I definitely have different goals for the United States than you do. Opinion polls indicate that public opinion is moving in my direction on important issues. A growing percentage of Americans, especially younger Americans, prefer socialism to capitalism.

Addendum: I would end affirmative action in government employment. I would reduce funding for colleges and universities that practiced affirmative action in admissions.

I would not begin a dragnet to locate illegal immigrants. When they were identified I would deport them. I would end the practice of giving citizenship to the the children of illegal immigrants born in the United States.

I would institute a harsher criminal justice system. The emphasis would be on plenty of executions, and a much larger number of long prison sentences at hard labor, enforced by the whip.

 

The Democrat Party that I really like is the one that existed from the inauguration of Franklin Roosevelt in 1933 to the assassination of John Kennedy in 1963 - thirty years in all.

Since 1963 the Democrat Party has moved to the left on social issues - especially regarding race, crime, and punishment - in ways that I dislike.

Unfortunately, the Republican Party has been moving to the right on economic issues in ways that I dislike more.

In 1954 President Eisenhower wrote this in a letter to his brother:

"Should any political party attempt to abolish social security, unemployment insurance, and eliminate labor laws and farm programs, you would not hear of that party again in our political history. There is a tiny splinter group, of course, that believes you can do these things. Among them are H. L. Hunt (you possibly know his background), a few other Texas oil millionaires, and an occasional politician or business man from other areas.4 Their number is negligible and they are stupid."

A Republican politician who publicly made a statement like that now would have trouble winning a Republican primary.

Much of my social conservatism consists of dislike for changes in individual values and behavior. For example, in MAY 26, 2015 Gallup wrote:

"Americans are more likely now than in the early 2000s to find a variety of behaviors morally acceptable, including gay and lesbian relations, having a baby outside of marriage and sex between an unmarried man and woman. Moral acceptability of many of these issues is now at a record-high level."

There is plenty of evidence that children raised to adulthood by both biological parents living together in matrimony tend to do better in life than children raised in other situations. Nevertheless, in a country like the United States there is little the government can do to influence sexual behavior, so I do not consider this to be a political issue.

I have always viewed the religious right with interest and a degree of sympathy. Nevertheless, its efforts to use political activism to restore the moral ethos of the 1950's has obviously failed. The only thing the religious right has achieved has been to increase the power of the Republican Party to make the rich richer.

 

Dog, it doesn't matter if you are a democrat who votes a straight ticket or a republican that votes a straight ticket. They both are wrong. Both are puppets of their chosen party.

I have voted party line for 20 years, not that I like the GOP, but because there is not one thing that I find common ground on from the democrats over the past 20 years.

 

I try to look at the person. If I think they are half way honest, and that is saying a lot for a politician, and I think they can do the job better than the others I vote for them.
I don't care which party they may be.

 

That's right, younger Americans, prefer socialism to capitalism, however, I can assure you, they will have a come to Jesus moment and change their minds when they realize that individualism is far more beneficial than collectivism.

 

About the time they have to get a real job and pay their own bills they will change.

 

I dont trust any politician, but we have to have them, therefore, I PREFER to have more GOP politicians than the weasely leftists that run on pure emotional rhetoric.

Lately the democrats have come unglued.
Looks like it will be a long time before they can even be considered a party.
More like a mob right now.

There is very little point to this thread. A liberal President will get little or nothing done with this Congress.
