  2. Hello,

You can now get verified on forum.

The way it's gonna work is that you can send me a PM with a verification picture. The picture has to contain you and forum name on piece of paper or on your body and your username or my username instead of the website name, if you prefer that.

I need to be able to recognize you in that picture. You need to have some pictures of your self in your gallery so I can compare that picture.

Please note that verification is completely optional and it won't give you any extra features or access. You will have a check mark (as I have now, if you want to look) and verification will only mean that you are who you say you are.

You may not use a fake pictures for verification. If you try to verify your account with a fake picture or someone else picture, or just spam me with fake pictures, you will get Banned!

The pictures that you will send me for verification won't be public

Yesterday's video was surely inspired by this one, released several years before. As we move into the weekend this is a fun tune with an even funnier video:

I love the "1812 Overture". It was written in 1880 by Pyotr Ilych Tchaikovsky, to commemorate the defense of Russia against Napoleon's invading Grand Armée in 1812. The music can be interpreted as a literal depiction of the course of the campaign, and reading about the interpretation is very fascinating. You can tell that there is a definite story being told through the music.

SL, may I make a suggestion for a thread? You appear to like classical music and everyone has pieces they like but can't put a name to. Perhaps it would be a good idea to start a thread featuring the most popular but unnameable classics.

That is such a good idea. If you do so @SilverLycan please don't stop contributing to this thread because I love the fact that you are adding some fabulous pieces of music to this one, but I'd like a 'Classical' thread - I'd even occasionally add one or two of my own (despite my somewhat limited knowledge of classical music).

      A quick factoid:

"There are some interesting stories to be told about some of the earliest recordings made of 1812, at a time when recording technology was in its infancy.

At one Decca recording in London, the cannon fire was emulated by exploding theatrical munitions in a dust bin at the rear of the hall. The police promptly arrived, worrying that a safe was being blown; they then stayed to watch the rest of the recording process with some interest.

Another early recording, this one in the U.S., used rifle fire in place of cannons. The sound was recorded at low speed and then sped up in the mastering process, and the result is nearly indistinguishable from the real thing
      ."

To come back to the original post, back in the 70s when I was at uni, I took a great interest in "Candide" by Voltaire and, during one of our tutorials, the tutor pointed out that one passage was extremely disturbing, the one about guns and cannon firing. I argued that it was actually quite musical but had to give way when it was pointed out that it was pre-"1812 ".

Following @SilverLycan 's 1812 Overture, another piece of music scored with cannons, this one released a century later:

This one goes even further: it has an atom bomb at the end.

So we've got cannons, and atomic bombs. Clearly the next step is to incorporate the sound of a hyper giant star going HYPERNOVA. Music that is of such length and volume it could only be safely listened from the void between galaxies. Oh hell, lets turn the entire universe into a giant speaker, and escape to another universe and listen to it there.

How about a, um, eh, a salute to the overture?

Bugs Bunny was my favorite cartoon character in the 70's. (Probably still is, now that I think about it.)

While we're talking 'Overtures' here's a band who do them awfully well, a favourite of @umpire2 also if I'm not mistaken.

And if we're talking "Overture" why not "Underture"? This is from "Tommy" but the main theme came from "Rael" on that brilliant album "The Who Sell Out".

Great song in a place I know well. I used to live near Nîmes and have visited the Arena many times. By the way, how many know that the word "denim" actually comes from the French "de Nîmes" (from Nîmes)?

Fantastic track - how did a six-minute song make it to the top of the charts? There aren't many others - O Superman & Bohemian Rhapsody excluded of course.

Dear Jayney, seeing your Sky - Tocatta post on the Classical thread made me think of this great track. Can you believe that the composer - Herbie Flowers, the bass guitarist - also wrote that awful "Grandad" for Clive Dunn? This one is pure magic.

I didn't know a great deal about Herbie Flowers, apart from seeing his name connected with such artists as Sky, David Bowie, Elton John, Lou Reed and a few others. I certainly didn't know about 'Grandad' - that would be one for your Songs that make you want to vomit thread! :D
