I am sort of confused at the moment. Since I've been young I've always wanted to be a teacher. But over the past couple of months (about 3 or 4 months) I've had this passion to serve my country. I've wanted to join the marines, but I'm unsure if it's the right step. Should I abandon my childhood dreams to do this? I know about the reserves but I don't want to do that. I've been researching it and am really contemplating it. please, anybody who has served (marines or non), or thought about serving, any feedback? Advice from anyone would be helpful.

 

well, I've got a friend who joined when he graduated HS and it's pretty hardcore. Really, this is up to you because it is a huge step. Do whatever feels right to you in your heart.

 

Sometimes when I am in a delema (can't spell..) I make a list of the pros and cons of each to help me deicde.
But really, it's all up to what you should feel you should do.

 

The Marines is a HUGE jump I have had several family members that have had very different experiences. (stories in which I do not want to tell) You do come out a changed person, if you make it through. I would imagine you would need to be in some form of physical shape to be able to handle the rigerous operations they do. (during boot camp and actual duty)Not to mention the mental toughness to handle a drill instructor (I think it would be a woman for you) yelling in your face.

Weighing the pros and cons is a huge help in deciding what to do. I have tremendous respect for all of our troops. Although teaching is a great way to give back to hundreds of kids through out your career. Good luck in your decsion, either way both are excellent choices.

Thanks for the feedback. I called one of my male friends earlier who is without a doubt joining the marines and expressed my interested and he reccommended that I train with him for the next couple of weeks after I get back from my vacation next week. He said if I could keep up with him then it's possible that I am cut out for it. He comes from a long line of marines so his dad has trained him. So I'm going to hang out with him and see if I'm cut out for it.

 

That will be an excellent test. Even better from a guy whos family has been in the military, they know what to expect.

 

well, although im against the political aspects of this country...i have great respect for our troops...espicialy the marines because their the first to fight ...i say that you should seriously consider joining i dont remember if you said you want to go to college to be a teacher (i have bad memory) but you could get money for college...and plus the kids would have lots of respect for you...and youd have no trouble handle the kids after the things you'll see

 

Can't you do both? Become a teacher after the Marines? Or is that just certain armed forces that you can do that?

 

You may wanna think about the Air-Force. They aren't in the real fighting, they're always well behind lines, so it's alot safer. It's the only department where it's really the officers who fight. And they'd fully pay for you to go to college, and get a degree in almost anything under the sun. Although lately, as always, they're always looking for engineers to help with the construction of bases.

I've never been in the Marines, but from all I've seen, it's really well glorified, but mainly what you do is march around the desert in full uniform, trying to find insurgents, and trying to prevent a further escalation in the civil war.

I'm not sure about where you wanted to teach high school, but from my own experiences, they always pay the new teachers well under minimum wage, if you count the hours you have to work after school to grade, correct, make tests etc. They ussually give all the new teachers the toughest classes. And it's a really hard job. God knows though that the States could really use alot more, well qualified teachers.

Just my thoughts. You should ultimately do what you think is right.

Also, I thought I heard somewhere that to get more recruits they toned down the drill instructors.

 

I've thought very seriously about joining the military, as I know it would be an advancement in my desired career in law enforcement. But frankly the main thing holding me back is that I don't want to go serve in Iraq due to an opposition to the war.

If you have any reservations about going to Iraq or Afghanistan, DO NOT join the military, because you can count on being shipped out to the front lines.

If you don't, then by all means, there are few more honorable professions than to serve the country like that.

 

my middle son just graduated from Parris Island in January of this year. And my oldest son is a staff sergeant in the US Army.
Both boys have said that boot camp is the worst part of the military experience. The drill instructors,while they cant physically hit you, can make your life miserable.
Both boys are qualified for the GI Bill which pays for the college. The Marine is actually signed up and will be Attending(taking classes online) for the fall semester.
Both enlisted of their own free will. My oldest has been in the army for 7 years and plans on making a career of it. My Marine is currently in the reserves, but he has talked about going active as well.
The comment regarding the war is accurate. This is a reality you may have to face if you enlist. If not Iraq or Afghanistan then possibly somewhere else. But it is possible to have both careers if this is something that you really want to do. Either way good luck with which ever you choose.

Thanks for everyone's feedback. Although I'm still pulled both ways I'm going to try training with my friend, hopefully then I'll get a better idea of what the service entails. I'll let you all know how the training session goes with him and his dad. I'm "shipped off" to his house in two weeks. (Next week I'm on vacation)
