I'd love to comment on my team, but being a baseball fan I tend to be a bit superstitious and don't want to jinx them.

Atlanta Braves outfielder Hector Olivera was placed on paid administrative leave by Major League Baseball after he was arrested and charged with assaulting a woman at a hotel outside Washington.

The Braves said in a statement Wednesday the team is "extremely disappointed and troubled."

Officers were called earlier Wednesday to the Ritz-Carlton Hotel in Pentagon City, where a woman with visible bruises reported that Olivera had assaulted her, Arlington Police spokeswoman Ashley Savage said.

In a news release Wednesday, police said Olivera was charged with assault and battery, a misdemeanour, and bond was set at $10,000 US.

Savage said Olivera and the woman are acquainted.

The Atlanta team is in Washington for a series against the Nationals.

The 31-year-old Olivera defected from Cuba and agreed to a $62.5 million US, six-year contract with the Los Angeles Dodgers last May and was traded to Atlanta on July 30.

Olivera will continue to receive his $4 million US salary while on leave. He may ask baseball's independent arbitrator, Fredric Horowitz, to reinstate him to the active roster pending MLB's investigation. If a request is made, a live or telephone hearing is to be held within 24 hours of the request.

Atlanta placed Olivera on the restricted list. To fill his roster spot, the Braves recalled infielder Daniel Castro from Triple-A Gwinnett.

Olivera is the fourth player whose conduct came under baseball's new domestic abuse policy, a deal the players' association agreed to last summer.

Yankees pitcher Aroldis Chapman is serving a 30-day suspension after an incident with his girlfriend last October, and Dodgers outfielder Yasiel Puig was not disciplined for events at a Miami bar.

Colorado shortstop Jose Reyes is on paid administrative leave pending a decision on whether MLB will discipline him for an incident with his wife at a Maui hotel in Hawaii on Oct. 31. Reyes was arrested, and a domestic abuse charge was dismissed this week after prosecutors said Reyes' wife did not co-operate. Prosecutors have two years to refile.

New York Yankees closer Aroldis Chapman agreed to accept a 30-game suspension under Major League Baseball's domestic violence policy, a penalty stemming from an incident with his girlfriend last October.

Under the discipline announced Tuesday, Chapman will serve the penalty from the start of the season in April. He will lose 30 days of pay — $1,856,557 of his $11,325,000 US salary — and 30 days of major league service, which will allow him to reach six years of service time after this season, enough to become eligible for free agency.

"I found Mr. Chapman's acknowledged conduct on that day to be inappropriate ... particularly his use of a firearm and the impact of that behavior on his partner," baseball commissioner Rob Manfred said in a statement. "I am gratified that Mr. Chapman has taken responsibility for his conduct."

Chapman became the first player penalized a finite number of games under the policy, which MLB and the players' association agreed to in August following several high-profile incidents among NFL players.

So Chapman will miss 15 #Yankees games against AL East opponents, including six against the #RedSox.

    @KenDavidoff
Baseball's investigation of Chapman stemmed from Oct. 30. Chapman's girlfriend, 22-year-old Cristina Barnea, told police he pushed and choked her. Chapman said there was an argument but that he was pushed down by Barnea's brother, eventually getting a handgun and firing eight shots into a wall and window while locked in his garage.

Chapman, the hardest-throwing pitcher in the major leagues, was traded from payroll-paring Cincinnati Reds to the Yankees in December. He had said he would contest any suspension, but a deal was reached following negotiations with MLB.

"I want to be clear, I did not in any way harm my girlfriend that evening," Chapman said in a statement. "However, I should have exercised better judgment with respect to certain actions, and for that I am sorry. The decision to accept a suspension, as opposed to appealing one, was made after careful consideration. I made this decision in an effort to minimize the distractions that an appeal would cause the Yankees, my new teammates and most importantly, my family."

The players' association said it supported Chapman's decision to accept the penalty and said "its members do not condone the mistreatment of others by playing or non-playing personnel."

Chapman can continue to participate in all spring training activities. The penalty starts when the Yankees open the season April 4 at home against Houston. Barring rainouts, he would eligible to start his season May 9 when the Yankees host Kansas City.

Colorado Rockies shortstop and former Toronto Blue Jay Jose Reyes is scheduled to go to trial April 4, the day the Rockies open the regular season at Arizona. On Oct. 31, Reyes was arrested for allegedly assaulting his wife in their hotel room in Wailea, Hawaii.

Maui prosecutors are moving to dismiss a domestic abuse charge against suspended Colorado Rockies shortstop Jose Reyes because his wife isn't co-operating.

Deputy prosecuting attorney Kerry Glen said she expects to file documents Wednesday to drop the case. Reyes' wife won't talk to prosecutors or return to Maui, she said.

"The complaining witness, Mr. Reyes' wife, is what we call an uncooperative witness," Glen said. "At this point, I have no other avenue for prosecution."

Reyes was scheduled to go to trial April 4. He pleaded not guilty to abusing a family or household member. David Sereno, his Maui defense attorney, couldn't immediately be reached for comment.

The former Toronto Blue Jays shortstop was arrested Oct. 31 at the Wailea Four Seasons Resort. According to a recording of a 911 call released by police, a hotel security guard reported the woman had injuries to her leg and scratches on her neck.

    $1,000 US bail
Reyes was released after posting $1,000 US bail and was ordered to stay away from his wife for three days.

Reyes' wife rebuffed requests for co-operation through a Maui attorney she hired, Glen said.

Glen will ask for the case to be dropped without prejudice, meaning she'll have about two years from the date of the alleged offence to refile charges if Reyes' wife eventually co-operates.

"For misdemeanor offences, we cannot force an uncooperative witness to come back," Glen said.

Reyes was placed on paid leave under Major League Baseball's new domestic violence policy pending completion of the criminal proceedings.

Reyes 'remains on administrative leave,' says MLB
The MLB declined to comment on prosecutors' intent to drop the charge against him but said in a statement Reyes "remains on administrative leave until the commissioner completes his investigation and imposes any discipline."

Administrative leave is paid suspension, although Reyes will start accruing his $22 million salary Sunday, the day the MLB season opens. If the discipline becomes an unpaid suspension, he has the right to offset the time served against the penalty but must repay any salary he received during the paid suspension.

In the first final discipline under the new policy, New York Yankees closer Aroldis Chapman agreed to a 30-day suspension following an incident with his girlfriend in October. The agreement included a provision that it is not precedential for other discipline under the policy.

Rockies spokesman Warren Miller said the team had no immediate comment. The team is expected to wait until MLB decides on any discipline before addressing the issue.

The Toronto Blue Jays capped an up-and-down homestand in style Thursday night by relying on two of their big weapons — the team ace and the reigning league MVP.

Marcus Stroman allowed three hits over eight innings and slugger Josh Donaldson hit a three-run homer as Toronto defeated the New York Yankees 4-2 at Rogers Centre.

The victory brought the Blue Jays back to the .500 mark and helped ease some of the concern about their tepid start to the season. Toronto will take a 5-5 record into Boston on Friday for the opener of a seven-game road trip.

"I feel good leaving tonight," said Toronto manager John Gibbons. "We salvaged a pretty good homestand from the way it started against two pretty good teams. So we feel pretty good right now.

"We saw some signs of life in a couple more bats today and then Donaldson, that's why they call him the MVP I guess."

A few hitters have had some early troubles but the Toronto third baseman has picked up where he left off last year. In the fifth inning, he crushed a 1-0 pitch from Nathan Eovaldi over the centre-field wall for his fifth homer of the year.

It was the second straight win for the Blue Jays, who split the six-game homestand. Toronto opened the campaign by splitting a four-game series at Tampa Bay before dropping two of three at home to the Red Sox.

"A walk, a double and then a quick three-run homer," said Yankees manager Joe Girardi. "That's who they are. They hit the ball out of the ballpark and they're dangerous."

Donaldson, who has at least one hit in each game this season, predicted the bats will continue to progress once the team hits the road.

"I don't think that we've quite clicked offensively the way that we're going to probably in the next week or so," he said. "Hopefully tomorrow."

Stroman (2-0) rolled through the first three innings but had some trouble in the fourth.

A hit batsman and back-to-back singles loaded the bases. New York pushed a run across when Carlos Beltran beat out a potential double-play ball, allowing Alex Rodriguez to cross.

Mark Teixeira then scampered home on a wild pitch. Stroman was clearly frustrated but settled down after that, retiring the last 11 batters he faced and recording a total of 17 ground-ball outs.

"My mindset is always to be aggressive," he said. "I pitch in the zone and everyone knows that. I do everything in my power just to make quality pitches.

"I feel like when I'm making quality pitches, I'm going to be able to keep the ball on the ground."

Edwin Encarnacion doubled in the fourth inning for his first extra-base hit of the year. Troy Tulowitzki added an insurance run with a solo shot in the sixth for his second homer of the year.

Roberto Osuna pitched a 1-2-3 ninth inning for his fourth save in four opportunities. Toronto outhit the Yankees 8-3.

Eovaldi (0-1) lasted 6 2/3 innings for New York (4-4), allowing seven hits, two walks and four earned runs. He had eight strikeouts.

Announced attendance was 36,238 and the game took two hours 22 minutes to play.

Okay the Mets didn't play yesterday and they are rivals to the fucking Yankees so it is either them or a team in the AL East ...

Other teams don't matter to the fucking Yankees until playoff time.

Encarnacion's hot bat not enough in Jays' loss to Red Sox
    [IMG]

Rick Porcello pitched 6 1/3 solid innings and Travis Shaw hit a two-run double to lead the Boston Red Sox to a 5-3 victory over the Toronto Blue Jays Friday night.

What the fuck is so hard about beating a 500 team ????????????????

It's a rhetorical question Toronto is 500 as well ...

Jackie Robinson gets apology from Philadelphia 69 years later
MLB pioneer's poor treatment in city 'should never be forgotten'
The Associated Press Posted: Apr 15, 2016 8:47 PM ET Last Updated: Apr 15, 2016 8:47 PM ET

[IMG] People pass by a Philadelphia Mural Arts Program mural of Jackie Robinson in Philadelphia on Friday. On Jackie Robinson Day, Philadelphia is acknowledged its racist treatment of the baseball pioneer when he played in the city nearly 70 years ago.

As cities across the country honoured Jackie Robinson's pioneering baseball career, one also apologized for its racist treatment of Major League Baseball's first black player nearly 70 years ago.

When Robinson's Brooklyn Dodgers played the Philadelphia Phillies in 1947, he was told to "go back to the cotton fields" by the Phillies' manager, refused service at a local hotel and taunted by players with racial slurs when he came to bat. On Friday, Philadelphia's city council publicly acknowledged the incident as a dark chapter in the city's history.

"He faced tremendous racism in our city," Councilwoman Helen Gym said. "It was something he never forgot ... but neither should we."

    Broke MLB colour barrier
April 15 is recognized nationally as Jackie Robinson Day, and ballparks around the country are also celebrating the 69th anniversary of the day he broke the league's colour barrier in 1947. Robinson played for the Dodgers until 1956.

All MLB players, managers, coaches and umpires wore his No. 42 for games Friday. Baseball Commissioner Rob Manfred, at Yankee Stadium for the Seattle-New York game, said he was in his office earlier in the day and saw Colorado playing the Cubs on television, with everyone wearing the same number.

"It's a constant reminder that today's different," Manfred said.

Gym presented a resolution , passed by the council last month, before about 100 children, city leaders and Robinson fans — some wearing his No. 42 Dodgers jersey — gathered at the Philadelphia Stars Negro League Memorial Park. Among them was 79-year-old Carolyn Mitchell, who saw Robinson play as a girl.

Mitchell, who is black, said Friday's ceremony was "very meaningful" and that passing by the park gave her back fond memories of watching baseball growing up. The youngest of eight children and her parents' only daughter, Mitchell took to sports early and saw Robinson play in Philadelphia in the early 1950s.

"He was unbelievable," she recalled, smiling. "He could run like crazy. He used to love to steal bases."

    Mural in Robinson's honour
Robinson's skill for basestealing is depicted in a mural on Philadelphia's north end painted nearly a decade ago in his honour. Walking near the mural on Friday afternoon with her 10-year-old daughter, Nate', Tikeena Harris explained that blacks and whites didn't used to play sports together.

Tommy Keels, who lived nearby and passes the mural regularly, said Robinson was a groundbreaker who represented his race well.

"I lived through Jim Crow," said Keels, 60, who is from Miami. "I was raised in the South. I experienced a lot of things I know he did on a monumental scale."

In Los Angeles, where the Dodgers played their first game in 1958, Robinson's widow, Rachel, and daughter Sharon were participating in a pregame ceremony before a game against the San Francisco Giants at Chavez Ravine — where the club first retired Robinson's uniform number on June 4, 1972.

"What Jackie Robinson did, and what he's honoured for, he deserves every moment of it," former roommate and Brooklyn pitcher Don Newcombe told the AP on Friday while the Dodgers were taking batting practice. "And the world owes him whatever they can say about him and do about him that is good, because he was a great man.

"I was with him, I roomed with him, he was my good friend, my good buddy, and I loved him. I still love him today like he was still here," said Newcombe, who was the first black pitcher to win the Rookie of the Year award in 1949. "I remember Jackie sitting me and Roy Campanella down one day in Roy's apartment and he told us: 'I can't do it without you. I need you. And one day, we're going to change the letter I in bitter to an E for better.' And he became so right. God bless him."

Dodgers broadcaster Vin Scully, who was there for Robinson's career in Brooklyn, said Robinson's "self-control under some pressurized circumstances was remarkable."

    'Fire of competitiveness'
"We all knew that that fire of competitiveness was always on high, and he was not always welcomed. But he overcame all of that," Scully said. "That, to me was the most remarkable thing — how controlled he was with all the hell that was running around him. He took a lot of abuse, but kept his jaw tight. He had to be an unusual man, and he was."

Orlando Hudson, a 12-year veteran who played second base for the Dodgers in 2009, still has a couple of framed No. 42 jerseys hanging in his home, along with a photo of himself and Rachel Robinson — among his most treasured souvenirs from his playing career.

"Being an African-American male, playing the same position with the Dodgers that he did and wearing number 42 on this day, you can't get better than that," said Hudson, who now works for the Arizona Diamondbacks and has done some speaking engagements with Robinson's widow over the years.

Robinson died on October 24, 1972, at the age of 53, months after he became the first black player inducted into the Hall of Fame.

Blue Jays can't muster much against David Price, Red Sox in loss
Boston has won 4 of 5 against Toronto this season
The Toronto Blue Jays got their first look at who left them after last season's magical run to the playoffs.

David Price rebounded from a rough start in Boston's home opener by throwing seven solid innings to lead the Red Sox past the Blue Jays 4-2 on Saturday.

"We've been struggling offensively and then you run into Price today," Blue Jays manager John Gibbons said.

"We barreled some balls early and then he settled in and does what he does best — seven strong innings. So, yeah, he's not the guy you necessarily measure things against because he's just so good. We're due to break out."

The Blue Jays entered the day hitting just .194 on the road. They had only seven hits and struck out 12 times.

Price (2-0) gave up two runs and six hits, struck out nine and didn't allow a walk. He finished by striking out the side.

Signed to a $217 million US, seven-year deal during free agency, the left-hander had his best start for Boston.

In his Fenway Park debut with the Red Sox on Monday, he gave up five runs in five innings after allowing two in six at Cleveland on opening day.

The 30-year-old went 9-1 for the Blue Jays last year after he was acquired in a trade from Detroit, helping them earn their first playoff appearance since 1993.

Xander Bogaerts hit a three-run homer for Boston, which posted its third straight win. The Red Sox have defeated the defending AL East champs four times in five meetings.

Craig Kimbrel struck out the side in the ninth for his fourth save.

Marco Estrada (1-1) was charged with four runs and eight hits over six innings.

Estrada's outing began well until he was hit on the left leg by Jackie Bradley Jr.'s hard grounder leading off the third. After a pop out, four of the next five batters got hits and the Red Sox jumped ahead with four runs.

"Just one inning got away from me. I got hit and my calf kind of tightened up on me, couldn't really finish pitches," Estrada said.

"I felt like I was kind of running forward, trying to land or whatever, but other than that thought I threw the ball well. Calf is still pretty tight, but felt better, I guess, as the game went on."

Bogaerts pushed Boston ahead 3-1 with his first homer, a line drive into the Green Monster seats. Travis Shaw added an RBI single.

Jose Bautista's RBI double gave the Blue Jays a 1-0 lead in the first after Josh Donaldson tripled into the center-field triangle area. Edwin Encarnacion added a run-scoring double in the fourth.

Blue Jays hang on to earn series split in Boston

Russell Martin hit a two-run single against Craig Kimbrel to cap a four-run eighth inning, and the Toronto Blue Jays held on to beat the Red Sox 4-3 on Monday in Boston's annual Patriots' Day game.
