Study of past warming signals major sea level rise ahead

    AFP on January 20, 2017, 9:13 am

Miami (AFP) - Scientists who study patterns of natural shifts in the Earth's climate said Thursday they have uncovered a "worrisome" signal that major sea level rise could be on the way.

The findings in the journal Science show that ocean surface temperatures during the Earth's last warm period, some 125,000 years ago, were remarkably similar to today.

But what concerns scientists is that sea level back then was 20-30 feet (six to nine meters) above what it is today.

"The trend is worrisome," said the report led by researchers at Oregon State University, University College Dublin, the University of Wisconsin and the Science Museum of Virginia.

"Collectively, these results may help scientists better understand how oceans will respond to modern warming."

Our planet goes through periods of warm and cold that last tens of thousands of years, and are influenced by changes in Sun exposure caused by natural variations in the Earth's orbit, combined with the influence of greenhouse gases in the atmosphere.

These naturally occurring shifts are different than the much faster pace of warming facing the Earth today, as humans burn fossil fuels for energy and send heat-trapping carbon emissions into the air, leading to ice melt and sea level rise.

The last time the climate was unusually warm -- in the absence of human influence -- was about between 116,000 and 129,000 years ago, during what is known as the Last Interglacial Period.

It was one of the warmest periods in the last 800,000 years, according to the report.

    - 'Humanity's rapid impact' -

The basis for the study was an analysis of 83 marine sediment core sites, which can give clues to how warm the Earth and oceans were in the past.

Each core site was compared to data sets from 1870-1889 and 1995-2014, respectively.

The analysis showed that 129,000 years ago, the global ocean surface temperature "was already similar to the 1870-1889 average."

The temperature rose over the next 4,000 years, "reaching a temperature indistinguishable from the 1995-2014 average."

The finding means that some scientific models that have been used to estimate sea levels at various temperatures could have been underestimates.

Scientists have already predicted the Earth is likely to see multiple meters of sea level rise in the years to come, a development that will swallow many of the planet's coastal communities, currently home to one billion people.

No one knows how fast the seas may rise in the decades to come, but some experts say the latest study is cause for alarm.

"The result that present global sea surface temperatures are indistinguishable from those at the last interglacial 125,000 years ago is extremely worrying since sea levels were six to nine meters higher then compared to preseAF," (think about this. It raises some interesting questions) said Richard Allan, professor of climate science at the University of Reading, who was not involved in the study.
    #
Allan said it could be thousands of years before modern sea levels catch up, and that cuts in fossil fuel use could still help.
    #
    >
"Due to the length of time it takes to heat up the depths of our vast oceans and to melt giant ice sheets it would take thousands of years before sea level could potentially rise to such levels<
, so sustained and substantive cuts in greenhouse gas emissions from energy-intensive activities remain vital and beneficial to societies."

Meric Srokosz, a marine physics and ocean climate scientist at the University of Southampton, said the study is significant because it shows that changes in temperatures which occurred over thousands of years, are now occurring in the space of a single century.

"This demonstrates humanity's rapid impact on the planet and raises the possibility of significant longer-term rises in sea level," added Srokosz.

Andrew Watson, a professor at the University of Exeter, said the study's takeaways are both good and bad.

"The study suggests that in the long term, sea level will rise six meters at least in response to the warming we are causing," he said.

"The good news is that with luck it will continue to rise slowly, so that we have time to adapt, but the bad news is that eventually all our present coastal city locations will be inundated."

    AF

a simple summary that makes for some possible rethinking ,
but let's see if anyone else see's what I do.

But........But........I thought it was MAN MADE climate change.
So how did it warm up 125000 years ago? Caveman flatuence?

so did you miss some of the above ?
like around about paragraph 7 for example

      note: I'm sceptical to
the climate has been warming and cooling for ever
there's something curious about the above summary though
but I guess you missed it

The last big "core study" on global warming also was a cause for alarm.

Remember the "Greenland Ice Core" studies?

    Completely 100% debunked. Trash science.

    This is bullshit, too.

    1. BigSuzyB
I thought the Greenland ice core studies showed that there was significant co2 present on many occasions throughout history? The study was well done, it just didn't show that the conditions we are seeing now are extraordinary. That doesn't mean life may not get tough again.

White House climate change webpage disappears after Trump's inauguration

Less than an hour after President Trump took the oath of office on Friday, the White House’s webpage on climate change disappeared, the latest sign that the new administration will divert resources – and attention – from the issue.

The removal of the page from the White House’s website came around the same time the site and other Executive Branch digital platforms were overhauled to reflect the new administration.

I did discuss it. I said it is bullshit.

Last week the US Congressional establishment compelled the NAS to compel the NOAA to report that 2016 was the warmest year ever.

Except that records have only been kept for 173 years.

And except that we've only had comprehensive satellite coverage of global temperatures since the 1980's.

And except that it was only the warmest year by 0.04%. (Four tenths of one percent.)

Which is a tiny fraction of the margin of error.

And except that the past three years of "warmest on record" pronouncements were also within tiny fractions of the margin of error.

And except that all three years were El Nino years.

Now, what exactly is there to discuss? Besides bullshit?

President Donald Trump has hit the ground running...

Trump administration takes aim at climate regs, sets agenda on WhiteHouse.gov

While new President Donald Trump was laying out a short version of his agenda in an inaugural speech, his communications team was busy rewriting the White House website with a slew of new objectives including scrapping environmental regulations it claims kill jobs.

Among the commitments was immediate elimination of the Climate Action Plan and the Waters of the U.S. rule, two administrative regulations Trump’s predecessor, President Obama, considered environmental safeguards. Team Trump deemed them “harmful and unnecessary policies” that hurt the economy and said so on the official Whitehouse.gov website.

“Lifting these restrictions will greatly help American workers, increasing wages by more than $30 billion over the next 7 years,” the website now states.

Trump made clear his administration will seek energy independence for the U.S. by giving a shot in the arm to the oil and gas industries, a platform plank he touted during his successful campaign against Democrat Hillary Clinton.

“We must take advantage of the estimated $50 trillion in untapped shale, oil, and natural gas reserves, especially those on federal lands that the American people own,” the freshly updated site now states. “We will use the revenues from energy production to rebuild our roads, schools, bridges and public infrastructure.”

The rapid reversal of prior policy drew a sharp rebuke from environmentalists.

"Minutes after he was sworn in, any illusion that Trump would act in the best interests of families in this country as President were wiped away by a statement of priorities that constitute an historic mistake on one of the key crises facing our planet and an assault on public health,” Sierra Club Executive Director Michael Brune said in a statement. “What Trump has released is hardly a plan - it’s a polluter wishlist that will make our air and water dirtier, our climate and international relations more unstable, and our kids sicker. This is a shameful and dark start to Trump’s Presidency, and a slap in the face to any American who thought Trump might pursue the national interest.”

Elsewhere on the official site’s “Issues” section, the new administration spelled out other top priorities, wasting no time in sending a message it plans to aggressively implement the new agenda.

    • On defense, the site vows to “rebuild” the military to give America firmer footing in pursuing “peace through strength.”
    • On trade, the Trump administration intends to withdraw from the Trans-Pacific Partnership and renegotiate the North American Free Trade Agreement.
    • The site proposes a moratorium on new federal regulations and states that Trump will order the heads of federal agencies and departments “to identify job-killing regulations that should be repealed.”
    • On crime, the new policies include plans to deport illegal immigrants with violent criminal records and to safeguard Second Amendment rights, which Trump believes allow Americans to ensure their own safety.
Much of the updated information simply makes official Trump’s campaign promises, but the speed with which they were posted on the site could send a signal to critics and supporters alike that Trump intends to follow through on his agenda.

The nuttiest aspect of the Obama climate, agenda was that he tried his damndest to rope us into binding "global treaties." And he was also doing everything in his power to unilaterally kill our fossil fuel industry.

Yet the United States is the ONLY industrialized nation that has met its carbon elimination objectives, and we did it almost entirely by converting to fracked natural gas.

And the enviro-Nazis are trying to kill fracking.

It's impossible to make sense of the looney left mind.

The analysis showed that 129,000 years ago, the global ocean surface temperature "was already similar to the 1870-1889 average."

So we've been in the same temperature range as the hottest time (in 800,000yrs) 116 to 129,000 years ago , for at LEAST over 140 years ,
    But,
our sea level is still 20 - 30 feet lower.
    Then

Allan said it could be thousands of years before modern sea levels catch up, and that cuts in fossil fuel use could still help.
Due to the length of time it takes to heat up the depths of our vast oceans and to melt giant ice sheets it would take thousands of years before sea level could potentially rise to such levels

So it could take "thousands" of years
Wow , look at the known variations in sea levels over the last couple of thousand years.
Ruins under water , old roman harbours high n dry , so many examples.

So all we have is an endless list of
"could be" , "could have" and "possible" ,
    over thousands of years ,
based on miniscule variations of unknown accuracy.

I've said for a long time , ask me in a hundred years , and I may have an opinion on what will happen.
Seems I was probably rather optimistic ,
    make that 1,000 years :)

It is hard not to conclude that our information , such as it is ,
can only be described as totally inadequate , and quite possibly , substantially wrong.

None of this is to say we should ignore everything and not work to improve ,
but surely silly scare tactic predictions are only counter productive.
What were things like 100 years ago ?
What will they be in 100 years from now ?

Hell your country with all the earthquake faults will probably break up and

      lmao , true ,
though fortunately we're on the right side of the line , the uplift side , so we seem to gain land from earthquakes , rather than loose it.
Maybe they'll keep uplifting us ahead of the sea level rise :)

      In 500 years ,
Hell , who knows where humanity will be by then.

Now where were we 500 years ago , oh that's right , coming out of the dark ages cooling period.

What was really a kick in the face was the Obama administration refusal to call out China for their lack of compliance with regards to all those climate treaties they signed and never intended to implement or enforce. Beijing is so polluted you can't see 10 feet ahead of yourself while walking down the street. Do you think the rest of the country in any cleaner? This man made climate change nonsense is nothing more that a tool for enemies of the US to attack our economy. China did all of this knowing how it would cripple the US economy.

It's time to put a match to the paper Tiger....

    It's amazing.
Repeatedly , thread after thread , people try to make things political , about Obama , Trump , the Us and so on.
They're bit players for a blink in time , inconsequential hiccups in the long term scheme of things
History will record good or bad , maybe , or forget them.

How many US presidents since climate became a topic of issue ?

and what are they remembered for ?

What will they be remembered for in 1,000 years ?
    or even 100 ?

    Weather runs the gamut. Everywhere.

The fact we know about local anomalies does not mean they have never happened or are even uncommon. All it means is that the Internet has made the world smaller and more accessible.

      All very true of course.
It was just amazing pictures on our morning news.

Interestingly , we are in mid summer , and one top winter ski field that has a summer holiday program for kids , is this weekend snowed in , with the heaviest summer snowfall ever recorded.
Trouble is , no one took any winter cloths :)

Just like the Sahara , it is not unheard if to have summer snow , just that there is so much.
