Neighbors react to accidental fatal shooting of 3-year-old boy in Horry County

HORRY COUNTY, SC (WMBF) – A 3-year-old boy was killed in an accidental shooting that took place Thursday in the Limestone at Arrowhead community, according to Horry County Coroner Robert Edge.

On Friday, Horry County Deputy Coroner Darris Fowler identified the child as Brooks Steen of the Myrtle Beach area.

The death is under investigation by Horry County police and appears accidental. Edge said the child got a hold of a weapon, which led to the shooting.

Steen was inside the home he shared with his mother and grandfather when he found a gun and accidentally shot himself. Neighbors said his family is left grief stricken.

It is currently unclear how the 3-year-old was able to retrieve the gun and then fire it.

According to neighbors, the little boy's mother picked him up and ran to the house across the street yelling for help following the gunshot.

A neighbor then drove the young boy and his mother to Grand Strand Medical Center’s emergency room. Steen was pronounced dead Thursday afternoon.

According to neighbors, Steen was an only child and his grandfather's only grandchild. Many said they do not understand how a tragedy such as this could happen to what they described as an amazing family.

Online records for the Horry County Police Department state a death investigation was registered at a location on Afton Court. The incident is listed as happening at 12:15 p.m. on Thursday

Following the shooting, officials with the HCPD posted information about firearm safety and the "huge responsibilities" that come with owning weapons.

"Our prayers are with the family and everyone who has to endure such tragedy, including our own personnel," the Facebook post said in part. "However, we would be remiss to not remind everyone of the huge responsibilities associated with owning firearms."

Teen shot in groin wounded himself, North Charleston police say

NORTH CHARLESTON, S.C. (WCIV) —

A North Charleston teen with a gunshot wound to the groin shot himself Friday afternoon, police say.

Police say the boy, 15, told them he and some other kids were playing with firearms at the time. Police initially had been told someone in a blue Honda yelled at the teen before shots were fired.

The incident happened in the 4800 block of Gaynor Avenue, which is near the intersection of Nesbit Avenue and two blocks from Highway 78.

11-year-old Ridgeland child shoots 12-year-old brother in the face

A 12-year-old Ridgeland boy is recovering at Memorial University Medical Center in Savannah, Ga. after his younger brother reportedly shot him in the face.

According to the Jasper Sun Times, the Jasper County Sheriff’s Office responded to a call from the 100 block of Wise Street shortly after 10 a.m. Saturday.

Jasper County Sheriff Chris Malphrus said the boys were playing with their mother’s .9 mm gun as she made breakfast.

The injuries do not appear to be life threatening, Maphrus said.

Man accidentally shot in suburban Delray Beach

A man is hospitalized after accidentally being shot in the abdomen in suburban Delray Beach, according to the Palm Beach County Sheriff's Office.

It happened in the 5000 block of Garfield Road after midnight.

Detectives say witnesses told them the man shot himself by accident.

He was transported to a local trauma center. His condition is not known.

Detectives are continuing to investigate the case.

77-year-old newlywed shoots wife after argument over sleeping arrangements
Says his wife never consummated their marriage

LEHIGH ACRES, Fla. -- Deputies say a 77-year-old new groom told them he shot his new bride in the buttocks, and the bride told Four in Your Corner the situation is a "nightmare."

According to a Lee County Sheriff's Office report, Donald Royce admitted to deputies he shot his wife following an argument over the couple’s sleeping arrangements. He says they’ve been married since August but have yet to consummate their marriage.

"Holy cow, that's ridiculous. A grown adult having a temper tantrum about sex," Royce's neighbor, April Bailey, said.

The couple’s roommate says she heard two gun shots, and when she went to see what happened, Royce pointed the gun at her.

She says she convinced him to let her call to get his wife medical help.

Royce told arriving deputies “I shot her and the gun is in my room.” He later told deputies that he never intended to shoot his wife. He just wanted to scare her by shooting the mattress, and became upset when he realized the gunfire struck her.

His 62-year-old wife was trauma alerted to Lee Memorial Hospital with gunshot wounds to the buttocks and hip.

Royce has been charged with Aggravated Battery.

Four in Your Corner spoke with Royce's wife Tuesday night. She was recovering at home from the two gunshot wounds, and described the situation as a nightmare.

She said she and Royce were together for six years before they decided to get married, and she never thought he was capable of doing something like this.

The main message Royce's wife wants people to take away from her story is that violence toward a woman is never OK.

"A woman should have a right to her own body, regardless of age or marriage status," Bailey said.

Hello. We’re back again. But six of our fellow Americans aren’t. They were killed during the week of January 22nd, by gunshots nobody intended to fire.

In other GunFAIL statistics news for the week, 15 people accidentally shot themselves, six people accidentally fired guns they were cleaning , five minors were accidentally shot, four law enforcement officers accidentally discharged their weapons, three people left their loaded weapons behind in bathrooms or elsewhere in public, two people accidentally fired into their neighbors’ property, and two were accidentally shot while hunting. We also saw four GunFAIL incidents that wounded more than one victim. Special congratulations to Athens, GA and Oak Creek, WI (pop. 35,008), which each made the GunFAIL list twice this week.

Among our many stories this week, both strange and routine, we found the real Bowling Green Massacre, in which someone was actually killed. It didn’t involve terrorists, but it did involve weapons procurement. Specifically, the gun that Victor Rangel Orozco was trying to sell to his friend, James Garcia, in a car in the parking lot of the Puerto Vallarta Mexican restaurant on Scottsville Road. Garcia, thinking the gun was empty (as it should have been when one responsibly passes a weapon to another person for inspection), pulled the trigger (as he should not have done without first verifying that the weapon was safe, even if he’d just seen Orozco do that, which he didn’t). Orozco died, and Garcia was arrested on manslaughter charges. But you’ll never hear about that in the biased media (other than right now, and when local papers reported it).

We also saw the year’s second legislative GunFAIL incident, in which Kansas state representative Willie Dove (R-Bonner Springs) left his loaded pistol behind in a committee hearing room. Kansas legislators were scheduled to begin hearings on a bill relating to concealed carry on state college campuses later that week, which might have made things a little uncomfortable in Topeka. But surely no more so than the news of the K-State student who jumped the gun (no pun intended) and accidentally shot himself in his dorm room with the gun he wasn’t supposed to be allowed to carry on campus until July.

Finally, in case any of you were wondering why we never seem to hear about celebratory gunfire and GunFAIL on the Chinese New Year, your ship has come in. A group of friends celebrating the Lunar New Year in Portland, OR decided that the final hour of the Year of the Monkey might be an appropriate time to examine the AR-15 one of them had handy. It seems that in reloading it, a shot was accidentally fired, and one of their number never did make it to the Year of the Rooster.

Below, you’ll find the full listing of GunFAIL incidents for the week of January 22nd through the 28th.

(LINK REMOVED), 1/22/17: Richland School District Two officials confirmed Monday that a teen accidentally shot and killed over the weekend attended one of the district's schools. Richland County Coroner Gary Watts identified the victim as Jalin Palmer, 17, of Columbia. Palmer, Richland Two officials said, was a student at Ridge View High School. Dr. Brenda Mack, the principal at Ridge View, released a statement saying counselors have been dispatched to campus to help students with the grieving process. "On behalf of all of the students, teachers, and staff at Ridge View, I extend our deepest and heartfelt sympathy to Jalin’s family. He will be missed by his friends and teachers and will always be part of the Blazer Family," Mack said. Deputies with the Richland County Sheriff’s Department said Nicholas Butler, 20, faces a charge of involuntary manslaughter. Deputies responded to a home on the 200 block of Cherrywood Drive just after midnight Sunday morning and found Palmer with a single gunshot wound to his upper body. Deputies initially took two people into custody who were in the home at the time of the shooting, however, only Butler has been charged at this time. Investigators believe the shooting was accidental.

(LINK REMOVED), 1/22/17: The Kansas State student who suffered an accidental, self-inflicted gunshot wound on Jan. 22 was a 19-year-old male who lived in Goodnow Hall, according to a (LINK REMOVED) this morning. K-State Police were called at 8:10 PM on Jan. 22 to the student’s room and determined the injury was related to a firearm discharge. The police are currently investigating criminal charges. According to the (LINK REMOVED) the possession of firearms are prohibited both on campus and in any K-State residence halls. The student, whose name has not been released, was transported to an area hospital for his self-inflicted injuries and his last known condition was stable. No further information will be released by K-State officials, according to their update, because of the ongoing police investigation. K-State’s (LINK REMOVED), which was changed by the university due to Kansas law and was approved by the Regents in December, will go into effect on July 1, 2017. The policy states that no university location will be designated as “prohibiting concealed carry with permanent adequate security measures.” In October 2016, a student (LINK REMOVED). In July 2016, police investigated a (LINK REMOVED). In April 2016, a student veteran (LINK REMOVED).

(LINK REMOVED), 1/22/17: About 10:45 PM Sunday on the West Side, an 18-year-old man accidentally shot himself in West Humboldt Park returning gunfire in a shootout, police said. He told investigators he was standing in the 4200 block of West Iowa Street when someone walked up and fired shots at him. He started shooting back and accidentally shot himself in the middle finger of his left hand. He got himself to Norwegian American Hospital, and his condition was stabilized. No weapon was recovered, sources said.

(LINK REMOVED), 1/22/17: Yorkville Police have ticketed a Yorkville man for accidentally discharging a firearm inside his home. Yorkville Police say Stefan Morgan of Beresford Dr. in Yorkville was cited with an ordinance violation for Unlawful Discharge of a Firearm within City Limits. Police responded to Beresford Dr. around 11:30 PM on Sunday night. Morgan was allegedly cleaning his rifle when the gun discharged and a bullet traveled through the wall and ended up lodged in the stairwell of the neighboring unit. No injuries were reported in the accidental shooting.

(LINK REMOVED), 1/22/17: A man was arrested Sunday after a shooting in a restaurant's parking lot. The Bowling Green Police Department was called to Greenview Hospital at 8:34 PM, where 22-year-old Victor Rangel Orozco died from a gunshot wound to his torso. Witnesses said the shooting took place in the parking lot of the Puerto Vallarta on Scottsville Road. James Garcia, 21, told police an unknown person had shot his friend, but later changed his story and admitted he was sitting in a vehicle behind Orozco looking at a handgun he was trying to buy from him. Garcia believed the gun was empty and pulled the trigger, firing in the back seat Orozco was sitting in. Garcia led police to a trash can on Woodhurst Drive where he had thrown the gun away. The gun's serial number had been removed. Garcia was arrested and charged with manslaughter 2nd degree, tampering with physical evidence and possession of a defaced firearm.

(LINK REMOVED), 1/22/17: A man is hospitalized after being accidentally shot in a southeast Brazos County neighborhood. The call came in around 3 PM Sunday at a home on Early Amber Ct. According to dispatchers he was transported to the hospital with a gunshot wound to the abdomen. Brazos County Sheriff's officials say he underwent surgery Sunday afternoon. Investigators believe he accidentally shot himself while getting into a car.

(LINK REMOVED), 1/23/17: Two local men were injured in an accidental shooting late Monday evening, according to the Longview Police Department. Just before 10:30 PM, police responded to a call in the 2300 block of Ocean Beach Highway. One man, identified as 28-year-old Zacharias Smart of Kelso, was cleaning a gun when it discharged and injured his hand. The bullet exited his hand and stuck the leg of his friend, 29-year-old Kelin Ray of Longview, according to Chris Blanchard, a public information officer with the Longview Police Department. Both men were taken to St. John Medical Center, where they were treated for non-life-threatening injuries, according to Blanchard. Smart was treated and released; Ray was in satisfactory condition Tuesday evening, according to PeaceHealth officials. It is unknown what type of gun was involved.

(LINK REMOVED), 1/23/17: A Mesa 15-year-old remains in extremely critical condition after he was accidentally shot in the chest by a friend. Mesa police report that on January 23, they went to an apartment near Stapley Drive and Main Street in reference to a teenager who has reportedly been shot. The victim’s brother told police that he witnessed the shooting, and saw 20-year-old Ulises Sanchez holding a gun when it went off, striking the victim in the chest. He reportedly told police that appeared to him that the shooting was accidental. Police located Sanchez about two miles away at his family's home near Southern Avenue and Mesa Drive where he went to shower and change clothes, after allegedly hiding the gun in some bushes. Sanchez reportedly told police that he and the victim were drinking alcohol when he accidentally shot the victim while manipulating the gun, according to the police report. He showed police where he hid the gun. Sanchez is being held on a $75,000 bond for underage drinking, unlawful discharge of a firearm and aggravated assault with a deadly weapon.

(LINK REMOVED), 1/23/17: A Bluff Park man who said he left a loaded handgun in a park bathroom near a Hoover school has apologized on Facebook. “No one feels worse than me about this, and I make no excuses,” Jason Rose wrote in a lengthy post on the Hoover Vote Facebook page. “We all make mistakes, and this one was just a really bad one. I can assure you after this experience, it was one I learned from, and will never make again.” The social media response came after Hoover police announced a 9mm Glock handgun had been found Monday afternoon by children in a Blue Ridge Park bathroom, then tossed into the woods. The park is adjacent to Shades Mountain Elementary School. Police said one of the children told his parents who notified police. Rose contacted police after he realized he had inadvertently left the gun in the restroom during a family visit to the park. “Although this situation could have been tragic, investigators determined there was no criminal intent by the owner,” Hoover Capt. Gregg Rector said in the news release. “This incident serves as a reminder that gun owners must act responsibly while exercising their right to carry a weapon. We would also encourage parents to discuss firearms safety with their children, even if there are no weapons in their home.” In the Facebook post, Rose stated he was “extremely grateful that nobody was hurt due to my mistake.” “Nobody wants to leave a pistol unattended, especially at a park. My kids play at that park, so I get it. It was a horrible mistake, that fortunately didn't have a even worse outcome,” Rose said in the post.

(LINK REMOVED), 1/23/17: A patrolman with the Shamokin Police Department is suspended without pay after accidentally discharging his firearm while responding to a burglary alarm in the city last week. Mayor William Milbrand confirmed Patrolman Scott Weaver was suspended. Police Chief Darwin Tobias III confirmed the five-day suspension, along with a one-year probationary period, but would not identify the officer. “There was absolutely no intent to fire the weapon,” Tobias said. “It’s a complete accident.” Weaver was suspended Friday and is eligible to return Wednesday. According Tobias, the patrolman responded to a burglary alarm about 8 AM Jan. 23 at Rob’s Good Time Grill at Market and Spruce streets. In making entry into a basement door, Tobias said the door flung back toward the officer and struck his gun hand causing the weapon to discharge into the ground. No one was in the restaurant’s basement at the time and no one was injured, Tobias said. Tobias said the officer immediately underwent firearm safety training at the scene. “(Weaver) can appeal it to city council if he wants to,” Milbrand said. “I support the chief’s decision.” Tobias said an appeal has not been filed. Shamokin Police has a roster of 10 full-time officers including Tobias.

(LINK REMOVED), 1/24/17: A man was seriously hurt after unintentionally discharging a firearm while hunting in Leesburg. Officers were called around 7 PM to 13400 block of Goodhart Lane in Leesburg Tuesday night. According to Loudoun County Sheriff's Office reports, the man, whose name was not released, was taken to Reston Hospital with serious but non-life threatening injuries.

(LINK REMOVED), 1/24/17: A 4-year-old Tampa child accidentally shot himself in the chest Tuesday with a gun that detectives believe he found unsecured and loaded underneath a dresser, according to law enforcement. Hillsborough County Sheriff's deputies, called at 8:39 AM to a shooting report in a home on the 12500 block of Tinsley Circle in Tampa, found the injured boy, who was transferred to St. Joseph's Hospital. His condition is unknown at this time. Detectives executed a search warrant at the premises and found a Taurus .380 handgun loaded with nine rounds of ammunition, the department said. They also discovered a bag containing white powder that later tested positive for cocaine, deputies said. An adult resident at the address, Akia A. Thomas, 26, was arrested for suspected possession by a convicted felon of a weapon and nine counts of possession of ammunition, unsafe storage of a firearm and possession of cocaine. The department did not disclose the relationship between Thomas and the injured boy.

(LINK , 1/24/17: A 21-year-old woman and a 27-year-old man were both shot in what police said was initially reported as an accidental shooting, Wilmington Police said Wednesday. According to authorities, officers were dispatched at 7 PM on January 24, 2017, to a residence in the 200 block of North Market Street for reports of a possible accidental shooting. When they arrived, they found the woman shot in the abdomen and the male shot in the left hand. Both were treated at the scene by New Castle County Paramedics and transported to Christiana Hospital.

(LINK REMOVED), 1/24/17: An 18-year-old man was shot in the leg Tuesday morning in the West Side Austin neighborhood. The shooting happened at 7:50 AM in the 1700 block of North McVicker, according to Chicago Police. The wound was possibly self-inflicted, police said. The man’s condition and which hospital he was taken to weren’t immediately known.

(LINK REMOVED), 1/24/17: A Kansas lawmaker left a loaded firearm in a committee room at the Capitol on Tuesday. Rep. Willie Dove, R-Bonner Springs, acknowledged in an interview Thursday that he removed a loaded .380 handgun from his ankle during a meeting of the House Education Committee two days earlier, placed it in his desk and left the room without retrieving it. “Was it loaded? Yes,” Dove told reporters. A secretary found the weapon and turned it over to Capitol police immediately, Dove said. About 10 minutes after the meeting, a Capitol worker approached him and asked if he had forgotten something. Dove realized that he had left his weapon and was informed by Capitol police that it had been placed in lock-up. He got it back the following morning. “That’s the end of it,” Dove said when asked whether Capitol police would take further action. A member of the Capitol police would not comment Thursday, referring all questions to Tom Day, the director of Legislative Administrative Services. “Capitol Police had a conversation with him. That’s it as far as I know,” Day said. “It means I’m going to get me a shoulder holster,” Dove said when asked if he would change his behavior going forward. He said he had removed the weapon from his ankle because the ankle had begun to swell. “I unclamped it from my right leg and pushed it back and when I got up I just forgot it,” Dove said. The Legislature began allowing concealed firearms in the Capitol in 2014. Dove said he regularly carries a concealed weapon and that this was the first time something like this has happened. Under the same law that opened the Capitol to firearms, Kansas universities will have to open their campuses to firearms in July. The disclosure that Dove left his weapon in a committee room occurred the same day as a hearing on (LINK REMOVED) from that policy. Supporters of exempting colleges say that allowing firearms on campus will create an unsafe environment. “God, I’m glad I’m not on that panel,” Dove said. Kansas stopped requiring a license to conceal and carry in 2015. Dove said he obtained a license before that law went into effect. He said he had no comment on whether this had created an unsafe environment in the Capitol. “It was unfortunate. I usually carry it. My ankle was swelling and I unstrapped myself, which I hardly ever do, and that was it,” Dove said.

(LINK REMOVED), 1/25/17: A man was arrested Wednesday after a woman was accidentally shot in the leg. Police were called to the 300 block of Phelps Avenue Wednesday afternoon and found a female that had been shot in the leg. The woman told officers that she and a male acquaintance were playing around when the gun discharged. The gun was located at the home and found to have been reported stolen out of Grand Rapids. The man was arrested for felon in possession of a firearm and possession of a stolen firearm.

(LINK REMOVED), 1/25/17: An Ohio State Highway Patrol trooper is recovering after an accidental shooting on Wednesday night. The trooper was identified as Sergeant Wesley Stough. An OSHP spokesperson said the incident happened inside the Heath Police Department. Strough put the gun into his holster when it discharged. The gunshot hit him in the leg. He was rushed to a local hospital. OSHP told ABC 6/FOX 28 that the trooper's injuries were not life-threatening. "Sergeant Wesley Stought is recovering and is expected to make a full recovery," said OSHP Lieutenant Robert G. Sellers.

(LINK REMOVED), 1/25/17: Shortly after 10 PM, Ryan Keith Hollis, 21, was shot at the Crossings at McDonough apartments, according to a police report. Police have not said whether the shootings are connected. Witnesses told McDonough police officers that Hollis was showing his gun to other passengers in a car when it accidentally went off. Hollis suffered non-life-threatening injuries.

(LINK REMOVED), 1/25/17: A sheriff’s deputy late Wednesday reportedly accidentally shot his gun into a neighboring home occupied at the time by two residents at an east side apartment complex, Athens-Clarke County police said. No one was injured by the gunshot, which resulted in a bullet passing through a bedroom wall and a TV before lodging in a wall separating the bedroom and living room, according to police. The 24-year-old deputy was an employee of the Hall County Sheriff’s Office and lived at the Cedar Shoals Drive complex with his girlfriend, who was identified as a rookie Athens-Clarke County police officer who was attending the police training academy. The rookie cop told police she was outside walking her dog when she heard the gunshot, and upon returning home found her boyfriend “crouched on the floor, obviously upset,” according to a police incident report. When she asked what happened, the deputy said he had a “negligent discharge” of his duty weapon. The deputy explained the incident occurred as he was putting out his equipment in preparation for going to work in the morning. When placing the gun on a counter. The weapon discharged “either because of the jarring of the gun being put down or because of where he had his hand” on the gun, according to police. The deputy and Athens cop said they went to the neighboring apartment to see if anyone had been injured, but the deputy told police that no one came to the door when he knocked. The apartment’s two residents, who were sisters, told police they were afraid to answer the door because the deputy identified himself only as “a friendly neighbor.” After the deputy and his girlfriend left, the sisters went to a business near their apartment complex to meet with an Athens-Clarke County police officer to tell what happened. The Hall County Sheriff’s Office was notified about what had occurred, and the agency indicated someone would be sent to Athens to take custody of the deputy’s gun “for its own purposes,” according to police. The deputy has been disciplined for the gun incident, according to Hall County Sheriff’s Office spokesman Lt. Scott Ware. When asked what the discipline involved, Ware responded, “You can file an Open Records (Act) request for further info if you like.”

(LINK REMOVED), 1/26/17: A man accidentally shot himself in the hand while cleaning his gun at a Greenwood home early Thursday. Police were called to an apartment in the 900 block of Kings Mill Road in Polo Run Apartments just before 1 AM where a man had accidentally shot himself in the hand, according to the Greenwood police report. The man told officers he had accidentally shot himself while cleaning his gun, the report said. The officer treated the man’s wound and then emergency workers took over treatment, the report said.

(LINK REMOVED), 1/26/17: An Isle of Wight deputy accidentally fired his weapon following a police chase on Thursday. The Isle of Wight Sheriff’s Office said Friday that the deputy was responding to a chase that had begun in Chesapeake, and crossed through multiple cities before ending in Isle of Wight. The sheriff’s office said the deputy “experienced an accidental discharge of his service weapon” as the suspect of the chase, Omar Kishaan Epps, was being taken in to custody. A bullet hit the front bumper of the car Epps was driving, the sheriff’s office said. The deputy has been placed on administrative duties pending the outcome of an investigation into the incident.

(LINK REMOVED), 1/26/17: A teen charged in a deadly shooting in Sumter County while he was out on bond for a separate attempted murder case will remain in jail. A Sumter County magistrate did not set bond for Rhythm Sharmell Portee, 17, at his hearing. Portee is charged with manslaughter in the shooting death of 19-year-old Kyre Raquan Bethea Thursday night. Investigators say Bethea was shot in the chest as he and Portee played a game with a gun. Because of the nature of the charge, Portee will be held in the Sumter-Lee Regional Detention Center until he can appear before a circuit court judge, which the Sumter County Sheriff's Office says will be in March. At the time of the shooting, Portee had been out on bond for an attempted murder charge stemming from an incident in December. He is facing charges in adult court in both cases.

(LINK REMOVED), 1/26/17: A man accidentally shot himself Thursday night at the UPS Customer Center in the 3600 block of Swinnea Road. Memphis police said the man shot himself in the hand while standing in the parking lot. The man left the scene before police arrived.

(LINK REMOVED), 1/26/17: A Twin Falls man has been arrested and charged with involuntary manslaughter in the Thursday-afternoon shooting of a woman at the State Apartments on Second Avenue North. Brandon S. Smithson, 26, is charged in the death of roommate Katrina D. Budden, 20, of Twin Falls. Police officers were dispatched to 232 Second Ave. N. for a reported shooting and found Budden inside the apartment building with a gunshot wound to her head. Budden was taken to St. Luke’s Magic Valley Medical Center, where she died from her injuries. The Twin Falls County coroner scheduled an autopsy for Monday. Police say two neighbors were in Budden and Smithson’s apartment when the shooting happened. The group was sitting and talking when Smithson offered to show them his other roommate’s guns. The first was an AR-15 rifle; the second was a Remington shotgun. “…when Smithson came back into the living room, he racked the shotgun and suddenly shot Budden as she was sitting in the chair,” an officer wrote in court records. One of the neighbors told police Smithson dropped the shotgun on the floor and began screaming that it was an accident. Smithson told police he was holding the gun at his waist when he racked open the shotgun and checked to make sure the gun was empty, then closed the action and pulled the trigger. The gun went off, and a round struck Budden in the head. “Smithson said he dropped the shotgun on the floor, called 911 and tried administering first aid to Budden,” court records say. “Smithson said he had done the same sequence in the past, and after racking the gun, he would pull the trigger and hear the metal click.” He told police he was sure the gun was empty. The roommate who owns the shotgun told police he had recently been out shooting and left the gun loaded with shells in the tube, but no shell in the chamber. Police said evidence in the house was consistent with Smithson’s and the neighbors’ versions of events. Smithson is being held at the Twin Falls County Jail in lieu of $75,000 bond. A preliminary hearing is set for Jan. 27.

(LINK REMOVED), 1/26/17: A man accidentally shot himself in the arm as he slipped and fell on the ice near Newman Lake early Thursday morning. Deputies were called to the 10500 block of North McCoy Road around 12:40 AM by a resident who said a man had been shot. Deputies who responded found a 25-year-old wounded man who was vague about what had happened but said someone else was involved, said Deputy Mark Gregory. As investigators pressed for further details about a suspect, the man confessed that no one else was there, Gregory said. He told deputies that he had crashed his car and was walking to a friend’s house when he slipped and fell and hit his head. At some point during his fall his .45 caliber gun went off and he was wounded in the arm. A loaded handgun was recovered at the scene. The man was taken to a local hospital for treatment. He has not been charged with a crime but the investigation is ongoing, Gregory said.

(LINK REMOVED), 1/26/17: A 20-year-old man is dead after he was accidentally shot by a friend in the Garden Home community of Southwest Portland, the Washington County Sheriff's Office says. Deputies were called to the Frank Estate Apartments just before 11 PM Thursday on the report of an accidental shooting. When they arrived, they found a young man who had been shot in the abdomen by his 28-year-old friend. He was quickly taken to OHSU, but was pronounced dead on arrival. Detectives say the victim and several of his friends were celebrating the Chinese New Year together when the owner of the apartment decided to show one of his guns to the group. He brought out a .223 caliber AR-15, unloaded the weapon and passed it around the group, according to detectives. He then took the gun back and was in the process of reloading it when the weapon discharged and struck the victim. Detectives say 911 was immediately called and the 28-year-old tried to save his friend. The victim's parents live in another country and detectives are still trying to contact them. Detectives say the shooter has not been charged with any crimes and that alcohol or drugs were not a factor. The case is still under investigation. The Sheriff's Office strongly urges people to handle guns in a safe manner and to always treat all firearms as if they are loaded at all times.

(LINK REMOVED), 1/27/17: A 12-year-old boy was hospitalized after he was shot by a relative at his home in North Salem, officials said. Salem police Lt. Dave Okada said an accidental shooting was reported at the residence on the 1700 block of Fairgrounds Road NE shortly after 1:30 PM. The boy was taken to Salem Health hospital with non-life-threatening injuries. Okada said could not confirm whether the shooting was accidental or intentional, but he said an investigation was underway. No arrests have been made.

(LINK REMOVED), 1/27/17: A teenage boy was accidentally shot in the arm while he and his friends were playing with a gun Friday afternoon, according to the Snohomish County Sheriff's Department. The shooting happened about 4:30 PM in a wooded area behind the Mill Creek Town Center. Deputies said four teenage boys were in the woods playing with the gun when it accidentally discharged, hitting one of the boys in the arm. The boy who was shot was taken to the hospital with non-life threatening injuries. The teen who handling the gun when it went off, dropped the weapon and ran into the woods. Officers are now searching the area to locate the teen. The Sheriff's Office is calling the shooting accidental. They're still investigating who owns the gone and how the teen got it.

(LINK REMOVED), 1/27/17: Police and medics have responded to a reported accidental shooting on Chambersburg Road in Huber Heights Friday morning. The incident was reported in the 6800 block of Chambersburg Road around 4:40 AM. Initial reports indicate a man was cleaning a gun when it discharged, and shot him in the hand.

(LINK REMOVED), 1/27/17: A man has been arrested after accidentally shooting a 21-year-old woman, according to police. Shortly before 8 PM Friday, dispatch received a call regarding a shooting that happened in the 100 block of Turret Lane. The victim, a 21-year-old woman, was taken to the hospital in a personal vehicle with what appeared to be multiple gun shot wounds. She is expected to be okay. Police say the suspect, Terry De’Shawn Davis, fell asleep with a firearm in his hands which he accidentally fired once, hitting the victim. The path of the projectile made it seem that the victim was hit by multiple bullets, but she was only struck by one bullet. Davis, 24, was arrested in connection to the incident. He was charged with one count of reckless handling of a firearm.

(LINK REMOVED), 1/27/17: A woman shooting herself in the leg at an Athens residence Friday led police to what they believe to be the beginnings of an indoor marijuana farm. Police initially went to the home at 390 Glenwood Drive in response to a woman’s 911 call that she accidentally shot herself in the leg with a gun. The 51-year-old woman said she armed herself because she was being stalked by a man who, just prior to police arriving, was in a closet. She said she fired the gun twice, once accidentally into her leg and the other time into the closet where she indicated the “stalker” was hiding, according to police. Police said the only other person in the home at the time was its 55-year-old resident, Mark Charles King, but he was not believed to be the person the woman shot at, according to police spokesman Epifanio Rodriguez. “The only thing I can answer is Mark King was not her intended target and that she was firing at an ‘unknown’ man that was in the house,” Rodriguez said. Police said they found two cartridge casings on the floor. Knowing one of the bullets was in the woman’s leg, they searched where the other projectile ended up, beginning in the closet where the woman said her “stalker” was. Police said they examined the closet’s walls for any bullet holes, looked on the floor and were moving around some clothing when they came across a large bag of marijuana. The Northeast Georgia Regional Drug Task Force was notified and drug agents responded to the home with a search warrant. The evidence they found led police to conclude the large bag of pot in the closet was “old marijuana” that was previously cultivated and harvested. According to Rodriguez, investigators believed that equipment seized suggested King had plans to turn the Glenwood Drive residence into a new location for a marijuana “grow house.” Police also seized several types of prescription pills and two guns. Arrest warrants for King were subsequently obtained and he was booked into the Clarke County Jail Monday evening on charges of manufacturing marijuana, possession with intent to distribute marijuana, five counts of possession of a controlled substance and two counts of possession of a firearm during the commission of a felony. The woman who shot herself was a resident of Statham, police said. She was not charged.

(LINK REMOVED), 1/27/17: Peabody Police confiscated a gun Friday after it went off sometime before 4 PM in the 500 block of N. Elm St. Radio transmissions recorded by the newspaper indicated police arrived at 3:55 PM and that at least two parties in the house had been separated. The location of the gun was unclear. However, no injuries, other than a “thumb pain,” were reported, and transportation was refused. Peabody Police Chief Bruce Burke said it was unclear what circumstances had caused the gun to go off. He said the incident was believed to have involved an accidental discharge. “The weapon was confiscated,” Burke said. “The owner can retrieve the weapon after I talk to them and the county attorney talks to them,” Burke said. “But it will be up to the county attorney when the weapon can be returned.”

(LINK REMOVED), 1/27/17: A Smith & Wesson 9-mm pistol was found lying in the men’s bathroom at Vivere Italian Restaurant, 1000 E. Rawson Ave., at 11:10 AM Jan. 28. The gun was apparently left behind by a patron the night before. Police confiscated the gun.

(LINK REMOVED), 1/28/17: Police responded to a home in the 9200 block of South Eighth Avenue after a man called 911 to report he accidentally fired a bullet through his roof while he was cleaning his gun at 12:15 AM Jan. 28. The caller told police he had finished cleaning the firearm and believed it was unloaded when one of his friends grabbed it off the table and pulled the hammer back. When the caller tried to safely release the hammer, he accidentally fired the gun and the bullet went through the ceiling. Police took the man into custody after he admitted he had been drinking, and a breath test indicated he had a 0.134 preliminary blood alcohol content. He is facing a charges of endangering safety by use of a dangerous weapon and being armed with a firearm while intoxicated.

(LINK REMOVED), 1/28/17: An Anderson County man remains in critical but stable condition tonight following what police are calling an accidental shooting Friday night at 1314 Alton Station Road. Zach Cotton, 24, an animal control officer with Anderson County government, was with friends when another person’s gun discharged and struck him in the head. Sheriff Joe Milam said today that his office is investigating the incident. “This appears to be an accidental shooting,” Milam said earlier this afternoon. “There doesn’t appear to be any foul play.” Milam said another person at the location was apparently cleaning a 9 mm Smith & Wesson handgun when it discharged, hitting Cotton. Cotton was airlifted to the University of Kentucky Medical Center after being treated by Anderson County EMS. His father, Noel, said he is expected to recover but has a lot of healing to do. “It shattered his jawbone,” Noel Cotton said. “They have him resting and will re-evaluate him in a couple of days to see if he needs surgery.” Noel Cotton said his family has received a tremendous number of calls from those concerned about his son. “It’s amazing,” he said. “A lot of people have called and stop by to pray. “We’re OK, we just ask that people keep Zach in their prayers.”

(LINK REMOVED), 1/28/17: A New Jersey man was shot and killed in a hunting accident on Saturday, authorities said. The 26-year-old Barnegat man was gunned down by a 41-year-old friend in a wooded area in Berkeley Township, according to the Ocean County Prosecutor’s Office. Police found the victim’s body after a 911 call around 8:45 AM, officials said. The unidentified victim was out hunting with his father and two friends, when the shotgun accident occurred, prosecutors said. According to authorities, the victim’s father heard the shot, and rushed to his son’s side to help, but it was too late. No one has been charged in the man’s death.

(LINK REMOVED), 1/28/17: A Cambridge man was admitted to Albany Medical Center after an apparent accidental shooting late Saturday, police said. Jacob Worthington suffered a serious leg injury when a 9mm handgun he was handling apparently went off around 7:30 PM, according to Cambridge-Greenwich Police. The injury required surgery, but is not believed to be life-threatening, and his condition was not available Sunday morning at the hospital. Cambridge-Greenwich Police Chief George Bell said the round passed through one of Worthington's thighs as he removed the gun from a drawer and it somehow discharged. "He told us his finger got stuck in the rail and it went off," Bell said. The rail sits on top of the handgun. Worthington has a permit for the 9mm semiautomatic handgun, and has numerous other guns, police said. The investigation was ongoing as of Sunday but no charges had been filed. Cambridge-Greenwich officers Cameron Missenis and Cory Winch are investigating.

(LINK REMOVED), 1/28/17: Four young men were smoking marijuana, drinking liquor and rapping on Instagram live video Saturday evening in the back bedroom of a Talcott Avenue house when Joey Maddox, 19, asked to see Pierce Montie's gun. Montie, 15, pulled the black Kel-Tec .380-caliber semiautomatic pistol from his waistband and handed it to Maddox, according to a police report released Monday that provides the first details of the shooting. Maddox racked the handgun and would later tell police he thought he was aiming an unloaded gun a little above Montie's head when he pulled the trigger. "I wanted to hear the click," Maddox said. Instead a projectile exploded out of the barrel and struck Montie in the left forehead. Montie collapsed to the floor. The Rockville High School student was in critical condition at Connecticut Children's Medical Center Monday. Maddox and the two others, who a moment earlier were with Montie "chillin', rappin' and smokin'" ran from Montie's bedroom and out of his family's house. One of them took the gun with him. A 911 call from one of Montie's parents brought Vernon police and EMS. As medics worked to save Montie, police searched for suspects and moments later an officer took Maddox into custody. Maddox initially blamed two others for shooting Montie, but gave police a full confession later, after talking with his lawyer, John F. O'Brien of Rockville. Maddox told police he knew Montie had had the gun for about two weeks, according to the report. Police said the gun's serial number had been obliterated. One of the others in the room at the time of the shooting who took the gun returned to the scene and turned it over to police. He also told police what he saw, according to the report. At Maddox's arraignment Monday in Superior Court in Rockville, Tolland State's Attorney Matthew C. Gedansky acknowledged that the shooting appeared to have been unintentional, but refused to call it an accident. The outcome should not have been a surprise, Gedansky said, when illegal substances, guns and people not licensed to possess firearms were mixed. With friends and family of Maddox and Montie looking on, Rockville Superior Court Judge Carl A. Taylor set Maddox's bail at $99,000 cash. O'Brien said it was unlikely Maddox would be able to afford bail. O'Brien called the shooting an accident and said Maddox is distraught. "He did not know it was loaded, hence the accidental discharge," O'Brien said. He described Maddox and Montie as close friends, and said Maddox and his family are praying for Montie's recovery. Outside the courthouse, Maddox's family and friends gathered in a circle to pray. Kevin Hutton, Montie's uncle, described his nephew as a good baseball player and a good kid. He said the family is hopeful Montie will recover and is praying for him. When asked about the gun, O'Brien said he hopes Vernon police find whoever is selling guns to 15-year-olds. The charges against Maddox include first-degree assault, first-degree reckless endangerment, criminal possession of a firearm, risk of injury to a minor, possession of a weapon with an altered identification, unlawful discharge of a firearm and possession of marijuana. Maddox has criminal cases pending in Superior Court in Manchester and Rockville for sale of drugs, possession of marijuana, escape from custody and interfering with police.

(LINK REMOVED), 1/28/17: A man cleaning his gun at a Nashua residence accidentally shot himself and another man Saturday morning, according to police. The men were hospitalized and expected to survive. Police said at about 11:45 AM, they were called to a local hospital after the men arrived with gunshot wounds to their lower extremities. "One subject reported that he was cleaning his firearm and it discharged, striking both himself and the male seated next to him," Nashua police Sgt. Andrew Karlis said in a statement. "Both subjects are reported to be in stable condition." Karlis said an investigation into the incident is ongoing.

(LINK REMOVED), 1/28/17: According to Vestavia Hills police, officers responded shortly after 8 PM last night on a person suffering from a gunshot wound at Brookwood Green condos. Lt. Gilham said the man was transported to the hospital with a non-life threatening wound to the abdomen. As of Sunday morning, he is listed in stable condition. Gilham said investigators have ruled the shooting accidental, but that the case remains under investigation.

(LINK REMOVED), 1/28/17: Two men are being treated at St. Rose Hospital this afternoon after what appears to be accidental shootings. The shootings occurred about 1:15 PM near Interstate 15 at mile marker 41 on the east side of the freeway not far from the Gold Strike Casino, said Metro Lt. Grant Rogers. Both injuries are believed to be nonlife-threatening. One man was shot in his leg and the other in his rib area. "It is really a safe environment out there with lots of people pulling over and target shooting by the side of the road. There are shell casings all over the place" Rogers said. "We are treating it an an accidental shooting for now, but if we get new information we will change it. Right now we have almost no information about it.

GunFAIL doesn’t stop. I just sometimes fail to report it promptly. This time, we’re catching up on the week of January 29th through February 4th, during which 16 minors were accidentally shot, 15 people accidentally shot themselves, nine people accidentally shot family members or significant others, three people dropped guns and accidentally fired them, two law enforcement officers accidentally discharged their weapons, two people accidentally fired guns they were cleaning while they were still loaded, two others accidentally fired their guns while they were out shopping or otherwise roaming about town, and one patriotic American selflessly shared his discharged ammunition with a neighbor.

Top stories this week? The police officer who accidentally discharged his weapon in DC’s Reagan National Airport. The Tennessee woman who took her gun with her to investigate strange noises outside her home, slipped on some ice, and accidentally shot herself in the leg. The Mississippi 4-year-old who found a parent’s gun (in an unlocked safe) and shot his 14-month-old sibling. And the old stand-by: the Alaska man who tried to balance his gun on top of the toilet paper dispenser in a supermarket restroom, and was accidentally shot in the leg when it fell off and discharged.

(LINK REMOVED), 1/29/17: An Evansville man is in jail after police say he shot someone in his home. According to police, 20-year-old Kendall Lacy accidentally shot a man late Sunday night in the 700 block of South Kentucky Avenue. The victim was taken to the hospital. At last check, he's still there, but a police sergeant tells us he was awake and talking as he was taken out of the home. Lacy is charged with criminal recklessness while armed with a deadly weapon. Police also found drugs in the home, and he's facing charges of dealing marijuana.

(LINK REMOVED), 1/29/17: A 19-year-old man has been arrested in connection with a Sunday afternoon shooting in Springfield that injured one person. Springfield police say officers were dispatched to HSHS St. John's Hospital at about 12:21 PM for a report of a person with apparent gunshot wounds that just arrived by a personally-owned vehicle. Upon arriving, officers learned that a 17-year-old girl had sustained a gunshot wound to the hand and inner thigh. During the initial investigation, Springfield police were told that the shooting happened in the area of Third and Scarritt Streets. However, officers say further investigation into the shooting led police to believe that the shooting was accidental, and happened in the 200 block of East Canedy Street. Springfield police interviewed the victim's boyfriend, identified as Devin Leavell, 19, who allegedly confessed to his involvement in the accidental shooting. Leavell was arrested, and is facing preliminary charges of reckless discharge of a firearm and unlawful possession of a firearm by a felon. The investigation into the shooting is ongoing. We will provide more information as it becomes available.

(LINK REMOVED), 1/29/17: A Hamden man was charged after police say he accidentally fired his gun while unloading it, sending a bullet through the apartment below him. Police say they were called to an apartment complex on Mix Avenue in Hamden on January 29 because a resident noticed a bullet hole in the ceiling of her bedroom, and found a bullet near her bed. Police say they found out 25-year-old Brian Rago lives above that woman, and discharged his gun while unloading it. Police say the bullet damaged a table before going through the ceiling. Rago is charged with 2nd degree Reckless Endangerment and Unlawful Discharge of a Firearm. He’s set to appear in court in Meriden on February 9.

(LINK REMOVED), 1/30/17: An airport police officer at Reagan National Airport accidentally discharged a firearm Monday, authorities said. At around 3:30 PM, Airports Authority Police responded to the exit lane of a security checkpoint for Terminal B and C after the officer accidentally discharged the weapon, an airport spokesman said in a statement. One round from the weapon hit a nearby piece of law enforcement equipment, the statement said, and airport police determined there was no threat and secured the scene. There were no injuries, according to the statement, and screening was halted for about five minutes at the checkpoint. The incident remains under investigation.

(LINK REMOVED), 1/30/17: A teen in Arkansas accidentally shot and killed himself earlier this week while putting a gun into his waistband. Family members, heartbroken, told (LINK REMOVED) they are praying for answers as they try to grasp what happened. They say Kevin Branch, 16, was involved in an altercation at a basketball court the day he died. "Evidently the young man made an idle threat," Angela Jones, the victim's cousin, said. "Kevin feared for his life." They are still unsure how Branch obtained a gun. "He went to put the gun into his waistband and we suspect that's when it went off," Chief Todd Grooms of the Crittenden County Sheriff's Department, said. Officials said evidence and witnesses, showed the teen had accidentally shot himself in the abdomen. "We don't suspect foul play in any way," Grooms explained. The family says Branch was a junior in high school, and an honors student. "Now he won't be able to enjoy the pleasure of most young men as far as walking across the stage and an honor graduate because his life ended last night," Jones said. Branch is remembered as a young man who was happy, loved fashion, and worked hard.

(LINK REMOVED), 1/30/17: Suspicious noises and an icy step resulted in an accidental gunshot wound early yesterday morning in Dandridge, Sheriff Bud McCoig reported. Amanda C. Williams, 33, of Indian Creek Road, was treated and released at Jefferson Memorial Hospital for a gunshot wound to her left leg. She and her husband had heard suspicious noises outside at about midnight, and she picked up a .22 pistol as they went to investigate. According to Sgt. David Taliaferro’s report, Mrs. Williams accidentally discharged the semiautomatic as she slipped on an icy step. The bullet entered her left thigh and exited the lower portion of her knee, the officer said. Her husband, Rodney Williams, 41, heard the accident and ran to assist her. He drove her to the Jefferson Memorial Hospital Emergency Room, where deputies were called at 1:50 AM. Taliaferro said the emergency room physician indicated that the wound was consistent with Mrs. Williams’ explanation of the accident. She reported that they heard a car and voices outside, and her husband asked her where the pistol was. He was also outside trying to spot the vehicle, which apparently left the scene, when the accident occurred. Mrs. Williams reported that the gun had jammed just before the accident. She had removed the magazine and reinserted it before removing the lodged round. She had the gun in her right hand when she slipped on the step, she reported. Snow showers were moving through the area at the time, and temperatures had dropped below freezing.

(LINK REMOVED), 1/30/17: An Allentown man accidentally shot himself in the leg as he was cleaning his handgun Monday afternoon and had to be taken to a hospital, police said. The 24-year-old man, who lives in the 500 block of Park Street, had just come home from a shooting range at 4 PM when he fired a round into his leg while he took the gun apart, police Capt. Dan Wiedemann said. The wound appeared minor, Wiedemann said, but he was taken to Lehigh Valley Hospital-Cedar Crest for treatment. The gun owner will not be charged because the shooting was an accident, police said.

(LINK REMOVED), 1/31/17: Cleaning a handgun Tuesday night in Palmer Township led to an accidental, self-inflicted gunshot wound, according to township police. It occurred about 7:30 PM at a home in the 2600 block of Eldridge Avenue, a Northampton County 911 dispatch supervisor confirmed. Initial reports were for an adult male who had suffered a gunshot wound. Township police Sgt. Timothy Ruoff said the surface wound to the hand was minor and that the victim was taken to an area hospital for treatment. No one else was reported injured. Police did not have further information immediately available.

(LINK REMOVED), 1/31/17: Omaha Police say the victim of a Tuesday night shooting has died. He is identified as Benjamin Majestic, 44. Investigators say the shooting appears to have been accidental. Officers were called to an apartment near 141st and Manderson Plaza to investigate the shooting at 6:47 PM. They located Majestic who had suffered a gunshot wound. Omaha police have confirmed that he was accidentally shot by his 27-year-old son. Majestic was transported to the hospital and died as a result of his injuries. Police list Majestic's date of birth as January 31, 1973. He was shot on his birthday. Homicide Detectives have taken over this investigation.

(LINK REMOVED), 1/31/17: A 14-month-old was injured in an accidental shooting Tuesday night in Rankin County. Sheriff Bryan Bailey said deputies went to the scene after a 4-year-old in the home got hold to a gun that was in a safe. We’re told the safe was not locked. The 4-year-old accidentally shot the sibling. Sheriff Bailey said the children’s father was in the other room watching TV and noticed that the kids had gotten quiet. As he was getting up to check on them, a gunshot went off. The 14-month-old was hit in the arm and upper chest area. Authorities said no vital organs were hit. The father told deputies he thought the safe was locked. The child is in stable condition. No charges have been filed.

(LINK REMOVED), 1/31/17: A Sandy man claims he accidentally shot his wife in the shoulder on Tuesday night. 56-year-old Duane Frey was arrested after shooting his wife in the shoulder with a .380 caliber pistol during an argument. His wife called 911 and was taken to a hospital. Her condition is unknown. Frey is charged with assault II, unlawful use of a weapon, menacing, recklessly endangering and pointing a firearm at another.

(LINK REMOVED), 1/31/17: A man who was reportedly shot on Jan. 31 in Santa Maria is a convicted gang member who shot and wounded himself, said Detective Paul Flores with the city’s police department. Initially, the department received a report of an 18-year-old man who checked himself into Marian Regional Medical Center after getting shot in the calf in the area of Cook and Western streets, according to Santa Maria Police Department Lt. Marc Schneider. It wasn’t clear at first if the man shot himself, since he was sitting in a car at the time, Schneider said, although initially there was “no evidence that it was self-inflicted.” After reviewing evidence, detectives determined that Bobby Romero-Torrez, 18, of Santa Maria, shot himself. Police identified Guy Parris, 20, of Santa Maria as a witness to the shooting. The same night he was shot, Romero-Torrez was booked into jail for violating the terms of his parole. (LINK REMOVED), 1/31/17: The 14-year-old Jersey City boy who was found with a gunshot wound Tuesday afternoon near his grammar school shot himself, police said this morning. The School 15 student has been charged with unlawful possession of a handgun, possession of a weapon for unlawful purposes and possession of a firearm by a minor, city spokeswoman Jennifer Morrill said. Initially it was reported that the boy was shot in the calf sometime around 3:30 PM, near the corner of Wegman Parkway and Van Cleef Street. He went back to the school, about a block away, and police were called. But police began doubting the boy's initial statements after they viewed surveillance video, Morrill said yesterday. It was not immediately known if the boy had the gun inside the school during the school day. The 14-year-old was treated and released from the Jersey City Medical Center-RWJBarnabas and then remanded to a juvenile detention center in Union County.

The victim said as he unlocked the driver’s side door of his vehicle, the gun fell and he “believes that it struck the running board of his vehicle,” afterwards discharging and striking his right arm. (LINK REMOVED), 2/01/17: A man injured Wednesday afternoon when his gun accidentally discharged was in the process of trying to secure it, according to Soldotna police. Officer Tobin Brennan responded to the bathroom in Fred Meyer in Soldotna at 12:35 PM for a man who had been wounded by a gunshot from his firearm. “He was trying to set it down and secure it on the toilet paper (dispenser) … and it fell off of there,” Brennan said. The man was shot in the calf, he said, and is alert and awake, being taken care of at the hospital. Brennan responded to the scene along with another Soldotna police officer and four Alaska State Troopers. The scene was secured in a matter of minutes, he said, with no major disruption to the store.

(LINK REMOVED), 2/01/17: A Bittersweet Lake Lane man was taken to a hospital Feb. 1 after he told police he accidentally shot himself in the face while attempting to unload a gun. Frank Conly told Brown County Sheriff’s Chief Deputy Brad Stogsdill he dropped his gun while he was unloading it. He grabbed the gun, causing it to go off, according to a report by Detective Paul Henderson. A woman was home when Stogsdill and Henderson arrived, but she told police she was not there when the incident occurred. Henderson reported the man was lying on a bed, conscious and alert with an exit wound on the right side of his jaw below the ear. Conly denied intentionally shooting himself. He was taken to a hospital by ambulance.

(LINK REMOVED), 2/01/17: A 2-year-old boy who was fatally shot Wednesday was killed by a single bullet from a gun his brother was playing with, police said. At about noon, Carlsbad police were called to the scene in the 900 block of Lamont Street were four brothers between ages 2 and 5 were playing with a loaded handgun when it accidentally fired, said Sgt. Scott Naylor. Naylor said the deceased child was rushed to a local hospital where he was pronounced dead. None of the other children were injured in the incident. The boys were at home with their mother and visitors at the time of the shooting, Naylor said. Naylor said the investigation is ongoing and there is the possibility that charges will be brought against the parents for child neglect or abuse. The four surviving children were placed in state custody during the investigation, he said. “It’s a tough situation all around,” Naylor said. “The children found a firearm in the residence. They played with it and it went off with a horrible result. It was put up, but you’ve got four little boys running around.” Naylor said officers are still interviewing witnesses, speaking with the parents and the other four children as part of the investigation. “They were scared beyond belief,” Naylor said of the boys. “It’s hard to read the children because they’re so young.” Fatal shootings involving children are rare in Carlsbad, Naylor said. He said the mother of the child was “very distraught” at the scene. “This is something you here very rarely,” he said. “The sad thing is that this could have been a 35-year-old getting shot and it wouldn’t have nearly the attention. It’s tragic but we have to look into the potential of neglect, and the environment to make sure this doesn’t happen again.” Counseling was made available for the family and officers, many of whom have children themselves, Naylor said.

According to KFDX, Clay County Sheriff Kenny Lemons stated that one of his deputies, who was off duty at the time, was getting into his personal vehicle. The unidentified deputy placed some belongings on top of his weapon and the gun went off, wounding the officer in his buttocks. At last report the deputy was being treated at United Regional.

(LINK REMOVED), 2/01/17: A man told police someone shot him in the right hand, Wednesday morning. The incident began when police received a call about an injured man at a parking lot on Kostoryz. Police say, when they arrived, a man told police someone shot him near the intersection of Prescott and Gollihar. The man was taken to the hospital with non-life threatening injuries. A short time later, a witness told police the man shot himself in the hand by accident. The investigation is ongoing and the victim may face charges for filing a false police report.

(LINK REMOVED), 2/02/17: Houston police responded to reports of shots fired at the Galleria on Thursday night. Witnesses said a man was carrying a gun in a backpack when it fell to the ground and the gun discharged. Police said the man did have a permit to carry, but his weapon was improperly secured. No one was hurt in the incident. The man was detained and questioned before police released him. The district attorney did not accept charges. Police said the man will most likely lose his license to carry and could lose shopping privileges at The Galleria. Police escorted the man out and he was told not to come back because he was in violation of their rules.

(LINK REMOVED), 2/02/17: According to Lieutenant Sean Edwards, the Birmingham Police Department is investigating an accidental shooting of a child. The child’s great uncle was taking the victim and another sibling to their school and daycare Thursday morning. He left the 8-year-old in the car during drop-off, but discovered the little boy had a gun shot wound to his upper body when he came back. The child was taken to UAB Hospital and then transferred to Children’s Hospital. Chief Roper was among the people who have come to Children’s to see about the child’s condition. We are told he is currently in surgery and his injury is life-threatening. The uncle is cooperating with investigators to see exactly how this happened. There have not been any charges filed at this time, but that is still a possibility. In the meantime, Birmingham Police tell us they are praying for the victim to pull through. They are describing this as a terrible accident, but also want to acknowledge that adults have to be responsible with their firearms to prevent tragedies like this from happening.

(LINK REMOVED), 2/02/17: A 9-year-old boy succumbed to injuries he received in an accidental shooting at a residence south of Peck at about 4:55 PM this afternoon. According to the Nez Perce County Sheriff's Office, three male juveniles were in a bedroom playing when they located a handgun. "One of the juveniles attempted to move the gun to a safe location and the gun accidentally went off, with the bullet striking one of the juveniles," Deputy Lucas Martin says in the press release. "Clearwater County Ambulance responded and took the victim to Clearwater Valley Hospital, where he later passed away." The Clearwater County Sheriff's Office and the Idaho State Police assisted at the scene.

(LINK REMOVED), 2/02/17: A 3-year-old boy was killed in an accidental shooting that took place Thursday in the Limestone at Arrowhead community, according to Horry County Coroner Robert Edge. On Friday, Horry County Deputy Coroner Darris Fowler identified the child as Brooks Steen of the Myrtle Beach area. The death is under investigation by Horry County police and appears accidental. Edge said the child got a hold of a weapon, which led to the shooting. Steen was inside the home he shared with his mother and grandfather when he found a gun and accidentally shot himself. Neighbors said his family is left grief stricken. It is currently unclear how the 3-year-old was able to retrieve the gun and then fire it. According to neighbors, the little boy's mother picked him up and ran to the house across the street yelling for help following the gunshot. A neighbor then drove the young boy and his mother to Grand Strand Medical Center’s emergency room. Steen was pronounced dead Thursday afternoon. According to neighbors, Steen was an only child and his grandfather's only grandchild. Many said they do not understand how a tragedy such as this could happen to what they described as an amazing family. Online records for the Horry County Police Department state a death investigation was registered at a location on Afton Court. The incident is listed as happening at 12:15 PM on Thursday. Following the shooting, officials with the HCPD posted information about firearm safety and the "huge responsibilities" that come with owning weapons. "Our prayers are with the family and everyone who has to endure such tragedy, including our own personnel," the Facebook post said in part. "However, we would be remiss to not remind everyone of the huge responsibilities associated with owning firearms." Krystal Dotson, public information officer for the HCPD, did not want to discourage people from owning guns. However, she strongly encourages everyone to practice good safety procedures when it comes to their weapons. "A lot of the gun toys look like real guns, and that's a great opportunity to say that not all guns are toys,” Dotson said. “And you want the child to be aware of the damage. But, obviously, there are children that are not (at) all of age to comprehend that message, and that's why it's crucial and a best, safe practice to keep it locked, keep a gun lock on it, and keep it out of the reach of children.” This is not the first time a child has died in an accidental shooting that happened in either the Grand Strand or the Pee Dee. In 2016, a 12-year-old was killed and a 7-year-old was hurt in the same incident in the Coward area of Florence County. Deputies said in that shooting an 11-year-old got a hold of the gun and accidentally fired it one time, killing 12-year-old Mason Powell. No one was charged in the case. Also in 2016, a 3-year-old boy accidentally shot himself in Lumberton. Officials said he found a gun stored behind the counter of a store his father owned and managed to pull the trigger. According to website GunViolenceArchive.org, this is the first deadly accidental shooting involving a child in South Carolina for 2017. The website states 211 accidental shootings involving children 11 years or age or younger have happened since 2014. Nine of those occurred in South Carolina.

(LINK REMOVED), 2/03/17: A 9-year-old boy accidentally shot his 7-year-old sister Friday evening while the two were alone at their North Charleston home. Police say the gun belonged to their mother, who had left the firearm in the couch. After the shooting, officers say the two children ran down the street to a neighbor's house for help. The mother, Shaneice Dent of Clifton Street, was charged with unlawful conduct toward a child. She also faces drug charges. Saturday morning a judge set bond amounts for Dent's charges - $75,000 for unlawful conduct towards a child $25,000 for manufacturing cocaine base $5,000 for cocaine possession and $5,000 for possession of heroin. Dent's boyfriend, Anthony Samuel, is charged with misprision of a felon because police say his gun was the one found in the couch. His bond amount for the charge is $75,000. The wounded girl was taken to MUSC for treatment. Police did not have an update on the girl's condition late Friday night.

(LINK REMOVED), 2/03/17: A North Charleston teen with a gunshot wound to the groin shot himself Friday afternoon, police say. Police say the boy, 15, told them he and some other kids were playing with firearms at the time. Police initially had been told someone in a blue Honda yelled at the teen before shots were fired. The incident happened in the 4800 block of Gaynor Avenue, which is near the intersection of Nesbit Avenue and two blocks from Highway 78. A spokesman with the police department says the boy was transported to a local hospital. Officers were dispatched just before 4 PM.

(LINK REMOVED), 2/03/16: An 11-year-old boy died Friday after accidentally shooting himself in the head, according to reports from Dudley officials Friday evening. At 9:15 PM Friday, A Dudley police sergeant said Police Chief Steven J. Wojnar was at the location of the shooting, but no other information could be given because it was still an active scene. Later in the night, Chief Wojnar confirmed the child died from his injury and said state police were leading the investigation. The chief stressed there was no danger to the public. The district attorney's office did not release any information Friday night. (LINK REMOVED), 2/03/17: UPDATE @ 11:25 AM Feb. 4 The 20-year-old woman who on Friday was shot and killed, allegedly by her boyfriend, has been identified. The victim has been identified as 20-year-old Taylor L. McKee, of Union, Ohio, according to the Montgomery County Coroner’s Office. UPDATE @ 10 PM: The 18-year-old who police believe called 9-1-1 to falsely report that his girlfriend was shot as she walked to a gas station in Trotwood, then claimed he shot and killed her accidentally, is being detained in jail pending the filing of a reckless homicide charge. A caller to 9-1-1 who identified himself as Erby told an emergency dispatcher that he carried the woman back to the house on Horrell Road. "She got shot!" the caller tells the dispatcher. "I think she's dead, Bro," he said. "This is scary as hell." The caller tells the dispatcher a bullet hit the woman in her arm and continued through her chest. He tells the dispatcher he and his girlfriend were on their way to get her child from a daycare facility, but her car was out of gas. Erby was booked into the Montgomery County Jail about 8:45 PM. UPDATE @ 8:18 p.m.: An 18-year-old man who claims he accidentally shot and killed a 20-year-old woman believed to be his girlfriend has been taken into custody, Trotwood Police Chief Erik Wilson said. The police department will pursue a charge of reckless homicide against the man, who has been taken to the Montgomery County Jail, the chief said. Police dispatched to the house on Horrell Road about 2:15 PM found the woman in the home, where paramedics worked on her. She was taken to Miami Valley Hospital, where she was pronounced dead. Police, in their investigation, detained two 18-year-old men and interviewed them at the police station. One of them told police the woman was shot outside the residence, while he walked with her to a nearby gas station. Wilson said that story, which was relayed by one of the men in a call to a 9-1-1 dispatcher, turned out not to be true. The chief said investigators have not established whether the man who made the 9-1-1 call is the same man who confessed to accidentally shooting the woman while they were in the house. He told police where they could find the gun Wilson said is a small-caliber handgun. "We believe that is the weapon that was used," the chief said. The male who admitted to the shooting denies that an argument led to the incident, but police are trying to verify his claim. "We have a long way to go before we have a complete picture" of what happened, the chief said. UPDATE @ 8:30 PM: A woman has died in this shooting in Trotwood, the police chief confirms. UPDATE @ 4:24 PM: A female has been shot and police are waiting to hear from medical personnel about her condition, Trotwood Police Chief Erik Wilson said. He said the investigation is fluid and would release no other details. A police officer is going through a car that is parked in front of the house. FIRST REPORT: Trotwood police have responded to the 5000 block of Horrell Road in response to a reported shooting believed to have occurred about 2:19 PM. According to Montgomery County Regional Dispatch, medical personnel are treating one female victim and her status is unknown. We are on our way to the scene and we’re working to learn more.

(LINK REMOVED), 2/03/17: Fresno police arrested a man Friday who had shot himself and was taken to the hospital by a driver who then was found to allegedly possess methamphetamine and was also arrested. Andrew Kousol, 24, who had a gunshot injury to his lower left calf area, arrived at Community Regional Medical Center around 6 PM. He was driven there in a white SUV and was being assisted by his brother, who police did not identify. Kousol and his brother were asked by police how the injury occurred. But the two did not provide many details, leading police to grow suspicious about the shooting. After they were told the shooting had happened somewhere in southeast Fresno and after examining the wound, police officers began to suspect that Kousol shot himself. In the SUV parked outside, a loaded .40-caliber semiautomatic handgun was found covered with blood and in plain sight in the cargo space of the vehicle. The driver and passenger of the SUV were held by police as they investigated the weapon. Arturo Garcia, 21, the vehicle owner, was found with an unknown amount of methamphetamine and heroin packed for sale, police said. The passenger was not identified. After all the discoveries, Kousol’s brother came clean to police, admitting Kousol had actually shot himself in the garage of their on the 4900 block of East Laurel Avenue in southeast Fresno. The family had found a bloodied and injured Kousol after they heard the single gunshot, the brother further told police. Eventually, police arrested Kousol and Garcia. Kousol, a self-admitted Lao Boys street gang member was on probation for evading a police officer. He was arrested Friday on suspicion of possessing a firearm as a convicted felon. Police said Garcia, a street-level drug dealer, was arrested for possession of heroin and methamphetamine for sale. Both suspects were booked into the Fresno County Jail on Friday night.

(LINK REMOVED), 2/03/17: Park Ridge police investigating a report of a shooting along Higgins Road early Friday morning now believe the incident may have been an accident and did not involve an alleged robbery. Updated information provided by police indicates that investigators are "working under the premise" that the 21-year-old's man gunshot wound occurred as a result of an "accidental discharge" of a firearm while he was a passenger inside a car. Police are still investigating how exactly the shooting occurred and who was holding the gun at the time, said Deputy Police Chief Lou Jogmen. The victim earlier told police that he was shot in the neck after a man approached the passenger side of the car while it was stopped at a traffic signal on the 1400 block of westbound Higgins Road—near Mr. K's Garden and Material Center—and demanded money. The victim told police he could not provide a description of the suspect, but investigators now say the story of the robbery was fabricated.

The victim was a 17-year-old boy who was shot in the stomach about 7:30 PM but is expected to survive, police Capt. Steve Vangelo said Saturday. Vangelo said police were unsure of many details of the shooting, including how it transpired and exactly where it occurred. But it appears the teen was shot by accident by someone else with a handgun, Vangelo said. "We are getting a lot of conflicting reports," Vangelo said. An Allentown EMS ambulance took the teen to Lehigh Valley Hospital-Cedar Crest. An hour after the shooting, several police vehicles sat in front of a rowhouse at 413 W. Allen St. Inside the house, officers talked with residents. No crime-scene tape was set up.

Malphrus said at 10:05 AM, the sheriff’s office responded to a call at 133 Wise Street in Ridgeland. Malphrus said the boys were playing with their mother's gun—a .9 mm pistol according to Malphrus—as she made breakfast. The child, who was shot in the cheek, was air lifted to Memorial University Medical Center in Savannah. The sheriff’s office believes the injury is not life-threatening.

It happened early Saturday morning at the Cannon Place Apartments 1500 block of W William Cannon Drive. Police say the death of a man, believed to be in his 40s, was the result of a possible accidental shooting. He was transported to South Austin Medical Center with a single gunshot wound, where he was pronounced dead. The suspect, a man in his 30s, was attempting life-saving measures when officers arrived and is cooperating with police in the investigation.

(LINK REMOVED), 2/04/17: A young child was shot dead Saturday inside an apartment at Roosevelt Gardens in Jacksonville. The Jacksonville Sheriff's Office believes the shooting is accidental. A second child has injuries that are considered non-life threatening. “This is a tragic, unfortunate accidental shooting”, said Chief Chris Butler. At the time of the shooting the only occupants in the apartment were an 8-year-old boy, 5-year-old girl, and 4 year-old boy. Police say the mother had left the apartment to go to a store for an undetermined amount of time. The 8-year-old got a hold of a handgun and fired one shot, striking both the 5-year-old and 4-year-old. The girl died, and the boy is hospitalized with non-life threatening injuries. JSO, the State Attorney's Office, and Department of Child and Families is actively investigating the shooting. "I can't tell you where the gun was or how that child got access to it. Responsible gun owners should be securing their weapons, locking them up, making sure children don't have access to them or for that matter anyone else in the home", said Chief Butler.

Not enough Good Guys with guns. Not all people with guns are bad. We need more law abiding citizens with guns.

I own guns to protect my family my friends total strangers and last, myself. The second ammendment is there to protect all of our rights. It is not for hunting, but to protect us from a tyranny whether it be foreign or domestic. No such thing as as too much ammo or too many guns. Don't worry though, I will not judge anyone about their opinions. I will protect anyone, so long as they are not actively trying to take my rights. The reason the Japanese never tried to take the US on our soil was the fact our citizens were armed. One of the first things Hitler did as Chancellor of Germany was to disarm Germany's citizens. This world right now is as crazy as it has ever been. The very last thing we need is more gun control. We have way too much.

Before anyone condemns guns, get the facts straight. Very few people outside of our militias, can actual own an automatic weapon. Automatic weapons are not very accurate. They are designed to lay down ground fire so a person A can move another person B from one location to another. Outside of use in a militia, they really are not that effective. My rifle is sighted in that I can hit a walnut at 200 yards. That's all I need. I have never spent one minute in jail. I have never been a suspect in any crime outside of speeding. I am a Good Guy. We need a whole hell of a lot of Good Guys with guns, cause the mother effer bad guys are not taking any days off. For all those liberal f*@KS that want to take my rights away; when the shit hits the fan, they always call someone with a gun. I might be their neighbor and the best friend they ever had because I would be there well before the other Good Guys with guns. So, they should be careful, because their real neighbor may not be as forgiving as me. I truly hope and pray I never have to take someone's life, but I can if it preserves life. That life I save, could be a family member, a friend, a stranger, my own, hell it could be theirs. So get some facts before spouting off opinion. Don't base opinion based on fear. I hope I never have to use my car insurance. It does not stop me from driving nor do I let my insurance lapse. One of biggest fears is to have to take someone's life, but I am still prepared to, if someone's life is in danger. I would never shoot anyone for stealing my stuff. I can get more stuff. FYI Most gun toting citizens that stand up for our (yours and mine) US Constitutional rights feel exactly the same way. In fact, conservatives and liberals alike want to get that guns out of the bad guys hands. We just have different approaches. The good guys withguns want all good guys to have guns. Here is an example let's say 7 out of 10 adults had a CWP, (concealed weapons permit) and were carrying a hand gun. How many banks would get robbed? Convenience stores? How about rapes? See criminals are not dumb. They know statistics too. They base their actions on risk. I say arm as many Good Guys as we can. Let's take the streets back. Let's make our neighborhoods safe. I walk with no fear. It is a good feeling. See 10 years ago I was saying the same damn thing. Why would you ever need an extended magazine or a tactical rifle or 3 hand guns? I was afraid of guns. There loud and destructive. I did not ever believe that guns should be made illegal though. I kept my distance on the issue and always believed I should never infringe on anyone's rights. Then I was invited to shoot one day. I was shown the proper way to handle a gun. I was shown how to respect a gun. I was hooked. Now my only fear is having to actually use one in a life and death situation. Not afraid to die for standing up for what is right, but afraid that I will have to take someone's life. See Gunner doesn't miss often. So if I fire, the likelyhood that the target will cease to breathe, is quite high. That is why it will be my last resort. All avenues of resolving conflict will be used before I fire a weapon. I suggest everyone find a responsible gun owner and have them go over gun safety, how to respect it and how to fire it. The least that can happen is that a second side of a coin can be seen. Then, when firing off opinion one can be informed first hand as opposed to political rhetoric. The worst thing one can do is base an opinion on someone else's opinion. It is best when one forms his own opinion based on his own fact finding. One must always keep in an open mind.

Man Accidentally Shoots Self in Leg After New Gun Purchase

SANDY, Utah (ABC4 Utah)- A 29-year-old man is recovering after police say he accidentally shot himself in the thigh.

It happened around 10:30 a.m. Wednesday in the Scheel's parking lot (that's 11282 South State St.).

Lt. Dean Carriger with Sandy Police Department said he had just purchased the weapon.

"He took that gun out to his vehicle in the parking lot, at which time he loaded the handgun and attempted to put that gun in a holster."

That's when the gun discharged, shooting him in the right thigh.

Lt. Carriger says he is expected to survive his injuries.

"If you decide to go out and make a purchase of a firearm, make sure you understand how that firearm operates before you start to manipulate that firearm," the lieutenant said.

FORT MYERS, Fla. -- Police are investigating a shooting that sent a man to the hospital Wednesday afternoon.

It happened at a home in the 2600 block of Jackson Street.

Officers say the victim accidentally shot himself in the rear end, and then walked to Lee Memorial Hospital for treatment.

The victim is expected to recover.

Man accidentally shoots friend in leg

FORSYTH COUNTY, Ga. — While looking at his friend’s new guns, a man accidentally shot the friend in the leg.

The friend said he was showing the man his new guns and told him the gun was unloaded. The man looked at the first gun and pulled the trigger and nothing happened. He did it again with the second, but didn’t realize it was loaded and accidentally shot his friend in the leg.

The friend was helped by EMS and the shooter wasn’t arrested because all evidence indicated this was an accident.

MIAMI-DADE COUNTY, Fla. - A 19-year-old man was arrested Thursday on a manslaughter charge, a day after he accidentally shot his friend in the head at a northwest Miami-Dade County home while they were playing with a loaded gun, police said.

According to an arrest report, Brandon Velez and Bobby Duverny, 20, were hanging out at another friend's home at 14910 NW Ninth Court shortly after 5 p.m. when Velez and Duverny began playing with the gun, pointing it at one another and mishandling the firearm.

Police said Velez pointed the gun at Duverny, who grabbed the barrel.

Police said the gun discharged when Duverny grabbed it, striking him in the face.

The bullet exited toward the back of his skull.

Police said Duverny collapsed on the floor and Velez ran out of the house while another friend called 911.

Miami-Dade Fire Rescue crews pronounced the victim dead at the scene.

Police said the witness provided a statement to investigators, identifying Velez as the person who shot the victim.

Velez was found at his home and was taken to the Homicide Bureau for questioning.

Police said Velez confessed to his involvement in the shooting. They said he also admitted to trying to burn the clothing that he was wearing at the time of the shooting and disposing of the gun.

Velez led police to the burned clothing and hidden gun, the report said.

Velez was arrested and is being held at the Tuner Guilford Knight Correctional Center.

KCSO reports 16-year-old shot himself in leg earlier today

BAKERSFIELD, Calif. - The Kern County Sheriff's Office responded to a call at 1311 Reese Avenue earlier Wednesday morning and found a 16-year-old juvenile suffering from a self-inflicted gunshot wound to the lower left leg.

The juvenile was transported to a local hospital to be treated for the injury.

Two other juveniles were present but uninjured and the firearm was located. KCSO is currently investigating

No idiot with a gun. Did you not read my entire message? People must be taught how to handle and respect a gun. I can pull up a 1000 times the number of idiot things drivers do. Should we outlaw cars? Stay the fuck away from my Constitutional Right to Bear Arms.

See Stumbler, everyday lives are being saved by guns. You dont want to hear about it, but there are. I have my CWP. I am a good guy. As long as my rights are infringed upon, I have no beef with anyone. Before you or anyone forms a righteous opinion, gather some facts. First off, every one of those reports you acknowledged are idiots with guns. Second, if you say all gun owners are idiots because of a few reports of idiots with guns your logic is argumentum ad absurdum. A similar argumentum ad absurdum, would be to outlaw cars because all drivers ar idiots. Now, we know all to well, that there are idiot drivers. That fact, doesn't stop very many people from driving or owning a car. I can pull up report after report of incidents with guns. The Good Guys do not out number the bad guys, unfortunately. So with your logic we take the guns out of the citizens hand and trust our police and government to protect us? Good luck with that. I have been accused of burying my head in the sand, but that is utterly absurd. I love my country, but I certainly do not trust my government. I trust most police officers, just like I trust most people. I trust myself though, far more than either of those. I may someday be the last line of defense between life and death. It might be my life I save or it might be yours. Irony has a funny sense of humor. Like the store owner whose life was saved because a Good Guy with a gun ignored a sign saying no guns allowed. His opinion changed after looking down the barrel of a shotgun. Good Guy shot and killed the would be robber/possible murderer. Karma sometimes shows her face in the form of irony. Lol I sleep well at night knowing that I live in a country that I can protect my family, my friends, total strangers and myself... that I still have that option.

And if you had bothered to actually read the thread you would know that has been my point all along. My grandmother taught me how to be safe with guns and how to shoot when I was 8 years-old. And I never thought I would see the amount of gun carelessness we have in this country now. Which is proof positive we have more "gun rights" in this country than we have gun sense and responsibility to go with them.

We, and especially responsible gun owners, really need to stop this insane idea that a gun is an answer for everything and everyo9ne should own a gun because not everyone can be trusted to be safe and responsible with guns.

I have offered this challenge many times before and haven't found any takers but lets see if you are willing to put your efforts where your mouth is.

Pick a time frame like a week or a month and you put up all the instances you can find of someone's life being saved by a gun and I will put up all the gun accidents I can find and lets see who is right.

You just committed the logical fallacy you falsely accuse me of. Because I have never said any such thing as all gun owners are idiots. Because they I would also be calling myself an idiot.

What I have been saying all along is we have too many idiots with guns and we have lost the respect that guns must have in order for people to be safe and responsible with guns.

We need to get back to the most basic rule of a gun. Carelessness with a gun is never allowed. Not even once and not even for a second because people and especially little kids get killed in that fraction of a second of carelessness.

So we need to get back to promoting gun safety and responsibility above gun ownership.

Again if you had bothered to read the thread you would know how stupid this argument is. But just for you I will shoot it down again.

Far more people own cars in this country than they do guns. Automobiles are absolutely essential to most people's lives while guns are not necessary. And there is and always has been a concerted effort to constantly reduce the number of automobile accidents up to and including prohibiting people who are careless and/or drunk drivers from operating automobiles.

We require people who operate automobiles to have a license. And we require insurance on automobiles.

And none of that is true for owning and operating guns which are designed to be lethal.

Let's see here. We are talking jets and bombs, drones, machine guns, grenade launchers, and artillery versus rifles and hand guns. What is wrong with this picture?

Now this could be true. I don't know you. But I do know statistically at least that if you have a gun in the house it is much more likely to be used to kill or injure an family member and/or friend or commit suicide.

And while that might not apply to you it damn sure is true on a national basis as the statistics tragically prove.
