sustained injuries to the face. The two were taken to a nearby trauma center where they have been stabilized.

(LINK REMOVED) , 1/15/17: Eyewitnesses told state police an 11-year-old girl accidentally shot her 12-year-old brother at a shooting range in Centre County, according to court documents released Wednesday. An affidavit of probable cause said the boy was shot in the head with a Hi-Point 9mm pistol after a bullet ricocheted off the ground. Police said the boy has thus far survived life-threatening surgery and is recovering slowly, but he is said to be permanently blind. Officials said that when they responded Sunday to the Pennsylvania Game Commission’s Scotia Shooting Range, they found two separate large pools of blood on one of the auxiliary ranges. They said they also found a box of .380 pistol-caliber ammunition split open in the parking area. Police said the firearm was reported to have been loaned to the victim’s uncle. The firearm allegedly was returned to the owner after the shooting, police said. Police also learned that the father of the children, Anthony Lakeith Vankirk II, 32, of 145 West Clearview Avenue, Ave. in State College, was present at the range, along with his brother and his son. Charges against Vankirk include five felony counts of possession of firearms-prohibited and another five felony counts of firearms carried without a license. Police say he's not allowed to own guns due to a 2004 drug conviction.

(LINK REMOVED) , 1/15/17: A teenager was found dead in a vehicle in Greenwood early Sunday morning. Greenwood police said they found a 16-year-old boy dead in the back seat of a car around 1:30 AM in the 2000 block of Jaden Lane in the Pebble Creek Subdivision. Officers believe the teen, Zachary Edwards, died of a single gunshot wound to the head. While investigators were on scene, two teens, ages 15 and 16 arrived at the Greenwood Police Department with their parents, stating they witnessed the incident. The pair identified the suspect as 18-year-old Isaac Stinemetz of Greenwood. Both teens said Stinemetz and the victim were arguing when he pulled out a gun and shot the victim once. Stinemetz was arrested at his home by police. During questioning, he admitted to shooting the victim, police said, but he claimed he thought the gun was unloaded. Stinemetz told police after the shooting, he and two other juveniles panicked and fled the scene. The gun was dropped into a nearby storm drain and was later recovered by police. He is currently being held without bond on the charge of reckless homicide, a level 5 felony.

The man said he was raising his gun to shoot the squirrel and he must have “accidentally pulled the trigger.” The man was transported to Trident Medical Center with a severe shotgun wound on the top of his left foot.

A judge set bond at $12,125 for John Sitler, 18, on charges including possession of stolen goods and for discharging a firearm into a dwelling. Sitler has been released from jail. His first official court appearance is scheduled for March 3 at 9 AM. Captain David Turno with Aiken Public Safety confirms the shooting happened today on Robinwood Drive in Aiken. A group of friends was playing around with a stolen gun when officers said it was discharged and hit Rebekah Weeks. According to an incident report, the deputy who responded to the shooting said the garage the friends were in smelled of marijuana. Sitler told the deputy he was trying to clear the shotgun when it accidentally went off and hit Weeks in the knee. Sitler told deputies the gun was stolen from a man that owed him some money. According to the incident report, Sitler appeared to be under the influence and he told deputies he smoked at 10 AM. The shooting happened at 10:20 AM on Monday. Weeks is recovering at Augusta University.

Investigators told FOX 5 a 10-year-old boy accidentally shot his 9-year-old brother in the leg. The younger boy went to the hospital with injuries that weren't life-threatening. The shooting happened at a home in the 2800 block of Knollview Drive. Police said there were adults at home, asleep at the time. No word on how the 10-year-old got the gun. So far, no charges have been filed.

Cass County Sheriff deputies were dispatched to the accidental shooting in Milton Township at shortly before 12:30 Monday, Jan. 16, according to a news release from the department. Upon arriving on the scene deputies found Justin Anderson had a non-life-threatening gunshot wound. Anderson's neighbor, 46, had been target shooting with a .223 rifle and one of his rounds missed the back stop, went through a wooded area and hit Anderson, authorities said. The suspect's name is being withheld pending review by the Cass County Prosecutors Office. The news release included a reminder to Cass County residents anyone found negligent in using a firearm safely can be charged with a crime. Proper gun safety includes assuring a proper back stop, shooting toward a safe and unoccupied area and knowing where the rounds are going. The penalty for misuse increases based on the seriousness of the damages caused. The suspect's name in this incident is being withheld pending review by the Cass County Prosecutors Office, authorities said.

Police in North Liberty say the victim was shot in the leg and his condition is stable. Officers are still investigating the circumstances surrounding Monday’s shooting at the Golfview Mobile Home Court. It’s not clear whether the victim, who has not been identified, shot himself or someone else did. Initially, the victim told police that he didn’t know the gunman. A witness reported that a man wearing a dark colored hoodie shot the victim with a handgun and flew on foot through the trailer court. The spokesperson said the man was driving his family southbound on the freeway near Thunderbird Road when he began showing his handgun to family members inside the car. When he tried to remove the bullets from the gun, he accidentally discharged the weapon and the bullet hit him in the right leg. He pulled the vehicle over to the side of the road and the family called 911. Peoria Fire-Medical Department arrived minutes later and treated the victim at the scene and transported him to a local hospital. The case is still under investigation.

At 4:38 PM, officers were dispatched to NorthCrest Medical Center, according to a news release from the Springfield Police Department. The boy had non-life threatening injuries and was released on Tuesday, the release said. The shooting took place at a relative’s home on Central Avenue. The 5-year-old had found a 9 mm handgun in a bedroom and accidentally fired it, hitting the 9-year-old, the release said. (LINK REMOVED) , 1/17/17: A woman was charged with child endangerment Wednesday after her 5-year-old daughter accidentally shot herself inside a home on Chicago’s West Side, police said. The girl accidentally shot herself in the abdomen just after 8 PM Tuesday after getting a hold of a handgun inside a house in the 3700 block of West Ferdinand Street in East Garfield Park, police said. Family members then brought the 5-year-old in to Rush University Medical Center before the girl was transferred to Stroger Hospital, where she was listed in serious condition, police said. Larrinita Starks, 22, was charged with child endangerment after allegedly leaving a firearm unsecured in the presence of a child, police said. After being taken into custody, she was released on bond. She is due in court March 16. Police sources told NBC 5 that Starks is the young girl’s mother. Authorities are still looking into how the little girl got her hands on the firearm, and if the gun was legally owned. From the beginning of 2014 through the first half of 2016, there were 42 children injured or killed in accidental shootings, according to a study by the Associated Press and USA Today, with 30 of those shootings taking place in Chicago.

(LINK REMOVED) , 1/17/17: A Joliet man accidentally fired his pistol while kicking his stepson out of his place, police said. Henry Shelton, 55, reportedly called the cops Tuesday morning after his 30-year-old stepson refused to leave his Glenwood Avenue home. The stepson had been staying there, according to police. When officers arrived, the stepson was on his way out, police said, and left without speaking to the cops. While talking to Shelton, the officers reportedly learned that he and the stepson had argued, and the younger man threatened him. Shelton then went to his bedroom to retrieve his 9 mm pistol, police said, and again told the stepson to beat it. The stepson threatened Shelton a second time, police said, and Shelton tapped the pistol against the younger man’s head. As he pulled the gun away, it reportedly went off and a bullet lodged in a window frame. The stepson decided to leave soon after, police said. Shelton was arrested and booked into the Will County jail.

(LINK REMOVED) , 1/17/17: A man who accidentally shot himself is now a suspect after deputies discovered methamphetamines at a nearby home Tuesday night. Sgt. James Long of the Sheriff’s Temple Station said the man was in stable condition at a hospital. The Sheriff’s Temple Station received a call at 7:30 PM about a gunshot victim in the 5200 block of Walnut Grove Avenue, which is in the unincorporated county area near San Gabriel. People in the house made the call, according to Long. Deputies found a man with a gunshot wound to the abdomen. Lt. Brian Bishop of Operations Safe Streets Bureau, which is the gang unit for the Sheriff’s department, said the man was in front of a home. “He needed medical attention because he shot himself,” Bishop said, adding that it appeared the shooting was accidental. Bishop said deputies went inside the home to look for other possible victims and saw “a large amount of suspected methamphetamines.” He said a gun used in the shooting and ammunition were also recovered. OSS secured a warrant and searched the house. The man has not been arrested or booked. Bishop said charges are pending. Bishop said deputies are still investigating the man’s connection to the house, the drugs and gun.

Tuesday, school officials posted to Facebook a letter sent out by the district explaining the situation. According to the letter, a parent came to pick up their child when the gun went off inside their car. School officials said no one was injured. They said the Franklin County Sheriff's Office is investigating to learn more about how this happened. In the letter, the school district reminds parents that it is "federal violation of the safe schools act to bring a firearm of any kind on school grounds by either adults or children". Regarding the incident, they say quote: "We are deeply committed to not only providing our students with a first-rate education, but to ensuring that our school is a warm, inviting, and safe school. We need help from our community to make this happen."

(LINK REMOVED) , 1/17/17: A 78-year-old Killdeer man may have accidentally fired a gun in his hotel room, according to Bismarck Police. Hotel staff from the Ramkota at 800 S. Third St. reported the gunshot to police on Wednesday morning, after the Killdeer man told them about a bullet hole in his hotel room wall during checkout. Officers found a bullet had been fired from the area near the nightstand through the bathroom wall. The Killdeer man allegedly admitted to accidentally firing the gun the previous night, according to police. The case has been referred to the city attorney for potential charges.

About 2:20 PM, deputies received a report about a man who had shot himself in the stomach in his home in the 14000 block of East 56th Street North, TCSO spokeswoman Casey Roebuck said. The 64-year-old man reportedly was handling a black-powder gun that he believed was unloaded. When he placed the gun onto a table, he was struck in the abdomen by a bullet, Roebuck said. The man called 911 and reportedly attempted to drive himself to the hospital, but dispatchers advised him to stay put. He was met by emergency responders and transported to the St. John Medical Center, Roebuck said. The man was conscious and talking, and his injuries appeared to be non-life-threatening, Roebuck said.

It happened at United States Shooting Academy on 66th Street North east of Highway 75. A deputy on the scene said the man was doing target practice when he went to holster his gun and accidentally shot himself in the leg. An employee of the shooting academy drove the man next door to the police academy about 300 yards away, hoping to find a medic. A medic at the police academy treated the man until EMSA arrived and transported him to an area hospital. This was the second accidental shooting Wednesday in the Tulsa area.

The incident occurred about 1:30 PM. Authorities did not say whether the officer was assigned to a particular building. The Federal Protective Service is investigating.

According to a press release from the sheriff’s office, Benjamin Bond, 41, 133 Morgan Lane, was arrested at Bristol Regional Medical Center, where he was seeking treatment for a wound in his leg. He was charged with aggravated domestic assault and being a felon in possession of a firearm. Bond reportedly came armed to his girlfriend’s father’s house on Myers Lane, hoping to speak with the woman, but her father would not allow Bond into the home. Deputies say he pulled out the handgun and made threats toward the people inside the home. At some point, he allegedly fired the gun, striking himself in the leg and falling down. Victims’ statements to police say he then got back up and threatened to shoot himself in the head, but did not do so. Deputies said he fled the scene before they arrived, but was later found at the hospital. In the vehicle he drove to the hospital, deputies reported finding numerous firearms and illegal drugs. He was transported to the Washington County Detention Center and held on $40,000 bond. He was arraigned Wednesday and remains in custody at the detention center.

"There was no altercation" leading to the 6:45 PM shooting in the 600 block of Rutt Road, township officer Brian Kaiser said. It does not appear the gun was fired in anger. The 61-year-old victim was taken to St. Luke's University Hospital-Fountain Hill with a non-life-threatening wound to his calf, Kaiser said. The victim is a friend of the person believed to have fired the gun, but the investigation was not complete late Thursday, he said. The shooting happened indoors, Kaiser said.

(LINK REMOVED) , 1/19/17: A school bus with students on board traveling on Eulonia Road in the Gresham community of Marion County Thursday afternoon was reportedly struck by gunfire from a shotgun, according to Marion County Sheriff Brian Wallace. Wallace said no students were injured and the shooting of the bus appears to be the result of an accidental discharge. The Marion County School District said it was not a bullet that hit the bus, but rather a buck shot and that the paint is chipped where the bus was hit. Wallace also released the following statement Thursday evening: "Nothing is more important to the Marion County Sheriff’s Office than the safety of children, especially while they are attending, and traveling to and from school. That is why our investigation into a report of a school bus being struck with shotgun pellets while children were on-board received our highest priority. While our investigation into this matter is still on-going, it appears that this was an isolated event which may have involved an accidental discharge of a shotgun in proximity to the school bus in question. Every investigative effort is being made to ensure a full understanding of all of the facts surrounding this matter. Although it appears that this is an isolated event not likely to re-occur, every effort will be made to ensure the safety of all Marion County students and parents, as well as school officials, should feel confident that students will be safe on school buses." A parent with a child on the bus said it was leaving Britton's Neck Elementary School when students heard shots fired. The parent said her daughter told her the bus driver pulled over to make sure everything was okay and no students were hurt. She said the school bus later brought her little girl home. The parent told us the school district sent parents text messages saying there was a problem with the bus , but it was handled appropriately by deputies.

(LINK REMOVED) , 1/20/17: A Goldsboro man accidentally shot and killed his wife early Friday morning when he mistook her for someone trying to break into the home. Wayne County sheriff's deputies were dispatched to the home at 108 Dee Dee Place around 12:30 AM in reference to an accidental shooting. When deputies arrived, they found Gina Williams, 48, lying on the front porch with a gunshot wound to her neck. Billy Williams, 49, was also on the porch, administering first aid to Gina Williams, according to the sheriff's office. EMS arrived on scene, but Gina Williams died. Authorities said Gina Williams was home early from an overnight shift at work and was trying to get in the front door. One of the children inside the home thought someone was trying to break in, and woke Billy Williams. Billy Williams then got a gun from a safe, opened the front door and fired one shot, authorities said. The front porch light was not on. George Ezzell is a neighbor across the road. He said the Williams' are a tight and happy family, well liked in the neighborhood. "You pray for the family, its going to be a tough one," Ezzell said. Authorities are calling this case an accidental shooting, and no charges have been filed.

(LINK REMOVED) , 1/20/17: A 4-year-old child left unsupervised accidentally got ahold of a loaded gun and shot himself in the face in Auburndale, police say. Officers were called Friday night to a home in the 100 block of Lakeside Hills Loop where they said a child was found with a gunshot wound. On Sunday, Investigators said they were initially called to the home for a report of a child hitting their head on a table. When officers arrived, they discovered Avion Cymani Weaver, 4, with a gunshot wound to the cheek. The child was taken to Arnold Palmer Hospital and later died. Investigators said that Avion was inside the family’s apartment watching TV by himself. His mother’s live-in boyfriend, Demeko Desean Robinson, 26, was outside with friends at the time of the incident. “It is apparent that Avion found Robinson’s loaded pistol and while handling it, he accidentally shot himself in the face,” a police release stated. Charges are potentially pending following a complete case review, officials stated.

(LINK REMOVED) , 1/20/17: A 13 year old Franklin County girl remains in the hospital after an accidental shooting. It happened around 7:30 PM on Friday, January 20th. The girl was sitting in a wooded area just off Isolane Road in the Callaway area. She was carrying a loaded gun when it accidentally went off, striking her in her lower back. The girl was taken to Carilion Roanoke Memorial Hospital where she is stable. An investigation revealed the gun she had belonged to her stepfather, Timothy Hale. Hale was arrested and charged with possession of a firearm after being convicted of a felony. He was released on bond on Tuesday.

(LINK REMOVED) , 1/21/17: A Virginia man was charged after he accidentally shot a man during a hunting trip in Page County, according to law enforcement. Sheriff's deputies were called, along with the Virginia Department of Game and Inland Fisheries, to a reported shooting in the Page Valley area on Saturday, Jan. 21. Upon arrival, they discovered Douglas Jessup of Front Royal was accidentally shot in the leg by Huayu Wu of Vienna. The two were duck hunting at the time. Wu was charged with reckless handling of a firearm, according to the Sheriff's Office. Jessup was released from Page Memorial Hospital after receiving treatment for his wound.

(LINK REMOVED) , 1/21/17: A man accidentally shoots himself in the foot while checking a business for intruders Saturday morning. The shooting happened just before 7 AM near 37th Avenue and Camelback. Phoenix police say a woman was opening up her Day Care business when she thought she heard someone in the building. She called her husband to come check the building. The husband and a friend came to check out the day care and the friend that came along, accidently shot himself in the foot. Police say the gunshot wound is not life threatening. No intruders were found in the day care.

(LINK REMOVED) , 1/21/17: A Henderson jewelry store employee who was accidentally killed by a security guard during an attempted robbery has been identified by the Clark County coroner. Kimberlee Ann Kincaid-Hill, 57, was struck in the chest just before 9 PM Saturday when a security guard shot at but missed an armed robber who entered Jared The Galleria of Jewelry, 1071 W. Sunset Road. Kincaid-Hill was taken to Sunrise Hospital and Medical Center, where she died. The coroner ruled her death a homicide. The would-be robber, who was armed with a handgun, ran from the scene empty-handed. He was still at large as of Monday. In a statement Sunday, Henderson police described him as a black man, between 5 feet 6 inches and 5 feet 10 inches tall and weighing about 140 pounds. He was last seen wearing a red-and-black hoodie, black pants, a black mask and a dark-colored hat or beanie. The robber will face murder charges because Kincaid-Hill was killed during the attempted robbery. The security guard will not face charges in connection with the accidental shooting, Henderson police spokeswoman Michelle French said Sunday. Jared posted a statement Sunday on Twitter about Kincaid-Hill: “We are shocked and saddened to learn of the loss of our team member and extend our sympathies to her family, friends and colleagues.”

This time its South Carolina that seems to be shooting itself up with five gun accidents in just the past 6 days.

A man reported to deputies that he accidentally shot himself with a 9mm handgun. The victim said as he unlocked the driver’s side door of his vehicle, the gun fell and he “believes that it struck the running board of his vehicle,” afterwards discharging and striking his right arm. The victim’s mother transported him to the emergency room.

PS This is another kind of gun accident I don't see how it happens. Any modern hand gun should not discharge just because it was dropped.
