President Obama honours NBA champion Cavaliers

WASHINGTON — You learn a lot about people when they're down, President Barack Obama declared Thursday, and he wasn't talking about an election. Obama saluted the NBA's Cleveland Cavaliers for rallying from behind to defeat the Golden State Warriors and end a Cleveland pro sports title drought stretching back to 1964.

Obama honoured the Cavs on the South Lawn of the White House, squeezing in another sports champion before he leaves office. He opened with: "That's right. I said world champion and Cleveland in the same sentence."

The Cavs came back from a 3-1 deficit to win the championship against a Warriors team that set an NBA record for wins during the regular season.

"The first team in history to dig themselves out of a hole like that," Obama said. "The comeback was remarkable, and you learn about people when they're down."

That comment came shortly after Obama met with Donald Trump, who won the White House race to succeed him after a campaign in which the president declared the businessman unfit.

Obama singled out several players for praise, but particularly focused on LeBron James, who won the Most Valuable Player award during the championship series. Obama called James one of the greatest players of all time and said it's not just power and speed that make James great, but his unselfishness and work ethic. "You saw it in those last three games," the president said.

Obama said the Cavs also exemplified a growing generation of athletes who are using their platforms to speak out. He noted, as examples, that Kevin Love has worked to combat sexual assault and James has worked to reduce gun violence.

He said the team met earlier Thursday with Attorney General Loretta Lynch and senior adviser Valerie Jarrett to discuss steps the Cavs are taking to help build better relations between law enforcement and the Cleveland community.

"It is part of a league-wide effort to build stronger communities all across the country, including holding open conversations so we can begin to bridge divides," Obama said.

Clippers roll past Blazers, improve to NBA-best 7-1

LOS ANGELES — The Clippers are playing stingy defence and having fun doing it.

Blake Griffin had 22 points and 13 rebounds, Chris Paul added 19 points and Los Angeles rolled past the Portland Trail Blazers 111-80 on Wednesday night to improve to an NBA-best 7-1 with its fourth straight victory.

"When you play defence the way we have been, it's a lot of fun," Griffin said. "We enjoy getting stops and look forward to getting stops. Guys are just flying around, and even if someone makes a mistake, there's another guy to cover up for them. When you are playing basketball like that, it's a blast."

It was the second time the Clippers beat the Trail Blazers this season.

    This one was never close.

The Clippers stunned Portland from the opening tip, shooting 59 per cent in the first quarter. They built a 32-point lead in the first half, when Griffin had 17 points.

Los Angeles' bench opened the second quarter on a 14-2 run to go up 50-18 before extending the lead to 61-32 at halftime.

"We got our (rear ends) whupped," Blazers guard Damian Lillard said. "They had a lot of energy and they wanted it more than we did. They hurt us on the glass and we didn't take anything away from them."

Lillard, the NBA's second-leading scorer at 32.8 points per game, was held to eight. CJ McCollum, who was averaging 22.9 points, also scored eight for the Blazers.

They didn't have anyone in double figures until Shabazz Napier hit a 3-pointer with under 2 minutes left. He led the team with 11 points.

DeAndre Jordan had 16 points and nine rebounds and J.J. Redick added 10 points for the Clippers, who sat their starters for good at 3:54 of the third quarter while owning a 44-point lead.

It was the fourth straight game that the Clippers had at least an 18-point lead in the first half.

"We kept telling each other to not play the score and respect the game," Jordan said of keeping up the defensive pressure. "We wanted to make shots they took tough."

Before the starters left, they began the quarter with a 17-3 run that stretched the Clippers' lead to 78-35. Each of the five starters scored in the spurt. Paul and Luc Mbah a Moute each had a 3-pointer, and Jordan slammed down a two-handed, fast-break dunk off Griffin's alley-oop pass.

It was one of three signature dunks by Jordan in a period that ended with consecutive 3-pointers by reserves Marreese Speights and Austin Rivers, leaving the Clippers ahead 93-50.

Los Angeles held Portland to 35 per cent shooting. The Blazers shot just 6 of 30 on 3-pointers as their three-game winning streak was snapped.

"The Clippers beat us at both ends," coach Terry Stotts said. "They were good at the rim, good on the free throw line, good at passing, good on defence, good in transition."

    TIP-INS

Trail Blazers: They failed to score at least 100 points for the first time in nine games. ... They were held to 16 points in the first, a season low for a quarter. ... Portland was playing the second half of a back-to-back, having won at Phoenix by three points on Tuesday.

Clippers: With his fifth rebound in the first quarter, Griffin reached 4,000 in 417 career games, the second-fastest player since 1983-84 to reach 8,500 points, 4,000 rebounds and 1,500 assists. Chris Webber did so in 408 games. ... Jordan played his 600th career game, joining Randy Smith (715) and Eric Piatkowski (616) as the only players in franchise history to do so.

Nuggets file protest over last-second loss to Grizzlies

    Emmanuel Mudiay, The Canadian Press

DENVER — The Denver Nuggets would like a second chance at the final moment of a loss in Memphis.

The team filed a protest Thursday night with the NBA over a disputed call with 0.7 seconds remaining two days ago. The ball appeared to go off a Grizzlies player, but the ruling on the floor and video review awarded possession to Memphis. Marc Gasol hit the game-winning shot on a tip-in for a 108-107 win for the Grizzlies.

In a release, the Nuggets said the NBA released its final two-minute officiating report and acknowledged an incorrect possession call.

"Commissioner (Adam) Silver has done a fantastic job championing league transparency and accuracy for teams and fans alike with the addition of in-game video review and the NBA's instant replay centre," Nuggets president Josh Kroenke said in a statement. "However, in this case, a reviewable non-judgment call regarding possession was not sufficiently reviewed, and considering the time and score, we feel as if the incorrect ruling had a direct impact on the final outcome of the game."

Nuggets coach Michael Malone says the best-case scenario would be to "replay the last seven-tenths." If that were to happen, the Nuggets would be leading 107-106 and have possession of the ball.

The odds of that, though, are "slim and none," Malone said.

Denver doesn't play in Memphis again this season.

A do-over is not without precedent. Atlanta and Miami replayed the final 51.9 seconds of its disputed game during the 2007-08 season. The Hawks won 117-111 at home in overtime on Dec. 19, 2007. But it was protested by the Heat after the Atlanta stat crew mistakenly ruled Shaquille O'Neal had fouled out in the extra period.

The final minute was made up three months later with the Hawks holding on for a 114-111 OT win. O'Neal wasn't even around for the replayed contest, having been traded to Phoenix.

That marked the NBA's first replay since the 1982-83 season.

Damn, the Lakers and Nets went to war last night with a 125-118 win for the Lakers. The Cav's outlasted the Raptors 121-117 in another high scoring affair.

NBA bans Knicks’ Joakim Noah 20 games for drug violation
    [IMG]

Joakim Noah of the New York Knicks was suspended 20 games without pay for violating the league’s anti-drug policy.

He tested positive for a substance found in some over-the-counter supplements, the league said Saturday.

Noah has not played since Feb. 4 and likely was to miss the Knicks’ final 10 games this season because of a left knee injury. The NBA said Noah’s suspension will begin with the first regular-season or playoff game for which he is "eligible and physically able to play."

At minimum, that means the suspension will carry over into at least the first 10 games of next season and likely longer, since Noah is not currently able to play.

The players' union believes the 6-foot-11 player made an unintentional mistake.

"Joakim was completely forthcoming and co-operative throughout the investigation and we believe that this isolated occurrence was a regrettable mistake," the union statement said. "Joakim has offered his deepest apologies for this infraction, and neither he nor the NBPA will pursue an appeal."

The league cited Noah for Selective Androgen Receptor Modulator LGD-4033. The U.S. Anti-Doping Agency has said that the substance, known as SARMs, has "similar properties to anabolic agents, but ... the lack of steroid-related side effects."

The World Anti-Doping Agency has SARMs on its prohibited at-all-times list. USADA has issued warnings in the past that products containing the illegal compound are "being sold illegally as dietary supplements."

Noah is in the first year of a four-year, $72 million contract. He averaged 5.0 points and 8.7 rebounds in 46 games this season, and has been limited to 75 games over the last two seasons.

Knicks coach Jeff Hornacek told reporters in San Antonio on Saturday that he hopes Noah can be medically cleared by the end of this season so the suspension can begin.

The Knicks play in San Antonio on Saturday night, and began the day eight games back of the final playoff spot in the Eastern Conference.
