Nine of the 73 guns discovered in carry-on luggage by TSA agents at airports across the country, during the week of March 6-12, 2017.

No let-up in early March. Twenty-three people accidentally shot themselves (that we know of), and ten kids were accidentally shot. Four people accidentally shot family members or significant others. Three people accidentally fired their guns while they were out shopping and dining with the rest of us. We also had two each in the categories of accidentally firing weapons while cleaning them, and accidentally firing rounds into neighbors’ homes. You know, an average week.

What’s new and unique from this week? Well, there’s the guy who accidentally shot his Uber driver in the back while moving his gun from one jacket pocket to the other. An elderly gentleman in Cincinnati, confused by the arrival of a firefighter conducting a welfare check, and unresponsive to phone calls and knocks on the door, mistook the firefighter for an intruder and fired at the door he was forcing open. The woman in Virginia who, finding herself involved in an argument, got “protected” right into the hospital by a third party who went to retrieve a gun from elsewhere in the house. To make sure nothing got out of hand, I guess.

And finally, for the topper, yet another Florida gunslinger decided to bring his pistol with him to the movie theater (for “safety,” no doubt), and ended up becoming the theater shooter. Seems he ran into the familiar problem—which nobody seems to have any intent of solving—of what to do with his prized possession while using the facilities. As is the custom, it seems, he went with the old “balance it on top of the toilet paper dispenser” trick. And it actually worked just fine, until he went to return his pistol to its holster, at which point he accidentally fired it and shot himself in the hand. Extreme infection risk, by the way! The man did have a valid concealed carry permit, by the way. But he might as well have used it in the bathroom (if you know what I mean) for all the good the supposedly “rigorous training” did him.

(LINK REMOVED), 3/05/17: Police are on the scene of reports of an accidental shooting at 5500 block of White Hills Drive in the Avimor subdivision, that is up Highway 55 in Eagle. No word yet if anyone was injured.

(LINK REMOVED), 3/05/17: Two men were injured Sunday evening when a handgun accidentally went off inside an apartment complex in Laguna Niguel, police said. Around 8:30 PM Sunday, a resident on Seafare, a small street off of Seaglen Drive that leads into the complex, was showing off his gun to a visitor when the firearm accidentally discharged, said sheriff’s Lt. Steve Gill. The injuries are not life-threatening, Gill said. The gun owner was taken into custody on suspicion of negligent discharge of a firearm, but he had not been booked because he was in the hospital.

(LINK REMOVED), 3/05/17: A Kalamazoo man is recovering after an accidental shooting. Officers tell us the 25-year-old arrived at Bronson Hospital with a bullet wound to his leg last night around 8 o'clock. After finding the gun used and narcotics, investigators now believe the victim accidentally shot himself. The case has been sent to prosecutors.

(LINK REMOVED), 3/05/17: An Uber driver was shot in the back in the early hours of March 5 on I-78 in Upper Saucon Township by a back seat passenger, who was charged Friday in the incident. The passenger, Stefan E. Zdanowicz, 24, was moving a legally concealed 9 mm handgun from one jacket pocket to another when the gun was accidentally fired, state police said. The bullet hit the driver, Christopher Coulthard, 33, in the back and exited his body, (LINK REMOVED) reported. Coulthard called 911 himself and was taken to Lehigh Valley Hospital, according to(LINK REMOVED). He was treated and released. Police said "it was determined that the passenger, Zdanowicz, was highly intoxicated." Zdanowicz, of Bethlehem, was charged with reckless endangerment, simple assault and criminal mischief. He was released on $7,400 bail.

(LINK REMOVED), 3/05/17: Chickasaw County Coroner Michael Fowler confirms the death of a Woodland man in an accidental shooting early Sunday morning. WTVA was told 25 year-old Maurice Chandler was in his home on County Road 269 in Woodland. He and others were inspecting a handgun when it accidentally discharged, striking Chandler in the chest. He was airlifted to the North Mississippi Medical Center for treatment, where he later died. Authorities say there is no reason to suspect foul play.

(LINK REMOVED), 3/05/17: A five-year-old male child was found shot in the head Sunday when police responded to a call for help in the 900 block of Page Street. Preliminary investigation shows that the child was transported to the hospital for his injuries. Police say there were two adults and four other children present at the residence when the shooting occurred.

(LINK REMOVED), 3/05/17: Madison Police have learned who shot a man overnight on Shelton Road. And they say it was all an accident. Police were called to 194 Shelton Road just after 11:00 PM Sunday night after a man went to Madison Hospital with a gunshot wound. The man reported the shooting happened at the Shelton Park Apartments. Officers say the incident happened inside the victim’s apartment. They believe a roommate was handling a loaded pistol when the shot went off. The victim was struck in the neck, but didn’t have life-threatening injuries.

(LINK REMOVED), 3/05/17: heriff’s deputies also responded to a home in the 9500 block of County Road 13 in reference to a possible shooting. The deputy who filled out the report said that, once on scene, 23-year-old Austin Troy Wilkerson told him that his friend Grady Daniel Sims, also 23, had shot him in the leg in an apparent accident. Wilkerson and Sims told the deputy that they had been playing with a handgun—listed in the report as a 9mm Glock 19—that they didn’t think was loaded. While sitting on the couch, Sims placed the gun on Wilkerson’s left leg and pulled the trigger. The gun fired, wounding Wilkerson about 6 inches above his knee. Wilkerson’s dad told the deputy the two men have been friends since high school and was unaware of any issues between them. According to the report the father characterized the shooting as a “very stupid accident.” No arrests were made, but the Major Crimes Unit was notified. Wilkerson was transported to a nearby hospital for treatment.
[*](LINK REMOVED), 3/05/17: Officers in the Marion/Adwolfe area are investigating what appears to be an accidental shooting. A medevac helicopter is on the way to the scene, where officers are performing an investigation.
[*](LINK REMOVED), 3/05/17: The Savannah-Chatham Metropolitan Police Department is investigating after a 4-year-old was shot in the hand at the Suburban Extended Stay Hotel on Abercorn Street, near the Truman Parkway a little before 10 AM Sunday morning. The victim's wounds are non-life-threatening. Police say it doesn't appear that there was any criminal intent involved. Police are seeking Anthony Taylor, 41, as a possible suspect in this case. He is described as an African-American male standing at 6'2" and weighing 350 pounds. He was last seen wearing a black Jordan shirt and black Jordan pants. He has short, buzzed hair and low-cut facial hair. He was last seen driving westbound on Abercorn Street in a silver 4-door Dodge with a paper tag.
[*](LINK REMOVED), 3/05/17: A veteran who fired gunshots at firefighters doing a welfare check on him at his residence said he thought someone was trying to break in. "The information I received he shot at the top of the door. Fortunately. Had he shot lower, into the door, he would have some firefighters easily," said Reginald Hocker, vice president of the union that represents Cincinnati's firefighters. Fire crews were called to assist police who also were called to check on the man about 9:15 AM Sunday at a home in the 4200 block of Spring Grove Avenue. Lt. Steve Saunders, police spokesman, said officers and firefighters summoned after the elderly man's friends were unable to get a hold of him. His friends were checking on him because he supposed to go to the VA Hospital for treatment. When his friends arrived, Saunders said, the TV was on, but no one answered the door. "Firefighters had to force entry into the property to locate the patient and at that time, gunshots were fired towards fire[fighters]," said District Fire Chief Mike Washington. Police then "neutralized the situation quickly, apprehending the shooter," according to a release from the Cincinnati fire department. A man at the home Sunday identified himself as Kenneth Mullins and said he was the shooter. He didn't want to talk on camera, but off camera he told FOX19 NOW he thought someone was breaking in. Mullins said he didn't hear anyone until that forced entry was made, and that's when he got his gun. No one was hurt. "It was just an unfortunate incident as far as I know," Hocker said. "I don't think that the gentleman was actually was trying to kill firefighters." Washington added: "Around the country, this situation has occurred in the past with other fire departments. Today was no different. There are inherent dangers anytime you're forcing into property." Officials with both the Cincinnati police and fire departments are investigating. The incident is prompting the fire union to call for more safety measures for firefighters. Hocker said they need updated bulletproof vests at all of the city's fire houses. New bulletproof vets are in Downtown firehouses, but not all locations: "The protection that we have isn't throughout the city," he said. Union leaders said they plan to meet this week with fire administrators to discuss Sunday's incident and how to prevent similar ones in the future. Hocker says the union also plans to address what he calls outdated and hand-me-down bulletproof vests.
[*](LINK REMOVED), 3/06/17: A West Price Hill man faces several charges in connection with the "accidental shooting" of his 1-year-old daughter, police said. Cortez Reed, 27, is still at large, but police filed three charges against him Monday afternoon. Reed faces charges of endangering children, obstructing official business and tampering with evidence. The shooting was reported at 10:18 AM in the 4200 block of Fehr Road. Police said Reed brought handguns into his home, and one of those guns was used to shoot Reed's 17-month-old daughter in the stomach. "It's a life-threatening situation," Lt. Col. Paul Neudigate, with the Cincinnati Police Dept., said. The little girl was rushed to Cincinnati Children's Hospital and was in surgery at about 11 AM, police said. "The circumstances of how the child was shot are completely unknown," Neudigate said. "We have a couple different stories at this time." Police have described Reed as armed and dangerous. He is biracial, has several facial tattoos, and was wearing red sweatpants and red gym shoes, police said. He is known to frequent several areas in Price Hill. People in the area are advised to use extreme caution and anyone who sees a man matching Cortez's description is asked to call 911. Jacob Harris and Alisha Jones believe they saw Reed shortly after the shooting. They said a man matching Reed's description emerged from a wooded area not far from the scene of the shooting. "We saw a man come running out of the woods with his hood up," Jones said. "We were, like, 'That's odd.'" "(The) man frantically jumped in the car," Harris told WLWT investigator Todd Dykes. "It was so fast. I noticed there was a woman that picked him up. ... I saw the red. I remember the red. I remember the hoodie. I remember it was a newer foreign hatchback. And yeah, I called the police as soon as I realized. We saw… someone's news report, it might have been yours on Facebook. And we went, 'Ah.' It clicked ." "It's scary," Jones added. "It's scary, and it's not something we're used to seeing around here." While police said the shooting appears to be accidental, it's not clear why Reed ran away from his home and injured child. According to an affidavit, Reed attempted to dispose of the gun after the shooting, placing it in a box and hiding it in the woods. Those who live nearby said the neighborhood is typically quiet and family-oriented. Jim and Jenny Mirus, who live four doors down, said they've lived in the neighborhood for 40 years. They knew something was wrong when they saw several police cars Monday morning. “We saw a fire truck and several police cars, then more police cars, then news trucks,” Jim Mirus said. “I was like, ‘Oh, my God.’ I ran in and told my husband, 'That’s not good. They’ve got yellow caution tape up,’” Jenny Mirus said. She said they have seen children playing in the yard of the home on several occasions.(LINK REMOVED)In January, a 9-year-old was shot and killed in Mt. Auburn. That killing remains unsolved.
[*](LINK REMOVED), 3/06/17: Police say a man accidentally shot himself in Atlanta early Monday morning. The incident occurred in the 600 block of Paines Avenue. Police did not provide information on his condition.
[*](LINK REMOVED), 3/06/17: KSP says that a teen in Grant County died after accidentally shooting himself. KSP responded to the call on Kelly Drive in Crittenden about an accidental shooting around 2:20 AM Monday morning. Detectives say that the initial investigation shows that 17-year-old Roy Hamon was manipulating a handgun when he accidentally shot himself in the head. KSP says that at this time, no foul play is suspected.
[*](LINK REMOVED), 3/06/17: Authorities in Oklahoma City are investigating a reported shooting on the city’s southwest side. Shortly before 2 PM on Monday, officers were called to a shots fired report near S.W. 29th St. and Olie. Investigators learned that two men were fighting when one of them pulled a gun. The pair wrestled over the gun and it went off, hitting a female bystander. The victim flagged down a police officer near S.W. 32nd St. and Shartel and was taken to a nearby hospital with non-life threatening injuries.
[*](LINK REMOVED), 3/06/17: Ponca City police responded to an accidental gunshot wound at 10:40 PM Monday in the 700 block of Monument Road. The injured party was transported by ambulance to the local emergency room. A report was taken.
[*](LINK REMOVED), 3/06/17: A 16-year-old male suffered a self-inflicted gunshot wound while hunting and trapping with his grandfather. A report indicates the juvenile swung a.22 caliber rifle around and accidentally discharged a round into his lower left leg. The incident occurred near the Tres Hermanas Mountains. The juvenile was transported to Mimbres Memorial Hospital and treated locally.
[*](LINK REMOVED), 3/06/17: An apparent accidental shooting Monday night sent a young North Platte man to Good Samaritan hospital in Kearney with a head wound and put another teen in jail. The name of the 18-year-old victim has not been released. Police say he was allegedly shot by his relative, Christian Vera, 19, who was showing him a handgun after the two played some video games. Police believe it accidently went off. Spokesman John Deal said officers responded to a 911 call at 8:43 PM in the 1100 block of W. 11th St. When they arrived, they gave medical attention to the victim until an emergency medical team arrived, and when the ambulance left for the hospital, officers talked to several people at the scene, who identified Vera. Deal said police found Vera in an alley behind the home. A mid-size handgun was found nearby in the alley. Vera was taken into custody without incident. Based on evidence and witness statements, investigators believe several people were playing video games inside the home when Vera produced a handgun to show to the victim. “During the process of showing off the handgun, Christian negligently discharged one round that hit the victim in the head,” Deal said. Deal said there is nothing at this time to indicate that any disagreement or quarrel occurred and the incident is believed to be accidental. Deal said Vera and the victim are related to one another. The victim was flown to Good Samaritan Hospital in Kearney. His current condition is unknown, Deal said Tuesday morning. Vera was charged with second-degree assault and use of a weapon to commit a felony and taken to the Lincoln County jail. One of the definitions of second-degree assault in Nebraska is recklessly causing serious bodily injury to another with a dangerous weapon, Deal said. However, the investigation is still active. Police suspect the handgun was stolen, Deal said.
[*](LINK REMOVED), 3/06/17: While Leavenworth police officers do not necessarily believe a man's story about how he was shot in the arm, authorities still consider the incident to be an accident, a police spokesman said. The incident was reported at about 12:30 AM Monday. Officers were called to Saint Luke's Cushing Hospital for a report of an accidental shooting. A 19-year-old man told police that he accidentally shot himself in his right arm while handling his grandfather's antique .22 caliber pistol, Leavenworth Police Chief Pat Kitchens said. The man's injuries were not considered life-threatening. However, officers recovered a 9 mm bullet from the scene where the shooting reportedly occurred. Kitchens said there are several inconsistencies with the story provided by the victim. He said the attention of police is focused on another 19-year-old man who is believed to have been present. Kitchens said the shooting will continue to be classified unless circumstances charge. "But we have quite a bit of work to do to sort out the facts," he said.
[*](LINK REMOVED), 3/06/17: Bullets flew on a west Rockford street which was the location of a shooting earlier on Monday. Police responded to the 800 block of N. Court Street a little before 10 p.m. Monday night for calls of shots fired. When officers arrived, they found shell casings in the roadway. No one reported being hit. Early Monday morning, on the same street, a man unintentionally shot himself in the leg. Arthur Swearengen, 55, was arrested as a result. He was also wanted on an unrelated charge out of Cook County.
[*](LINK REMOVED) 3/06/17: Police believe a shooting near Lake Stickney on Monday was accidental. A man in his 40s was shot in his hand, said Shari Ireton with the Snohomish County Sheriff’s Office. It happened about 4:30 PM on 12th Place W., between Lynnwood and Everett. The man was alone in the home at the time, Ireton said. He told detectives that he was placing the gun on a table when it fired.
[*](LINK REMOVED), 3/07/17: A man who showed up at Community Regional Medical Center early Tuesday, reporting he was the victim of a gunshot wound, likely sustained a self-inflicted injury, police believe. Sgt. Pete Boyer said the victim told officers he was shot in the leg at a bus stop near Catholic Charities at East Divisadero and North Fulton streets in downtown Fresno. The incident reportedly occurred sometime before 7 AM. Boyer said the victim told officers he walked from the shooting scene to the hospital, a distance of several miles. However, officers could find no blood near the reported shooting scene and the angle of the wound indicated the victim may have shot himself, Boyer said.
[*](LINK REMOVED), 3/07/17: A woman accidentally shot herself inside a Memphis Kroger, according to Memphis Police Department. Police said the shooting happened just before 7 PM on Tuesday at Kroger on South Third Street. The victim was taken to the hospital in non-critical condition. Kroger issued the following statement: Tonight, an unfortunate, isolated, accident occurred inside our Southgate Kroger Store. It saddens our Kroger family but we are happy to know the individual is recovering and no one else was harmed.
[*](LINK REMOVED), 3/07/17: An update to breaking news from Tuesday night after a shooting in midtown Jackson. Police told WBBJ 7 Eyewitness News, the victim was handling an old rifle without a stock when he accidentally shot himself in the foot around 9:30 PM along Fernlawn Street. No charges are expected.
[*](LINK REMOVED), 3/07/17: A Hope business owner is dead after what witnesses said was an accidental shooting that occurred Tuesday afternoon. Norman “Bo” Bobo died from injuries sustained after a handgun was reportedly discharged accidentally at his business, B&B Wrecker, in the 400 block of East 3rd St Tuesday, March 7. Hope Police and Pafford EMS were dispatched to B&B Wrecker at approximately 2:27 PM for an accidental gunshot wound. Officers and investigators from the Hope Police Department and the Hempstead County Sheriff’s Office arrived on scene quickly, followed directly by two ambulances from Pafford EMS.
[*](LINK REMOVED), 3/07/17: A Terrell man was injured in an accidental shooting on Tuesday night and airlifted to a Dallas-area hospital. At 9:03 PM, on Tuesday, March 7, 2017, the Terrell Police Department responded to the 1000 block of Houston Street on a report a man accidentally shot himself. Police say the man had a derringer-style pistol loaded with .410 buckshot when it accidentally discharged while secured in the front waistband of his pants. The man suffered gunshot injuries to his groin and inner thigh and was transported by CareFlite ambulance to the Terrell Municipal Airport where an awaiting CareFlite medical helicopter further transported him to Parkland Memorial Hospital in Dallas, Texas. No foul play was suspected in the shooting incident. The man was convicted of a felony in 2015 and will now likely face charges for unlawful possession of a firearm by a felon, according to police.
[*](LINK REMOVED), 3/07/17: A woman was seriously injured Tuesday night after inadvertently being shot in the leg during an argument by a third party in the 6100 block of Popes Creek Plaza, according to Prince William County Police. Thomas Riley Baggerly, Jr., 48, of the aforementioned address, was charged with reckless handling of a firearm and released with a court summons. Shortly after 8 PM, police responded to the scene and found a 52-year-old Haymarket woman suffering from a serious leg wound, after which she was flown to an area hospital with non-life-threatening injuries. Police said while the victim was involved in an argument with an acquaintance inside the garage of the townhome, another resident went upstairs to get a handgun and then accidentally discharged it. The round went through the floor and hit the victim.

[*](LINK REMOVED), 3/07/17: A New Britain man is facing charges after accidentally firing off a gun in a Bristol home, according to police. Marc Karmelowicz, 35, has been charged with unlawful discharge of a firearm and third-degree criminal mischief. According to police, Karmelowicz was visiting a friend in Bristol on Tuesday at 49 Gridley St. at about 7:15 PM. He had his gun with him in a holster. Police said the gun was legally registered and Karmelowicz had a permit that allowed him to carry a firearm. At some point during the visit, according to police, Karmelowicz took his pistol out of its holster for an unknown reason and accidentally shot one round off. He and his friend were the only ones in the home. Police said the bullet went through a bedroom wall and into a neighbor’s home. No injuries were reported. Karmelowicz was charged and released on a $2,500 non-surety bond. He is scheduled to be arraigned in Bristol Superior Court on March 20.
[*](LINK REMOVED), 3/08/17: A Westport man is facing charges after he accidentally shot himself in the leg in March. Westport Police served an arrest warrant to Dominic Demace of Westport on Thursday in connection to an incident last month. On March 8, 2017, detective responded to Norwalk Hospital after receiving reports that a resident in town was being treated for a gunshot wound to the left thigh. Officers were told that the incident happened at approximately 6:00 AM that morning on Oak Street in Westport. The patient, Demace, claimed he accidentally shot himself in the leg while he was cleaning a gun. Detectives wanted to further investigate the incident so they served a search warrant on his home. On Thursday, officers responded to Demace’s house to arrest him. He was taken to Westport Police Department Headquarters where he was fingerprinted and photographed without incident. Demace is being charged with reckless endangerment and unlawful discharge of a firearm. Since a juvenile was in the house at the time of the incident, an additional charge of risk of injury was added to his charges. He was held on a $25,000 bond and is scheduled to appear in Norwalk Superior Court on April 17.
[*](LINK REMOVED), 3/08/17: A 26-year-old Killdeer man accidentally discharged his personal firearm, shooting himself in the left leg in the Perkins parking lot on Wednesday morning. He was transported to the emergency room at CHI St. Alexius hospital in Dickinson, however Wilkie said his injuries do not appear to be life threatening. No one else was injured. The case has been forwarded to the state's attorney's office.
[*](LINK REMOVED), 3/08/17: A person in Rowan County was reportedly shot while being shown a gun at a business Wednesday afternoon. According to the sheriff's office, the incident happened along the 8800-block of Dogwood Drive in Kannapolis just before 4 PM. This is the address for Joel’s Garage and Used Parts. That's when investigators say the handgun accidentally went off and the person was hit by a bullet in the abdomen. The victim was taken to the hospital to be treated for injuries.
[*](LINK REMOVED), 3/08/17: One of three teenagers suspected in an armed robbery early Wednesday at an Orange County apartment complex apparently shot himself during his getaway, deputies said. The Orange County Sheriff's Office said an 18-year-old man reported at 12:48 AM that he had been shot in a drive-by at the Royal Palms West Apartments in Orlando. Deputies said they found two robbery victims at the complex, and their descriptions of the assailants matched the man who claimed that he had been shot. Items belonging to the robbery victims were found on the man who was shot and on two others, deputies said. "At this time, it appears that the injured suspect shot himself while leaving the scene of the robbery with his accomplices," the Sheriff's Office said in a news release. The man who shot himself was taken to Orlando Regional Medical Center with non-life-threatening injuries. The trio will be arrested on armed robbery charges. None of the robbery victims were injured.
[*](LINK REMOVED), 3/08/17: On March 8, a 41-year-old man on Frederica Place in southwest Macon told the cops that “he was taking his .380 handgun out of his left back pocket (when) his gun accidentally discharged. … The .380 round went through-and-through on the left side of his buttocks.”
[*](LINK REMOVED), 3/08/17: Police say a man accidentally shot himself in the leg in Hempstead. According to police, Michael Williams, 57, of Farmingdale, shot himself in the leg Wednesday night on Franklin Street. Police say Williams dropped the gun in the street and was arrested while being treated at the hospital. A second man, Steven Jackson, 65, allegedly found the gun, picked it up, and took off before being arrested around 10 PM, police say. Both men are facing criminal weapons charges.
[*](LINK REMOVED), 3/08/17: A juvenile boy made a court appearance Friday on charges that he fired a gun in his own home. Galesburg police Lt. James Bradford said the 15-year-old male of Blaine Avenue made that appearance in juvenile court on four counts of possession of ammunition without a FOID card, possession of a firearm without a FOID card and reckless discharge of a firearm. The boy turned himself in to police Thursday. According to a Galesburg police report, authorities responded to a home in the 200 block of Blaine Avenue for a gunshot at 6:20 PM Wednesday. The mother of the boy said she heard a loud bang from his upstairs bedroom "and white powder started coming from the ceiling" and plaster dust covered her as the bullet went through the south wall of the home, the report said. She then saw a hole in the ceiling. The 15-year-old then came downstairs with four other juveniles, and he and three of them ran from the house at that point. A male witness to the incident said he didn't know three of the boys, but believed they were between the ages of 16 and 17 and from the Quad Cities area. That witness further believed one of those juveniles brought the .45-caliber handgun to the home without a magazine. The witness further told police he believed the juvenile didn't realize there was a round in the chamber when handling the gun. Bradford said the boy had been held in the Mary Davis Home prior to Friday's hearing and it was not known if he was still there as late Friday afternoon.

Twin Falls Police said paramedics took the woman to the hospital and the severity of her injuries are unknown. Police received a call at about 1:15 PM of a woman who accidentally shot herself in a home on the 1000 block of Hoops Street.
[*](LINK REMOVED), 3/09/17: Chico police said a man accidentally shot his friend while showing his pistol to a group of people Thursday morning. It happened around 2 AM at an apartment in the 600 block of Pomona Avenue. Police said Daniel Slack, 27, accidentally fired the weapon. They said the design of the pistol required a pull of the trigger in order to disassemble it. Police said Slack didn't confirm the pistol was empty and didn't point the firearm in a safe direction before squeezing the trigger. Officials said a bullet hit one of Slack's friends, who was taken to the hospital with moderate injuries. The Chico Police Department is completing a criminal investigation which will be forwarded to the Butte County District Attorney's Office. The police department took this opportunity to remind people to always follow the basic rules of firearm safety.
[*](LINK REMOVED), 3/09/17: Fresno police reported Friday that a 17-year-old boy killed in a shooting Thursday in southeast Fresno died of a self-inflicted wound. The identity of the boy has not been released by police. The shooting occurred about noon in the 3800 block of East Iowa Street, where arriving officers found the victim in the back room of a home. Two other boys were on the property and one of the boys told arriving officers that he was in front of the home when he heard a gunshot, ran to the room and found his wounded friend. He also said that he saw a male climbing a back fence to escape the shooting scene. However, Lt. David Madrigal said Friday that homicide detectives determined that the victim and the two 16-year-olds were in the home in possession of a handgun when the boy was mortally wounded.
[*](LINK REMOVED), 3/09/17: A 24-year-old man was arrested Thursday (March 9) after a witness said he accidentally fired a gun through the wall of a 7th Ward double, striking a woman who lived in the unit next door. New Orleans police said Kenneth Lewis was booked on one count of negligent injuring and illegal use of a weapon related to the shooting of his neighbor. Police said the wounded woman was shot in the face. Deondra Anderson, 37, who was at the scene as police investigated, said the victim was struck after someone misfired a gun through a wall in her mother's home. She said the gunfire entered the other side of the double, injuring her mother's tenant who lived next door. Anderson said she was in the house, visiting her mother, when the shooting occurred. Police stretched yellow crime tape around the front of a blue double on the corner of North Miro and Laharpe Streets. The front door of one side of the double was open as police worked, and a group of people gathered near the front stoop of the other side of the double. Anderson was later seen talking to the group of people inside of the area roped off by crime tape. Anderson described the shooting as "a freak accident." NOPD said Thursday afternoon no other information about the shooting was available.

There's no report on anyone being wounded when the gun went off. Authorities say it happened March 9 in Prescott, Ark. "It is believed at this time that these individuals had no additional intent to use the firearms while on school property," Police Chief Joseph Beavers said. Someone reported hearing a gunshot from a male bathroom in the high school building, the police chief said. Then two males, ages 16 and 17, were seen leaving the bathroom and the campus. Police found the two teenagers and two small-caliber handguns at an apartment complex nearby. Investigators think the teenagers were showing off the guns in the bathroom when one accidentally fired, Beavers said. The spent bullet was recovered from the bathroom. The teenagers, whose names have not been released because of their age, now face one count each of aggravated assault and possessing a weapon on school property. Each also has been charged with one count each of breaking and entering and theft of property in connection with a series of vehicle burglaries where the guns had been reported as stolen.

Officers were called to a home at 506 S. 3rd St. about 12:48 AM regarding a shooting, said Warner Robins police spokeswoman Jennifer Parson. Edward McKellar, 43, suffered a gunshot to the head and was pronounced dead. Jemarcus Dwayne Duncan, 22, was arrested Thursday and charged with involuntary manslaughter and reckless conduct. Reginald Haulcombe Taylor, 34, was charged with possession of a firearm by a convicted felon and tampering with evidence. According to a release, the investigation revealed the three men were playing with a gun that they thought was not loaded. Alcohol is believed to have been a factor. A section of 3rd Street in front of the home was completely blocked off Thursday morning as evidence was gathered at the scene. The shooting is the city’s third homicide in a week. Two men were killed March 2 in a shooting at Jus One More nightclub. No one has been arrested although hundreds of people were in the building at the time of the shooting.
[*](LINK REMOVED), 3/09/17: On March 9th, 2017, Officers with the Winston-Salem Police Department responded to 2929 East Sprague Street on a reported shooting. Officers located Anthony Earl Johnson at the residence with a gunshot wound to his leg. Johnson told officers that he was in his residence when four black males entered armed with handguns attempting to rob him. Johnson advised he struggled with one of the males for control of a handgun and was shot. Johnson said he fled the residence leaving the four males inside. Winston-Salem Police Department Criminal Investigation Division, Patrol, Special Operations Division and Special Weapons and Tactics personnel responded to the scene establishing a protective perimeter around the residence. Police efforts included blocking/closing surrounding streets for approximately 30 minutes while officers searched for the armed males. The males were not located. Anthony Johnson was transported to North Carolina Baptist Medical Center where he was treated and later released for a non-life threatening injury. Investigators of this incident established that Anthony Earl Johnson fabricated the report of being shot during an attempted armed robbery to attempt to conceal that he had shot himself accidentally while alone at his residence. Anthony Johnson was arrested on March 27th.
[*](LINK REMOVED), 3/09/17: A North Pole man faces felony charges after he reportedly fired multiple shots inside his home and falsely claimed he and his girlfriend were being held hostage. Brian Thaddeus Pitts, 44, surrendered to a tactical team about 15 hours after he initially contacted Alaska State Troopers. He is charged with third-degree assault and second- and third-degree weapons misconduct. According to charging documents and a trooper news release, Pitts called 911 at 3:43 AM Thursday and said people were inside his house. Pitts said he and his girlfriend had locked themselves in a bathroom and he had fired a gun in self-defense. Troopers responded to the home and determined Pitts’ report of a home invasion was false. Pitts was distraught and there were bullet holes in the walls that appeared to have been caused by gunshots fired from inside the home, troopers said. Pitts called troopers again at 6:35 AM and asked them to enter his home because he and his girlfriend were being held hostage. Troopers responded but backed away from the scene at about 11:30 AM after efforts to contact Pitts were unsuccessful. Crisis negotiators were able to talk to Pitts and friends of his who spoke with him throughout the day. One told them Pitts’ girlfriend sounded afraid and Pitts could be heard coaching her responses, troopers said. A tactical team established a perimeter around Pitts’ house and were able to drive an armored vehicle up to his house and communicate with him safely. Pitts exited his home and surrendered at about 6:30 PM. Pitts told troopers his girlfriend came over the night before and they watched TV until she went to bed. Pitts said he stayed on the couch and was almost asleep when he got “fired on,” according to troopers. Pitts said bullets were flying all over the place and he couldn’t see where they were coming from. He said he returned fire with a 9mm handgun that belonged to someone else who lived in the house before running to a back bedroom. Pitts said his place was shot to pieces and there were a lot of spent shells on the floor but he didn’t think they all came from him, according to troopers. Pitts’ girlfriend told troopers she went to bed after an uneventful evening and awoke to the sound of gunfire. Pitts was pacing around the living room with a handgun, acted paranoid and said there was somebody inside the house. This went on for three or four hours until the woman got scared and locked herself in the bathroom. The woman let Pitts inside the bathroom after several hours but he was still jumpy and would not answer her questions. Pitts was waving the gun around near her head and it accidentally went off when he put it down at one point. Pitts eventually left the bathroom and she locked him out again because she was afraid he was going to shoot her, according to the woman’s statement. The woman attributed Pitts’ actions to a mental health issue and told troopers she and Pitts did not use drugs during the incident. Troopers searched the home and found a 9mm pistol and 26 spent shell casings scattered throughout the house. They found an equal number of holes in the walls, appliances, furniture and floors, all shot from inside the home. The couch had multiple bullet holes with burn marks around them, indicating the gun muzzle was extremely close when the shots were fired. Troopers found no evidence of a home invasion or return fire. The incident occurred in a neighborhood between Newby Road and Nelson Road in North Pole.
[*](LINK REMOVED), 3/10/17: A 17-year-old boy has been booked into King County youth detention for manslaughter after police say he killed a close friend in an accidental shooting south of Seattle. Donovan Spann was killed when a gun discharged Friday evening at a home in the White Center area. Highline High School principal Vicki Fisher told the Seattle Times that 18-year-old Spann was on track to graduate in June from New Starts alternative high school. According to the King County Sheriff’s office, the suspect invited Spann over to a home and the two were reportedly playing Russian roulette when the suspect fired and hit Spann in the stomach. Medics were unable to revive him. Spann’s older sister, Neenah West, said the family doubts that the young men were playing Russian roulette but also said the suspect would not intentionally hurt her brother. A memorial service is set for 1 PM Saturday at Highline High School.

Officers responded to the 4200 block of North 60th Street around 9:50 PM. The 28-year-old man was taking his handgun apart at home and didn't realize it was loaded. The weapon discharged, but no one was injured. Police issued the man a citation for discharging a weapon in the city.
[*](LINK REMOVED), 3/10/17: Baltimore police say an accidental shooting left a four-year-old boy injured. Police received a call Friday evening for a four-year-old walk-in shooting victim at an area hospital in northeast Baltimore around 6:20 PM. Authorities said two boys, four and six, were in a home on Falkirk Road near Rambelwood Road at the time of the shooting. The six-year-old pulled the trigger and shot his little brother in the upper body. The child is in stable condition and is expected to survive, police said. It’s not clear exactly where the father was at the time of the shooting, but police do say he was inside of the home. Citywide Shooting Detectives are currently investigating. Police did not say if the gun used was legally owned, or if the father will be facing any charges.
[*](LINK REMOVED), 3/10/17: A 17-year-old is stable at Regional One in Memphis after her 16-year-old friend accidentally shot her in Olive Branch, according to neighbors. Olive Branch police were called to the home on the 6300 block of Shenandoah Lane at about 10:00 AM Friday morning. There was a group of teens at the home when the shooting happened, according to neighbors. Friday was the last day of school in DeSoto County before Spring Break begins Monday. Police said in a statement that the 16-year-old who fired the weapon was taken into custody. Police have not said whether the teen will be charged with a crime. Several people were in and out of the home Friday. Family and friends would not speak on camera and the homeowner said he could not comment on the shooting. Neighbors said the 16-year-old was either cleaning the gun or playing with it when he discharged unexpectedly. The 17-year-old was shot above the neck, according to neighbors. Police have not released information about her condition. Multiple neighbors told FOX13 the teenager is expected to recover.

Police are investigating what they call an accidental shooting that happened on Denison street in Swoyersville around midnight. Police tell Eyewitness News two brothers got into an argument - and one man picked up a shotgun, to "Intimidate" his brother. They say he didn't think it was loaded and pulled the trigger. His brother, was recovering in the hospital Friday morning. The suspect is in custody.
[*](LINK REMOVED), 3/10/17: A Pittsburgh police detective who was accidentally shot in the foot by his partner Friday afternoon in Hazelwood was treated and released from a hospital. The incident occurred about 2 PM in the 200 block of Tipton Street, according to police. The detectives were conducting a drug investigation when one of them was attacked by a dog. The other detective fired his gun and struck the dog, but he also hit his partner in the foot, police said. The injured detective was taken to UPMC Presbyterian for treatment. He was released a short time later, police said. The dog ran from the area after the shooting, but was eventually found and taken to a veterinarian for care. The circumstances of the shooting are under investigation.

The victims, a 16-year-old girl and 14-year-old boy, were found in the living room of a residence on Santa Fe Trail after police were called to the shooting around 11:50 PM, according to a Little Rock Police Department report. Officials said the boy appeared to have a wound in his right arm, while the girl was shot in her right shoulder. Both were taken to Arkansas Children's Hospital in Little Rock for treatment, police said. An initial police report said the two teenagers were outside the residence when they were shot by an unknown assailant. But department spokesman officer Steve Moore said a man who was on the scene when police arrived later told police that both teens were accidentally shot when he moved a gun that was lying on a bed. The man told police that one shot was fired during the accident, hitting both teenagers, Moore said. Moore said the man is considered a "family friend" of the children. Moore said investigators consider the shooting accidental. He said charges on the man are pending further review from the Pulaski County prosecuting attorney's office.

It happened at the AMC Woodlands Square 20 in Oldsmar, just after 2 PM on Friday. Deputies say a patron, Nathan A. Schrage, 26 was in the bathroom when his gun discharged. Schrage had placed his firearm on a toilet paper dispenser and when he tried to put his gun back in the holster, it discharged and he was shot in the left hand. He carries a valid concealed permit, according to deputies. Fortunately, nobody was in the bathroom when his gun discharged. Some patrons at the movie theater said they aren’t concerned with guns inside theaters. “I just came in, enjoyed the movie, and I did enjoy the movie,” said Mike Nicolazzo. “I do pay attention for the exits, but not for anything other than someone maybe yelling fire, or a fight or something like that,” said Darrell Harris. Retired police detective Steven Gardner is concerned about violence in public places like movie theaters. “I do find myself looking around, where’s the exit, who’s sitting next to me?” he said. “You should be able to go to the movies, or go to the mall, or do anything in this society without fear of being shot.”
[*](LINK REMOVED), 3/11/17: Pinellas County Sheriff’s Deputies said Sunday Tampa Firefighter Logan McClain, 29, accidentally shot his fiance while getting his hand gun out of the car’s center console. Investigators said the 28-year-old victim was shot in the right thigh. She was taken to the hospital with injuries that were described as non-life threatening. Deputies said the shooting happened at approximately 10:42 PM, Saturday night at the intersection of Pasadena Avenue South and Park Street in Pasadena. Deputies were called to the intersection because of a suspicious incident. They said someone saw the victim being put in the back seat of a 2012 Toyota Tacoma pick-up truck by McClain. St. Petersburg Police stopped the truck on its way to the hospital and found both McClain and the victim in the back. Investigators said McClain is a firefighter and paramedic for the City of Tampa. Investigators said McClain and the victim were near their home when he got the gun out and it accidentally went off, while she was driving. The Pinellas County Sheriff’s Office said McClain has a valid concealed carry permit and foul play does not appear to be a factor in the case. The investigation into the incident is ongoing.

Emergency dispatchers sent police to a reported shooting at 1:15 AM on Saturday, said Officer Paul Cruz. Officers arriving in the 300 block of West 21st Street North found a man, 27, with a gunshot wound in his left hip. He was taken to a hospital in serious condition, Cruz said. Police are not looking for any suspects, Cruz said. Officers said information received indicated the wound might have been self-inflicted.

I don't cover suicides even though that is a leading cause of gun deaths. But if I tried to cover all the suicides let alone the homicides with guns it would be a 23/7/365 job.

The cities in the United States with the absolutely tightest gun control laws are the very cities with the largest number of gun murders .

France has among the toughest gun laws in the world but this has not prevented terrorists from using automatic weapons not once but a few times . Having an automatic weapon in France is as illegal as owning a tank under French law .

If anyone believes that the Second Amendment is antiquated I suggest that they work with their congressmen and women to amend the constitution .

And I can't help but notice that gun violence has not prevented any number of people from other countries from wanting to move here .

And that is exactly my point. I also support gun rights, own guns, still hunt, and am willing to bet I can out shoot almost anyone who posts on this thread with their guns let alone mine. But my point is that we have reached a point where we actually have more "gun rights" in this country than we have gun sense and responsibility to go with them. And that is because the NRA and their supporters constantly oppose any and all proposed restrictions no matter how common sense they are while the NRA keeps pushing the insane ideas that a gun is an answer to everything, and everyone ought to own one just to help their true benefactors, the gun makers, sell more guns.

Also I save a lot of time by letting David Waldman do all the hard work keeping track of gun accidents in his weekly GunFAIL column. And he is better at documenting them than anyone else.

But just to give you a better idea here is another site that tracks gun accidents daily. And if you look at it for a while you will probably be amazed how many gun accidents there are on almost a daily basis.

When he changes to his sock he lets everything go. Quite a bit of difference.

What he forgot was I was on here years ago. I left for a good while and when I came back my beliefs had changed completely. Back then he was in agreement with me. Now our views are different. He posted so much he don't remember me. I do remember him.

Eleven of 81 guns discovered in carry-on luggage by TSA agents at airports across the country, during the week of March 13-19, 2017

Well, looks like the week of March 12-18 was a pretty rough one. Sixteen people accidentally shot themselves, fifteen kids were accidentally shot, and there were eleven accidental gun fatalities. In addition, there were five law enforcement officers involved in gun accidents, three people who accidentally shot family members, three people who accidentally shot themselves but lied to the cops about it, three people who accidentally fired guns they were cleaning or clearing, two people who accidentally fired into their neighbors’ homes, and—oddly enough—two people accidentally shot to death at their own birthday parties.

Other unusual GunFAILs this week include another “I keep a gun under my pillow for safety, but you’ll never guess what happened ...” situation. Only you can, of course, guess what happened. “Luckily,” he only shot himself in the hand.

The second situation I feel compelled to call out is the sort of thing that’s actually used by gun rights advocates to bolster their case for the wider application of gun-carrying rights. Often during the debates over campus carry laws and other, similar measures allowing gun owners to carry in more places, the question arises whether gun carriers ought to be required to unload their weapons, or be prohibited (in the case of semi-automatic weapons) from carrying them with a round in the chamber. And here, gun rights advocates correctly point out that requiring gun owners to transition their weapons from one state of readiness to another (LINK REMOVED) to manipulate the weapon, and therefore to accidentally discharge it. Now, I didn’t say it was a rock solid argument, because of course it requires the admission that whenever gun carriers handle their weapons, there’s an increased chance of accidental discharge. But it’s an argument worth keeping in mind, because gun carriers keep proving it correct, as one man did in Lincoln, NE, when he encountered a posted notice at the Nebraska Outdoor Education Center declaring that all guns carried into the facility must be unloaded. What is Nebraska Outdoor Education Center? Well, it’s a shooting range. Plus some other stuff. Like education about where else you can go to shoot. And, to be fair, fish.

So, why does the staff of a shooting range (like the staff of almost all gun shows) require that all guns entering the premises be unloaded? Well, there are several pretty good reasons, but we needn’t go into them right now. Suffice to say that law-abiding gun owners who have come to the range to practice know the protocol, or quickly become aware of it, as this gentleman did. Anyway, it was—just as gun rights advocates warned—in the process of putting his gun in compliance with the regulation that this 63-year-old man accidentally shot himself (and not, luckily, his three grandchildren he’d brought with him) in the leg. Just goes to show you, as the gun rights advocates say, that the more often gun carriers handle their weapons, the more likely an accident becomes.

Zappala indicated that the gun involved was in the possession of a man named Paul Parrish. It was his home where the child was killed. The toddler and her mother, who live in Moon Township, had been visiting Parrish. “Parrish has a history of violence, he is a felon not to possess a handgun. That was his handgun. A warrant was issued for him yesterday and we are looking for him right now,” Zappala said. U.S. Marshals are assisting Pittsburgh Police in finding Parrish and the federal government may file charges as well. “As a felon not to possess and a child loses her life because he does indeed possess, there is principal here that would make it appropriate to prosecute him for the homicide. It would be a degree of manslaughter,” Zappala said. One other person could be charged in this case. According to Zappala, a woman purchased that gun for Parrish. That is being investigated as a “straw purchase,” wherein someone buys a firearm and lies about who ultimately will possess the weapon. That’s a federal offense.

(LINK REMOVED) 3/12/17: Deputies have determined the shooting of a 15-year-old boy on Sunday was accidental. The Travis County Sheriff’s Office was called to Hatton Hill Lane, near State Highway 130 and Webberville Road, at around 5:50 PM. They found the teenager shot in the abdomen and medics took him to University Medical Center Brackenridge in critical condition. Investigators determined the boy and another teenager were handling the gun and accidentally fired the weapon. Deputies say the 15 year old is in good condition at the hospital. While no charges have been filed, deputies say it is possible charges may be brought at a later date.

(LINK REMOVED), 3/13/17: The man who fatally shot his wife at their Orange home Monday evening expressed remorse today calling the incident a "freak accident." "I pretty much took my kid’s mother from them and I have to live with that for the rest of my life," said Robert Hand. 52 year-old Robert Hand describes 24 year-old Megan Smith as his common law wife. He said the gun was a gift to Smith for her to protect herself while he was gone at work. He said he never expected the weapon to take away the person he cared about the most. "I wish it was me instead of her, I would give up my life so she could stay with my babies," said Hand. The couple has been together for 7 years. They have two kids together, 3 year-old Rylan and 2 year-old Skyla who have no idea what happened. "They ask me every day where she's at, I don't know what to tell them," said Hand. "They are so young." Hand said he did not pull the trigger on the gun. He explains he picked up the handgun to make sure it was not loaded before they left their home. He said the gun suddenly discharged and a bullet hit his wife in the back. "She was sitting on the bed and she just fell back and I stayed with her,” said Hand. “I held on to her and tried to keep her alert, I didn’t know what else to do" said Hand. City of Orange Police officers responded to a home at the 500 block of Main Street at about 5:48 PM according to the release. Police do not believe the shooting was the result of a domestic disturbance or done out of anger but may have been accidental and done without intent to harm according to Captain Robert Enmon of the Orange Police Department. Captain Enmon said Smith was shot with a small caliber handgun. He said police have spoken to several witnesses who were also inside the home at the time. Guns are not toys and one should always treat a gun as if it were loaded Captain Enmon told 12News saying "never pull a trigger on something you do not want to destroy." The couple's two and three year-old children were home at the time of the shooting but Hand said they were in a different room. Hand said this is a mistake he will never forget. "It was a horrible accident that took the most beautiful person I ever met in my life," said Hand. Police have not made any arrests at this time and child protective services is involved.

(LINK REMOVED) 3/13/17: The man told police that the gun he “always” sleeps with accidentally fired, according to a Monday (3/13/17) Murfreesboro Police Report. Evidently, the accidental shooting occurred on Lascassas Pike at Gateway Apartments. The 26 year old man reported that while he was asleep he moved and hit the gun causing it to discharge. The man did not state anything else other than it shot him in his left hand when it discharged. Murfreesboro Police confiscated the revolver and the ammunition. The accidental shooter was transported to Vanderbilt Medical Center in Nashville with non life threatening injuries.

(LINK REMOVED), 3/13/17: The man investigators say is responsible for the tragic ending of a birthday celebration has been booked into the East Baton Rouge Parish Prison to face murder charges in the death of a 16-year-old boy. The East Baton Rouge Parish Sheriff’s Office identified the victim as Darius Plummer, 16, of Baton Rouge. Louisiana State Police identified the suspect as Octavio Bringas, 49. He is charged with second-degree murder. "I can't believe it; I can't believe it," said Derrick Ambrose, the victim's cousin. "I'm trying to grasp it right now." Ambrose added that Plummer left his home Monday morning to go to a friend's house. Investigators reported Plummer lived on North Harrells Ferry Road near South Sherwood Forrest Boulevard and I-12. "His friend picked him up to go over there to celebrate and next thing you know, he's on the floor," Ambrose said. Deputies said the shooting happened at Bringas' apartment complex on Southpark Drive near Airline Highway Service Road on Monday just before 1 PM. They said Plummer was found shot in the head and was rushed to the hospital, where he died. "Our detectives began working very quickly to interview those that were here at the apartment complex and they developed the suspect," said Casey Rayborn Hicks, spokeswoman for EBRSO. He said that he was "not coming back and would not talk to police," Bringas allegedly told a relative. The probable cause report notes that Bringas is an "undocumented person living in the United States." The Louisiana State Police Fugitive Apprehension Task Force captured Bringas along I-10 in Lake Charles less than three hours after the shooting. He was booked into the Calcasieu Parish Correctional Center, state police said. Bringas is believed to be the father of the friend Plummer was visiting. Bringas told detectives he was playing with a gun when he mistakenly fired it. It's not an easy pill for the Plummer family to swallow. "Why would a grown man be playing with a gun around a kid anyway? Why? For what?" Ambrose asked. Now, relatives want more answers and justice for a young man killed on his birthday. "I've been knowing him since he was a little baby. He's an outgoing kid, always clowning, joking around, goofing off every now and then. And to hear this out the blue, it's shocking," Ambrose explained.

Police were called at 8:22 PM to an area hospital when the boy showed up with the wound, Lansing Police Public Information Director Robert Merritt said. The teen originally said he was shot by someone else while walking in the 900 block of North Walnut Street. However, "police interviews uncovered inconsistencies in the victim's statement," Merritt said, and the boy ultimately admitted he had accidentally shot himself with a handgun inside a residence.

(LINK REMOVED), 3/13/17: A 20-year-old Round Lake Park man died early Tuesday during a celebration of his birthday after apparently being accidentally shot in the head by a friend, according to Lake County Sheriff's Office officials. David J. Graham was brought to the Northwestern Medicine Grayslake Outpatient Center on East Belvidere Road at approximately 12:45 AM with a gunshot wound to the head, according to sheriff's Sgt. Christopher Covelli. Covelli said Graham died shortly after arrival at the facility. Lake County Coroner Doctor Howard Cooper determined Graham's death was caused by the gunshot wound. A preliminary investigation determined that Graham, along with four other adults, were celebrating Graham's birthday while driving in a vehicle earlier Monday evening, Covelli said. Graham was the driver of the vehicle and pulled over in the area of west Monaville Road and west Old Monaville Road in unincorporated Lake Villa, according to the sheriff's office. Covelli said that Graham, along with Joey Gonzalez, 19, of, Round Lake, exited the vehicle and began firing a shotgun into the air. After firing the shotgun, the two re-entered the vehicle and Graham began driving, according to Covelli, who said that Gonzalez was sitting in the back seat at the time holding the shotgun when it discharged inside the vehicle, shooting Graham in the head. Gonzalez then moved Graham out of the driver's seat and drove him to the outpatient center for emergency treatment. "It does appear that it was not an intentional act," Covelli said. Nonetheless, Gonzalez faces several felony charges stemming from the shooting and a previous incident. As a result of the shooting, Gonzalez was charged with involuntary manslaughter, aggravated unlawful use of a weapon involving possession of a sawed off shotgun, and another count of aggravated unlawful use of a weapon because he did not possess an FOID card, according to Covelli. Covelli said the two other people present during the incident are considered witnesses. Gonzalez was also charged with residential burglary, after police say he was found to be involved in a burglary that occurred in Ingleside last October. Covelli said Gonzalez was a person of interest in the burglary and additional facts were developed during the death investigation "indicating his involvement." The shooting investigation was conducted by sheriff's detectives in conjunction with investigators from the Lake County Major Crime Task Force. Gonzalez was in custody of the Lake County Jail Tuesday afternoon after his bail was set at $300,000 in bond court. He is next scheduled to appear in court March 17.

The officer accidentally discharged his weapon and was struck in the hand at about 8:45 PM. He was hospitalized and underwent surgery. His injuries were non-life threatening, police say. (LINK REMOVED), 3/13/17: A .45-caliber handgun reported stolen in December turned up Monday when an Albany woman shot a man in the foot while she was showing it to him. Kensie Merritt, 24, of Albany, told police the gun just went off while she was talking with Jeffery Merritt, 35, also from Albany. Jeffery Merritt was transported to Samaritan Regional Medical Center in Corvallis, where he was treated and released. While at the hospital, he was cited for failing to register as a sex offender. Kensie Merritt was arrested and charged with third-degree assault and theft. She was booked into the Linn County Jail.

(LINK REMOVED), 3/14/17: Lincoln Police said that a man suffered non-life threatening injuries after he accidentally shot himself. The incident took place at the Nebraska Outdoor Education Center around 11:30 AM on Tuesday. LPD said the 63-year-old man was unloading the gun after seeing a sign that said it must be unloaded before going into the facility, when it accidentally fired and hit him in the leg. The man's three grandchildren were with him and no else was hurt. Public Safety Director Tom Casady provided some statistics on Twitter Tuesday about accidental shootings. Casady said there's been 12 accidental discharges reported to LPD in the last year. Of that number, five people were shot, none were killed. Six people had concealed carry permits.

(LINK REMOVED), 3/14/17: Homicide and child abuse detectives are investigating after a 12-year-old died from gunshot injuries at a local hospital. Police tell the Post-Dispatch that Damian Holmes, 12, and his 9-year-old brother were home alone Tuesday night in the 3300 block of Michigan Avenue when they found a gun and started playing with it. Police aren't saying who fired the shot that hit Damian in the head around 10:35 PM. The boys' father came home and took the 12-year-old to the hospital where he was pronounced dead. The shooting happened in St. Louis' Benton Park West neighborhood. Police continue to investigate this as an accidental shooting. Damian was a student within St. Louis Public Schools. A spokesperson for the district said a crisis response team is at the school for students and staff. District officials declined to identify which school he attended. This is the second fatal shooting of a child who was playing with a gun in just more than a month in St. Louis. On Feb. 13, (LINK REMOVED) by one of her three siblings in their Walnut Park West apartment while her parents slept in the next room. Mi'Kenzie's parents were later charged with involuntary manslaughter.

(LINK REMOVED), 3/14/17: Two 17-year-old boys were shot in the leg on Tuesday (March 14) after one of the teens accidentally pulled the trigger of a handgun while trying to stick it in the waistband of his pants. The two friends were hiking through the woods northwest of W. John Wright Lane, just outside of Mountainburg city limits about 1 PM on Tuesday, according to a Mountainburg police report. The boys' parents have given 5NEWS permission to use their names. Connor Rogers had a a .22-caliber handgun, which he admits he took from the kitchen drawer while his father was at work. He said neither of their parents knew they had taken a gun. "We decided to go home, and at that time I decided to put the gun in my pants," Rogers explained. "I'm guessing it hit the safety switch because I made sure the safety was on, but the police said don't trust the safety." He said he accidentally pulled the trigger and a bullet hit him in the left thigh and his friend Kendall Seratt in the right shin. The boy who was hit in the shin said he thought the bullet was lodged in his leg. Both boys were taken to Mercy Hospital in Fort Smith to get their wounds examined, and have since been released. "We're glad these juveniles were not hurt badly," Police Chief Vincent Clamser said. Seratt's mother said the bullet is still lodged in her son's right ankle, and they plan to see a specialist to figure out what to do next. Rogers said he is grounded and has learned his lesson. "I could have died, easy," Rogers said. Meanwhile Mountainburg Police said they want to make something positive out of this and remind people about gun safety. They offer free gun locks to the public. Chief Clamser said anyone in the area is welcome to stop by the department and get one.

(LINK REMOVED), 3/15/17: Jefferson Parish Sheriff Newell Normand said a fourth person has been found shot dead in a Metairie apartment complex that was the scene of a separate quadruple shooting this morning. The bodies of two men and one woman were found in an apartment at 2508 Pasadena Avenue in Metairie this morning, and one woman who was shot in the face was able to call 911. She is currently in stable condition at an area hospital receiving treatment for her wounds, Normand said. At a press conference from the scene of the quadruple shooting, Normand said officers performing a sweep of the area found an adjacent apartment with the door ajar. "We procured a search warrant, and we went into that apartment," Normand said. "We discovered a fourth individual murdered, a white male approximately 50 years of age, who we are in the process of trying to identify." Normand said it was too early to draw any connections between the two shootings, citing the ongoing investigation. "The investigation is still in its infancy," Normand said. "We're pulling together a bunch of information, and when we get to that juncture where we can release more about what we know about this, we will." Normand also gave more details on the accidental shooting that occurred this morning at the chaotic scene. An officer who was processing a weapon found at the scene was having trouble clearing a live round from the chamber of the gun, Normand said. The round went off after the bolt released in what Normand referred to as a "bolt fire." "The weapon was faced down to the ground, like we always do when we're clearing weapons," he said. "It [the round] hit some concrete and some brick, and the brick shrapnel is what hot the officer. He's fine."

(LINK REMOVED), 3/15/17: Two Gary men were charged with false informing after they lied to investigators about a shooting that wounded one of them, police said. Christian Barnett, 18, and Tevin Donelson, 21, met Gary police as they arrived about 9:15 PM. Wednesday at a home in the 4200 block of Adams Street after receiving a 911 call about a gunshot victim, Lt. Thomas Pawlak said. The pair initially told police they were walking in the area of 45th Avenue and Washington Street when they heard gunshots and began to run. They claimed Barnett collapsed as he ran, and Donelson helped him into a residence, police said. Barnett had a gunshot wound to his inner left thigh and left hand, police said. The men later admitted Barnett accidentally shot himself while inside a vehicle in front of the residence, police said.

(LINK REMOVED), 3/16/17: A man is being treated at the hospital after suffering an accidental self-inflicted gunshot wound at an Elkhart home. It happened around 1 PM Thursday in the 1100 block of Evens Street. The victim, a 44-year-old man, told police he was manipulating his handgun when it fired. The bullet hit him in his shin. The man was transported to a local hospital by ambulance and is being treated for a non-life threatening injury. The Elkhart Police Department wants to remind all gun owners about the importance of gun safety. They offer the following advice: 1) Always treat a gun as if it were loaded. 2) Always keep the gun pointed in a safe direction 3) Keep your finger off the trigger until you are ready to fire. 4) Store you gun in a safe place out of the reach of children.

(LINK REMOVED), 3/16/17: Police said a 21-year-old man and his 25-year-old male friend died when they were shot in an apparent accident here early Thursday morning. Sheldon Camarillo, 21, was pronounced dead at a hospital after he was found with a gunshot wound in the 800 block of South Bendix Drive. The other man, 25-year-old Casey McLean, died late Thursday afternoon, according to a news release from the St. Joseph County prosecutor's office. Investigators are not seeking any suspects in the shooting, which they believe happened while the two men were participating in "reckless" behavior with a firearm, the news release said. Police first responded to the scene just before 3 AM. The St. Joseph County Metro Homicide Unit was then activated to handle the case. Camarillo's autopsy was scheduled for Friday morning in Kalamazoo. An autopsy for McLean was in the process of being scheduled by the county coroner.

(LINK REMOVED), 3/16/17: A judge Saturday ordered that one of two Englewood parents charged after their 3-year-old son was accidentally shot be held on a $750,000 bail. Michael D. Riley, 34, was charged Friday with one felony count of unlawful use of a weapon by a felon, one felony count of possession of a controlled substance and four misdemeanor counts of child endangerment, according to Chicago Police and the Cook County state’s attorney’s Office. He appeared in bond court Saturday. Gwenddolyn Holloway, 28, was charged Friday with four misdemeanor counts of child endangerment, according to police. Riley has previous drug convictions and a pending misdemeanor aggravated assault case from earlier this year, according to court records. The shooting happened just before 5 PM Thursday in a home in the 6200 block of South Aberdeen, police said. A police spokesman said the boy was playing “cops-and-robbers” at the time. The boy was taken to Comer Children’s Hospital in critical condition, authorities said. Chicago Police said the 3-year-old boy was the youngest of at least four children left home unsupervised in an apartment without heat or hot water—“deplorable conditions,” according to a CPD spokesman. The four other siblings, who range in age from 5 to 11, have been placed in the care of a relative under a DCFS monitored plan, a statement from the Department of Children and Family Services said. Police said Holloway had a Firearm Owner Identification Card. Authorities say she owned a .40-caliber handgun; it was found in a lock box that had been left unlocked. A spent shell casing found next to the boy matches the caliber of the weapon recovered. DCFS is investigating the shooting, according to the agency, and both parents are being investigated for allegations of neglect. “DCFS has had prior contact with this family, including an indicated finding against the father for neglect in 2009, and two indicated findings against the mother for neglect in February 2013 and March 2013,” the statement from the agency said. DCFS “took custody of one of the children” after the March 2013 finding due to the neglect, the statement said. That child was placed in a “therapeutic setting.” The family was referred for services, and the mother has completed many of them, according to DCFS. A DCFS source said the mother had completed parenting classes, and a class for parenting special needs children. But the father, who was referred to those classes, remains “non-compliant.” Child welfare investigators have been denied access to the home by the family “on several occasions,” the DCFS statement said. The source said the agency also made unannounced visits to the home in 2016 and 2017, but no one responded. The shooting comes just over a month after 2-year-old Lavontay White was killed in a shooting on Feb. 14 in North Lawndale.

(LINK REMOVED), 3/16/17: A Lincoln man was cited Thursday evening after accidentally discharging his firearm, causing a bullet to go through his neighbor's house and into a child's bedroom, Lincoln police said. The man was cleaning his handgun just after 5 PM in the 1700 block of West Garfield Street. He thought the gun was empty but fired a shot after racking the slide, Officer Katie Flood said Friday. The round went out his home and into a child's bedroom of the neighboring home, Flood said. No one was in the damaged home and no injuries were reported. The man was cited on suspicion of discharging a firearm in city limits after calling police to report the incident.

(LINK REMOVED), 3/16/17: He accidentally shot himself in the stomach at a Bronx park—and shot himself in the foot when he blamed the blunder on a phantom black man. Cops arrested 20-year-old Arthur Palombo on Thursday, after seeing through his lies and determining the gunshot he suffered near the tennis courts inside Williamsbridge Oval Park off of W. 208th St. and Bainbridge Ave. in Norwood Wednesday was self-inflicted. Palombo accidentally shot himself in the left side of the stomach about 10:45 PM, police said. The bullet exited his left flank. First responders took him to Jacobi Medical Center. He told investigators he went to the park to show an old revolver he had in his apartment to a potential buyer he had met a few weeks earlier. The buyer, however, shot down the $100 asking price and shot him with the piece as they haggled over the price, he claimed. When pressed, Palombo, who is Hispanic, described the shooter as a black man with a bald head. Cops searched the park and found the revolver. When Palombo was released from the hospital, he was questioned by detectives again, this time admitting he was by himself and the gun went off accidentally in his jacket pocket. Prosecutors charged him with weapons possession and filing a false report. A judge ordered him held on $10,000 bail during his arraignment Friday, officials said.

Hampton police say a preliminary investigation found the woman was getting into a car when her firearm accidentally discharged. Two juveniles she knew were inside the vehicle at the time. Officers were called to Regal Way just before 8 AM Thursday for a report of a possible shooting. They found the woman, who has not been identified, suffering from a single gunshot wound inside the vehicle. She was pronounced dead at the scene. The incident is being investigated as an accidental shooting. Police say there does not appear to be foul play involved. Regal Way resident Oscar Chavez says he was taking his daughter to school this morning when he saw the blocked road. “I saw a lot of police cars, fire, ambulance. They didn’t let nobody go down there,” he said. “I said, ‘Something’s wrong here.’ I said to my daughter that it’s something serious.” Brenda Marks, who also lives in the community and is a friend of the victim’s neighbor, says she remembers the woman as a good person. “She was always jovial when I was around her,” Marks said. “She would always say stuff that would make you laugh.” Marks says it’s a tragedy knowing this happened, especially since there were two juveniles in the car. 10 On Your Side is still working to confirm if the victim was related to the juveniles. Marks says the woman did have children. “She adored her children. She was focused on getting them a good education,” she said.

A source on scene confirmed with NBC5 that it was an accidental shooting. He says those inside the house were looking at a gun when it went off. One male was hit with a bullet in his hand, and a female in her leg. Police believe it to be a husband and wife. Alex Trujillo who lives across the street says he was shocked to hear about the shooting because he didn’t know they had a gun. But he knows the couple who lives there to be good, responsible people. “He just works on washers and dryers out in front of his house and it’s kind of weird… it doesn’t seem like something he would do. I mean it seems like he knows how to handle a gun,” Trujillo said. The source on scene said they are being treated at Rogue Regional Medical Center. Central Point police say their injuries are not life-threatening. This is an ongoing investigation.

(LINK REMOVED), 3/16/17: A Texas Department of Public Safety trooper was hospitalized Thursday night after he was shot in the chest during an apparent home invasion in Kirby. According to Sgt. Orlando Moreno, a spokesman for the Texas Department of Public Safety, troopers were responded around 11:45 PM to an attempted home invasion at a trooper's home in the 5100 block of Tom Stafford Drive. Authorities said the trooper, who was off-duty at the time, came home and heard a noise at his backdoor. Moreno said the trooper "retrieved his service firearm, put on his protective vest and went to investigate an intruder in his backyard." As he walked out the backdoor, "he was immediately attacked by a male suspect who tried to force his way into the trooper's residence," Moreno said. During the fight, the trooper's gun discharged, but the bullet was stopped by the trooper's vest. By the time authorities arrived to the scene, the suspect had fled. The trooper, who's name has not been released, was transported to San Antonio Military Medical Center, where he is currently being held for further evaluation. Authorities have not provided a description of the suspect. Moreno said the Texas Rangers are investigating the incident. The Bexar County Sheriff's Office, San Antonio Police Department and the Kirby Police Department are all assisting.

(LINK REMOVED), 3/16/17: A five-year-old boy is recovering after he found a gun at his Fort Worth home and shot himself. In what police are calling a very close call, the child found the gun on a nightstand next to his parent’s bed. They had just bought the new handgun. As their son played with the loaded gun, it went off. The bullet went through the child’s hand. MedStar took the him to Cook Children’s where doctors described his injury as only minor. However, the incident is anything but minor to police. Investigators from the Crimes Against Children Unit are looking into the incident and the parent’s may face charges.

(LINK REMOVED), 3/17/17: Two children were injured after an apparent accidental shooting outside a Chuck E. Cheese's restaurant Friday evening in southwest Fort Worth, police say. Fort Worth police responded at about 6 PM to the restaurant off Southwest Loop 820 near the Hulen Mall. Two 3-year-old children were exiting a vehicle when one of the children found a gun inside the vehicle and shot himself in the hand, according to police. The bullet also struck the other child in the side. Both children were transported by a private vehicle to Cook Children's Medical Center. Fort Worth police are investigating and say it is unknown whether charges will be filed. Further details have not been released.

(LINK REMOVED), 3/17/17: A bullet accidentally fired by a U.S. Border Patrol agent went into a neighbor's home Friday morning in Horizon City, police officials said. No one was injured when a single bullet went through a window into a house and became lodged in a wall at about 6:30 AM on Lago De Oro Drive, Horizon City police officials said. Horizon City police investigating the shooting found that the an off-duty Border Patrol agent had accidentally fired a weapon, police said in a news release. The incident is under investigation by the Horizon City Police Department and the Border Patrol.

Family members said Maurice Horton went to visit his 82-year-old friend, Roosevelt Hodge, Friday evening at Hodge's home in the 2500 block of Hanwood. Hodge apparently shot Horton. "It was mistaken identity," said Horton's nephew Michael Minor. "Mr. Roosevelt got confused and thought my uncle was a man he saw earlier in his yard. He shot my uncle but it was a mistake." Memphis police initially sent out a press release Tuesday naming Roosevelt Hodge as the shooting victim and not the shooter. Police later sent a second press release at 11:37 AM Tuesday correcting the name of the man who was killed. "Police got that wrong. My uncle was shot and killed by his friend," Minor said. "We don't blame the man." Minor said his uncle owned an upholstery business in North Memphis and was a good man. "It is real hard losing him," Minor said. Minor lives around the corner from Hodge. He said his uncle, Maurice Horton, called him after he had been shot. "We get around there and he is on the sidewalk," Minor said. "He said his friend shot him." Minor said police took Hodge downtown for questioning. Horton's son, Vincent Horton, said his father was a deacon and a trustee at Full Gospel Missionary Baptist Church on Manassas. "We're sad and we don't blame Mr. Roosevelt," Vincent Horton said. On Tuesday, Hodge was back at home when his longtime neighbor Callan Tucker went check on him and his wife around 11 AM. She went into the home and was told by a family member inside that the couple was asleep. "They are marvelous people," Tucker said. "I've known them all my life and they are good people. Mr. Roosevelt didn't mean to shoot that man. It was mistaken identity." Tucker said she hopes her neighbor is not charged in the slaying. Police said no charges had been filed late Tuesday.

(LINK REMOVED), 3/17/17: A Mount Jewett woman sustained what police say was an accidental gunshot wound in the upper arm Friday afternoon in Foster Township while helping a friend sort through her late husband’s belongings. Emergency personnel were dispatched to 362 Lafferty Hollow at 3:27 PM Friday for a call of a shooting victim. Foster Township Police Chief Tom Munn said George Ann Krouse, 47, of 22 W. Main St., Mount Jewett, and her boyfriend, Ron Dietrick, 60, of 341 Lafferty Hollow, were at the home of Nina Dawley at 362 Lafferty Hollow. The couple was helping Dawley sort through some items that had belonged to her late husband when one of them found a gun case. Inside the case was a .22-caliber, nine-shot revolver. Dietrick took the firearm out of the case and checked to see if it was loaded, police said. “He was trying to unload it when it discharged,” Munn explained. “The bullet struck (Krouse) in the bicep. It went through her bicep and struck her thumb.” Police said they recovered the bullet on the floor. Munn said Krouse was taken to Bradford Regional Medical Center by Bradford City Ambulance. “She’s very lucky,” Munn said. “If it went into her chest, it could have been much worse.” He added that Krouse was conscious and alert and in good spirits after the incident. “It’s still under investigation and it appears accidental,” Munn said of the shooting. “There are no charges at this point.”

(LINK REMOVED), 3/17/17: The shooting that claimed the life of 15-year-old Keon Huff Jr. this month was accidental, the Hartford teen charged with the killing told investigators, according to court records released Monday. Tywone Edwards Jr., 17, said he thought the gun's safety was on as he played with the gun, pointing it at others in the rear hallway of a Garden Street apartment building on March 17. Edwards said that while pulling the trigger, the gun fired and a bullet struck Keon, according to an arrest warrant affidavit released to the public Monday following Edwards' arraignment in Superior Court. In a statement to detectives on Friday, Edwards acknowledged "pointing the gun at everyone" that evening and insisted that the shooting of Keon was an accident. "Edwards said Huff was his friend and he shot Huff by accident," the affidavit said. Edwards told investigators that Keon had been sitting down, but when he got up, the gun went off. After seeing a hole in Keon's head, he ran, the affidavit said. A witness told detectives that Edwards' friends yelled at him when he began pointing the gun at them. They told him to put it away but Edwards would not listen, according to the affidavit. The document does not say how Edwards obtained the firearm. After the shooting, Edwards pointed the gun at two of the people he was with and told them to pick up the shell casing, a witness said. The witness told investigators he was scared and thought Edwards would kill him, the affidavit said. A witness said they stepped over Keon's body as they ran off. After one of the individuals tossed the shell casing, they ran to Enfield Street, where Edwards hid the gun behind a house, the witness said. Police tracked down Edwards and took him to police headquarters for questioning. His father, Tywone Edwards Sr., 35, was there when his son was questioned. The younger Edwards admitted to detectives that he threw the gun into a yard on Enfield Street and went home, the affidavit said. Officers went to the Garden Street apartment building after a report of gunshots or firecrackers in the area. There, they found Keon with a gunshot wound to the head, the affidavit said. A paramedic pronounced Keon dead. Edwards was arraigned as an adult in Superior Court after a hearing earlier on Monday in juvenile court. Superior Court Judge James M. Bentivegna, citing the severity of the charges as well as Edwards' juvenile record, set bail at $1 million. Bentivegna reviewed Edwards' juvenile arrest record and provided copies of it to his lawyer and a prosecutor, but did not reveal any details. A bail commissioner said that Edwards was not attending school at the time of his arrest. Edwards, his hands shackled to chains around his waist, stood quietly as defense attorney Deron Freeman told the judge the warrant for Edwards' arrest did not contain any evidence of murder. There's "only Mr. Edwards' own statement it was an accident," Freeman said. Bentivegna said that since a judge had signed the warrant and found probable cause to arrest Edwards, the issue was moot for now. Outside court, Freeman repeated his view that the shooting was not intentional. "It appears as if they were friends and it appears it was an accident," Freeman said. Edwards was arrested late Friday after an "exhaustive" investigation by detectives, police said. He faces charges of murder, tampering with evidence and carrying a pistol without a permit. Police said they received immense support from the community, including pictures and eyewitness reports, that helped result in the arrest of Edwards. Edwards is due back in court April 19. In the wake of Keon's death, officials with the state Department of Children and Families acknowledged they have been reviewing their involvement with the teen and his family. Records show that Keon, who had been arrested and reported missing a number of times since 2013, slipped through the grasp of public agencies in the weeks before his death. On March 2, he bolted from DCF custody and surfaced on March 8 when he was arrested by Newington police. Absent a take-into-custody order, necessary for Keon to be held in detention, Newington police turned the teen over to DCF, his legal guardian, but he fled their facility on Hamilton Street on March 8. A take-into-custody order was issued eight days later on March 16, the day before he was fatally shot. Questions remain as to why DCF accepted Keon back even after bolting days earlier and why the justice system did not intervene when the teen was arrested by Newington police.

(LINK REMOVED), 3/17/17: A man accidentally shot himself in the finger and the bullet continued into his knee Friday evening, according to the Springfield Police Department. The incident occurred in the 1900 block of 5th Street in Springfield. It was reported as a gunshot wound around 6:53 PM. Police say three people witnessed the incident. They say the victim was bleeding from his hand, was pale, sitting down and alert. One witness started first aid on the man’s hand. When medics arrived, they treated the victim and transported him to a hospital.

(LINK REMOVED), 3/18/17: A 22-year-old Bend man is in the hospital after authorities say he was accidentally shot by a friend who was unloading a handgun. The Deschutes County Sheriff’s Office says Trevor Rogers was airlifted to St. Charles Medical Center in Bend Saturday night with injuries not considered life-threatening. The office says 21-year-old Julian Messner accidentally shot his friend. The office says he mistakenly thought he had removed a round from the chamber of the semi-automatic handgun. No criminal charges have been filed against Messner but the case is being sent to the Deschutes County District Attorney’s Office for review.

(LINK REMOVED), 3/18/17: A 17-year-old girl was accidentally shot in the leg late Saturday in Northglenn. Police say the shooting happened about 9:30 PM on the 18000 block of Washington Street. The teen was taken to an area hospital with a non-life threatening wound. “Officers were advised on scene that the shooting was accidental,” police announced Tuesday. “The incident is currently under investigation by the Northglenn Police Department.” No arrests have been announced. No additional details about the shooting were released.

(LINK REMOVED), 3/18/17: A 15-year-old Orion Township boy is hospitalized in critical condition after police say he was shot in the head by his best friend Saturday night in Pontiac. “The victim and suspect are best friends and detectives are trying to determine if this was an accidental discharge of the weapon,” the Oakland County Sheriff’s Office said in an incident report. “The incident remains under investigation.” The teen was unconscious in a bedroom when deputies arrived at the 100 block of Wall Street. He was first taken to McLaren Oakland hospital in Pontiac and has since been transported to Children's Hospital of Michigan in Detroit, the report said. Deputies said his friend, a 14-year-old Pontiac boy, shot him with a .32-caliber handgun that was located in the backyard of a neighboring property. That teen was taken to Oakland County Children’s Village, the report said. Detectives spoke to three juveniles who were at the home when the shooting took place as part of the investigation.

(LINK REMOVED), 3/18/17: The father of a 10-year-old boy killed in an accidental shooting in Newark on Saturday was arrested during the investigation on charges he assaulted an officer who responded to the scene, authorities said. William Lowther remained held Monday at the Essex County jail. He was also charged with criminal mischief, said Katherine Carter, spokeswoman for the Essex County Prosecutor's Office. Lowther is the father of 10-year-old Josiah Coleman, who died early Saturday in the shooting at a home on the 800 block of South 19th Street. An 11-year-old was holding a gun when it fired, killing Josiah, according to Newark Mayor Ras Baraka. Authorities have not revealed how the 11-year-old gained access to the gun. "We can't discuss right now who owned the gun and whether it was owned legally," Carter said. "That's part of the investigation." Josiah had recently moved to Pennsylvania but was visiting his father in Newark on Friday night in advance of a birthday party planned for Saturday evening for Josiah's sister, family members said. Outside the house on Monday, Josiah's maternal grandfather, his paternal grandmother and an aunt recalled the 10-year-old as a loving child, filled with life, who smiled frequently. His passions included basketball, his fifth-grade studies, and gaming. "He loved video games, he played video games all day," his grandfather Clarence Jamaal Coleman said. "And school." Coleman said his daughter and Lowther were never married, and that Josiah used his mother's last name, not his father's. Lowther lives in a third-floor apartment above his mother's residence, the family said. His mother and Josiah's aunt declined to provide their names while speaking with NJ Advance Media. Josiah's family said Lowther's girlfriend and her son were visiting the home. Lowther's mother said she was asleep when the shooting occurred around 1:20 AM. She and the other family members did not know what happened or why the two boys were up at that hour. They said Lowther's girlfriend was up with the boys. Lowther's girlfriend was also outside the house briefly on Monday, though she did not elaborate on what happened the night of the shooting, except to say that her son would never hurt anyone. She did not give her name. Carter, the spokeswoman for the prosecutor's office, declined to comment on the 11-year-old's relationship to Josiah. She also declined to say whether additional charges could be filed against Lowther. "All I can say is the investigation is ongoing," Carter said. "We can't say we're looking at a particular person for a particular thing until we're ready to charge them." The prosecutor's office had issued a statement on Sunday saying the 10-year-old victim was accidentally shot inside the home by another juvenile.

'Hero' stopped mass murder by crazed bar patron
who was armed to the teeth, police say

A concealed carry holder is being heralded as a hero by Arlington police for preventing mass murder by killing an "incoherent" gunman at a sports bar Wednesday evening.

Before he was shot about 6:15 p.m., the gunman killed the manager of Zona Caliente in the 6500 block of South Cooper Street, police spokesman Christopher Cook said.

Police later identified the gunman as 48-year-old James Jones of Grand Prairie and the victim as 37-year-old Cesar Perez of Duncanville. The man who killed Jones has not been identified.

Authorities later found two loaded guns and two knives on Jones, Cook said Thursday.

"We do believe he had the capacity to do much greater harm," Cook said.

When Jones entered the business, some witnesses told police, he started yelling incoherently while standing at the bar.

"People didn't know who he was yelling at," Cook said.

Perez was trying to talk to Jones when he was fatally shot. Police do not believe they knew each other.

That's when a customer fired his gun at Jones.

"After he was struck once, the suspect started shooting at the front door," Cook told the Arlington Voice. "We know people were trying to escape, but we're not sure if he was just trying to harm others."

More than a dozen customers and a handful of employees were in the sports bar at the time of the shooting.

Cook said the customer, who was dining with his wife, "prevented further loss of life."

The customer was carrying a handgun under the Texas concealed handgun license program, Cook later confirmed.

"We're treating the good guy as sort of a hero," he said.

One other person was hurt, though it wasn't clear if it was a restaurant customer or employee. Police said that person was injured by glass while trying to get out.

So I'm currently living in NJ and take the train to work. The other day a couple of young black males decided that it would be funny to start yelling that they had a gun. People started freaking out, but I'm just sitting in my seat watching this play out. Long story short, the end up getting off the train after the cops were called. Had I still been living in the south, rather than NJ, this story would've played out much differently. Meaning these punks wouldn't have made it off the train.

Wow what a great testament to responsible gun ownership. If you had been in south you could have murdered a couple teenagers for simply saying they had a gun and because they were black.
