Dem to unveil bill requiring a White House psychiatrist

Rep. Ted Lieu (D-Calif.) reportedly plans to file a bill that would require the White House to have an in-house psychiatrist.

“I’m looking at it from the perspective of, if there are questions about the mental health of the president of the United States, what may be the best way to get the president treatment?” Lieu told the Huffington Post.

“We’re now in the 21st century. Mental health is just as important as physical health,” he added.

The Democratic lawmaker reportedly plans to introduce the bill as early as next week.

Lieu has previously raised concerns with President Trump's mental health, suggesting that the commander in chief could use a mental health evaluation.

"Last 24 hrs on Twitter, Donald Trump went on rant about 'death & destruction,' 'FAKE NEWS,' & 'evil.' Should he get mental health exam?" Lieu tweeted over the weekend.

During his interview with the Huffington Post, the lawmaker said that “it is not normal" for the president to tweet about all of these topics within 24 hours. He also maintained that Trump is divorced from the facts of reality.

“His disconnection from the truth is incredibly disturbing. ... When you add on top of that his stifling of dissent, his attacks on the free press and his attacks on the legitimacy of judiciary, that then takes us down the road toward authoritarianism. That’s why I’ve concluded he is a danger to the republic,” Lieu argued.

Leaks Suggest Trump’s Own Team Is Alarmed By His Conduct
White House leaks are common, but leakers suggesting the president might be unfit for office are not.

WASHINGTON – President Donald Trump was confused about the dollar: Was it a strong one that’s good for the economy? Or a weak one?

So he made a call ― except not to any of the business leaders Trump brought into his administration or even to an old friend from his days in real estate. Instead, he called his national security adviser, retired Lt. Gen. Mike Flynn, according to two sources familiar with Flynn’s accounts of the incident.

Flynn has a long record in counterintelligence but not in macroeconomics. And he told Trump he didn’t know, that it wasn’t his area of expertise, that, perhaps, Trump should ask an economist instead.

Trump was not thrilled with that response ― but that may have been a function of the time of day. Trump had placed the call at 3 a.m., according to one of Flynn’s retellings ― although neither the White House nor Flynn’s office responded to requests for confirmation about that detail.

For Americans who based their impression of Trump on the competent and decisive tycoon he portrayed on his “Apprentice” TV reality shows, the portrait from these and many other tidbits emerging from his administration may seem a shock: an impulsive, sometimes petty chief executive more concerned with the adulation of the nation than the details of his own policies ― and quick to assign blame when things do not go his way.

Unsurprisingly, Trump’s volatile behavior has created an environment ripe for leaks from his executive agencies and even within his White House. And while leaks typically involve staffers sabotaging each other to improve their own standing or trying to scuttle policy ideas they find genuinely problematic, Trump’s 2-week-old administration has a third category: leaks from White House and agency officials alarmed by the president’s conduct.

“I’ve been in this town for 26 years. I have never seen anything like this,” said Eliot Cohen, a senior State Department official under President George W. Bush and a member of his National Security Council. “I genuinely do not think this is a mentally healthy president.”

There is the matter of Trump’s briefing materials, for example. The commander in chief doesn’t like to read long memos, a White House aide who asked to remain unnamed told The Huffington Post. So preferably they must be no more than a single page. They must have bullet points but not more than nine per page.

Small things can provide him great joy or generate intense irritation. Trump told The New York Times that he’s fascinated with the phone system inside the White House. At the same time, he’s registered a complaint about the hand towels aboard Air Force One, the White House aide said, because they are not soft enough.

He’s been particularly obsessed with the performance of his aides on cable television. Past presidents typically didn’t make time to watch their press secretary’s daily briefings with reporters, but Trump appears to have made it part of his routine. “Saturday Night Live’s” weekly skewering of his administration is similarly on his must-watch list ― with his reaction ranging from unamused to seething.

Information about Trump’s personal interactions and the inner workings of his administration has come to HuffPost from individuals in executive agencies and in the White House itself. They spoke on condition of anonymity for fear of losing their jobs.

While some of the leaks are based on opposition to his policies – the travel ban on all refugees and on visitors from seven predominantly Muslim nations, for instance – many appear motivated by a belief that Trump’s words, deeds and tweets pose a genuine threat.

When Trump tweeted about North Korea’s missile technology three weeks before he took office, for example, it scrambled then-President Barack Obama’s national security apparatus, which saw a risk in provoking an unstable young dictator who possessed nuclear weapons.

Richard Nephew, a State Department expert on Iran sanctions under Obama, said some of the leaks from the agencies are likely efforts to let the public know that their advice has not been followed, in the event something bad happens down the road. “This, I think, is about making it clear that these folks have tried to do the right thing and there is only so much they can do with a hostile administration,” Nephew said.

Perhaps along those lines, The Associated Press reported the details of a phone call Jan. 27 between Trump and Mexican President Enrique Peña Nieto, noting that Trump said Mexico had “bad hombres” and that he might need to send U.S. troops to take care of things. (The White House later said Trump had been joking around.) The Washington Post detailed a Jan. 28 conversation between Trump and Australian Prime Minister Malcolm Turnbull in which Trump angrily denounced an agreement to resettle refugees held by Australia in the United States.

The New York Times, meanwhile, painted a portrait of a brooding commander in chief, wandering the White House alone in a bathrobe at night, watching too much cable television and venting his frustrations through angry tweets.

“I think it’s a cry for help,” said Elizabeth Rosenberg, a counterterrorism expert at the Treasury Department under Obama. She said many staffers still working in the national security agencies under Trump see what’s happening and are driven by a simple motive: “Incredulity, and the need to share it.”

The White House has denied many of these accounts, including the idea that Trump owns (let alone wears) a bathrobe. Others dispute the premise that Trump staffers undermining his competence is unusual. Ron Kaufman, who worked in George H.W. Bush’s White House in the late 1980s and early 1990s, argued that the Trump administration’s leaks are par for the course for a young administration. “There’s always leaks,” Kaufman said. “Every president in history has said the press hates me and there’s too many leaks.”

And Republican National Committee member Randy Evans, a veteran of Newt Gingrich’s leak-prone House speaker’s suite in the 1990s, said he doesn’t “get that sense” that Trump’s staffers are questioning his fitness for the job.

“Not yet, anyway,” Evans said. “We’re just too early in the process…. I think you see a lot of political jockeying going on and a lot of self-importance going on.”

The idea that Trump is temperamentally ill-suited for the presidency is nothing new. It was the main argument against him during both the GOP primaries a year ago and the general election last summer and fall. At times, Trump seemed to embrace the characterization, wearing it as a badge of honor for his status as an anti-establishment “outsider.”

But what were only hypothetical concerns on the campaign trail are now life-and-death decisions inside the White House – as evidenced by the death of a Navy commando in a botched raid in Yemen on Jan. 29. Trump approved that raid following a dinner meeting that included his top political adviser, former Breitbart News Chairman Stephen Bannon, whose permanent membership in the National Security Council was itself the basis of widespread leaks and warnings from the national security establishment.

“The intelligence community is desperately looking for a way to get some leverage in altering dangerous policies away from a catastrophic vector,” said Rick Wilson, a former Pentagon official familiar with intelligence issues who has become a vocal Trump critic.

Evans said at some point the White House will have to get serious about harmful leaks if they want to control their message, just as Gingrich’s office had to two decades ago. He described the method of intentionally releasing tidbits to various staffers to see what turned up in print. “If the administration gets serious about leaks, they’ll do the blue-dye test and find them,” Evans said.

But to Cohen, who now teaches at Johns Hopkins University’s School of Advanced International Studies, the problem is not the leakers. It’s the president. Because Trump has shown no true affection or respect for anyone outside his immediate family, Cohen said, he cannot expect that of his staff. “This is what happens when you have a narcissist as president.”

You make a fair couple points.

To be honest my original post was more jocular in nature, although with some truth at its heart; you would think he is rich enough to afford a good shrink and to have his meds balanced.

But at the same time his actions just don't seem to support my hypothesis.

Donald Trump is not psychotic.

I think of a neurotic as one who is irrationally afraid and depressed. Trump does not seem to be that way either.

I see Trump as a spoiled man-child who has had it easy all of his life, and who has not learned that the world does not revolve around him.

Trump has been promoted to his level of incompetence and will spend his presidency demonstrating the Peter Principle.

A business executive can ruin his department with a single bad management decision. Trump is likely to make many bad management decisions. Unfortunately, the American people will suffer, including those of us who voted against him.

Here's what I think is the most important thing to consider. Why does Trump continue to tell the same lies over and over and over again in the face of overwhelming evidence that he is lying. Such as the latest examples from today and yesterday. "The murder rate has increased 47%." and his Supreme Court nominee did not say Trump's criticism of judges was "demoralizing" and "disheartening." Both of those are just easily provable lies yet Trump continues to insist they are true. Why?

And the only reason I can think of is Trump is so mentally ill he cannot tell the difference between his delusions and reality.

Donald Trump demonstrates why businessmen seldom make good political leaders. The environment within a corporation is feudal. Businessmen can give orders and expect obedience. They do not need to make people want to do what they want them to do. They are used to being surrounded by sycophants who tell them things like, "That's a great idea boss. Let's do it," and "Ha Ha Boss. That is a funny joke."

Businessmen are used to be criticized by people above them in the hierarchy of their companies. They consider criticism from below as impertinent.

In Trump's case they really are out to get him. The New York Times and The Washington Post brought Nixon down after he was reelected in a landslide in 1972. Trump lost the popular vote to Hillary.

The editors, editorial writers, columnists, and reporters for The New York Times and The Washington Post hate Trump. They are waiting for the opportunity to destroy the Trump administration.

I am watching Trump in a press conference with Japan's prime minister Shinzō Abe right now and he sure isn't looking too good. He appears exhausted. He's babbling. And it sure looks like to me he doesn't even realize when Shinzo is painting him into a corner on a range of issues. In fact at this moment Trump's been asked a question about his phone call with China and he's pretty much contradicting what Shinzo and he said just a few moments before.

OMG!!! Now Trump is rambling and babbling and making no sense at all.

And notice now Trump has to run off to Florida again for the second weekend in a row.

Why President Trump’s Misleading Image of American Crime Matters
In talks with law enforcement officials this week, President Donald Trump offered a misleading view on American crime and police safety that experts say ignored — and could hurt — decades of progress in reducing crime.

The president's description of an increasingly dangerous America feeds into his campaign narrative that the nation simply needs more "law and order" to be safer. He's argued that police are being mistreated amid a national debate about racial policing after groups like the Black Lives Matter movement demanded police reforms amid a slew of police killings of unarmed black men and women.

Swearing in his top law enforcement official on Thursday morning, Trump said it marked "a new era of justice," while his new Attorney General, Sen. Jeff Sessions vowed to tackle "a dangerous permanent trend that has placed the health and safety of the American people at risk.''

But this picture of America doesn't fit the facts

Trump said Tuesday at the White House that the nation's murder rate is "the highest it's been in 47 years."

It's not. The murder rate ticked up in 2015, but it's still near historic lows, having fallen by half since its most recent peak in 1991.

"The number of officers shot and killed in the law of duty increased by 56% from the year before," Trump said at a meeting on Wednesday, citing deadly execution-style killings of police officers in Dallas and New York last year.

That statistic, from a December report by the National Law Enforcement Officers Memorial Fund, signals a shift in the way officers are being killed — with guns — from the previous year, which had a remarkably low number of shooting deaths compared to years past. The actual increase in officer deaths in the line of duty from year to year is far less at 10 percent.

A wider lens look at the crime data he's citing also paints a different picture: It's safer to be a police officer today than it was in 2001 when 241 officers lost their lives in the line of duty, or in 2011 when 177 officers were killed. In 2016, 135 officers were killed in the line of duty. The conservative American Enterprise Institute crunched the numbers and found that gun deaths, when compared against population, makes 2015 the second safest year in history for police.

"The danger is, as you continue to create this dark view of society," John Jay College of Criminal Justice professor Dennis Jay Kenney said, "it becomes a self-fulfilling prophecy."

Kenney, who was a police officer in the 1970s, said Trump's misleading view on crime and safety is dangerous because it's more likely to inflate community and police officers' fears rather than sooth them, which helps to create rifts between the two groups.

"The relationship between the police and community is the single most determinate of police effectiveness," he said, noting that community-based policing and better integration is what drove crime down to its historic low levels in recent years. Trump and Session's rhetoric — simply getting tougher on crime — won't stop crime, he said.

Fordham Law Professor John Pfaff, who teaches criminal law, said Trump misses important context by focusing on large year-over increases instead of historic trends.

"Murders in 2015 experienced their largest single year increase in nearly a half a century," Trump said Wednesday, speaking to gathered law enforcement officials.

That's because the American homicide rate is near its lowest point in history after being cut in half from its early peak in the 1990's, Pfaff said.

"We're a victim of our own success. If you have a hundred homicides and you add ten more, that's 10% more. If you have ten homicides, and you add ten more, it's a 100% increases," he said.

Violent crimes were up 3.9% in 2015, to 1.19 million, but that was still down down dramatically from 1.9 million in 1993.

Pfaff also said FBI crime data, which depends on police reporting to be accurate and for victims to report violent crimes to police, isn't a perfect picture — so he'll look at another imperfect measure of crime, the National Crime Victimization Survey, which shows crime dropping even more.

Pfaff said the statistics Trump is citing are notable and important — "we don't want to ignore that, we want to pay attention" — but noted that they are most valuable in historical context.

"You never want to extrapolate from one bad year. That's leads to bad policy," he said.

en. Al Franken appeared on Friday’s Real Time with Bill Maher and said that opinions of the new president among Republican senators vary. Some say, he said, that he’s “not right, mentally.”

“And then, some are harsher,” he said. “I haven’t heard a lot of good things and I’ve heard great concern about his temperament.”

“I saw this today,” Maher said. “Fifty-one percent of Trump voters believe he should be able to personally overturn decisions by judges.”

“That didn’t surprise me,” Franken replied, then pointed out that half of Trump voters is fewer than a quarter of the people in the country and, “I guess that 48 or 49 percent of Trump voters understood [the federal judiciary is independent] and that’s good.”

“Washington has really made you an optimist, Al,” Maher said.

They have the majority and we can’t stop them from having hearings and we’re going to have hearings,” Franken explained. “Now, what I’m saying is that the Roberts court has been a pro-activist, pro-corporate, pro-pollution, pro-big money in campaigns and in elections and I’m not going to okay another 5-4 Roberts court.”

Maher brought up that Time magazine is already calling for Trump’s impeachment over violations of the emoluments clause, not to mention the president’s “mental problem.”

“Al, when will the impeachment hearings start?” Maher asked.

“Let me remind you again that the Republicans are in the majority,” Franken said, “so it’s months and months away.”

“I know everybody wants a quick fix on this,” he said, “but this is going to be a bit of a marathon.”

However, he said that the last week has been incredible. “People are showing up for town halls” by the hundreds, he said. “There’s a tremendous amount of energy around the country.”

He urged people to stay involved.

“It works, we got hundreds of thousands of calls about Betsy DeVos at the Senate and that makes a difference,” he said. “She is on notice, now, and she’s not going to be able to do a lot of the things that I think she wanted to do because of that. What you people do makes a huge difference.”
